  • INSIDER’s Herrine Ro and Alana Yzola travel to Chicago, Illinois to try the best deep dish pizza in the city. They visit Lou Malnati’s, Giordano’s, Gino’s East, and Pequod’s. The two hosts order the most popular specialty deep dish at each location and see how each restaurant makes their pies. The two hosts taste test at each place and ultimately decide which restaurant is the best of the best.

I use a fork/knife for the first half. The ones I ate were a bit too heavy to comfortably hold the whole thing without losing toppings.
Also, by the time I ate half a slice, the cheese is at that just right gooeyness to stretch a bit still, but not enough to have trouble biting through. Fresh, I need the knife to separate a piece off to eat it.

I am from the Chicago area and I do enjoy a deep dish from time to time, Uno's is one of my favorites. With that said, 90% of the time people from the Chicago area order tavern style pizza. The deep dish is more of a touristy thing. Vito & Nick's is amazing.

@FULL DOUBLE Literally every person I grew up with; friends, family, etc, do not order deep dish. I am not saying people don't do it but I guarantee that day to day most Chicagoans are ordering the normal, tavern style, square cut pizzas for delivery.

@FULL DOUBLE My family has always lived in Chicago too, so the whole "5 generations" argument is moot as many of us have long ties to the city. Yet I have never come across anyone whose normal, weekly pizza order is a deep dish. Occasionally? Sure. But you're smoking crack if you think the average Chicago household isn't ordering the thin more often than the deep.

Yeah, I'd agree. Native Chicagoan here, they're all good but I'd pick either Lou Malnati's or Pequod's. What I didn't know until this video was Malnati's and Gino's recipes are derived from Uno's recipe, I think that's a cool fun fact.
Personally though (as a native Chicagoan) I prefer Chicago style thin crust. Thin crispy crust, sharp thin layer of tomato sauce, Italian sausage under the mozzarella top, tavern cut (square grid like our streets). It's easier to share and not as heavy as deep, goes great with beer. It's the thing we order for sports games, "super bowl size, chicago style" is thin crust but like as big as a table.

Lou malnati has the best sausage, both in quantity and flavor; uno is very good and their sheep milk based cheese makes it unique in the best way. Ginos East has quite remarkable tomato sauce though, to the point that I buy it in cans to use as sauce for spaghetti and other dishes that call for it. They are all good and it’s hard to pick the top 1 but unlike other comparisons on here, these all bring something unique to the table and are all impressively different. Chicago deep dish is absolutely undefeated among pizza styles. I can’t recommend it enough. Everything about it. Crust. Cheese. Sauce. And how they traditionally just have sausage as a topping or sometime pepperoni but the best examples are the ones with just the highest quality sausage.

You can ask for a "Sausage Patty" at Lou's. It's one giant sausage layer vs the pieces of sausage. I agree Lou's is the best, but I like to also get Gino's for the cornmeal crust sometimes. Have yet to try Pequod. Giordano's is not on my list of good pizza places. However most of the time Chicagoan's regularly order thin crust. Deep dish is the special occasion pizza.
