It's videos like this that make me love working with wood so much. I'm just a beginner, and just getting my tools collected, but man it's going to be so satisfying with results like these. The music is just an added bonus. Subscribed. Genuinely love this.
Reminds me the technique used to make little barrel-shaped penholder from wooden clothespin when I was in firste grade... right in the feelings... thank you!
I expected you to make 2 mugs in 1 and to then cut the piece in half, like you do then you make a box with a lid. Thanks for making this entertaining video. Personally, I think that the people complaining about the price of these mugs, they have no clue how much time goes in making a product. Haters will always be haters. Keep up the good work and share more projects.
I've got one of these mugs, and they're absolutely worth the price. Excellent craftsmanship and it's easily become my favourite mug. I've actually been considering getting another one. One of the really expensive ones made from bog oak. :D
Svaka Vam cast.
+Deric Kettel Just cut the cloth-backed sandpaper into strips, drill a hole on one end and line them up on a screw with a washer and nut. Simple and effective;)
Very interesting! I recently received a set similar to these that my German born great-great grand father made. They are beautiful, he was a pattern maker and as I understand very talented and helped design some intricate devices. Anyway, the banding he used appears to be strap strap and it is broken and soldered in places, I going to guess from the wood expanding from humidity or moisture, as the finish is very thick. I see that you use a seamless steel tubing. Great workmanship and Thank you for posting this video!
That is probably true. Wood need to be stabilized in order not to absorb moisture or to "breath". That is why we have special coating that prevents that. Thank you for commenting! :)
I would love to have one my self but also have the inside and outside of the mug rounded out same as the big barrels are. This Mug is perfect for me.. I drink a lot of tea, and other sorts.
Interesting that when you cut the slats for the mug, you don't miter cut each side so that each slat lays flush with the next. Are you just not showing that step, or do they kind of press together when you assemble it? (It's possible that I just missed that!)
+Caleb Faulkner Both size have the same angle. We just didnt put that in video, because its 2 scenes of the same part of production. Video is already longer then it should be, so we cut out all unnecessary parts
are you guys ever going to put these back up on your etsy? they look amazing!!! better than - it goes without saying but i still gotta - the stuff i've seen on other online shops
I was just listening to the beautiful music on this video and received a call telling me that my Cousin committed suicide this morning. In fact I had just posted below asking where I could find this music when I found out about Bill. I'm sad. Such is life sometimes. I will remember him fondly. Thanks you for the music.
I do medieval armor too, I made a chainmaille vest by hand out of 7 ga galvanized wire. unfortunately I broke 2 pairs of pliers and my main bolt cutters. very cool mugs btw.
Well I hope you guys also made some push sticks after this, because you got a high stakes finger lottery going on in the video. None the less a great looking mug.
Wow, really good your work. I'm inspired to use this technique, just to have fun and make something different, not a mug haha. Thank you for sharing with us.
first ones were made by hand, traditional way (you can find those in pictures on our facebook page, year 2012,13), and we can make then without any power tools whatsoever. But this is our side project, we are making much more complicated things, and we simply over-engineered this mug, and making process. We now even have our own one of a kind polymer coating on them, food approved, with all sanitary permits for the product. There are 4 layers of it on mugs, it is really tough, and basically beverages dont have any contact with wood or glue.
Traditional barrels rely on swelling even then its normally topped off with with wax/or older techniques used oils derived from fats cups would never swell due to finish coat no standing liquid.. And very specific treating usage this small of scale it could work especially with polymer and stuff but just seeing it being hard to sand finish/band.
What's the purpose of the non-functional rivets in the bands? Just to make it look badass so the bikers will want one? Nice mugs but I would prefer maple with a wooden handle attached to the bands. (with functional rivets)
I have never seen a sanding system like you used to sand the interior of the mug. Is that something you designed or can it be purchased commercially? I would like to get info on how to get one.
+Brad Sumner Take a sanding paper with cloth baking (not paper) and cut into strips. Drill a hole at one end of the strips and put a screw through all of them. Arrange them randomly and tighten the nut. Take a longer screw so you can insert it into drill head. That's it. You can experiment with different lengths, thickness and grit ;)

really cool. Curious about something though. Why don't you heat the metal to expand it? Wouldn't that give the mug more character and better retention?

For some reason that last little segment at the end there makes me want to see a medieval sitcom. "DOTH THOU JEST?!"
Deus Vult my friend, Deus vult
Surely thou joust!
Ah a simpler time... Getting drunk and decapitating witches. Pepperidge Farms remembers.
thats hilarious
😂😂😂😂 dead.
If this was my job with this music playing all the time I wouldn't want to go home
Exactly what I was thinking man.
I'll stick with my metal bud
go for it
Truly a form of art. I'm a Realtor and these would be awesome gifts to buyers who love their beer--very unique!
You can contact us if you have any ideas :)
Just ordered 8 of these. By far the best tankards Ive ever seen.
Not just a mug but a piece of art. Beautiful work.
Reminds me the technique used to make little barrel-shaped penholder from wooden clothespin when I was in firste grade... right in the feelings... thank you!
loving the combination of wood and metal work in making of beer mug

I have to say those woods that's being cut is oddly satisfying to look at.

Those sanding strips that went inside was the best part! I never knew anything like that even existed! Nice work!

I had the idea of making a few of these as gifts for family sometime in the future, along with home-brewed booze, of course. Great video!
I would love to have one my self but also have the inside and outside of the mug rounded out same as the big barrels are. This Mug is perfect for me.. I drink a lot of tea, and other sorts.

great video man lovin it.
Is it required to go to valhalla?
You guys are AWESOME.. 👏
So what types of wood can be used for making mugs?
Verry good!
Beautiful. ...
Have you made an attempt to do this using traditional barrel making techniques (no glue, just pressure) or is it just too difficult on this scale?

Good, Cold Beer tastes good in anything : )

It would also melt the 1st layer of food safe coating that we are using :)
