Nova System is the complete, floor-based effects solution for the dedicated guitar player who knows quality when he sees it. Its unique inclusion of an all-analog programmable distortion/overdrive section under preset and expression control makes it the perfect choice whether you want to trim down your rack setup, step up from your pedal patchwork or simply just want the ultimate combination of operational simplicity and audio superiority.
Add to this an array of effects taken straight from the king of floor-based processors; G-System and you have top-notch compression, EQ, noise gate, modulation, pitch, delay and reverb right at your feet. All you need is a guitar and an amp and youre good to go first class.
The TC stuff is far more quality and professional unit than anything line 6 could dream of putting out.
Tried one of these a couple of times. The overdrives leave me a bit cold, not warm enough for my liking. However, the modulation, time-based effects are INCREDIBLE. Put this thing in stereo and mess with the delays and it's beautiful.
This is truly a brilliant bit of kit and deserves to be championed, nice review Andy.
I think this is better than buying seperate pedals the effects sound awsome.
I have a question for all the people making negative comments about the Nova systems tone..What kind of amp are you using..I mean come on if you are using a Gorilla 10 watt solid state swarm of bee's amp and a $119 dollar guitar the Nova system will do you little good...
The tuner is accessed by holding down the TAP switch.
Preset #3 did a pretty convincing Ride The Lightning tone. Sweet!
finally a good nova system demo...its about time!!
Good job Andy!!!
I recommend this pedal 100% if need something else like a looper o something then buy it seperatly, the unit is compact enough so you can add another 3 or 4 pedal withiout havin a huge rig.
THE BLUE!!!!! wow andy you really suprised me there.
@Botdra He are playing in preset mode, so the pedals indicates the preset number and note the effects being used.
@elear10 - Yes, I do believe that's possible, but you may want to download the manual at TC's website just to make sure.
the first reverb+delay+comp sounds just like the edge
I hope PGS posts the settings on their webpage! Please?
I tried the M13 and the Nova System extensively before buying the Nova System, and the Nova was out before, and they have built a system that uses their effects from the G-System and their ground pedals. The M13 emulates the sound of other historic pedals and throws in a few crazy Line6 sounds. The key difference is that the TC will not wipe out the tone of your amp. I you have a great sound you'll still hear it through the effects.
It bothers me that you can't choose the placement of effects on this unit. If you use your amps' drive and stick the NS in the FX Loop then you get the great reverbs and delays, as well as a Volume boost for solos. But the Pitch-Shift, Compressor, Flanger and Phasor all sound wierd in the FX loop and I think most guitarists would agree that these are effects that work better in front of the amp. Shame they couldn't do the 4-cable method like BOSS.
how did you get the gilmour sound?
You had me at "The Blue"! (6:48)
Take note I made my first comment before watching the whole video. Now you're playing Gilmour?! Best videos, ever.
way to "nail" those Zeppelin licks
great demo, as always, thanks PGS !
@B2Rockin Well, this unit provides great sound quality, over any boss product in my opinion, BOSS is not bad, if you need a lot of presets, the USB editing of them maybe is the way to go. About the Boss delay, i think it kind of sucks a lot a tone, especially the models upon the DD-6, but if you like it then thats all that counts. TC Nova is small enough to add a few others pedals in your pedalboard no problem at all
Those are some pretty cool tones!
I have one of these. I really need to get it out of the box again - you've done a great job of showing off it's potential. I wasn't a great fan of the OD/distortion it looks like I just need to spend a bit more time tweaking it.
Amazing gilmour tone!
five stars!
Very, very impressive... I've always thought they were fully digital, but since they're not, it's extremely warm sounding & convenient.
(goes on the wish-list!)
WOW...preset one was like listening the TerribleTed himself!!
@Gitarmorten Yes it has an speaker simulator, and yes, you cant edit the thing, but i have used it in live perfomances, had an emergency where mi amp just blow off, and it really sounded great, i prefer the amp obvioslosly, but for a small gig it gets the job done.
how does the nova system take dirt and/ or other pedals in front of it? do they work good together?
Thanks a lot Andy and PGS team! Keep up the good stuff!
I was waiting for this review for a long time. Is it possible for you to share your preset settings?
I own the NS and though it's not intuitive(lots of parameters), this unit is absolutely brilliant and worth spending the time to learn its secrets.
I can tell you that the demo provides only a hint of it's capabilities.
@alfonsovai Actually, the Nova System has an amp simulator :). Or not an amp simulator, but a speaker simulator. But I don't think you can edit it or anything. You can only turn it on or off...
@ynohpocac From my understanding, this would be an ideal set up. Run your OD into the front of the amp, run the Nova System into your effects loop. When you run the Nova System into your loop it will automatically bypass its drive, so you'll be in perfect shape with your pedal. :)
Haha, I just bought this.
Quick video on my purchase, thanks pro guitar shop!
great playing!
@Botdra He was using the pedal in preset mode.. sort of like patches
Very good demo!! Some of the finest sounds available in this unit.
Also, fantastic playing as always: cool Zep stuff at the beginning, and I just love you version of Gilmour´s "The Blue" at the end!
It´s quite interesting how this unit can also emulate Univibe sounds. I´m using good stompboxes into a crunchy AC-30 right now, but I wonder if this would work, too. Probably it would require a pure clean amp instead of a crunchy sound...
@LeeChavezMusic Hi gain (HI!) distortion and subtle overdrives. NS has the two modes. Analog!
@olydj2000 Yes, but you have to know: The quality of effects in a loop depends on the AMP LOOP. If the effects sounds good in alone, they have to sound good in a loop. If don't sound, the loop is the problem...
@ebeatworld I've noticed that as well. they get more vid errors too. They need to step it up before some other video site takes advantage of this
I love this pedal! Especially the way you played "The Blue" by David Gilmour... first pedal I have ever seen that has a built in whammy pedal... only ever known the Digitech Whammy...
it actually is analog overdrive, the digital parts are just controlling the analog od section
Fine, buy the M13. You will love the delay, you will love the modulation, you will totally freak out over how nice the looper is......and you will never use the dirt or compression or EQ.
Over all the M13 is a sweeeet pedal, I just hate having a pedal where I never want to use 50% of it. So, if I were going to go back, I would get the M9 and I would use it for delay, modulation, and looping ONLY.
Now THAT (!) would be worth it!
Andy, you do always get the best tones. It would be awesome if you can review the Line 6 M13 just because I know you can get amazing sounds out of it and I can see what settings to do :]
i would say nova system... a lot of people tend to prefer it over other pedals.. check out some forum talks about it and plus the drive is all analog and stuff.. plus tc have a reputation of making really kick ass pedals.. so id say tc! go check some reviews out online
Andy DOES always find the best tones in each pedal review. This one has waaaay too many knobs for me! Would be a great for "The Edge/U2", could leave half his rig at home!hahahaa
Wow that really surprised me. It sounds so warm and natural likr analog, yet it's didgital. TC have obviously gone to some great lengths with their programming here.
For the nod to Gilmour at the ned, Andy is officially a legend|!
HI guys, i have 2 questions
1 What gear are you using in this video and how you connected them.
2 You guys know something about Nova System with USB interface???
@wanaplayrough
Vox, line 6 or boss are really cool devices too, to me the main diference is that with nova you get analog distortion and overdrive. You dont get as many efects as on the other units, but, every efect is high quality and totally usuable.
As for recording aspects, it does have an speaker simulation, wich can be used to go direct to line, and it sounds really well, even for live situations. No USB ports on this unit, but i still thing is overall better than the other multiefect
@stebbZv Think of it as a pedal board so the answer is yes. I'm not sure about the channel switching though
Heya, I always love your demos! Great sound and great playing once again! I have a question tho, you run all effects always in front of the amp right? I know you can run this unit in the fx loop of the amp, but is there any way to run the effects in the loop and the drive in the front end? Or is it just everything in the front end or everything in the loop (which would limit the analog drive use)? Thanks and keep up the great demos!
I'm playing the bass guitar, and i was searching for a good delay pedal. I found the Nova Delay a very good one, but this might be better! Is it a good pedal for bass as well, cause most pedals are played for guitar!
Would the Nova be best in front or in the effects loop of an amp? I ask because I know drive generally placed before the preamp and delay/reverb/chorus after.
David Gilmour well done andy!!!!!!!
@thegovanment Yes, it's only push and turn off the comp and drive. Has built in gate and EQ. No wha wha here. TC electronic knows well that drives and wha-wha are things bad in digital, so they put the drives in Nova System analog. And the wha you have to use your own. The whammy you control with the expression pedal.
@MrJackanthony I don't think so, althoug I think it has a double delay so you can set 2 independent tempos, check the manual on the TC web. I did time ago.
Can you use a few other effects with this pedal? E.g. A Wah, possibly Volume Pedal and a Boss TU2? Can you just daisy chain link them like a pedalboard?
Hm, tasty. I'm really liking what I hear from t.c electronic lately.
What's the songs at 5:25? Sounds ridiculously awesome!
@alfonsovai I came across this at the perfect time. I was about to throw down on a pedaltrain board and a bunch of boss pedals but saw I can get this for cheaper and the effects are high quality. Do you really recommend this over all boss products? You can't lose with a boss delay though, so many pro's use it.
@RisingEternity I think you mean distortion. And I don't know if the Nova does that or not.
Distortion = High Gain
Overdrive = Boost for solo`s and other things.
This pedal... If the MXR Phase 90 is like Van Halen in a box... Than the TC Electronic Nova System is like The Edge in a box..
Nice :)
What was the last song Andy played in the demo? It sounded brilliant!
I've got both and the ME-50 can't even be compared to this. The tones and effects are just streets ahead... but it is considerably more expensive.
Does the overdrive clean up nicely when you lower the guitar volume? Is the pick dymanics good on the overdrive and distortion?
I was really hoping for a more in-depth review of individual effects. Usually your reviews are so incredibly detailed, but this one didn't introduce anything that's not already on TH-cam...
Actually, tc electronics focus on quality, this does not have amp simulations, no usb port, no looper.
What you do get is 100% analog overdrive and distorsion, wich can be digital controlled.
Many types of delay, includind a very cool dual delay (think the edge).
Amazing effects that does not color your original guitar sound, like all the boss, digitech and line 6 effects, which i had so i know what im talking about.
Andy do you honestly love your tone? Because I could tell... you find the best tones
@cosmogang I know evryone is very picky about their dirt but 'historically tragic' ? Most people on the net actually rate the distortion models very highly , to the extent that they, like me have been happy to sell a lot of their individual pedals. For the money - £300 - it really IS worth it, epsecially when you consider an individual DL4 or MM4 is about £200new. To buy the set would cost about £800 new.
That drive section sounds awesome in that thing. Hey Andy, maybe do a demo of the Ibanez WH-10V2. You havent done a wah demo in years.
Hello. Thanks for this great Demo. I have the Nova system and I can't make it work with a Vol pedal ernie ball 6166, Do you know if is compatible with the pedal input of the nova system? Should I connect it differently? Do you have any advice? It's driving me crazy! Thank you!
Are you using an expression pedal with the Pitch shifter examples?
How did you guys create that "Scooped Distortion" sound ? I own a Nova system and never got to that great sound (-; please share your settings.
@alfonsovai If the effects are superior to boss pedals I will for sure be getting this for simplicity purposes. I'm a gigging guitarist and can definitely appreciate that. I don't want pedals flying all over the place. Do you know what the g system has that this doesn't besides the univibe feature and more preset storage? Thanks!
the blue from gilmour's on an island.
Likely you weren't in the right input mode. I had this same problem at GC, it's required that you are in drive mode when you plug into the drive input, otherwise the drive section is bypassed and thus, no signal. RTFM, have a nice day.
I have a big and simple question.. this machinne will work in a 65 princeton reverb withoout fx loop ????
Thanks for any reply! regards
hello there! nice playing and nice unit. I'm buying this next week, I hope I like it!
I have a question: can you run the Nova System as stompbox and use a different midi controller to change presets? I'm thinking on getting a small midi controller or even make one to match the size of the Nova System and put it on a pedalboard just down the Nova. That way I can control the different presets with the custom midi controller and control de effects in the Nova System.
thanks for the video!!!
What midi pedal would control this? What can the midi do exactly...? I've never used midi on an effects pedal before.
Also, how many presets can be stored?
Did you've used a MIDI footswitch to change the Nova's presets on this video?
Does this unit contain the same sound and parameters as the Corona Tri-Chorus? Can I dial up and access that particular lush sound?
YEAH FADE TO BLACK!!!!!
Could I conceivably use on of these as a sort of preamp and play it through something like an EHX 44 magnum into a cab? Or would it suck?
what is that song in the background when Andy is talking?? 1:11 - 2:11
Hi, Perfect demonstration. I would like to ask you a question, the song from the minute you touch 2.17, first with the "Plate Reverd" and then with the delay, what is that song?
Great demo. I have a question: the wham effect at 7:04 needs an expression pedal? I want to buy a Nova System and a expression pedal but i have a doubt behind Boss FV500H and FV500L. Witch is compatible? Thanks.
Hey guys, what's Andy playing from 2:17 to 3:25 ? Thanks.
Sure. Except this was out long before either of those.
whats the name of the metallica song? i like that riff, but forgot the name
Hi... I have this system... running it with a Suhr Badger18 Combo Amp that has a serial loop. When I hook up Nova per instructions... I get no sound. The only way I can make this work is hooking the guitar into the Nova, and then Nova to amp input. While this is sort of ok, I know the serial loop will sound better. I am wondering if the serial loop is not working because of my cable choice. Do I need 1/4" TRS connector cable for ALL hookups in the serial loop method? Thanks.
Can you use your own amp's distortion with this pedal?
Does this one have line outpots for direct recording?
what two songs is he playing in the beginning?
Nice blue solo :) but do you have a whammy pedal, but this feature?
That's the sound of a double-stop bend. I very much doubt that you'd hear any digital artifacts at this bit depth and sample rate. In addition, I understand that the overdrive/distortions in this box are all analogue?
i have a marshall jvm 410 head and i looking for a multipedal but i have confusion in wich way is better to use in front or loop i love the dist of my marshall help me thanks.
Can this do ambient reverb sounds?
I´d love to kwon how the digital fx of the Nova System compare to the new G Major2
Wich guitar do you use?? a Strat??
What was the song from 7:03 - 7:46? It sounded very Vai-ish with the whammy octave effect. Were you using an expression pedal or was the Nova just doing that automatically?
How you compare the distortion of this pedal with TC Electronic NDR-1 Nova Drive Overdrive and Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal? Thanks!!
@xdivinebladex Like I said to that other dude, the M13 has HUGE drawbacks because of its TERRIBLE boost/comp/distortion models. BUT - the looper is worth the price of admission.
