Let me first say great video! I have a Dodge Ram 4x4 and the dealership changed the wheel barrings over a two years back. They didn’t put the cv axle back in correctly after the wheel barring replacement causing the axle to wobble and now fluid leakage. Some of the spline teeth are worn from the front differential as well. No ONE could figure what the issue was. Dodge themselves said oh you need a new torque converter! I was like yeah right. Hi, I have hamming/vibrating noise coming from passenger side, when I'm sitting in driver seat. It sounds like something is spinning in uneven way. Zero up to 100 km/h nothing. It starts at 100 km/h, peaks at 110 km/h and disappears at 130 km/h. That sound is definitely connected only to car speed and not to engine rpms. Its louder when pressing gas pedal/accelerating, but it does not disappear completely when not accelerating. It’s not engine, because that sound is same when in neutral or any other gear. It’s not unbalanced tire or wheel. I tried many different wheels. Ball joints are perfectly firm. Sound does not change when braking. There is no play in wheel in any direction. I've already changed both sides bearings and inner transmission side axle homokinetic joint since I found this joint could cause this sound. No rubber boots were damaged. All looking good as new. I used high quality replacement, and nothing helped. Axle itself looks perfectly fine. I also tried clicking test when turning full left, full right and accelerating. Nothing, there is no clicking sound. Anyway, this sound started just like that 4 month ago and does not get better or worse. Still the same. I didn’t hit pothole or anything like that. Now I plan to change outer wheel side homokinetic joint, but I don’t believe it will fix it. I will be glad for any ideas and suggestions. Thank you
Pls check your outer drive Axel for uneven Motion and also don't forget to check vibration in your Car caliper, if it's there the bad outer axel joint are bent.
@@yusrashahnawaz6819 I have already eliminated most of the sound. I have changed all four joins on both axels and inflated properly tires. Now the sound is stil there, but it is very quiet. If I was not aware of that I would not notice it.
You did a wonderful job with this video. Well spoken. I appreciate it very much! My Mazda6 V6 is having similar problem from the passenger side. I changed the cv axles on both sides. I get vibrations when turning left, it feels like the front right wheel is skipping the road almost. There's play on the inner joint where it connects to the intermediate shaft. The intermediate shaft bushing is also having a little play as well.
This is the best , I don’t know anything about suspension I’ve been watching TH-cam videos left and right about the cv axles going in and out and no one talks about that being a normal thing or not and you just solved that for me 10/10
Thanks For this Video, I Have A Lexus Brand New Suspension and I Gave up on it Until Now.. So it has to be the cv axle, Its Doing Everything you spoken about;;
Thank you so much, very helpful video. This is exactly what I’ve been experiencing, this wheel hop and I’m pretty sure it’s tied to the axle but I wasn’t sure and kept thinking it’s the strut,
I have a 2016 Volkswagen GTI. Its tuned and makes about 400HP and I started to hear some noise from the front drivers side when I accelerate. I think the issue started happening when I launched the car and I was getting some wheel hop. I fixed the wheel hop issue with upgraded bushings and motor mounts but the clicking noise was still there. I went under the car and started pulling on the axel and I could hear it moving ever so slightly. Tried the same on the passenger side and it has no play what so ever. I'm thinking this is my issue. Thanks for the video!
Thanks this should help. I was moving my Axle In and out and it seems like a knocking noise when it hits the transmission. Not sure if it should be doing that! Also a up and down like you mentioned makes a noise so could be bad but the boots are fine.
Ok, Grandma hit a concrete barrier on the passenger side. a couple of years ago. About the same time I noticed a vibration at higher speeds-I thought it was the older tires. Slight vibration continued after new tires. Recently the starter went out and I noticed the passenger side CV looked wet and also the part that extends to the differential. I am wondering if the impact had something to do with that the joint and the leak. Pretty sure I will need a new seal as well. Thank you for pointing out the vibration. It had stumped me.
I have same issue and I can hear cluck noise driving or turning , I was looking for weeks and I found the cv axle is loose like yours but mine is truck 4x4
I bought a used suv. It was jerking when stopped and accelerating into gear. I thought it was the transmission til my axle broke off while I was driving on the highway. Got it fixed and the jerking stopped. I heard a noise but thought it was a rotor. That noise is now gone as well
I'm overjoyed by the response to this video. I hope it has helped you. Here is a video of me stating my gratitude: th-cam.com/video/dqUU-b-d6pM/w-d-xo.html
Inner CV axles are the "tri-pot" type containing three channels and allow some inward and outward (axial) movement along those channels. They cause problems when the driven side of the channel gets overly pitted or in worse cases gets a deep divot in one spot in all 3 channels. That's where the shaft can get out of balance under load. Unfortunately, that spot cannot be tested in the manner shown in this video if you jack the car up because the inner joint will be in a unnatural position. Test as shown but only with the car fully settled on all 4 wheels. That's when you want to feel for the dead spots which will cause the excess radial and lateral movement.
Thx for your information . No one has stated the movement between the body & the shaft . I am having a hell of a time trying to determine which side is the problem .
Bought a used 2018 tundra , put knew tires, got used rims and had them check , no issue when tk 6 different tire shops to get rebalanced. I still feel the “play/ hop/ vibration) at 55mph+
Great video I been hearing clunking noises and I check my axles since I was the one changing them and I saw that they move but now I would be able to tell if they actually move move
Thank you for the video and for clearing the IN an Out movement. Did you have any 3 and 9 o'clock play when you shake your wheel? Usually it is a tie rod but can it be also CV axle?. I disconnected the 32mm from the hub and still have the 3-9 wheel play. Changed both tie rods with the same results. I will check the horizontal play. I do hear clunks when turning though. Thanks again for the video.
I did not have any 3 & 9 o’clock play in my steering. It sounds like your issue could possibly be inside your steering rack or the U joint on the steering column.
My truck makes a shudder noise going over bumps in the road. I have replaced struts and sway bar links. The cv boot has a tear in it and grease in that area. I don't hear the clicking noise but def feel the shudder when going over bumps! Could this be the cv axle? At high speeds I don't hear anything. Just at slow speeds. Thanks in advance!
@SpiritdDrivr hear video!! But question for you how did you manage to check the cv axle? Was it making noise or is it because the steering wheel was vibrating as speed increases? Thanks in advance
Great video, but no mention of what happens to the steering wheel hop and vibration when you turn hard at high speed. My Ram does that. Worst at 60-70 mph... louder turning left, and almost disappears turning right. Is that the right inner CV joint? Bearings are fine- new.
Same problem im having with my Daewoo but no one has outcome video, drivers side has flop on inner but replacing everything. Both cv's, lower control arms, wheel bearings, just from age, only 63k miles but right side underneath looks like it met a ditch once in its life. But looks like this will solve it.
see im right where you are at I replaced everything else every bushing except the axles and i was moving them earlier today like that seems like too much movement. Got 2 in the box ready to be put in already. haha
I have checked in my i20. There is little play/movement horizontally when the axle is moved IN and OUT. However, there is no play or movement in UP and DOWN direction. So that IN and OUT play is Normal?
Great isolation tactics! You hear a noise..... Day to day you wonder is it getting louder, or is it something else? I safely put the front end up to try and check exactly this among other possibilities recently. It is still in the air! It is hard to describe how the noise started. It was most noticeable at lowest speeds first thing in the morning. But as soon as the parts had been moving long enough (maybe (relubricated) is was not so distinct. At high speeds a kind of WW2 Bomber sound started up resonating inside though. That's the noise it seems so hard to judge day to day. Is it really getting louder? Or is it just me? But just lately there is this new sort of clicking noise at low speeds well after any cold start. Reading comments, and the evidence from doing these steps has pretty much determined the culprit I hope. Question: Do outer cv joints also click as they begin to fail? Other youtubers give take apart demonstrations and the design is very different. Makes sense to me each design would make sort of distinct noises as it falls to ruin. Only one joint on the inner passenger side has this wiggle in the movement when isolated. But I also found play the the outer tie rod end. So that explains that wobble I have started noticing suddenly. Until checking I had no idea. I thought it might be the same thing. Now the question is how long before the inner cv joint fails and can I get it repaired before that happens? Tie rod end today if all goes well!
Did replacing that axle fix your issue? Having same issue and same play in my prelude. Brand new parts store axle but I hear it's not uncommon to get bad axles out of the box from parts stores.
Yes replacing the axle did fix the issue. I had bought a brand new axle from Autozone but it made the problem worse. I ended up buying a set of axles from Drive Shaft Shop. I ended up swapping both axles and the problem went away.
@@COU51N.Kyle. damn, yeah I called dss and he said I need an oem core, which I don't have. May have to dig around in salvage yards looking for an oem core. :/
@@phemmyo5146 Hope there is no text message misunderstaning here. My question was: can the inner cv axle make the same noises as those components I highlighted. I have the same knocking issue and I have changed all the components I mentioned except the inner cv joint which is loose like spirtddrivr. Any helpful comments would be welcomed😌
Do you do this while the car is warm or cold? I did it immediately after driving it and had some movement and clicking side to side but after I let it sit overnight... no movement at all.
Honestly I do not know. I didn’t drive this car much once the problem occurred. I probably put less than 500 miles on it. The symptoms didn’t get any worse during those 500 miles. Complete axle failure would leave you stranded but I can’t say for sure how long it would take for that to happen.
Glad that I was found your video. I have same problem in my Chevy Spin. So, the problem is only inner joint right? Is there any other possible problem the inner joint bearing that located in the gearbox?
Yes, my problems were only caused by the inner joint. It is possible that the gearbox could cause these symptoms but I don’t have experience with that.
Hai, I have Honda City 2014(UAE). Sometimes make a sound. For example, sometimes the accelerator pressing time (is 0-5km), and sometimes max 40km running time I release the accelerator that time(max. continuously 4 tik tik tik tik sound) (Turning time no sound.) I went to the garage, they check, and they don't find issues. Shoke no issue. Right side axle boot inner & outer before I change. What is the issue?
Hello i’m pretty sure my axels are bad on my 04 element. Did you have any clicking and popping while driving? Mine doesnt make any noise but the vibration is getting worse. Just curious because everyone says you should have some clicking and popping and i have none.
I didn’t have any clicking or popping. Clicking and popping is a sign that the outer joint on the axle is bad. Vibration on acceleration is the sign that the inner joint on the axle could be bad.
Hello thank you for the wonderful video, my Toyota corolla does not vibrate or produce popping sounds but on take off there is a nocking sound where the drive shaft is. Recently we replaced torn cv boots but the inner boot where there is this nocking is now in two pieces again and am wondering if it could be a bad inner cv
Have some kind of clunk/pop noise when I turn lock-to-lock when im parked or when I put the car in reverse, accelerate from a standstill. No wheel hopping feeling or anything so im not sure if this is the passenger side inner axle joint. 190k on both axles, new rack & pinion (including tie-rods and swaybar endlinks), lower control arm, and lower ball joints. Ive posted all over the place from Reddit to web forums and have an appointment with the auto shop on the 12th (only available one). Did record a video which I cannot recreate the sound when the front end is lifted in the air, only when pressure is applied. Link - th-cam.com/video/RCX5GuyPjwQ/w-d-xo.html ....cv? Front and rear motor mounts are no more than 2 years old, passenger side and transmission mounts (TSX) arent new. If it makes clunk/popping noises when at a stand still and turning left to right (steering wheel position doesnt matter and it happens only a couple times) I cant think of what else i didnt already cover that could be the culprit other than CV.
I agree, I think it is your cv. It’s making a lot of noise when you’re moving it in your video. I can’t say for certain of course but you’ve done a lot of diagnosing yourself and I think the shop will agree with you as well. Let me know how it goes on the 12th. From my research, it sounds like your symptoms are those of a bad outer joint on the cv axle. One test you can do is to drive in a circle with the steering at full lock. A bad outer joint will click or make noise while it’s driving in the circle.
So ive replaced my driver side half shaft last year. Get wheel vibration at around 75 mph. And when driving slow and turning get a knocking/clinking clicks every now and then. I replaced the front engine mount already about to do the trans and rear motor mount as well. But i just did this check. Didng even hold the inner cv. Put it on ramps set the parking brake and wiggle the passenger with no play whatsoever. Go to the drivers side and it has a TON of play. Autozone Junk!
YES!! The vibration is so bad I Thought my lugnuts had been removed and wheel was coming off or my struts were unbolted!! Idk its horrible. Do you think it could be my suspension? If I Jack the car up my front tires extend way too far before they come off the ground but idk. I will check the axle like you did and see if its that. I wish you were my neighbor or I was your sister Lol cuz I was raised with mechanics and I always work on my cars but I'm not afraid to admit when I need a mans help and today is the day Lol.
If the vibration is constant and increases with speed, then I would say it’s not your suspension. Hard to say though. Another cause of vibration could be unbalanced tires, bent wheel, or the tire surface has become uneven. I once had a tire that had a large bulge on the tread. It vibrated badly. I wish you the best of luck and I wish I could help you out in person too. Hang in there and let me know what you find.
Hey man how you doing when I start driving it my car when the goes to 30 to 40 mph when I accelerating Star vibraing do you think I have a bad axles. I watch your video so I'm going to do the same thing in my car hopefully I found the problem thanks man
It could be your axles but it could also be unbalanced tires or a bent rim that is causing the vibration. Hopefully the axle joint test will give you some answers. Let me know what you find
You don’t hear no sound coming from it like a metal with metal? Cause i got a 2007 ford fusion and i replaced control arms, sway bar links, tie rods and struts and the only thing left its the cv axle and watching the video now i thing its the inner joint bad cause i got a wear noise coming from passengers side
On me VW Golf 5 SDI with 730k km, I found the following during a 4 tire replacement: left axle - moves inwards and outwards, small ticking when it does full in or full out - you say its normal ? right axle - when I spin it by hand to front of car and back and forth quite rapidly, slight ticking or knocking sound. its ever so sligthly. (I didn't put pressure on that part like u did, I just grabbed the outer shaft and man handled it) I checked out the axles because even after 4 new tires and alignment car pulls right, and today for the first time I started hearing audible vibration in right turns on the highway at 100+ km/h if wheel is centered or slightly to the left (when I correct the steering angle manually.. ) no vibration heard. Ideas ?
Ticking/knocking when full in or out is usually a sign that the outer joint of the axle is worn out. It sounds like your axles are worn out and causing the vibration and steering pull. It would make sense that your axles are worn if they are the originals with 730k km on them. I can’t say for sure that it’s the axles causing your problems but that is what it sounds like to me. Best of luck and let me know what you find out.
@@COU51N.Kyle. thanks for replying! Question is, is it both axles that are bad or just one side that I can get away with, by full in and out noise you mean what I described from the left (driver) side ?
I have heard that a common STi issue is worn out tires that cause the car to pull left on acceleration and pull to the right on deceleration. I would try rotating the tires to see if the issue is still there. I'm not sure what would cause this. Maybe it has something to do with the STi specific DCCD system and how it puts power down. The rattle on bumpy roads sounds like a suspension issue to me. Worn out shocks can rattle. Good Luck! let me know what you find.
@@chekacheka12 did you ever have your tires balanced? And does it do it all the time or have you found a certain time when the vibration does not happen at 70mph?
My 2003 Malibu shakes like a pup pooping peach pits betewen 45 -52 and it's more of a forward to back shake -- like something "grabs" at one point or something. and does it also when going downhill and braking.. IDEAS??
That sounds tricky to diagnose. Initially I was thinking it was worn shocks/struts causing your car to undulate when the suspension is under load like when going downhill or braking but the “grabbing” has me stumped. I wish I could help more. I don’t have experience working on a car with those symptoms. I wish you the best of luck and hope you’ll let me know what the problem is when you find out. I’m very curious now.
@@COU51N.Kyle. I've had the bearings replaced- the rotors are new- and brakes are all new-- so it's still doing it-- which is now kind of making me think the axle itself may have a bad spot or something.
I have a question. I had a bad axle that was causing shaking at highway speeds I got them replace at a shop with new aftermarket axles and it fixed my issue. But right after they were replaced I now have a vibration at 25mph only that was not there before. If I accelerate quickly I don't even feel it. I believe aftermarket axle is causing this. But is it ok to drive with it this way ? I have been for 3 months now and it has not gotten worse or anything.
I’m in the same boat as you man. Just replaced my passenger axle because of a torn boot on the inner CV joint. The axle that was replaced was OEM. I couldn’t get a OEM replacement because Honda has a national back order on parts. Anyways, I picked up an aftermarket axle from Autozone (Duralast Gold) and installed it. Now I’m getting vibrations at low RPMs 20-30mph. I’ve watched so many videos and read so many threads and I’m beginning to believe it could just be that it is the aftermarket brand like everyone else say.
@GhadSpeed yeah a few others have said it will be fine I have been driving with my low speed vibration since January and seems to be the exact same not worse at all. Guess I will just live with it
O have the same Honda EF , dual carb on my case... E ir does the same shaking. At 90kmh - 120kmh worst. I Change everything and nothing help. Time to Change the axle and see...
Would it ever make a grinding sound, even when coasting downhill in neutral? I have grinding but i feel it's the front differential (awd). Hopefully it's the cv instead because there is clicking when i turn sharp.
I don’t believe so. Although bad axles can be felt through the steering wheel, I don’t think they would have any effect on the power steering system itself.
What kind of car? Power steering leak could be power steering hoses being cracked or not tight enough. I replaced my rack & pinion last year but developed a leak in the lines and discovered it to be one of the clamps was loose due to age. Where is the leak coming from?

My Mazda6 V6 is having similar problem from the passenger side. I changed the cv axles on both sides. I get vibrations when turning left, it feels like the front right wheel is skipping the road almost. There's play on the inner joint where it connects to the intermediate shaft. The intermediate shaft bushing is also having a little play as well.
Thank you! I hope you are able to sort out your problems with ease
This is the best , I don’t know anything about suspension I’ve been watching TH-cam videos left and right about the cv axles going in and out and no one talks about that being a normal thing or not and you just solved that for me 10/10

Mine has a lot of play. Thanks for the tips, i have exactly all the same symptoms
Straightforward to the point,thanks buddy!!!🎉
I have same issue and I can hear cluck noise driving or turning , I was looking for weeks and I found the cv axle is loose like yours but mine is truck 4x4
I bought a used suv. It was jerking when stopped and accelerating into gear. I thought it was the transmission til my axle broke off while I was driving on the highway. Got it fixed and the jerking stopped. I heard a noise but thought it was a rotor. That noise is now gone as well
Dang that must have been kinda crazy when the axle broke. Glad to hear you were able to get it fixed.
thanks for the quick and to the point info
Is there a video about this specifically?
Bro impossible to check that way weight of the car u will not be able to move around anything
@@kings1048 Ummm. Nope. If you can't feel any play then there all good.
Thx for your information . No one has stated the movement between the body & the shaft . I am having a hell of a time trying to determine which side is the problem .
How about a change of the wheel hop and vibration at higher speeds when you turn the steering wheel side to side?

Dude, thanks. Did you get any clunking? I have a clunking in the rear and nothing seems amiss other than I get rotational play
And did you ever fix the issue? If yes, what was the problem?
Have more confidence in yourself awesome video very well explained you got my subscribe you made it simple we need more videos like these

Great video, but no mention of what happens to the steering wheel hop and vibration when you turn hard at high speed. My Ram does that. Worst at 60-70 mph... louder turning left, and almost disappears turning right. Is that the right inner CV joint? Bearings are fine- new.
When checking for play should the tire be off the ground or in the air
either is fine
Same problem im having with my Daewoo but no one has outcome video, drivers side has flop on inner but replacing everything. Both cv's, lower control arms, wheel bearings, just from age, only 63k miles but right side underneath looks like it met a ditch once in its life. But looks like this will solve it.
Nice video very helpful! Can I put my car on jack stands and turn into 5th gear and see how it behaves?
I have same issues. It feels wheel wobbling (same frequency as wheel turning frequencies).. im gonna check the cv joints..
Thanks for the hands on demo
QS: When testing for a Bad CV axle, when the car is up on a lift should the tires be off the car? Or would this make a difference?
The wheels don’t have to be off, but the weight of the wheel will make the axle more difficult to move.
see im right where you are at I replaced everything else every bushing except the axles and i was moving them earlier today like that seems like too much movement. Got 2 in the box ready to be put in already. haha
I have checked in my i20.
There is little play/movement horizontally when the axle is moved IN and OUT.
However, there is no play or movement in UP and DOWN direction.
So that IN and OUT play is Normal?
I’ve been told that is normal yes

Honestly I do not know. I didn’t drive this car much once the problem occurred. I probably put less than 500 miles on it. The symptoms didn’t get any worse during those 500 miles. Complete axle failure would leave you stranded but I can’t say for sure how long it would take for that to happen.
The little bit of play on the inside part (that attaches to the transmission) is okay eh?
Glad that I was found your video. I have same problem in my Chevy Spin. So, the problem is only inner joint right? Is there any other possible problem the inner joint bearing that located in the gearbox?
Yes, my problems were only caused by the inner joint.
It is possible that the gearbox could cause these symptoms but I don’t have experience with that.
@@COU51N.Kyle. what is possibly part in the gearbox that caused same symptoms like your problems?

How did it go on the 12th??
Did replacing the cv axle fix your steering wheel vibration
Yes it did
So ive replaced my driver side half shaft last year.
Sorry to hear that. I’ve had bad luck with autozone axles too 😖
Hang in there and let me know what you find.
the fixed length of the longer shaft shouldnt have any up and down play in the bearing like that (ideally)
Makes perfect sense 👍🏻
Hey man how you doing when I start driving it my car when the goes to 30 to 40 mph when I accelerating Star vibraing do you think I have a bad axles. I watch your video so I'm going to do the same thing in my car hopefully I found the problem thanks man
It could be your axles but it could also be unbalanced tires or a bent rim that is causing the vibration.
Hopefully the axle joint test will give you some answers. Let me know what you find
1989 cavalier Z24 73 mph vibration, the passenger cv moves up and down but the shaft is stationary, the axles are two years old,is it the axel?
You don’t hear no sound coming from it like a metal with metal? Cause i got a 2007 ford fusion and i replaced control arms, sway bar links, tie rods and struts and the only thing left its the cv axle and watching the video now i thing its the inner joint bad cause i got a wear noise coming from passengers side
On me VW Golf 5 SDI with 730k km, I found the following during a 4 tire replacement:
left axle - moves inwards and outwards, small ticking when it does full in or full out - you say its normal ?
right axle - when I spin it by hand to front of car and back and forth quite rapidly, slight ticking or knocking sound. its ever so sligthly. (I didn't put pressure on that part like u did, I just grabbed the outer shaft and man handled it)
I checked out the axles because even after 4 new tires and alignment car pulls right, and today for the first time I started hearing audible vibration in right turns on the highway at 100+ km/h
if wheel is centered or slightly to the left (when I correct the steering angle manually.. ) no vibration heard.
I have a 08 sti awd!!! I accelerate car pulls to the left, let go the gas pulls to the right, any advice? Rattle on bumpy roads

Nice tight joint!
I can’t say for sure but I think you’ll be alright.
Guess I will just live with it
Is this an aftermarket cv axle? how many months have you used it?
Yes this is an aftermarket axle. It came with the motor swap I bought. I used it for 4 years but it could be older than that.
O have the same Honda EF , dual carb on my case... E ir does the same shaking. At 90kmh - 120kmh worst. I Change everything and nothing help. Time to Change the axle and see...
So my steering wheel doesnt wiggle, but i hear/feel a clicking when I turn the wheel while at a slow speed (such as getting ready to turn)
I had a 2009 Chevy Impala and it was shaking in a horizontal ellipse when I stepped on the gas.
Would it ever make a grinding sound, even when coasting downhill in neutral? I have grinding but i feel it's the front differential (awd). Hopefully it's the cv instead because there is clicking when i turn sharp.
No I never heard a grinding. Clicking when turning sharp is usually cv axle
Grinding is normally a bad wheel hub bearing.😊

My CV axle would not move in and out. Is that bad?
Can you hear noise from that when the car hits bumps? Currently doing an HHR but i notice when i put the new axles it it still has play
I didn’t hear any noises when hit bumps
both my axels look terrible, could that be causing a power steering leak as well? bc thats another issue my car is having
Where is the leak coming from?
is it safety concern if there is a play?
I can’t say for certain. I’ve never seen one have catastrophic failure
