I saw this game live on TV back in 85! It was really amazing! Kakapanindig balahobo seeing Samboy block shots of the taller Americans harap harapan and Caidic bombing away those triples! Of course who can forget Chip Engelland, all throughout the tournament he did not show his scoring prowess so that he would not get scouted by the opposition. But came championship time, he unloaded 43 points! The US never knew what hit them! Brilliant strategy by Coach Ron Jacobs. Kudos also to Dennis Still who at 6'8" was a forward playing center against taller opponent. Jeff Moore was a pillar of strength also and of course The Director Hector Calma who ran rings around his guard, Franz Pumaren also contributed points from beyond the arc. The best Philippine team ever! The US team they beat here was no pussy team as some of their players went on to play in the NBA.
Glory days in Philippine basketball. I remember how spectacular Samboy is... hitting three consecutive 3 point shots and blocked 6'11" guy from USA. The unstoppable force of Allan Caidic and relentless attacked by Chief, Jeff and Dennis. Awesome Philippines team!

Pero di ibig sabihin nun ay nagtagal sila sa NBA. Karamihan sa kanila ay bangko o kaya naman ay na-cut, kaya nga sila naglaro sa PBA eh. Ang totoong sukatan ay kung yung mga professionals na mga starters din sa kani-kanilang team ang makakalaro natin. Mas gugustuhin ko pang matalo natin ang team ng China kesa sa USA team na ito.

Venom 12 Ummm, salamat pero alam ko po ibig sabihin ng Divison 1. Graduate po ako sa isang Div. 1 school sa California. Pero kait na division 1 pa, maliit na porsyento lang ang nada-draft sa NBA. Bilangin mo kung ilang ang nada-draft every year. Eh libo ang division 1 players sa buong America. Tapos, sa mga na-draft na yun iilan lang ang tatagal sa NBA. At bilang lang ng daliri sa kamay ang magiging successful (not necessarily superstar ha). Ang point ko, di porke division1 playet ay NBA-quality ma. Malaking accomplishment talaga ng mga Pinoy ang matalo nila yung mga Div. 1 player na yun. Totoo. Pero yung mga pinadala na yun ehy malabong sila ang pinakamagagaling sa batch nila. Dahil yung mga top prospects from college usually di na sumasali sa mga international competiton na ganyan dahil baka nga naman ma-injure pa sila bago sila ma-draft sa NBA. Anyway, ang point ko, di natin pwede basta-basta sabihing tinalo natin ang US. Dapat ilagay sa context. Dahil kung ang pinadala nila ay yung mga NBA players dati, well, alam naman natin kung ano ang mangyayari. But still, San Miguel fan ako dati pa at mga paborito kong players dati sila Samboy, Allan Caidic at Hecto Calma. So alam ko talagang may ibubuga ang mga ito.

With due respect to all Filipinos, the 1985 Philippine team sponsored by San Miguel had 3 or 4 naturalized American players plus an American Coach with dual citizenship... Their first 5 always playing in the court almost continuously are 3 naturalized Americans (Steel, Moore, and Ingeland) and just 2 Filipinos (Caidic and Lim with alternate Calma, Pumaren, Dignadise, or Ituri)...
I guess, they can not really take FULL Credit for their back-to-back 1985 ABC & Jones Cup Championship Victories... compared to the 1973 ABC Champion which is all 12 Filipinos without naturalized Imports and a Filipino Coach... That was AMAZING, that I could really salute 100%!

I know we should be proud, but we did have 3 imports to win. If we didn't have Chip Engeland di tayo nanalo that night. He hit 10-3 point shots that game. Also, the sad reality was, The US didn't send their best players during the jones cup, this was the B team. I saw this via delayed telecast in '85. My father still has this recorded sa betamax mga tol!

Kenny Gattison was selected by the Phoenix Suns in the 3rd round (55th overall) of the 1986 NBA draft. A 6'8" forward-center, he in nine NBA seasons for 3 different teams. He played for the Phoenix Suns (1986-87, 1988), Charlotte Hornets (1989-95) and Vancouver Grizzlies (1995-96).[1] On February 22, 1996 he was traded by the Grizzlies to the Orlando Magic, and on August 9, 1996 the Magic traded him to Utah Jazz, but he did not appear in any games for those teams.
In his NBA career, Gattison played in 494 games and scored a total of 3,923 points. Harold Pressley was selected by the Sacramento Kings in the 1st round (17th overall pick) of the 1986 NBA Draft. He played the shooting guard and small forward positions for four years with the Kings, averaging 9.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Seeing less opportunities once the Kings hired coach Dick Motta, in 1990 Pressley signed a contract with Joventut Badalona of the Spanish ACB league,[1] winning two consecutive championships in 1991 and 1992 and reaching the 1992 Euroleague final alongside Jordi Villacampa and Corny Thompson. Joe Wolf played in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was the 13th overall pick of the 1987 NBA Draft, selected by the Los Angeles Clippers. He played college basketball at the University of North Carolina and reached the NCAA tournament all four years under coach Dean Smith. He earned the Carmichael-Cobb Award as UNC's outstanding defensive player and the Jimmie Dempsey Award as UNC's overall statistical leader as a senior in 1987. Lastly, he was elected ACC First Team and ACC All-Tournament Team. He averaged 4.2 points and 3.3 rebounds per game throughout an 11-year professional career.
In February 2005, a vote was conducted by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel to select the all-time Wisconsin high school boys basketball team. As a result of this vote, Joe Wolf was named Wisconsin's all-time greatest high school basketball player based on his dominant four-year performance at Kohler High School.
