Ommadawn changed me too! Holy shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I totally relate to your reaction! I used to listen to this every night in 1978! Thank you so much! Loved your reaction!
Love your description of today's Roger Waters, very correct. I would extend the list a bit more with the following: Alan Parsons (Eye in the sky), ELO (Out of the blue), Procul Harum (Live in concert) and Uriah Heep (Salisbury). Thank you for including Camel's Snow Goose, a very underrated disc. Btw, Jethro Tull still exists.
Nice list. But no Gentle Giant ??? But it's your number 2 that surprises me. Why ? Because I never heard of it ! The first thing I'll do after writing this is go to TH-cam and discover it. Love your channel. Also your visits on The Prog Corner. Keep up the good work !
Oh my GOD you are in for such an experience!! I am so excited for you to listen to that gem for the first time! Gentle Giant would probably make the list if I hadn't listened to them for the first time only a couple of months ago haha, The Power and the Glory is AMAZING!!
@@RhymeSignatures You are right, it's pretty good ! Reminds me of Rick Wakeman's Round Table and Center of the Earth. Same vibe. Thanks for the discovery man !
@@RhymeSignatures the album the power and the pasion is great, tells a story similar to war of the worlds. they are german and have an accent but sing in english most of the time.
When Covid lockdown hit, I got bored one week and made my top 100 albums of all time. The White Album and Abbey Road took the top two spots. Ommadawn came in at #3. Four more Oldfield albums made the list. Six by Pink Floyd inc. solo albums, Five Genesis related. And at least one by Jethro Tull, Moody Blues, ELO, ELP, Aphrodite’s Child, Yes, Gentle Giant, Caravan, Camel, Wishbone Ash, King Crimson, Renaissance, Supertramp, Kate Bush, Traffic, Alan Parson Project, and Marillion.
what a great list .all those records are here also and pink floyd is of course prog .war of the worlds is such a great record and the artwork . i hope you do more prog
Great list. I was a bit surprised you went with ITCOTKC vs. the Wetton-period stuff. Thought maybe with how influential Red in particular was on progressive metal you might have picked that one. Totally agree with you about The Yes Album - it's my favourite 70s Yes record. IMO the only 70s Yes albums without any filler or nonsense are The Yes Album and Close to the Edge. I'm not actually familiar with your top two picks. For some reason I've just never spent much time with Mike Oldfield. I need to remedy that soon... My own list: 10. National Health - Of Queues & Cures 9. Klaatu - 3:47 EST 8. Rush - Hemispheres 7. Van Der Graaf Generator - Still Life 6. Yes - The Yes Album 5. Gentle Giant - Three Friends 4. King Crimson - Larks Tongues in Aspic 3. Genesis - Trick of the Tail 2. Magma - M.D.K. 1. Jethro Tull - Minstrel in the Gallery
I very very nearly went with Red, but itcotck had a much bigger impact on me when I first heard it, so in it goes! I think you'll love War of the Worlds, it feels like every single British person of a certain age is intimately familiar with it, but it didn't reach across the pond quite as much!
This is nice list and I really liked your camel shout out there. My favourite Genesis album, and to be honest I like mostly all of them in their own way, is The Lamb. My favourite Rush album changes daily. But I always have a soft spot for Fly By Night.
Nice list. I never connected with Close to the Edge( I mean its good) but maybe it is since I didnt get into older prog until later. Will have to check out Ommadawn finally.
great picks! I can't rank them, but those are my favorites: King Crimson - Red Genesis - Selling England By The Pound Gentle Giant - Power And The Glory Renaissance - Scheherazade and Other Stories Yes - Relayer Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick ( with honorable mention to the criminally underrated Roots For Branches) Rush - A Farewell To Kings Island - Pictures Eloy - Dawn Fruupp - Future Legends
To me, my list would be this: 1. Renaissance - Scheherezade and Other Stories. I enjoy a lot of medieval books and medieval based folk metal music (Cruachan, etc.) I love the title epic as an classically trained former musician. It's plot is very reminding of stories like Macbeth and Beowulf (with less of the terrific depths in characters, because I got deep into the darkness of Lady Macbeth, being the only person who could channel themselves into a Scorpio influence). Yet, the title track hits that medieval aesthetic. Plus, I believe it was London Symphony Orchestra who provided the orchestra for this. 2. King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King I know this was my first exposure to Prog Rock. 3. Rush - Fly By Night This is only because of Portnoy and Prime Cuts. I only really enjoy By-Tor off of this record because of what was off of Prime Cuts. I do want some more Orchestral Prog recommendations, though. Because it's a middle ground between my experiences with literature and music.
As Iain's Dad, Thick as a Brick is indeed utterly brilliant, but I have forgiven him for the turntable.
Hooray!!
I love that you included Animals on your list!
Well done sir!

Alan Parsons is a band I think would feature on here once I've listened to them a bit more!
Great picks! Loved to see Thick As A Brick getting some love
Always been my favourite JT album!
Totally agree on the War of the Worlds placement. A masterpiece.
I feel like every single British person of a certain age grew up with that album :p
My 4 favorite groups (in chronological order of when I became aware of them)
Pink Floyd
King Crimson
Pixies
Sneaker Pimps

Epitaph is my anthem!!!!
Thank you for such a thoughtful analysis…
Please re-listen to YESSONGS
Best live album EVER!
Yessongs IS amazing!! I'm torn between that and Seconds Out for the best prog live album!

Lamb IS incredible, and definitely a highlight in Genesis' catalogue, but it's not an easy listen for me!
The Lamb is my favorite album. I am also with you on Rush it's always Hemispheres or Permanent Waves, they constantly switch spots at 1 and 2 for me.
Amazing list. Only a teeny bit sad not to see The Leftoverture by Kansas mentioned.
Classic album!! Just not quite up there with my favourites, but nonetheless amazing work!

Gentle Giant - Power And The Glory
Renaissance - Scheherazade and Other Stories
Yes - Relayer
Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick ( with honorable mention to the criminally underrated Roots For Branches)
Rush - A Farewell To Kings
Island - Pictures
Eloy - Dawn
Fruupp - Future Legends
I nearly nearly NEARLY went for Red on my list! What an amazing album ❤️❤️
@@RhymeSignatures i'd even say it's the first Progressive Metal album with those heavy riffs
@@terriblecertainity not gonna disagree with that! One More Red Nightmare is definitely proto prog metal!

That Renaissance album is amazing!! I heard it for the first time a few weeks ago, and wow!
Have you heard of Kingston Wall? Their album "II" is a masterpiece, mixing rock with mythical Indian vibes.
I'm not familiar! But with that description you KNOW I'm gonna check that out!!
If I was to pick the same bands the only changes I would make are Brain Salad Surgery for ELP and Close to the Edge for Yes.
Crack The Sky the debut album
I love that you included Animals on your list!
