Neither she nor her mother *wants* her to be Empress. It's a horrifically cloistered life (Princess Toshi's mother went thru hell-on-earth as the press pressured her to have a male heir. Toshi would experience similar pressure to choose an 'acceptable' husband--an almost impossible task, given her cousin Mako's difficulties). IMO, the dwindling amount of dynastically-acceptable heirs to the Chrysanthemum throne could be taken as a sign that perhaps the whole thing is better off set aside.
TRUST Me she doesn't want it...its highly ceremonial and very rigid role and she won't be free if she become an empress, she will be constantly watched over by people on what she do, what she wear, what she eat, where she goes.....its like being a pet in display.

Dutch monarchy dates back to 1815. The Orange-Nassau's held the title ''stadtholder'' (i.e. Magister Militum) in the Dutch states between the 16th century and 1795, and weren't monarchs, even though they played a comparable role. The title of stadtholder became inheritable in 1747.
IIRC this is more-or-less correct. But there were many Stadholderships; one for each Dutch province (Holland, Gelderland, Frisia, etc.). Many branches of the Nassau family (not just the Oranges) held Stadholderships (such as the Nassau-Dillenburgs); the Orange-Nassaus just happened to hold the highest number/most important Stadholderships at any time. And while not a monarchy, there *were* those in Dutch politics (the Orangists) who wished to make the republic more like a typically monarchy, with the Oranges ofc. being in-charge.

Hello! Dyah from Indonesia here, and currenty residing in Yogyakarta city! I hope in the future you'll make video of Subnational Monarchies in the world! From Indonesia, we have Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X from Sultanate of Yogyakarta, a Special Region of Indonesia. Yes, they still included in Indonesia's sovereignity, but because of Yogyakarta's rich history and culture, almost undefeatable from Portugese, British, VOC/Dutch and Japan colonizations, and once held as a brief capital city of Indonesia instead of Jakarta during the still-fresh freedom of colonization and still-full of revolution era at that time (pasca our Independence Day in August 17th 1945), they were granted their own special government where the Sultan is a Sultan as well as the Forever-Governor of the Special Region instead of 5-year elected governor in other regions and often as one of the Minister in our Democracy Nation's Cabinet.. The monarch was hereditary and a male heir as a heir presumptive, but now, our current Sultan only had 1 wife (instead of several like his predecessors) and only have daughters, so the issue of heirs is still a bit controversial here.. Thank you!
Did you know that Felipe VI, in addition to Spain, is also King of Jerusalem? Despite not having existed as a kingdom since the end of the 13th century, the title of ‘King of Jerusalem’ falls by dynastic inheritance to the Spanish crown.
A few corrections with regards to Spain. Alfonso XIII went into exile when a republic, the 2nd was declared in April 1931 not after the civil war. Franco became head of state in 1939 at the end of the civil war and the monarchy was reestablished upon his death in 1975 with Juan Carlos I, the grandson of Alfonso XIII, who did in fact have sons. Juan Carlos was named heir in 1969 by Franco who disliked Alfonso's heir,, Don Juan de Bourbon who was Juan Carlos's father.. The Bourbon Dynasty was established by Philip V around 1704 when the last Hapsburg King of Spain, Charles II died childless.

The irony is that the remaining 10 European monarchies are among he richest, free and stable countries in the world. Poorer European countries like Greece, Romania and Bulgaria missed the boat by not renewing their monarchies. A constitutional monarch can bring stability and dedication as they carry out the representational functions as head of state. They should stay above politics and be the guarantee that the elected officials behave themselves and operate within the limitations put on them by their constitution and the will of the people.

WE NEED a series or documentary video of the most reigning monarch 72 years in total, Louis XIV of france! I'd love to know his childhood, history, and time being on the throne
There are quite a few in English et en Français (though I can't vouch for their veracity) From what I know, his early reign is considered far and away more successful than his later years (with some remarking that if he had died at some earlier date, he would have unquestionably gone down as France's most successful kings). Alas! His needless antagonism of his rivals (by going to war over the Spanish succession even when several powers such as Britain were willing to support Philip of Anjou's candidacy anyway; by revoking the Edict of Nantes and exile the Huguenots from France & throwing away his grandfather's hard-won gains in religious toleration) did a lot to undermine his reputation, from what I understand.
Excellent all around coverage of this topic! I wish this had been taught in World History classes in American public schools. Many thanks for presenting this to us! I learn so much from you!
This is good to know. The monarchy that is in the news most of the time is the British monarchy. I am aware there are other monarchies. I did not know there were this many of them. Fascinating that all the wives of kings and princes are presented with their titles, but Letizia the queen of Spain is only introduced as a journalist. Otherwise, a flawless video. New Zealand has 2 monarchies: Constitutionally the British Sovereign and the Non-constitutional Maori Monarch, Leader of the Kingitanga. The incumbent being the Seventh, holds the Rank of Paramount Chief, the same rank Queen Elizabeth held in the Republic of Fiji.
@@miryamamar5442 Monarchy means 'rule of one.' Doesn't matter if you're elected or not. The King of Poland was elected. The King of Denmark was elected. Hugh Capet was elected King of the Franks. The Holy Roman Emperor was elected.

Could have done more work on Tonga. Tonga's monarchy is in fact much older. King Siaosi Tupou I is known as the king who modernised Tonga but the country had kings for thousands of years previously
I feel like it’s not correct to say Japan is the oldest, because it’s mythical, not historical. Besides, every country has changed so much through the centuries, that Denmark 1000 years ago would not be the same as today.
Even if you discount the mythical Kojiki-parts, the Japanese monarchy still holds supreme for recorded history. Lindsay, please talk about the Japanese Monarchy in a separate video. The drama going on even now is INSANE
Oh, no, please don't. We are embarrassed by the whole thing and would rather forget about it.
What happened?
Excellent video! Both educational and entertaining. Just in case no one mentioned before, the Commonwealth Realm of Grenada is in the Eastern Caribbean - not Spain. And Barbados did not "leave The Commonwealth". They simply changed their system of government from a monarchy to a republic. Hence, Barbados is no longer a Commonwealth Realm with the British sovereign as Head of State, but rather an independent republic within the Commonwealth of Nations.
The whole Japan situation breaks my heart. Aiko should be Empress!!
@@jeandehuit5385 yeh her mother story was heartbreaking, one time the Queen of Malaysia so very sympathize of her situation that she sent a letter to the empress to offer her help on some new treatment because the Queen of Malaysia was also barren for more than 10 years, but after her treatment she got 5 children. But at that time she refused it maybe because she's already getting too old.
@@wewenang5167 What wow, I'm a Malaysian and never heard this story before. That's so cool and sad at the same time....
@@wewenang5167 Wow, that’s very sad.
@@jeandehuit5385 how do you have time to respond to all comments with that many words

Yeah! I ❤️ this channel.
This is the best video by far.
This channel is EVERYTHING
You did a phenomenal job on this video. I learned so much! Thank you for all of the hard work and care that you put into these videos. I hope you can one day do a video on the founding pirate queen of Cambodia. That sounds like a very interesting story.
Great video as always. One editing mistake I noticed is that when you mentioned the country of Grenada, the map went to the city Granada, Spain
The way you pronounce those names is amazing. I wouldn't even try to pronounce those names you truly are a blessed woman. Jesus loves you and thanks you for all of your hard work. You do excellent Work
Oh wonderful, this has made my evening by far! 👍🏻
this was such an awesome, comprehensive overview. ur sponsor clips always come off such interesting points and segues. loves it. omg have u ever thought of doing a video on Americas Dynasties, there used to be this show back in the day called Americas Castles..loved the peeks into those grand homes. The Americas are two, full continents with lots of dynastic activity, some even claim descendancy from Tlatoani Moctezuma II.
fun fact: "Bin" is actually Arabic for son. so for example Emir Tamim bin Hamad is, in English Emir Tamim son of Hamad. "Bin" is "Ben" in hebrew. "Bat" (bah-t) means daughter in hebrew and "bint" (ben-to) in Arabic
This is amazing! I love learning about the world's history, including the governments of the world! Learning the monarchies of the world have been really fascinating! Thank you for sharing this! 👑

If you’re planning to make an update, the most recent monarch by the time this was written is now Sheikh Muhammad ibn Zayed Al Nathan, President of the UAE who ascended the throne last month in May 13 2022.
The Most Recently Monarch Is Now Charles III Who Ascended To The Throne On September 10th 2022 Following The Death Of Queen Elizabeth II Who Were Two Days Ago.

Thank you!
A succession drama, that will be a long problem that need a cool mind to deal with.
Did you know that Felipe VI, in addition to Spain, is also King of Jerusalem?
Despite not having existed as a kingdom since the end of the 13th century, the title of ‘King of Jerusalem’ falls by dynastic inheritance to the Spanish crown.
imperial Austria claimed the same rulership.
The Bourbon Dynasty was established by Philip V around 1704 when the last Hapsburg King of Spain, Charles II died childless.

dont worry about pronunciation. its not a big deal. its understandable for non language speaker to not pronounce it not like a local speaker.
Love you! It would be great if you would do a video about Traditional African and Indian monarchs! I’ve gotten really into expanding my knowledge of history from my Eurocentric education!

Another insightful video. Absolutely love your work!!
I am surprised that the Zulu monarchy didn't make the list 😅, despite the famous Shaka Zulu it's still very much active.
And thank you for educating us 🙃
Subnational
Yes! Come on, they owe us a video about the Zulu monarchy, hopefully with pics of Henry Cele playing Shaka because DAMN that man was fine!
Cause this is only National level monarchy not traditional level monarchy.
It has nothing to do with famousness, and most people do not know anything about zulu monarchy. Fyi most people only know British monarchy, the Pope, Spanish monarchy, Al-Saud dynasty, and Hashemite dynasty, all of these monarch is an national monarchy not traditional monarchy
Thank you for the extensive research, enjoyed every bit of this video and has thus subscribed.
Regarding Spain, I highly doubt Granada considers queen Elisabeth its queen. Maybe you got it confused with Gibraltar 🤗
A little error here 😂 she is referring to the Caribbean country of Grenada 🇬🇩 which Queen Elizabeth is the Head of State for, but the map showed the Spanish city of Granada 🇪🇸 😂
I like that you talk about other countries because I get to see so much more than just Europe or specifically britian
Thank you so much for your series. I had no idea there were still do many that still functioning. Your work is fabulous!
Lindsay, how did you keep a straight face when giving the net worth of these monarchs? That's true professionalism.
I agree. A side-eye or worse is called for, Thurston.
What about Countries like Germany,Austria and France
Greece monarchy should be restored and whole Anatolia return to Greece hands. One day it will happened.
You did amazing with the pronunciations!!!
i laughed so hard, malaysia was called Malaya, not meilei LOL, we were also conquered by japan during the horrific occupation, not just the dutch, brits n Portuguese. the rest of the infos are very well informed, i'm very happy to see it.
Ah, suddenly I forgot that WWII was a thing.
Fun fact:
Norodom Sihanouk once held every top positions in Cambodia. He was once a prince, then became king, then abdicated in favor of his father and became prime minister. Then he was removed from power and after 18 years of the American backed government, followed by the Khmer Rouge and followed by the Vietnamese occupation. He then became President of Cambodia for a short while before it transitioned back into a monarchy and he became king again.
Must be a mess of a country after the Khmer Rouge
Very informative overall view! Thank you for sharing!
Beautiful, Noble, and Upliftingly Informative!
I'd like to see a video about the Zulu monarchy. There have been some scandals recently with people fighting over the succession after King Goodwill Zwelithini died. Also, you'd get to talk about Shaka, who was a military genius by all accounts, even if he went a bit nuts over time. (And you'd hopefully get to use pics of Henry Cele, who played him in the mini-series in the '80s.)
That will be a traditional monarchy. I think the video will be several part since there are lots of subnational monarchy.
Thank you Lindsay!💕
I love your work. These are things I never would have know except for the history you cover. Thanks for covering all these subjects you cover.
WE NEED a series or documentary video of the most reigning monarch 72 years in total, Louis XIV of france! I'd love to know his childhood, history, and time being on the throne
There are quite a few in English et en Français (though I can't vouch for their veracity)
From what I know, his early reign is considered far and away more successful than his later years (with some remarking that if he had died at some earlier date, he would have unquestionably gone down as France's most successful kings).

Great video. You did an amazing job!
This is good to know. The monarchy that is in the news most of the time is the British monarchy. I am aware there are other monarchies. I did not know there were this many of them. I did not know the pope was considered a monarch. It is good to get all the facts in order. Lindsay's videos are factual and fun to learn from.
Fascinating that all the wives of kings and princes are presented with their titles, but Letizia the queen of Spain is only introduced as a journalist. Otherwise, a flawless video. However, I would be very interested to find out the sources for the list of "Traditional Monarchies", as I find it quite fascinating that the Republic of Panama qualifies as one.
this is masterpiece, good job!
Would love to see a video on the subnational and traditional monarchies at some point! Keep up the great work :)
I wouldn't, my good woman.
@DavidJohnRedwood Why? Enlighten the world?
Love that the Pope being included
Julius II would approve. Most of the Popes of his time acted more like Princes than Bishops
Technically he is NOT king. The Pope is elected.
@@miryamamar5442 Monarchy means 'rule of one.' Doesn't matter if you're elected or not. The King of Poland was elected. The King of Denmark was elected. Hugh Capet was elected King of the Franks. The Holy Roman Emperor was elected.

Items to note:
Sweden: the current Swedish Royal line descends from French Marshal Jean Bernadotte (Charles XIV John of Sweden, IIIrd of Norway) since 1818
UK: the crown of the combined three kingdoms dates from 1707, though an unbroken biological lineage does run directly from the original English monarchy.
And also from the ancient Scottish monarchy

Could have done more work on Tonga. Tonga's monarchy is in fact much older. King Siaosi Tupou I is known as the king who modernised Tonga but the country had kings for thousands of years previously
Excellent explanation
I feel like it’s not correct to say Japan is the oldest, because it’s mythical, not historical. Besides, every country has changed so much through the centuries, that Denmark 1000 years ago would not be the same as today.
Even if you discount the mythical Kojiki-parts, the Japanese monarchy still holds supreme for recorded history. The 1st 'historically verifiable' Emperor, Emperor Kinmei, predates the founder of any other recorded dynasty (European or otherwise) & is the male-line ancestor of the present Imperial family.
@@jeandehuit5385 You’re right! But I think it is important to distinguish between what is SAHIH (verifiable) and what is just stories.
@@princekrazie Oh yes! The stories are still entertaining and/or useful, insomuch as they tell us about ancient Japanese court culture.
But you're right; as accurate history, Kojiki/Nihongi material (& the subsequent imperial propaganda based on those texts) are not particularly convincing documents!
@@jeandehuit5385 I'm from China, so I used to 100% believe in Ancient Chinese stories... It's reall cringe how I had this mindset of superiority, but now I am super skeptical of history and strictly differentiate between confirmed, unconfirmed, and known lies.
Yep, i remember reading about a building in Japan that was from 6 th century, but apparently it had burned down several times in history and it was actually less than 200 years old, it is very common in Asia to exaggerate how old things are.
