Is the BMW Z4 a better budget sports car than the Mazda MX-5?

  • If you're looking for a cheap 2 seater sports car to thrash on the weekends, the obvious choice is the perennial Mazda MX-5. But is it the best choice? For a little extra money you can have a 2-litre BMW Z4. I've taken one for a drive to find out which you're better off with.

I drive a 2006 2.5si z4 and it's great fun. But when comparing budget sportscars it's ludicrous to discount the Mr2. I had a red SW20 rev3 2.0 t-top for years and it was the best car I've ever owned. 174bhp. Roof comes off. Looks like a ferrari. Sounds amazing. Bulletproof reliable because it's a Toyota.
I drove to over 150,000 miles and ragged it mercillesly to it's 7250 redline constantly.
Ultimately the sills rusted away and I had to sell it to someone with the space to take on the project.
It started first time eerytime and it was always a thrilling drive.
The rev3 was the one with the dumbed down suspension so it was less prone to snap oversteer if you treated it like any other than a mid engined car.
It was still a hoot to drive and more fun than anything I've driven since.
It certainly made me a better driver.
I've always been curious about the Mx-5 and what all the fuss was about.
I've never driven a Miata but my current boss has owned them for years. Come the summer we're going to have a swap day and see how each other's car goes.
I'm totally open to being converted but in considering low budget sportscars the Mr2 made me feel a million dollars for years (5+). Amazing car.
    Luv and Peace.
    Edit: Daily drivers. All.

The mk3 mx5 with the 2.0 litre engine puts out about 170 hp . The same as the bmw 2.2 z4. The bmw is a 6 cylinder engine, it costs more to service and is heavier on fuel. The mx5 is basically a Ford the parts are cheaper. It has a Ford engine, Ford suspension, Ford brakes. It’s cheaper to run ,it has the same performance. It’s a no brainer go with the Mazda.

The good thing about the Miatas (even the small block ones with 1.8(nc) and 1.5(nd) engine only for Europe) is that you feel them fast at normal speeds which are not exceeding the b-road speed limits by much. Definitely not for a highway though, Miatas, even the brand new one is rather noisy at over 80 mph we usually do. Stereo is useless, so you have to have a good exhaust instead...:)

Feels pretty nimble to me and I have years in a 174hp MR2.
The suspension is really well sorted out as you'd expect from BMW.
They really are pretty special at making cars.
      I went from the SW20 rev3 to a BMW 320i with 4 less horsepower.
Bottom line is the 320i was quicker and handled better because the suspension gave you the confidence to use it more round a bend.
The MR2 was very exciting but the transition from exciting to catastrophe was very short.
      I spun my MR2 3 times.
      I never spun my 320i
The Z4 has a lot of that chassis balance about it and also has the clever get of out jail free card of Dynamic Skid Protection but with the added fun of allowing a bit of skid.
      The Z4 is a riot.
