I was a teenager in the 80's and I feel lucky that I was able to see John Hughes movies in the theatre, as a teen. Breakfast Club was his most popular, in that it affected our teenaged culture so much. Simple Mind's
"Don't You (Forget About Me.)" was a huge song. A lot teen boys started wearing John Bender trench coats and untied black boots. - What a great time to grow up.

Crashburn 32 that makes me want to be a teen in the 80s. It’s weird that i always get such nostalgia from the 80s even though i wasn’t born then, i was born in 2000s :/

@crashburn 32 I agree, I saw Breakfast club, Uncle Buck, Planes trains and automobiles in theatres in the 80’s when I was a teen. I graduated in 1987 what a great time to grow up. Ronnie Ray guns was our prez and Phil Collins, Madonna and MJ filled our radio stations

It’s crazy to think that the North Chicago Suburbs is what defined a large part of the 80’s. I’ve lived/worked around here all my life and never really seen the beauty of it until now.

From June 1977 to August 1978 I lived & worked in a private home in Winnetka; Hubbard Woods to be exact. Never would have imagined then that these great movie's would be filmed in & around where I once lived. Absolutely love & miss the North Shore. Thanks for the awesome video.

This guy made so many great movies. I've seen a select few in the theaters. A memorable one was Sixteen Candles. I saw it during the Summer of 1984 when I was 16. I just turned 50 on January 29th by the way, lol. In April of 1985 I was down in St Petersburg Beach Florida visiting family while on spring break from high school. I had the pleasure to meet and speak with John Candy at a filming location (St Petersburg Beach) for the movie Summer Rental. He was extremely kind and sincere; a sincerity that couldn't be faked.

You, sir, have a wonderful family. Your parents must have been great examples to you when you were growing up, having given you experiences that you wish to pass on to your children, and now, thankfully to us, the viewing public. I, for one, really appreciated the John Hughes Tour, as he was an icon of my youth, as I’m sure he was to yours. It’s sad that he’s not around to see just how much his movies were loved by our generation.
Thank you for taking us all on the tour with you, as well as for showing us his final resting place, and for respecting the places and people that own those places where the movies were filmed. As a person that once live in the Chicagoland area, in my very early youth, I have found that every time I visit, or pass through, I have felt the calling to move back. If the economic climate ever improves there, or I happen to win lottery, I’d love to return to my grandmothers old neighborhood of Northbrook, or any of the areas or towns you visited, and look you up. Until such good fortune is bestowed upon me, safe travels, and best wishes !

I'm a big John Hughes fan & think he's an underrated director of comedy-cultural-commentator type dramas (Dramedy's). Chicago's contribution to film is important & I really enjoyed this tour. Seeing his own home & gravesite at the end was particularly interesting. She's Having a Baby is one of his films that's rarely mentioned, but my favourite is Ferris Bueller.

I really enjoyed this video even though I'm a Boomer and did not see any of the movies except "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", which I liked.
I also have a back door story. Years ago my uncle from Florida brought several boxes of citrus for us when he was passing through on his way north. He also left a big box for a friend of his and asked me to take it to his friend's home. So I called the friend to set a time for me to deliver the fruit. He was a prominent member of the community and lived in an exclusive area. When I told him why I was calling, he told me to bring the box of fruit the next day and go to the back door. After I hung up I told my mother what he had said. She called the guy back and told him to come pick up the fruit at our house and be sure to come to the back door. Of course he never came.

I like to go for drives when I have something I need to think through, like making a decision or just working out some issue. I pick an area without much traffic and just drive. My favorite drive is going out towards one of the barrier islands, nice 30 minute stretch one way.
I once read that taking a familiar, relaxing drive without traffic causes your brain to shift into its right-brain mode, which is the more creative side so maybe that's why driving seems to help me think problems through.

Thank you for this..I grew up adoring his films. I know the words to each and every one of his films. In the mid 90”s I worked In a small video rental store, and we were allowed to play current movies on the big screen TV’s hanging from the ceiling, so customers just could hear it playing while browsing. I would play Pretty in Pink every shift, from the start of my shift to the end, each time I worked. My boss finally confronted me and said “ it’s the mid 90’s now, I’m tired of coming in and seeing this movie over and over “. Oh well, I now have a 26 year old daughter who is hooked on John’s films, so I know I did something right.. I also wish John Hughes directed my life. No one tops Jake Ryan in that red Porsche. Still today, I wish someone would move their car and he standing there looking at me and mouthing “ yeah you “ Sigh 😩😩 RIP to the most brilliant filmmaker, writer, director, producer of all time!!! 🙏🙏🙏

I'm familiar with the area being I'm from Libertyville and I'm not shocked by your HVAC story @ 10:30 .. "The help uses the side door"... Yep that's Kenilworth for you... The whole North Shore is probably one of richest areas per sq mile in the United States. My family owns a residential/commercial Audio Video company and the majority of our customers are from the North Shore, and to say some of them are "snooty" or act like you're beneath them would be an understatement, however for every "snooty" person there is always someone who is very nice..
So yea, being from the area I'm familiar with these locations.... As a matter of fact your video made me realize that the Church from Sixteen Candles was the same church we held a memorial for at for a dear fried of my family.. Had no idea until I saw your video.

That's just nonsense. We have just as nice & even much nicer homes in the deep south & don't treat people that way. I live in 3,700 sq ft & we call her "Tara" because she looks like "Gone With The Wind" & our "help"...delivery, maid, gardener, repairmen...come up our circular drive to the front door all the time. I lived approx 11/2 hr from Evanston a long time ago...people in the Midwest are strange & "distant". Maybe those harsh winters make them "cold" hearted. They still eat & crap the same as everyone else. Long live the South! Glad to be back!!!

Great video. Just to correct a couple of things:
    1. John Hughes grew up in Northbrook and attended Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook. Before the city was named Northbrook, it was called Shermerville. That is why he often used the name Shermer, Illinois and where it came from.
    2. The football field from "The Breakfast Club" is the football field from Glenbrook North High School and it still stands today (just around the corner from the theater steps used in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off."
*I attended Glenbrook North High School in the 80s while these movies were being filmed which is how I know these corrections are true. The high school held a rally for him during his filming of FBDO. Also, the cast of TBC sat in the hallways of the school observing students (although we had no idea who they were at the time obviously because "16 Candles" had not come out so even Molly Ringwald was a relative unknown at the time they were visiting.)

One time you should stop in at Superdawg in Chicago. A deleted scene of Sixteen Candles was filmed there where Long Duck Dong drives Sam and his girlfriend to the place on their way home from the dance. Long inspects and plays around with a motorcycle making it go flying through the parking lot and Sam’s friend catches up with her there to inform her that her grandparents showed up to the dance telling embarrassing stories about her.
Apparently the place has been owned by the same family since then.
There is evidence to corroborate this when Long pulls up to Sam’s house and the food tray is at the side of the car.
