- Looking for a fun project in the shop that doesn't take long and you can carry it around in your pocket where ever you go? Here's one for you, a custom veneered smart phone case.
One of the benefits of being a woodworker is that we can frequently customize everyday items. Whether it's building them from raw materials or adding a little flair to an existing item, it's relatively easy to find a way to spruce them up a bit.
In today's episode I'll show you a little fun I've been having when I combine some inexpensive pre-manufactured plastic smart phone cases I picked up at Amazon.com with some veneers I bought at Woodcraft.com.
The process is simple, it can be relatively quick and more importantly it's a great way to have fun in the shop and maybe even impress your friends and family (unless they're like mine who just roll their eyes and walk away...with the item in hand.)

Great idea, Matt! A few tips on the CA glue: go to the local hobby shop that sells plastic model kit supplies and ask for liquid mask. It's a rubbery paint that, when it dries, will protect the areas you don't want the glue on. When you're done it just peels off. Also, remember that CA off gasses for a while (a few days) which will cause crazing (the white or crystally haze) on the plastic. Leave it protected until the CA is finished off gassing and you are finished sanding. If you do get some scratches in the plastic, just use some ultra fine grit wet/dry paper (2000/3000 grit) with a little windex and just use a good quality spray acrylic clear to finish the whole product. It will cover the sanded plastic and it'll look like new.
Great beginner project. Thanks!
Sweet!!! Thank you, this is great to know. I'll add it to my shopping list and give it a try.
Awesome. Perhaps a nail file/emory board for sanding/shaping the edges.
Sounds like something that could work. Worth a try that's for sure.
Hi Matt, pretty cool idea. Have you seen the Spigen Slim Armor cases for the iPhone, where you can remove the plastic back cover from the rubber back? Would be good if you can make a replacement wood piece for the plastic. It's probably very difficult as the corners are pretty thin. Would love to know if you can do it though or have any ideas on how to approach it.
Hmmm...interesting.
Great show! If you think about it, this is probably one of the best newbie projects. You need a pack of veneer, some sand paper, a scalpel and some glue. Minimal investment, great reward, we all live on our phones.
I was just telling my daughter she could make these and sell them for that very reason.
Great project Matt! This might be a stupid idea (they are my specialty!), but I wonder if a small forstner bit in a drill press might work for the camera hole?
That idea could totally work, especially if someone was using thicker veneers. Thanks!
Great idea. I'll be trying to make a few as well. I wonder how well blue painters tape around the edge would work to protect from the glue and sanding scratches.
I have thought about using it, at the most a little squeeze out will make it stick, but all in all it's not that bad.
thats it? what mickey mouse job!!!
OMG, I hope my wife doesn't see this video. She'll have me making her a new cover every week, haha. Great idea and video Matt!
My daughter has already claimed these, which is okay considering my wife and I have a 5. Of course, now my wife wants some of her own though LOL!
Nice Job.
+Abdumalik Yusupov Thanks!
I think if you put some type of heavy tape around the case you could prevent most of the scuffing that occurred and simply remove after you sand the veneer
Then go over the case with a very high grit sand paper
wonderful idea, easy to do at home
Awesome! Love the idea!
Great idea!!!!
loving it
Nice
que lindo ♥♥
Can I make and sell these
absolutely! After having made a few and then hearing from others, I'd stick to the thinner veneers available versus a thicker shop-made. Have fun and good luck!
Thanks
