This place will forever be dear to me. I’ve spent every summer in this house of splendor. It was built in 1910 by my great-great grandmother. The filming of “The Whales of August” brought a huge excitement to all the island residents. It was a joy and a pleasure to get to know the cast and crew. My grandfather even had a small part in the movie as “Old Mr. Randall.”
I get such a feeling of melancholia watching this masterpiece of a film - perhaps because it is a constant reminder of the temporariness of life and living. I was 30 when this came out, I just passed my 60th 2 months ago. What an incredible swan song for these great actors. Time passes without fail, and so will everything we know.
The music at the beginning of the film already brings tears to my eyes. This movie has been the best for me ever since I saw a revival screening in Japan when I was a student.
level of actors and actresses not seen today. Even at their ages they still had class, and will always be remembered for their careers. The like of them will never be seen again.
Time waits for no one. It was only yesterday I met my husband to be and here I sit alone now - wishing for the days when we were young and beautiful. But it’s all such a fleeting moment in time. I think, how can this be, it’s just too too sad. Tears that keep falling as I push down the memories for they are too painful that I cannot even touch your hand.

I hadn't watched this movie in ages and I'd forgotten how enchanted it made me feel. I believe this was one of the final performances for most of the cast-Betty Davis, Lillian Gish and Vincent Price. It captured the feeling of a time gone by, what it's like to grow up around the islands on the Eastern coast. The things you look forward to, the things that stay with you time and tide supply to measure the passing of time. Just lovely. The perfect snapshot of a place and time and the lives of all who lived there.
What an EXCELLENT Film, Sooo Moving...touched all my emotions. You don't find anything like this today...that's very sad. I have always loved Vincent, Betty and Lillian, such wonderful Actors.
I absolutely loved this movie......I had never seen it? It is so precious!! Lillian Gish was outstanding, and I guess she was the oldest one in the movie??? I am so glad these very famous legends were humble enough to do it. It was a great credit to them...Wonderful movie...

51:00 In this one brief, silent scene, Bette Davis shows us exactly what great acting is. Just heart rending. These two legends together is almost too much greatness to bear.
@RMPsumma I could not agree with you more. In that brief moment of silence volumes were spoken. And this was right after Miss Davis had her second stroke. What an amazing woman. These two women were incredible actors. The whole cast was. It makes me sad to think we will never see this caliber of actors again. Don't get me wrong, there are decent actors today, however in my humble opinion, none will ever reach this greatness. It seems that today's movies and actors rely on violence, nudity, flash and glitter, etc. to make even passable movies. While all these actors needed to do was just stand there. Nothing else was necessary.
@@lilysandoval3809 Yes, it's great acting, though certainly one's life, one's "reality" often contributes to the acting. To be able to move me to sobs without a word, yes, that's great acting. Btw, Ann Sothern was my cousin-in-law for awhile.
Such beautiful and expressive faces, Lillian, Bette and Ann. Love their talent too. Vincent Price and Harry Carey Jr are so wonderful in this as well. What a treasure of a movie.

Loved the movie first few times I've watched, but now I see ending as sad. After decades of making others miserable sister "allows" her sister to have picture window in her own house. Everyone has their own way of showing others their love but what a sacrifice to be understanding and kind regardless how one is treated.
Such a beautiful movie. The last of the greats. They were so in depth with their characters. Vincent Price is "Priceless". Ann Southern always had that way cheerful way about her. Such sweet beautiful movie. Lillian Gish said she doesn't have anytime talking about dying, she's living! She put Bette in her place didn't she. TIDBITS: Ann Southern was 78, Bette Davis was 79, Vincent Price was 76 and Lillian Gish was 94. This was filmed on Cliff Island, Maine. Margaret Ladd (Libby), Mary Steenburgen (Sarah) & Tisha Sterling (Tisha), (Ann Southern's real life daughter) played in the very beginning of the movie, as the three young ladies running to see the whales. This was Lillian Gish's last movie, she died at 99. Miss Gish & Miss Davis could not get along at all during the making of the movie. Bette Davis, irreconocible por los estragos de la salud, pero con su voz de siempre, una gran dama de la actuación... se impone por presencia. Bello film para el final de su carrera...exquisita como la irascible Libby.
Kind of sad but we literally will not have humans like them again. All we can do is be as traditional and respectful of the past as we can. I just hope humanity will wake up and realize that what we can't let ourselves be consumed by the materialism and modernism of the 21st century. It's okay to live in the past. Just look around and tell me who in the modern world is happy. We must embrace tradition, it's the key to finding true fulfilment, I hope you all find your way. Best of luck.
Eskimo, the acting in this movie urges the viewer to savor the past and look forward with optimism; hence, Libby, in the end, wants the picture window to be completed before Labor Day.
@Eskimo Joe You are spot on with your comment. Indeed we must strive to keep traditions alive, I think it keeps us humble. It seems in today's world people are never happy unless they get what they want, or think they want. When the truth of it is, is to just want what you already have. And that is why so many people are unhappy. Constantly seeking the materialistic when all we really "need" is just outside our front door. If we could just take time to see the beauty in even the smallest of things we would never want again. And I too, hope that you and others find their way. Maybe as we travel down the road we will happen upon others that think as you do Joe, and life will be the amazing adventure it was meant to be.
I read the Readers Digest condensed version (weren't those great?) of the book which inspired this movie some decades ago. I'll have to make time to watch this.
It's hard to believe that Ann Sothern and Bette Davis are practically the same age when u look at both of them in this film, Bette was born in 1908 and Ann in 1909. The cancer and the smoking naturally aged bette more than some of her colleagues.
RIP Lillian Gish (October 14, 1893 - February 27, 1993), aged 99
RIP Bette Davis (April 5, 1908 - October 6, 1989), aged 81

Bette Davis, irreconocible por los estragos de la salud, pero con su voz de siempre, una gran dama de la actuación... se impone por presencia. Bello film para el final de su carrera...exquisita como la irascible Libby.
I love the fact that they didn’t get along during filming 🤣
Thank you for sharing this wonderful story. more like this needed
love every bit of this movie and second disc with everyone interviewed...
I read the Readers Digest condensed version (weren't those great?) of the book which inspired this movie some decades ago. I'll have to make time to watch this.
What a lovely movie!!
It's hard to believe that Ann Sothern and Bette Davis are practically the same age when u look at both of them in this film, Bette was born in 1908 and Ann in 1909. The cancer and the smoking naturally aged bette more than some of her colleagues.
