I'm with you %100 my brother.
It's a very dangerous turning point for music creation in general that will probably lead to a very steep slope.

I'm honestly really concerned that in ten years time, we're just not gonna know what music is real, and what was created with a text prompt :/

Very much in agreement about the idea of having a label when an artist uses AI, like the lyric advisory label. I will say, the only thing I'll really defend Wilson on here is that at least he was honest about using AI. I'm imagining we've all already been consuming AI-generated music in one form or another without even knowing it because there's no regulation saying artists or record labels have to tell us they're using it...

Oh for sure, I respect his honesty about it at least, but I hope this is a one and done from him!

Not much to add there, especially as a creative myself (photo, video and written word). "AI" (which is not really AI, but let's use the common name for it) has its use in a creative's toolbox, but should never be a replacement for actual work.

Amen to that, I have no issues with it being used for guidance, accenting or refinement, but it should never be the only thing used as a creative source

Great thoughts! I'm working on my video response on it now :)

I'm with you 100% on this one. AI use will be a deterrent for me for new music, which is sad. I do tend to favor bands that play live and agree our wallets is the only thing we as the consumers can do.

Bro. You need to check out the album by Resuscitate. I missed it, but based on your love of Ubiquity, BTBAM, Opeth, you'd absolutely love it

as a composer,ai frightens me. Some of these have become very good. Why should a label, a promoer etc invest in an artist, when they could spare the expense and just use AI to write a hit?

This is exactly why there needs to be strict regulations on the use of AI, a machine should simply not be allowed to take the job of a hard working musician!

Quite a lot to unpack there Ian. I don't agree that AI will 'kill the music industry'. It will kill 'creativity', but if there's money to be made the music industry will use it.
Will record labels be able to resist the urge to employ AI to create 'new' songs by bands or artists that are no longer with us, and pass them off as previously unreleased?
There's a ton of bands which spring to mind whose songs are so formulaic that it's difficult to tell one from another. Meshuggah for example. While a handful of their songs stand out from the rest and are absolute bangers, I'd argue that the other 95% are indistinguishable from each other. I honestly believe that should they be afflicted with writer's block and allow AI to generate their next album noone would ever know.
And perhaps I'm being pessimistic but I can't picture a world where 'AI content' advisory stickers are seen on album and cd packaging, as bands would never risk losing sales by admitting to using AI.
But how can any music be created which 'pushes the boundaries' when AI simply trawls what already exists to produce something 'new'? Surely any musician with an ounce of artistic integrity would never consider using AI? On one hand I applaud Steven Wilson for his honesty in revealing that he's used AI to help create a Christmas single. On the other hand, I can't disagree with your arguement that if he was unable to write said song without resorting to AI then perhaps he shouldn't have bothered. Wouldn't a Christmas song by definition have to incorporate the same tired old tropes that every other tired old Xmas song has relied on? How can AI possibly produce a new take on that 'genre' when it's trawling through s**t like 'Last Christmas' by Wham, and 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' by Mariah Carey?
Nevertheless, ultimately, all musicians are free to create whatever they choose in order to make a living, and consumers will either like it and buy it or disregard it.

It won't stop. Even If you stop it locally for a while, it will still be made elsewhere. And it's only going to get better (and rapidly too).

A.I. will democratize access to music, art, games, stories. What you call "ripping off" is very close to what humans also do when they listen to others music and then write new music. Humans *literally* train off the work of others.

Nice to see people who are really salty about AI. You know why are you so salty? That's because you have no real talent. The slop you are making is worse than AI's slop. The really talented musician isn't afraid. People will come and pay for his music anyway. That's the truth.

Not really the case. Look I think A.I. is unstoppable and it's going to be better than the *best* humans in 20 years. At just about everything.
No, I'm saying you are being unrealistic. The best chess players in the world can't beat A.I. any more. The music went from trash, to interesting, and it will get better than anything you can do.
And if you create something new, they'll be able to duplicate it before you can really get going.
