This is why using the extra switch you can have the unit it patch mode and you can switch presets as well without loosing access to turning on the effects mentioned. I think the easiest way to think of this as in preset mode it is very similar to a Boss, Gt, where you program presets and then switch them, but in patch mode you have a pedal board in front of you, you can then (by pressing and holding) change pedal board for a different song. I think this is very versitle
Hi Al, Thanks for your comment, I am not near my Nova system at the moment, but as soon as I am I will check for you. I suggest checking out the TC Limited Presets which are available online at the TC site and I am sure I based mine on one of Pete Thorns setting.
thanx for quick response lightb4sound i think im getting it. i see the advantage of having it in patch mode. but i could still have it in preset and use it like a boss. and having the extra switch you can have the best of both worlds. cheers
It may not have a wa function but with the use of the pedal and parameters you can create the wa. I don’t know that is done but that’s how you get the wa from the Nova.
Not strictly true, you can create a sweepable filter, but the EQ section does not have a band pass filter which is the key component of a wah pedal. The EQ is parametric without high and low pass filters so you could only really achieve a sweeping boost feature with variable Q to your taste.
That is a good question!! I will need to check, but it is a dotted 8th delay, this is the important thing to set, with regards the tempo this depends on the speed of the song. You can set that with the tap tempo.
lol - I think you mean intonation! Actually, tuning by harmonics is the most accurate method, & if you use 5th/7th position harmonics you can 'balance' tunings to allow for your intonation being slightly out. I've got an opportunity to buy a Nova System plus G-Switch for £259 from a big store name inc free delivery, full 12 mth warranty & option to return for a refund in 7 days if I don't want to keep it - seems a pretty good deal! Your vid was the prompt so thank you again. Cheers Rich
I've post this elsewhere but thought I mention it here too. The problem with this unit is the inability to switch Banks on the fly for the presets. You need to hold and wait, then tap the up button when prompted. It's not practical in a Live situation. And also, switching between presets is not real time - there is that lag which is annoying. Regardless, this unit does have amazing sounds and I'm quite satisfied with it. If only TC would improve on these very obvious and annoying issues.
I understand the confusion. The issue is because the NS has two ways of switching 'patches'. The first way is patch mode, here you have access to all the effects in a patch and can switch them on and off, but to switch preset you have to hold one of the switches down and wait for it to say 'ready' before the preset changes. The other way enables you to switch preset straight away, but you lose access to switch on rev/comp/od.
Good video Neil. I'm about a week in with my Nova System, bit of a steep learning curve (when you don't read a manual!) mine also came with a homemade G-switch, as soon I got that plugged in it all started to make a bit more sense! I've been after one for a while and got the chance to grab mine at a guitar show for £200! It's got it's limitations, but for me the positives kick the negatives away. the quality of the effects and drive are outstanding. I've got a Flashback x4 so I was planning on Midi'ing it up to the Nova... but really impressed with the delay on this! hmm...
Thank you very much, glad that you found it useful. The Nova does have a bit of a learning curve, the manual is well written though and very accessible. That will be a fantastic set up, be interested to hear how you get on with that, I guess that you'll have 4 delays then, which could make some interesting combos!
Sorry to hear that things didn't work out. I mentioned in the video that TC gear has a certain sound, usually clean and pristine and that isn't for some people I know. I agreed it is a little frustrating that there is no wah, perhaps in V2. I'm not sure what you mean by switch-3? I am also a bit surprised about the distortions. I would say (and TC say) they aren't metal, but I get a lovely Tube Screamer tube crunch for the OD setting. But it highlights why trying stuff out is important
Neil Spencer Bruce I have an American Standard Stratocaster, Im uploading a video of my gear and the sound that i have with my Nova System into a Blackstar Ht40. I would love to know the particular range of Freq to fly away with my Stratocaster. Thank you!
If they come out with a new version that is easier to work with I might go for another one. But it seemed nightmarish to work with & I really didn't care for the drive. I had the extra switch & everything. Sadly I didn't find these videos until I got rid of it. Loved the delay & reverb. I ended up & got the HOF & Flashback as stand alones which are great too.
greatvanzinni The HOF and Flashback are fantastic, especially with some of the available tone prints. I also have both of them and I really do think they are fantastic! I tend to agree somewhat about how the Nova isn't the easiest unit to program, nothing beats hands on controls which you can just turn and understand. We shall see what comes out one day hopefully!
Hi dbenc. After using it for over a year now, I am even more in love with it, it has been firmly routed on my pedalboard and I doubt that it is going to come off. I would still love a filter effect and a decent tuner (so I have to add those in), but the Nova is staying on my board until Nova System II comes out (fingers crossed!). I think you'll love it, and if you have any questions, just ask!
This unit is outstanding. As rule I can't use multi fx units GT 100 mustang floor tried loads and they all sound GarageBand on any overdrive. Cleans and delay not so bad but so digital but this thing is different it sounds awesome I was really surprised the drive sounds are great and the analog drive on it really makes the difference. All the FX are amazing especially the delays and octive pedal. It has so many features as well it's very clever and looks great and it's well built. Get one ;)
Hi Neil,I just got the nova system to put in front of my fender Princeton reverb amp. Is there a video out that is a simple get acquainted Basic start from the beginning. Nice and slow for the non-computer type like me.
Hi Jack, congratulations on your Nova system. You can find a playlist of Nova videos on my channel, but this is probably a good place to start when connecting to your amp th-cam.com/video/Pzs05feJOpo/w-d-xo.html Give me a shout, let me know how you get on. all the best, SB
Thanks alot for the reply. I just downloaded the presets onto my board yesterday after updating the firmware. both of which I think were painless processes haha! I'll check out the pete thorn ones.
Thanks Mark,If set up is Amp loop - Nova Drive - Nova system - Amp return? and then only use the ND for a boost? Then this would work fine. Of course there is a boost in the Nova system (clean boost) and if you are driving a tube amp this might work really well, additionally if it is a boost for solos (with the added delay) then you can also program in some mid frequency boost via the EQ and have all that set to a preset. That make a really nice solution.
Thank you or pointing out the point about the 4 cable system. I'm amazed that they didn't include that. I do understand the reasoning, but it's really a deal breaker for me. I can't afford a G-system, so I might as well buy a line 6 or digitek unit instead. It's really a shame because they don't sound nearly as good. But at least they won't bar me from using my amp to it's full potential. I think I'll just wait it out for now.
Hi Neil can you show the unit in the loop making a preset that changes amp channels I.E. clean ,crunch, lead in preset mode please. I just bought a JP2C Mesa and want to use the amp channels for tone and the nova system for switching channels and effects love your channel
Hi there, thanks for watching and your kind words, glad you like the channel. Unfortunately I don't have the Nova at the moment so can't make a video, but you just need to take the midi out from the Nova to the Midi in of the JP2C and then for each Nova preset set a different program change value, then match this on the Amp (look at page 27 in the amp manual on how to set it depending on which channel you want) and then you are good to go. Hope that helps, all the best, Neil
Hi Prognut777, unfortunately you can only either use the G-switch (or equivalent) or and expression, not both at the same time. If you used a midi footswitch you could achieve this. Thanks!
Hi Bram, If you are only using the High Gain channel on your amp, I would suggest using it in the loop (but you will loose the OD feature), the boost is clean, but it will drive your power amp tubes harder so you will get some nice distortion as a result, which will probably give extra sustain too. Or you could use the compressor for both the boost and the sustain. I actually use mine in front of a very clean amp, and use pedals for the gain. I would suggest experimenting! Good luck!
Hi there, it is the G Switch www.brightonion.co.uk/fs3-footswitch/ I am sure you can find a schematic online as I believe it is qiute a simple pedal. All the best, Neil
I got rid of mine ! It was too unreliable and froze up none stop ! A few times live a had to reboot it during the show .... A real dissaster !! Hd500x no problems 👍
Emil Bendixen interesting, touch wood I have gigged my extensively for the last 3 years and only had one issue which was my fault, never had it freeze at all. I must be lucky!
I’ve just got one of these and can’t use the drive pedal because as soon as i switch it on all i get is heavy feedback! My set up is a Les Paul with the Nova and a marshal valve amp.. 10 ft cables between the Nova and amp with no power supply plugs with in 6 ft.. Guitar is plugged into drive on the Nova and the amp plugged into the left output … Can you advise please ? Thanks
Press MENU button and select “Utility” menu by using Edit D knob and then press MENU button again. Next, scroll to “Clear System” parameter and press MENU button to enter. Finally, when the display appears “Are You Sure?”, press MENU button to start initialization of the program. The Factory Reset procedure is complete.
3playguitar It is a g-switch equivalent, made by James at brightonion.co.uk . It was much cheaper and more robust than the g-switch. It runs from a standard jack connection. There is no cut when you change sound using this method. Hope that helps!
Hi there Chris, thanks for the message. Just to clarify, the 'analogue' part of the nova system is only related to the Drive circuitry, the rest of the unit is digital, but the distortion is the only analogue part. I can't hear this delay (I've gigged with the pedal for the last 2 1/2 years) you mention. To clarify, the 'boost' only adjusts the preset level to 0db, it is not like an analogue boost pedal. Hope that helps
Thank Phill. You could technically do that, but I don't think it would sound to great as it would be the same as plugging as series of FX pedals straight into the poweramp. With no preamp as such, your levels would be off too probably too close to line-level.
Hi there and thanks for watching. Tough question! The HX effects probably has an easier interface to work with and more effects overall, but personally I would probably still go for the Nova as I personally prefer the sound of TC effects (and it has an analogue drive). The HX effects is pretty awesome though, I wish TC would update the Nova for 2019!! all the best, Neil
Neil Spencer Bruce thanks Neil ... i am an electric violin player... i did notice that the nova system has a really nice delay and reverb for my violin ... i did order the hx effects so curious how that will sound ? But one of them i might resell... you did sell your nova system right ? Thanks for your feedback Neil !
Wow very cool! Love electric violin! Don't get me wrong I think you will be happy with the HX Effects but personally just the delay and reverb from TC is something I perfer. I did sell the Nova system only because I was downsizing, part of regrets it now! All the best, Neil
@@NeilSpencerBruce hi Neil thanks for the quick and interesting answer ! and thanks for the compliment on electric violin... by the way your videos on the nova system are great.. !! they are unique... well, i was planning to sell the nova system... i even am using / testing the irig stomp with ipad with its Amplitude effects app, which is cool and good to use as well... so together with the hx effects, i have enought now, and i thought eliminating 1 or 2 of these 3 options... but it seems it will be a dificult job though ... ;-) i can imagine you regret partially having sold the Nova system, cause you talk about it with a lot of love ;-) Probably you will buy it again in the nearby future ! thanks Neil ...
The TCE Switch-3 is the new name for their 3-button 'G-Switch'. It's not the pristineness - quite the reverse. It was a lack of definition/fullness. Distortions are very personal of course, but I like Marshall crunch (think JCM800, JCM2000, & JCM900 tones) and Mesa Boogie thick tones. Tube screamer tones were OK but lacked 'bite'. I could get closer raising input levels but then I got feedback issues. Not a bad unit in any way just not 4 me- perhaps I've just been spoiled by the Vox TLLE.
Excellent vid - I'm thinking of buying one with G-switch, so your vid was really helpful. I have tried one albeit briefly, & sounded great, but your vid re functionality is really enlightening. One comment re the tuner - yes it struggles in 'open' string if you drop-D or use a 7-string. However, it seemed to work perfectly with the 12th string harmonic - just wondered if you tried it that way? Re on-board EQ, can that help give a typical mid-heavy but crisp Marshall Crunch with the drive?
Interesting idea Ryan, but I am not sure it would work, also because you have to set the Nova for either Expression OR G-switch, so you couldn't have both.
Hi Ricardo, I purchased mine from a company called brightonion pedals (youtube won't allow me to type the url here) there are based in the UK and it is a fantastic switch at a good price. Hope that helps.
Hi Neil, Thanks for the excellent review. Could you provide me with a photo of the inside of the selfmade G-switch please? I would like to make one myself and would like to know how the wires run and what diodes etc are in there. Thanks Rene
Hi Voxman. I have tried that harmonic method, but I find this a bit of a pain and can also cause one or two other issues, as it highlights innotation problems with a guitar (which is a good thing!), but in particular I find that it causes the G string to be out, imho. The onboard EQ is useful in tone shaping, I think you can get a good crunch out of it for sure in the distortion mode, although I still love the Suhr Riot for that :)
Clear review from a practical viewpoint, thanks for that! One could also add another drive/disto pedal in the fx-loop to give a clean boost and a drive on top of the preamp sound. Now you can use the Nova System in the fx-loop and u kinda solve the 'driveproblem' (the MXR CAE Dual Boost is great for that purpose, my situation right now with stompboxes delay/chorus in the fx-loop). Just for curiosity: did you every try to use the drive input in the fx-loop of your amp? Does it sound stupid or does the NS changes the way it responds and the output signal heavily? Just for the sake of experiment? Cheers!
Thanks for that kind comment! You could certainly try that, although I have tried the drive input and it there was obvious impedence different betwen the line and drive level input. You could try adjsuting the output level of the unit as a whole, but it would be tricky to find the sweet spot. Of course you could then use the drive as a boost in someway. I don't see why not. It also depends on the level of your loop in the amp.
It is utterly unbelievable compared to (what? ;-) ) all those different stompboxes. Though I love some uniqueness, the time-based effects are unbeatable. My Mesa gives a phat rhythm sound and I can boost it with the NS. Within a day I can sell 7 other pedals of my former pedalboard. I combine it with a MXR CAE Wah, a Line6 FM4 and a EHX Q tron (wired with a Lehle D Loop). I have no noise and it is a revelation.. and before that a black hole. hahaha. :D
The unit is very very quiet, there is no hiss or hum (perhaps if you set the output level too high, but you would know about this when you hear it), the only noise would be from the Amp loop, but you can set a noise gate with the unit
pastorkev777 It really is a great unit, of course there are some limitations that you will see people mention, but for a solid multi effects which sounds great, has fantastic delay, reverbs and modulations, with lots of options, you can't really go wrong I don't think. If only they would release a version which enabled Tone prints, I would be the happiest person alive!
Hi Jordan, it isn't a looper pedal it is a G-switch that James at Bright Onion made for me. If you email him he will be able to help you. The cable is a stereo jack cable, not mono!
Hi there! Good question...yes and no! I am very happy with what I have now, but the Nova was one hell of a unit so I do miss elements of it!! I am still (after all these years!) Hoping that TC bring out a version 2!!
I did mean intonation, damn that predictive text! I agree that it is accurate, but I find that root postion chords are then slightly out of tune. That is a great deal on the Nova , let me know how you get on or if you have any questions. Good luck with it!!
Hey guys. Quick question. I was looking into buying a Nova system and the pricing varies a lot from different music stores to online prices to ebay. Are there different versions of the Nova system? Did a new version or model come out and replace the original? Or is there just one version? I've been trying to find out but cant seem to get the answer. Thanks
Hi there. There actually two different versions, there is the 'normal' version (in Black) and the Limited Edition Red version. This has a series of limited edition presets and is red! Otherwise no other real difference, the ltd edition presets are now available to the normal owners, so there is little reason to get the red one (unless you like red!). The pricing should be pretty consistent though.
Neil Spencer Bruce Thanks for the info Neil! Much appreciated. I just ordered "normal black" one. It should be here in a few days. Ok so the ltd edition presets are available for me to purchase? or download?
just got the nova system and it keeps freezing up like every 10 min ,so i have to unplug and restart it again. Obviously i can't work with that have you heard of this before or am i doing something wrong
Hi Emil, that sounds very strange behaviour. I haven't heard of anything like this before at all. I don't think you are doing anything wrong, it does sound like a fault unfortunately. I would drop TC an email and ask for their advice, as it is also new perhaps you can return it to the shop. I does sound like a fault to me. Good luck fixing it!
pedal is that you use the side ... is the g-switch? fabricaion or home ... could you tell me what type of connector is the switch? and if there is a cut when you change preset sound .... Great video ....
chodil770 You can yes, this is how I use it sometimes, directly into the front of the amp, but obviously the amp is set to clean. The time based effects don't sound so good into a distorted amp, but if you have an nice clean amp then will be fine!
hey man, Just got a nova. Having trouble using the flanger. yours sounds awesome. could you possibly tell me your settings so I can have a good starting sound. I use flangers a lot. I'd be very much appreciating.
Well someone can get a simpler an cheaper Nova Drive to drive the front of the amp while having the Nova System on the Effects loop and a simple midi controller like Tech21 Midi Mouse and just connect the 2 units and solve all of the problems with patches etc as well.
That is a great idea, I forgot that the Nova Drive is midi compatible. You would still have the compressor in the loop, but it really is a very tidy solution! Nice one!!
How decent is the speaker simulation? I'm moving to another country and sadly I'm leaving my Peavey classic 30 and bandit transtube behind. My temporary rig would be the nova system coupled with headphones or studio monitors, so no amp for me. I tried some of the line 6 pods because of the amp modeling that would allow me to play with an "amp", but I hated the digital sound and crappy response and dynamics. Do you think that the Nova would work for this purpose using the speaker simulation? I don't wanna sacrifice the quality effects and warmth of the nova just to use a modeled amp and cliche presets on a line 6. Thanks a lot! I came here because of your article.
To be honest, the Speaker simulation is basically an EQ setting in the EQ block, so isn't going to set the world on fire. I would suggest that something like the very cheap Joyo American Drive Pedal (a fender deluxe amp model) in a box would be a great thing to plug the Nova into, it is small and sounds great and can be picked up very cheap $30 new or even less second hand.
Thanks! I actually have some spare pedals like the boss od3 overdrive and the boss compressor. Do you think I could use the od3 overdrive to fatten up the signal? I would leave it on all the time with subtle gain, and maybe i would add a digitech digidelay since it has a reverse setting which the nova doesn't include.
I am not sure that they would work as intended, especially as you would be doubling up with the Nova OD and Compressor. You would need something which is 'amp like with speaker simulation', I think the range of Joyo's are probably the best and cheapest option, others would set you back a lot more money.
So I have a voxtone lab the st .... Now can you control the volume on all the settings? I ask because its hard to get a great sound with multi effect boards like this but it sounds great pretty shocked
HI Stephen, I am not sure I fully understand the question. You have many options for controlling volume on the Nova system, at patch and presest level, you can also attach an external volume controller to adjust this, or set the boost level.
Neil Spencer Bruce sorry lol .... i Guess what i was saying is sometimes on multi effects there hard too control the full volume and dial in.... Am debating on getting this or pedal's
Is that box from Bright Onion, a 3 Looper? Looked on their site, couldn't find one similar to yours. Also, how do you have it hooked up? What kind of cable is that? Thanks.
lightb4sound you said."The other way enables you to switch preset straight away, but you lose access to switch on rev/comp/od." hi does this mean if in your preset you have programed od or comp ect , that it wont work coss your in preset, or do you just loose the ability to switch on and off. ?
I was using the Overdrive option in the drive section along with a Flanger. I don't have the unit to hand so I can't tell you the exact settings, let me know if you would like them
+Neil Spencer Bruce (Brucie) thank you for your respons. i have my unit in de drive en flanger. only the the exact setting i dont know. maybe if have time you can share. thnx
Hi there, no there isn't a problem, it is just that I liked to have the g-switch switch between presets and then have all of the effects available at my disposal. A bit like having a variety of different pedalboards at your feet. Rather than having to either choose preset mode and loose the od,comp and reverb or patch mode and have to do the longer pedal depress.
thanks I appreciate the quick response. So If I have sounds preprogramed on it, I can quickly change between presets using the buttons on the Nova, there is no delay in changing between presets? I am thinking of buying one because I like the idea of having preprogrammed sounds that I can step through but I also want to add an expression pedal to use as a wah and or volume pedal and I don't think you can do that and have the G switch, correct? From the reviews I have seen, this seems to be the best multi effects pedal and also has analog drives. Are there any other programmable multi effects units that you think are better
No Problem Andy. You could quickly change between presets in preset mode no problem, if you are in patch mode and use the longer depress there is a slight (very!) time lag, so this would be more suitable if you are changing between songs, rather than during a song. I did do another video about the differences, you can catch watch it here th-cam.com/video/PcEMw5_W-cA/w-d-xo.html You are correct you can't have the G-switch and an expression pedal at the same time, only one or the other. The Nova is a great unit, it has been a work horse though 100's of gigs for me, there are of course others out there, there are the Line 6 M-series Mutli-FX for a start (no analogue drives). My choice was because I have used TC Electronic products in the past I love their delays, so that was a no brainer for me, but some people don't like them, it is a matter of taste. Personally speaking I think it is a great unit and very capable, but of course there are some others on the market which might suit you better. Ideally I would recommend trying them out, but realise that this might not always be easy. If you have any more questions, please let me know.
thanks again, very helpful. If I want to have a wah wah sound, would you suggest I get an expression pedal and use the wah sound in this unit or can you have a wah pedal in front of this unit and plug it into the unit?
Well after 7 years of constant gigging and no problems....I guess that should answer the reliability question. Tone degradation in the loop? Nope I have not experienced that....have you?
considering this unit but im confused with this "switching problem" can you program 3 different presets 1.2.3. then bank up and get another 1.2.3 without a pause. is this so called delay in switching to do with going from pedal mode into preset mode only . i wont to program different settings on 1.2.3 and switch between them . quickly . im only used to boss 1234 up/ down lol.
do you still have the same opinion about this pedal now that you've had it 2 years, i want a effects pedal but i'm still undecided, lot's of them sound to digitally and i actually like my amp so i don't need really amp sims
Hi there THESANDOUCH82 Yes after all this time I still have the same opinion about the Nova System and I still use it all the time. The Nova is easily one of the best choices if you don't want amp sims. It does a have a pristine sound about it (which I like), but some may not. Can you try one out?
No unfortunately i can't try one out cause the music store here doesn't have one, but from what i see on youtube it looks pretty great. Thanks for the help and quick reply!
OK, tried it all weekend with 'switch-3', inc.chain variations etc.but returning it. It's a nice enough well built unit, but not for me. Loved the boost feature, ability to customise FX blocks, & the compressor, but I'm underwhelmed by most of the other FX, & overall tone. My Vox Tonelab LE sounds better overall, is more versatile, easier to use, & has a wah/expression pedal built in. Distortions are distinctly average - my TLLE & Marshall Govnr II pedal both give way better crunch. Ah well.
Great review, one question: I have the Nova Drive. Use it as a slight boost (using my amp's gain). So I'm using that already in the loop. Love it. Want the Nova Delay but can't I just get this and still run it all in the loop? You say u 'lose' the drive stage when u do that but in my case, if I'm only using the drive as a boost, it's no different that the way I use the Nova Drive now, right? I already have the g-switch too for presets. I'd love to store presets with boost and delay together. Thx
It is a tough question to ask. Personally I would say yes if it could get it at a good price in good condition. Bizarrely there aren’t that many alternatives these days, that are effects processors only, you would be looking at something with modelling, like the Boss Gt Series, Line 6 Helix, Axe FX etc. The only alternatives I could think of would be the Line 6 M Series or the AXE FX FX8 (which is very pricey indeed.) I am SO surprised that TC Haven’t made a replacement yet, I am hoping they will one day. Simply put it is a great effects unit, with great sounding effects, the analogue drive is a real bonus. I still use mine and have gigged with it for over 5 years now. I will be very sad when it dies (hopefully never!)
Good question, I don’t have any experience with the VOX, so I am probably the wrong person to ask about that one. Also the requirement for tubes is a very contentious issue and you will hear many opinions either way. The way I would look at it is this, digital v analogue, they are just different. Both have their pros and cons, but as a guitarist you must go with the gear which makes the sounds which you like and most importantly make you want to play more guitar. For the record I use a combination of both tubes (amp) and digital (pedals),
Hi Rene. I didn't actually make the switch myself, but it is custom made by brightonion.co.uk and a very resaonable price. I you google g-switch schematics you can find what you are looking for. My unit is sealed so difficult for me to get a photo for you, but I hope that helps. Neil
Hi there, thanks for your message. I haven’t uploaded any of my patches for the Nova I am afraid. What kind of sound are you looking for I might be able to help. Thanks, Neil
Ha; I'm pretty sure the 'delay when switching patch thing' refers to the slight gap in sound between patches while playing. So, with your example, either there actually is no 'delay' (gap) when switching patches or the delay (the effect effect) is such that it spills over to the next patch - which is desirable. However, you don't demonstrate, say, one distortion patch without delay to another - I can almost guarantee there will be a noticeable gap. Otherwise, awesome demo! I enjoyed it. Cheers
hello! great video. I need ask you something, do you have the diagram of yor home made 3-switch? If you have it, could you giv me? Thanks. Tomas from argentina
+Tomas Cogliatti Thank you for that! Unfortunately I don't have a diagram for the circuit as it was custom made for me. I do believe if you google 'digitech fs3x schematic' you can find the diagram which is exactly the same. Hope that helps, Neil
Yes, I heard you say it could. My bad. I have a G major rack unit... I was thinking about replacing it with this pedal. I use it with a Mesa solo head so I would really not be using the distortions in it.
PURE ANALOG CONTROLLER FOOT-MARSHALL, MARSHALL MG AMPLIFIERS FOR MORE AND OTHERS, HAS FOUR BANKS TO SAVE YOUR FAVORITE SOUND EFFECTS OF INTEGRATED TUNER, MY QUESTION IS THIS CAN ADAPT TO TC NOVA SYSTEM
Hey Neil, fantastic review of the Nova system. Would like to pick your brains about it are on Facebook, or do you have a website?etc? Or would you prefer I message you through TH-cam? Best regards Michael.
+mickey_blue_eyes Thanks for your message! Sure you can drop me a line at my website www.spencerbruce.com or via Facebook at Spencerbrucemusic (or on here if you want!)
Ah a helpful name change! That does sound strange, TC effects a always well defined and clean. Perhaps lacking in fullness which could be attributed to imperfect analogue circuits..which we like! As you can see I use Suhr riot as well. Pete Thorn's patches for the Nova have a JCM800 patch he created and I think that sounded ver good. Mesa...no this is the wrong unit, then again it isn't an amp modeller. Just not for you, I have the same thing with Line 6, want to like, but they just don't do it!
+Conor Cleare I agree, a wah (or even auto wah block) would be fantastic, as would perhaps a couple of amp models (so you could use it direct into PA etc), a polytune tuner built in and the ability to use Toneprints would make this awesome.
Which is fine, but if you need to tune to Eb (Say you are playing Hendrix, Stevie Ray, Extreme, Van Halen) then you are a little stuck also if you want to drop D or any other of the newer contemporary tuners. It is just a shame that's all.
Yup, as I always say to folk its not about whether gear is 'good' or 'bad' (that's subjective) - just whether its good or bad for 'you'. If we all liked the same thing it would be a boring world and we'd all be playing the same guitar through the same amp & using the same MFX set to the same patches! lol BTW, re 'imperfect analogue circuits'....surely, aren't the FX all digital & it's only the distortions that are analogue??
Apples and oranges. The overdrive and distortion in the tc are analog, the rest is digital but remember, this is no Boss mediocrity. And you can't di the reverbs this unit can do with analog circuitry (except for Spring reverb, of course)
Hi Al,
Thanks for your comment, I am not near my Nova system at the moment, but as soon as I am I will check for you. I suggest checking out the TC Limited Presets which are available online at the TC site and I am sure I based mine on one of Pete Thorns setting.
thanx for quick response lightb4sound i think im getting it. i see the advantage of having it in patch mode. but i could still have it in preset and use it like a boss. and having the extra switch you can have the best of both worlds. cheers
Compared to the Boss GT-10 I used to have, this is pristine, clear transparent and lively; the Boss is simply muffled.
Thanks for your kind words!
No worries. That is it in a nutshell, you get the best of both worlds should you choose to.
lol - I think you mean intonation!
Hi there, this is always and interesting topic, the lag issue. I tried to answer it in this video th-cam.com/video/PcEMw5_W-cA/w-d-xo.html
Could you please make a review of the Nova EQ? I would love to have just 3 freq like: High, Mid and low... and turn the gain up or down...
Hi Pablo Tru I will put this on the list of videos to do. Is there anything in particular you are interested in hearing?
Neil Spencer Bruce I have an American Standard Stratocaster, Im uploading a video of my gear and the sound that i have with my Nova System into a Blackstar Ht40. I would love to know the particular range of Freq to fly away with my Stratocaster. Thank you!
If they come out with a new version that is easier to work with I might go for another one. But it seemed nightmarish to work with & I really didn't care for the drive. I had the extra switch & everything. Sadly I didn't find these videos until I got rid of it. Loved the delay & reverb. I ended up & got the HOF & Flashback as stand alones which are great too.
greatvanzinni Hah!!! I see I replied some time back too!!! Old age ain't easy!
greatvanzinni The HOF and Flashback are fantastic, especially with some of the available tone prints. I also have both of them and I really do think they are fantastic! I tend to agree somewhat about how the Nova isn't the easiest unit to program, nothing beats hands on controls which you can just turn and understand. We shall see what comes out one day hopefully!
thanx for answering my questions lightb4sound i now understand. cheers
Get one ;)
Sounds like you have reverb on from the amp.
Hi Pat, this is a possible method, but this will occur notes to be sharp across the neck.
Hi Neil,I just got the nova system to put in front of my fender Princeton reverb amp. Is there a video out that is a simple get acquainted Basic start from the beginning. Nice and slow for the non-computer type like me.
Hi Jack, congratulations on your Nova system. You can find a playlist of Nova videos on my channel, but this is probably a good place to start when connecting to your amp th-cam.com/video/Pzs05feJOpo/w-d-xo.html
Give me a shout, let me know how you get on. all the best, SB
Hi Michael, it does have a tuner onboard, it is pretty good, but I prefer the Boss Tuner for various reasons, so hence the reason I used that
Thank you or pointing out the point about the 4 cable system.
Good luck!
Im very interested in thta switch of yours... Im still using my nova system years and years on. Perhaps have a schematic for it?
Hi there, it is the G Switch www.brightonion.co.uk/fs3-footswitch/ I am sure you can find a schematic online as I believe it is qiute a simple pedal. All the best, Neil
I got rid of mine ! It was too unreliable and froze up none stop ! A few times live a had to reboot it during the show .... A real dissaster !! Hd500x no problems 👍
Emil Bendixen interesting, touch wood I have gigged my extensively for the last 3 years and only had one issue which was my fault, never had it freeze at all. I must be lucky!
probably better to go with Boss or Strymon at this point.
Thanks
You will need to check your input and output level settings in the the menu. Try reducing your output level from the Nova.
I've just bought a second hand one. How do I delete all the previous settings to start again.
I could hear a delay between the press of the boost and the actual boost. Some millisecs not something important. Not so analog like TC says :/
Can I use the Boss FS-6 as a switcher for this?
No unfortunately you can't, the wiring is different.
Hi Neil ! Do you thimk it s still worth to buy this nova system or would you rather recommend the line 6 hx effects ?
@@flipmacyt No worries. Give me a shout if you have any more questions, all the best, Neil
Hi dude. Whats that midi controller? In the left
Hi Andres, thanks for watching. It is a G Switch, it is not Midi, it just works with the Nova. All the best, Neil
Hi Neil,
Thanks for the excellent review. Could you provide me with a photo of the inside of the selfmade G-switch please? I would like to make one myself and would like to know how the wires run and what diodes etc are in there.
Thanks
Rene
The "Sometime Later" moment is why I got rid of mine. Great sounds but what a pain to program.
Why is the drive is too slow to kick in when you engage it? There is latency
You can also use a MIDI footswitch!
Yes you can, you I did this video here with the Tech 21 midi moose th-cam.com/video/P7j2sTeAPA8/w-d-xo.html
Have you tried using Nova Drive before the amp hooked up with Nova System in the loop to use 4CM?
I haven't tried this, but it could work well give that they are both midi too!
I'm going to try every possibility. Just bought one! (the red devil :) )
BFGALL Good luck with it!! I am sure you'll love it! Give me a shout if you have any questions!
I have no noise and it is a revelation.. and before that a black hole. hahaha. :D
How is the noise? Does it hiss, humm, etc? I plan on using it in the fx loop for non drive uses.
The unit is very very quiet, there is no hiss or hum (perhaps if you set the output level too high, but you would know about this when you hear it), the only noise would be from the Amp loop, but you can set a noise gate with the unit
Neil Spencer Bruce
Thanks that settle it, I am buying one.
pastorkev777 It really is a great unit, of course there are some limitations that you will see people mention, but for a solid multi effects which sounds great, has fantastic delay, reverbs and modulations, with lots of options, you can't really go wrong I don't think. If only they would release a version which enabled Tone prints, I would be the happiest person alive!
Neil Spencer Bruce
One thing though, is the tremolo tapable?
Hi Jordan, it isn't a looper pedal it is a G-switch that James at Bright Onion made for me. If you email him he will be able to help you. The cable is a stereo jack cable, not mono!
I lost communication with the g switch. What do I do?
Hi there, sorry to hear that. I would suggest the first thing is to make sure the cable is okay. Let me know how you get on, all the best, Neil
Hi Bruce ! I know you sold your nova system now ... you regrest it or itsok? You miss it ? 😀.. curious
Hi there! Good question...yes and no! I am very happy with what I have now, but the Nova was one hell of a unit so I do miss elements of it!! I am still (after all these years!) Hoping that TC bring out a version 2!!
Great review !!!
Hi, pleas, can i put this multiefect to the preamp ? Because my amp hasnt got FX Loop. Thank you.
chodil770 You can yes, this is how I use it sometimes, directly into the front of the amp, but obviously the amp is set to clean.
Neil Spencer Bruce hey Bruce how does this sounds behind a tube amp ??
Is that box from Bright Onion, a 3 Looper? Looked on their site, couldn't find one similar to yours. Also, how do you have it hooked up? What kind of cable is that? Thanks.
lightb4sound you said."The other way enables you to switch preset straight away, but you lose access to switch on rev/comp/od." hi does this mean if in your preset you have programed od or comp ect , that it wont work coss your in preset, or do you just loose the ability to switch on and off. ?
can you please tell me what kind of setting u use for lenny kravitz.

I was using the Overdrive option in the drive section along with a Flanger. I don't have the unit to hand so I can't tell you the exact settings, let me know if you would like them
+Neil Spencer Bruce (Brucie)
thank you for your respons.
i have my unit in de drive en flanger.
only the the exact setting i dont know.
maybe if have time you can share.

do you need to use the G switch? is there a problem with the speed when changing between patches using the buttons on the Nova System?
The Nova unfortunately doesn't have a wah effect in it (one of the biggest downsides) so you would need to use and external wah in front of the unit.
Hi! nice review! But can't you use the Nova System as a Preamp and plug it right into the poweramp section of your tube amp?
no mention of reliability and tone degradation in a loop?
Well after 7 years of constant gigging and no problems....I guess that should answer the reliability question. Tone degradation in the loop? Nope I have not experienced that....have you?
@@NeilSpencerBruce hi bud thanks for reply. just got mine 30 mins ago
cant hear any degradation in loop.
Glad to hear that!
Won't run a midi pedal as an expression pedal will not calibrate
can you use 2 different modulation settings at the same time?
Hi there, you can't use two modulations at the same time, unless you used the 'detune' in the pitch block as a kind of chorusy type sound.
I still need to keep my polytune and looper, I might as well just keep using all my pedals.
Hi Neil, thanks for watching! Hoping that TC might update this (finally) with those bits contained within it! All the best, Neil
@@NeilSpencerBruce seems TC is more interested in selling individual pedals than revisiting the Nova unfortunately.
pls tell me the delay settings at 6:33.
considering this unit but im confused with this "switching problem" can you program 3 different presets 1.2.3. then bank up and get another 1.2.3 without a pause. is this so called delay in switching to do with going from pedal mode into preset mode only . i wont to program different settings on 1.2.3 and switch between them . quickly . im only used to boss 1234 up/ down lol.
do you still have the same opinion about this pedal now that you've had it 2 years, i want a effects pedal but i'm still undecided, lot's of them sound to digitally and i actually like my amp so i don't need really amp sims
Hi, whre can i buy a switch just like yours? Ive just got the nova system and im looking for a cheap switch
You'll have no problems there!
What about a Y cable?
Thx
You just loose the inability to switch them on or off. Which isn't really a problem if you work with presets.
Are All The Stomp Boxes and Effects In it Are Analog
Hi there, no only the drive section is analogue, the rest is digital.
Neil
anywhere we can found your patches?
+Neil Spencer Bruce (Brucie) tanks you Neil
Can this go into the loop? Ok it has to go into the front.. no good for me..
Yes it can go in the loop. I explain everything in this video th-cam.com/video/f4U_PEq4XMQ/w-d-xo.html
Yes, I heard you say it could. My bad. I have a G major rack unit... I was thinking about replacing it with this pedal. I use it with a Mesa solo head so I would really not be using the distortions in it.
line 6 m9 or m13.. m13 has the 4 cable method
I can't understand the stomp order
In what way? if you give some more detail I might be able to explain. Thank for watching.
+Neil Spencer Bruce (Brucie) Hi Neil many thanks for your reply. I have emailed you direct from your website.
Best regards Michael.
mickey_blue_eyes Thanks for that! I have dropped you a line, all the best, Neil
You could...but that would be a considerable mod, and probably more complicated than my simple soldering skills :)
hey could you mod it so you can have 4 cable method.... ??? ;D
"iTS GOT A FLASHING THING".....SHYEA! im sold....why no Wah???? big bummer...but always can buy a wah and strap it on...
It's all about the flashing thing!!
if this pedal had a wah and a fuzz it would be perfect
+Conor Cleare I agree, a wah (or even auto wah block) would be fantastic, as would perhaps a couple of amp models (so you could use it direct into PA etc), a polytune tuner built in and the ability to use Toneprints would make this awesome.
+Neil Spencer Bruce (Brucie) I only bought mine 2 days ago. still cant figure out how to set up the expression pedal
+Conor Cleare You should just plug it in and then assign parameters in the Utility Menu. Give me a shout if you are still having problems.
...its NOT a crap tuner - it tunes VERY well. It simply stops a low E.
Which is fine, but if you need to tune to Eb (Say you are playing Hendrix, Stevie Ray, Extreme, Van Halen) then you are a little stuck also if you want to drop D or any other of the newer contemporary tuners. It is just a shame that's all.
Feedbackboy1 there was apparently a little work around but I can't find it anywhere. It was a TH-cam comment that I can't find anywhere
Great work! :) Cecilia xo
The crap onboard tuner will be down to the same reason as not having the 4-cable option.
This sounds purely digital and not analog. I prefer the Carl Martin Quattro, it's truly an analog multi efx unit.
Apples and oranges. The overdrive and distortion in the tc are analog, the rest is digital but remember, this is no Boss mediocrity. And you can't di the reverbs this unit can do with analog circuitry (except for Spring reverb, of course)
