You could tell they are so disappointed because the great pacific garbage patch is displayed like a floating island of trash but what you really find is just a shit ton of small pieces of plastic.
I watch a lot of sailing videos and on a few occasions a crew or couple will run into an area that appears as though you could get out of the sailboat and walk on the trash. But most of the videos show the beautiful emerald waters along the Islands and reefs.
I used to work on a Charter Fishing boat on the weekends as I love being way out in the Atlantic Ocean and I've never seen any trash. I will say that the Captain I worked with, new plenty of fishing hot spots, and the customers caught more fish than they needed . In the end they had to put a moratorium on Red Snapper as the species was almost fished out.

What's great about it? The whole 3 part thing is 5 minutes quality material and an hour of reality TV human drama. Most watched the 3rd part literally just to see who will fuck Meredith.

The vocabulary diversity of this documentary is astounding. "Fucking, shit" and so on are the key highlights...
So what, honestly. The phrase 'swearing like a sailor' exists for a reason, and after all, it's just another word we've decided to give some arbitrary meaning to.
I'd be cussing, too, if I was subjected to such a depressing sight.
Considering how important the subject matter is here, this 'documentary' wastes a lot of time dealing with the unimportant issues of the Vice guys. Rather than providing a decent amount of facts it could basically be summarised:
- Being on a boat is VERY tough for young privileged Californians. 1. There's NO land. 2. You have to do BORING SHIT like read books and work out. 3. You can't even have a wank!!
- But sometimes the sea has pretty sunsets and dolphins
- The Garage Island isn't a garbage island (spoiler)
- There's lots of plastic in small bits and we can't do anything about it
- The guy gets the girl (lyk if you cri evry tiem)
- OMG being back on land is like being stoned (Vice presenters are cool like me and do drugz)
Vice should try hiring people who actually care more about the issues they're reporting about than their own 1st world problems. In a documentary of over an hour (definitely could have been shorter) I know next to nothing about when and how this plastic problem built up or how it could be tackled in the future and how an ordinary person might be able to help change the situation. But thankfully this is clearly explained by Vice in the description: 'we're fucked'.

Jvenvell that's what makes it more appealing! Vice wants the most amount of people watching this so this is what they need to do. No kid would watch a boring documentary dude. At least they are making something and they are making it visible for the society, whether it's with shitty content mixed or not. I wouldn't like it with out the making out section just saying. It's a matter of making it appealing to the viewer and the idea is there. Good job!
Jvenvell I agree with both Jvenell and HornyDolphin. All that interpersonal stuff did bore me, but that's what will hold the larger audience's attention, and this issue needs to reach as many as possible on a personal level.

This should have been a 15 minute documentary at most. There was some really interesting information in there, but all of the unnecessary drama from the documentarians that all fancy themselves protagonists made it really hard to get through.

This video just opened my eyes even more. I try to recycle every object I would've put in the trash but now I realize I should even step up more to use less plastic everyday in the first place.
The irony is we dump this shit in the ocean because we want rid of it and can't be arsed to dispose of it properly. It makes its way back into the food chain and we consume it and it causing us untold damage. We may as well eat the coke bottle when we finish it.
I think we all saw what REAPLY happened there at the end. She went along with it because of the IMPLICATION.
I appreciate knowing how many conversations have sparked from this documentary. Thank you all so very much ~ it's up to each one of us now to make real changes in our own lives ~ BANNING PLASTICS and re-sharing so more people can do their part as well.
Getting the impression your pieces are more an exploration of your own insignificant emotions and journeys to experience issues rather than a thorough dissection of the issues themselves. I am really drawn to your topics but they are executed so poorly that I'm always left disappointed.
The reason there was so much 'boring' footage before they showed the actual garbage gyre is to give you a sense as to just how far they had traveled to get there. It saddens me that so many people can view this and coming away with only the emotion of boredom. Here's to instant gratification and an eternal plastic legacy.
Got to agree, I also feel the extra footage helped to entertain the younger crowds as oppose to just showing the horrifying/possibly boring environmental mess we have created.
I don't agree. They probably lost all but the most passionately interested viewers. And their personal stuff is of no interest to me, it wasn't the purpose of the documentary. I'm middle aged and have watched very long videos and films in my life. But this extra stuff should have been edited. Is it relevant? No? Cut it!

Since vice didn’t really touch on any types of solutions, I figured I’d drop some things YOU can do that are easy and mostly free. Use up the stuff you have instead of buying new stuff. Use it up until it’s unable to be used ever again. Bring reusable coffee cups to Starbucks. This will even get you a discount. Reusable water bottle. Seriously. Do I even have to tell you this? Same with bags. Reusable bags. Buy bamboo tooth and hair brushes. Not plastic ones. There’s ways to make your own toothpaste. Avoid foods with plastic packaging or any packaging at all. If you find a co-op store, they usually have a bulk section where you can bring your own containers. MASON JARS ARE LIFE SAVERS. instead of buying new clothes, try to thrift them. I’ve found some absolute gems at thrift shops. Same with furniture or basic household things. THRIFT STORES ARE EVERYTHING. you don’t need a straw. Seriously. You’re not a toddler. Unless you have a medical condition, you probably don’t need a straw. If you do need a straw, there’s stainless steel and bamboo ones. Also, avoid paper towels and tissues. Believe it or not, regular towels and handkerchiefs exist. There’s definitely more we could all be doing. One thing I’ve noticed about the people around me, is they know the consequences. They just don’t care. This saddens me so much.

Great topic. Awesome intentional idea. Outcome: more of a reality T.V. drama than an actual scientific documentary. I love Vice, but I think they messed this one up. People go out to sea often--I certainly have done it enough-- I do not need your experience of the voyage. What I was looking for was a more scientific view of the problem given in the title.
What about some sort of process that takes the plastic, and shreds it into a kind of thin plastic strings. The plastic strings can be lightly coated with a thin urithane, and pressed together to form a consumer product like fancy house siding. I would not think this needs to be a huge expensive process, but rather done onsite at a recycling center in towns across the USA. Who knows, people might go around trying to collect plastics to manufacture plastic house shingles to,sell for profit. This would be a win win.

This was probably my favorite VICE series. I've never seen anyone interpret the claustrophobic boredom that is life at sea into film so well before.

***** First and most importantly, you've got to really ensure yourself by getting a greater education. (Not saying higher education means a better credible person) but being a publicist and journalist, you've got to get college education to really understand how to do it properly. To become a journalist for this problem- you have to gain an education that opens your mind to the gratitude of the problem itself. It's easy to ask these scientist who research this stuff "what's the problem", but its harder to really put that into context on a webpage if you don't know what they're talking about. My advice:
Move to a coastal area: If you live in the U.S, California is your best bet. If you can't move, simply find ways to contact these scientists and call them when they're free to give you information.
Educate yourself: Take classes such as Atomic Theory, Marine Biology, learn alot about Journalism Concentration, Media Law and Ethics, Liberal Arts, and take web design classes. If you do this- your not only being informative, you also have a huge foot in the door for people like the scientists on the field, who are attempting to reveal this to the word. If you where to get a PhD in Marine Biology, you'd be a huge factor to stopping this problem on a political scale- and if you can prove your worth to the world by being a credible source through your research and journalism, you can impact the world.
But you don't need a PhD, what i mean is- you need to really educate yourself on the problem, and become a person that finds solutions that the world can take. If you don't' want to go that far and you simply just want to be a journalist and report on this dilemma, simply take journalism classes and net working that way you know how to articulate yourself in writing and use networking to understand how to bring people to your website.
***** I actually did think i was speaking to sometime in there early twenties lol. No matter though. As i've put into context; the best thing you can do is build your knowledge on web designing, Plastics effects on oceans, and networking. Best advice i can give to someone that has the goals your thinking about is really find some contacts on modern day scientists studying these kinds of things and ask them how you can contribute to making awareness. My advice would be; see if you can get contacts to some of the professors of Montana State University who've made steps towards studying it vastly.
Other than that- i personally don't know if there is a website that really brings all these discoveries together. Would be nice to know if you ever do find it though. It's never to late to start one though.

Least but not least, scientists already have where to publish papers online and activists find a way to keep in touch.

Claudio, if you're Italian, read a book by Nicolò Carmimeo, called "Come è profondo il mare". It covers plastic, extensively, but also mercury and bombs thrown into the sea. Packed with information, and extremely well written as well.
As for the lady who wants to do something, why bash her for it? We can all do our bit. Either by blogging, or starting a community awareness campaign. And, OK, starting another website about it, collecting all the info out there. Why not? The more the better. Maybe she is not qualified to really sort out the useful information, but still, it's still better than nothing. Even sharing this on FB, silly as it might seem, helps build the awareness. It's a drop in the ocean, but every drop counts. Even if one person switches to net cotton shopping bags because of a FB share, it's something. And her neighbours ask why, and she explains, and then somebody else starts talking about it. Don't underestimate the impact of the lone individual.

It just sucks how bad things have really become for the planet, and the list of reasons it won't be fixed is enormous. We destroyed something that statistically doesn't happen too often in our universe. A planet that can sustain life. And we destroyed it in a mere 100 years.
It's okay, humans will eventually kill themselves off (maybe everything else along with them) and another species of assholes will evolve, millions of years from now. Then maybe the cycle will repeat itself again..

Amazing doc. And to those who cry about Thomas and Co saying "fuck" more than often; try living on a small boat on the absolute middle of nowhere for the first time. It affects your behaviour waaaay more than you could think of. They chose to not cut it out to show themselves in such a state, which again really shows you how far away our plastic shit goes. Hell i don't even understand how you are able to care about fucking curse words when the whole point of this doc is to show you our happy ignarant lives on shore (see part1 and 2) in contrast to what we're leaving in the ocean. (part 2 and 3)
Exactly, and the truth of the matter is; everyone NOT in the Ocean on a three week cramped quarters voyage to go and find PLASTIC, curse like the most disgusting sailors you'd ever find on any water voyage. From a sailor's perspective, these guys' journey was admirable. The documentary is enlightening especially for the BPA which most people really do not understand. I like that everyone showed their true colors... the truth about sailing abroad :)
I understand alot of people hate the bits where the people talk about their personal life but honestly I enjoy it. It makes it interesting for people who tend not to like science and thus teaching them a little more =^)

Not all of it but a lot of it. They're also working on a "plastic" made from the outer shell of shrimps. It works just fine for most plastic applications and is biodegradable!
The upside is also that the shells are a waste product from shrimp manufacturing and take very little effort to come by! :)

It's baffling to me that people are so offended by the language rather than the fucking consequences that our carelessness has caused. I'm hugely disappointed that it is the "smartest species" on the planet that's also fucking up the environment. I seemed to have caught on to the message that these people are putting out regardless of their cursing or not.
There should be food and drink dispensaries, and vending machines, Everyone should have one bowl, one bottle/vat. Never throw away anything.
As a college student going in engineering, I think we as a society need to see both ends of the spectrum that engineering and technology provides. While we find ways to benefit ourselves as a society and species, little is truly considered toward the ramifications of the cost.
On the flip side for this particular issue, while the magnitude of the problem is stressed in this documentary, I don't think it's an accurate representation. Yes, they got a lot of plastic and found plastic/life ratios up to 60:1, but all of the plastic that will be found only exists on the surface of the ocean. By this, the true damage and scale should be considered by the volume, making the impact seem much smaller in comparison.
Based on the prior statement and information from the documentary, simple solutions can be started on. Two that come to mind: 1) filtration to the supply (which I assume is already done), 2) stop producing red/orange/yellow plastic (to lessen the amount of ingestion by fish, because as the captain mentioned, they are more enticed to eat the brighter colors).
One thing I'd like to see done (if possible) is vertical column samples. Like drop the sampling equivalent of one of those construction garbage shoots all the way to the bottom, and somehow draw off samples from all levels. Like a core sample.
The implied sex was so weird. There's two episodes of describing the loneliness and boredom and hardships, then half an episode of discouragement about the state of the Earth and society... and then two people awkwardly easing their mental breakdown through sex? Then searching a little you see they are married and they... met on the cruise?
I felt like it was a really strong image - like, the Earth is in danger and we probably can't do anything - and I kind of like that image... but I would like it in fake story, a movie, a novel. We're here talking about the dangers and challenges of ecology, down-to-earth and dark themes, and then suddenly magical love happens due to two weeks of emotional breakdown. I just don't know. It wasn't there to show that there is still hope in the human race or anything. It was just... weird.

So do I and every beach I've been to this summer has had more plastic floating around than seaweed. It's really not that much better here.

This is brilliant, honest and endearing journalism. I have followed Vice for a long time now and these episodes have been a perfect example of exactly why I do.

Brilliant documentary. I really like this in particular because it not only brought across it's points about pollution, but also managed to give an interesting insight in what it's like to live on a ship. Fun as hell to watch, just a shame it's over really.

The fact that always blows me away is just how quickly we did this. We've only been making great masses of 'plastic' for less than 100 years. Basically, only one or two generations.

I think after watching Vice for a while that caution for direct educational purposes is considered anyway, with or without the swearing. And at least the reporter feels like a real person, saying and describing the situation or emotions in his own 'filthy' way.

the point was, if you take ALL of the garbage in the gyre and combine it, it would be the size of texas... but like they said in the video, it is all spread out, and most not even on the surface, and lots of it is microscopic.. so looking for a mass the size of texas wont happen... but do you need to see a giant mass to know that how we handle our waste is wrong?

I found the swearing to be unnecessary and unprofessional as well. I am no prude and probably cuss daily, but if I were shooting a documentary, I would have restrained myself. It made the production seem cheaper and less credible.

I liked this documentary series. I'm doing a project about plastic in the oceans & this was a good intro. Kind of like an entertaining reality show about plastic in the ocean.
I agree with +Jvenvell ; however, it was interesting for anyone who has never been on a boat in the middle of the ocean. Thank you vice for this very important upload. We must become more conscientious of our activities.

A lot of people complaining about the boredom in watching this. I thought it was the perfect way to give the audience the same sense of boredom that comes with being confined to a small boat for days that the team must have had. I was going crazy by the end, I'm sure they the same. Also it served to underline the distance the trash travels to reach such a super-polluted area further giving us the sense of "out of sight, out of mind" that I'm sure was meant as a subconscious trigger.
I wish humans weren't so stupid. This was eye opening. A program like this needs to telecasted on every channel in the world. We need to wake up before it is to late.

She does/did too and you know she is saying that "this map -- blah blah" thing to just have an idle sentence while she thinks about what to do. Bravo, Vice, on this last part, but generally this whole episode! i highly appreciate the topic you have been willing to pursue as one of the very few on this planet (irony). it takes the same freudian defence stages against the guilt and responsibility that is out here for all of us (for that matter I highly recommend everyone to google the fields of ecopsychology and ecopsychoanalysis and see the relation they have to offer) and besides the only rational conclusion of reduction of pollution by reduction of production, austerity in use and behavior, and technological substitutes, it is almost unbearable to understand the fact that only due to the very last century of arrogantly assumed rise none of us is ever getting out of this and we shall fall hard eventually as too many, if not the majority of us will give up trying to atone for this up front......

His constant cursing was so annoying and unprofessional it takes away from the credibility of the project. I especially loved the quotes, "It feels like I'm on srooms", "I just want to get high," and "It feels like I'm on acid." These people need to talk to a PR professional if they want to make a bigger impact.
I agree, also was a bit put off by their lack of vocabulary, it was like um totally so like messed up and junk, oh yeah and fuck it's like oh my god, holy shit, fucking fuck, like wow...
One big thing I believe they didn't measure in the video was the duration of the time they were dragging the net behind the boat. If they were dragging for hours and only got one sample at a time, it wasn't very much. I feel like withholding that information really makes it seem like its not as big of a problem than they claim it is, so they covered it up.
I actually really like the rawness of these docos.... makes it feel like we are right there with them and that's the whole point of it. they aren't trying to make money they are trying to make awareness
