I've dated one, it wasn't as bad as people say. If there's anything to explain why they're perceived as "possessive and toxic," it's probably due to the mentioned missing parental figure problem. The girl I dated grew up without a father figure and once you got to know her, you could tell by her actions and remarks that this played heavily into why she was so attached to Hello Kitty, and why she viewed the world the way she does. Honestly, I can't even blame her, and it doesn't bother me. As someone who has gone through some emotional trauma at a young age, I can relate that things that were soft, sweet, and comforting helped me in those times. I always liked Cinnamoroll and Kuromi, and while I didn't consume a lot of Sanrio merch, I didn't have any issue with wearing shirts and things like that with the characters on them. To me, it helped me feel like I was able to fight back against the trauma with something that made me feel young again. People can look at that and think I'm weird, but I don't care. I'm only human, and if this is how people want to comfort themselves, I don't see any issue with it. As far as the whole possessiveness thing goes, I really don't care if my girlfriend is possessive, I think they should be, you're in a monogamous relationship after all. However, the girl I dated also was a little overly possessive, where she would get genuinely bothered or upset if I was talking to another girl in my free time. I couldn't have any friendships with any other girls, and it personally left a very bad impression on me, because I had no malicious intent, I'm just friendly and will talk to whoever without reading any more into it. Really I don't think that liking Hello Kitty/Sanrio merch puts you into this negative crowd, I think it's a gamble. I don't think anybody benefits by sticking this negative stigma on the branding itself, it's really just dependent on the person. I know that was a whole lot of nothing and doesn't really answer the question, but personally I see no issue with liking that stuff. Just don't make it your ENTIRE personality. That applies to pretty much anything and everything.

There's 100% a male counterpart. Years ago in HS (before this phenomenon was named) I had known a boy in my grade who was a fellow nerd. Our school was super small (400 students total) and friend groups often bled into each other so I saw him frequently, as he was a friend of a friend, but I never interacted with him enough to actually consider him one of my own friends. Anyways, he had a huge love for things like Gudetama (Sanrio), Dragonball Z, etc. and at some point I had developed a small crush on him. Why? I'm not actually sure where the crush came from, probably because he was one of the rare nerds that ACTUALLY took care of his appearance and hygiene. Well that little crush went away QUICK when I was around other girls that had dated him at one point, and the horror stories about him they had were, horrifying and grotesque to say the least. After that, I'd avoid him like the plague and kept him at acquaintance status.

I’ve dated some horrible people in the past and if anyone was interested in dating them, I’d try my hardest to make them reconsider for their own wellbeing. The fact that it was multiple people is enough of a tell that he’s not the greatest guy, if it was one bitter ex than maybe, but several others is whole other story. And even then, sometimes you can be blinded by attraction and not see how bad a person is until someone else shows you a different perspective. It happens, and most times it’s better to be safe than sorry.

My ex used to talk really badly about hello kitty girls too. My brother bought me a hello kitty shirt for Christmas and he took it because he 'didn't want me to be like that'. I don’t even think people’s behavior should be only based on what they are interested in, because absolutely any girl can act toxic in these ways, while having an interest in hello kitty or not. It’s how people in general can be or are, everyone no matter what they like, can be toxic, possessive, manipulative, ext.
There are just so many people in the world and it’s nearly impossible to just box up one category of people based on interests and looks and say, “yeah, maybe stay away from them” because this behavior doesn’t only apply to that specific category of people, but to humanity as a whole, mixed with everyone’s own live experiences.

Literally, like we can’t enjoy things anymore with people that making up in some sort of category or a stereotype that makes people actually believe it. Like when you have some interest then some people can go like “ooooh please stay way from that person, they could manipulative evil toxic blablablabla yada yada yada”. People need to realize for example that everyone who likes hello kitty in general is not always a “manipulative, crazy, gaslighter, toxic, red flag” or something like that.
As someone who likes both Hello Kitty and Kuromi, I can give you fellas a piece of advice:
If she has a lot of Sanrio merch and that's it, she's fine. Probably one of the sweetest girls you'll ever meet even if she has a ton of social anxiety and introversion. Maybe plays the ukulele or piano.
If she makes Hello Kitty/Kuromi her entire personality and also dresses like an e-girl/goth babe/baddie/alt girl,
she will probably traumatize you, stalk you for months despite being the one to end things, maybe threaten you with a knife and will never seek therapy despite how badly she clearly needs it

Jirai means ‘land mine’, and the reason is that the girl seems fine in the beginning but will explode if something sets her off, usually due to mental disorders.
Hello kitty is actually not a part of jirai-kei. My melody, kuromi, and cinnamoroll are instead indicators of a ‘mentally unstable’ girl and part of the style. This is because of the colours, pink, purple, black, and light blue which is common in Jirai-kei. There is also a children’s anime, ‘Onegai My Melody’ where through my melody and kurmois interactions, many viewers see my melody as some kind of psychopath towards kuromi.
In Japan, hello kitty is not the most popular sanrio character. There are annual sanrio character rankings, and the most popular characters every year are cinamoroll, kuromi, pompompurin, and pochaco. fans of hello kitty in Japan are actually more ‘pure’ and hello kitty is just so famous in Japan that you simply can’t make some sort of ratio of crazy and not crazy girls who like her. Instead kuromi and my melody are kind of signs of mental instability.
It’s actually really interesting to see how in both Japan and the west sanrio characters have been related to mental illness in young women, and how characters mean different things. So, I don’t think we should use jirai-kei for anything outside of Japan.

As someone who has dated a hello kitty girl, the stereotype is true for some ig.
She had ADHD, CPTSD, BPD, PDD, and was most likely Autistic and had a few other disorders.
She tried to ruin my life around the time we broke up and reported me to my hometown sheriff's department cause "I harassed her" cause I wanted to apologize to her about my behavior during our breakup talk. On top of that, her abusive adoptive parents claimed that I was a scum bag, and hurt their daughter in several different ways.
As words of advice, stay the FUCK away from them. They will try to ruin your life and drive you insane.

Most of them have personality disorders like BPD or borderline, usually caused by childhood SA. Those mental disorders are caused by extreme distress/trauma (usually repetitive), so seeing as their childhoods were robbed it doesn't shock me that they gravitate towards cutsey things more, just kinda makes sense to me lol humans crave what they didn't/don't have

@@stardust-vi not at all, lots of people with BPD are perfectly normal and live healthy lives, have good relationships ect But they've typically gone to therapy and the diagnostic process. A lot of people are under diagnosed, and unaware, a lot of people I've known were being manipulative without their own knowledge even sometimes. It's a complex diagnosis that needs more attention, and in general I think a lot of disorders are under diagnosed due to the state of healthcare/treatment in general in America

My ex girlfriend was a hello kitty girl, we dated for a little over a year and in that time she managed to violate every boundary I set with her, physically assaulted me more than a few times, she would joke about murdering me in front of my parents if I ever cheated on her, and held me in oncoming traffic with me in the passenger seat until I held to make her feel better. Mental health is not a joke and neither is who you commit your time to, you’ve been warned.
I personally think hello kitty girls dont actually like sanrio, they just buy the merch because its popular and they think projecting their mental problems into a character or characters is funny. They dont actually know what they're doing, and have heavy mental problems. Ngl, I used to hate Hello Kitty girls, due to me having multiple negative experiences with em. However the older I got the more I started to dig the character of Kuromi and merch associated with her, especially cause I’ve been a part of the goth/metalhead subcultures for years now, and now I’m starting to acquire more and more merch of Kuromi. And doubling this with the fact I’m a femboy, along with my rather unhinged tendencies to say the least, I’ve basically become the very thing I sought to destroy.
what goth and metal do you like?
Well in terms of goth music it’s mainly pretty basic stuff like The Cure and Siouxie and the Banshees, tho I do like some kinda more underground stuff like House of Harm. However in terms of metal I listen to quite a lot of stuff from like classic metal like Iron Maiden, Blue Öyster Cult, Metallica, and etcetera. To more modem bands like Sleep Token, Wage War, Poppy, a bit of Lorna Shore and etcetera. However most of the stuff I listen to is either metalcore or nu metal, like Deftones, Korn, Mudvayne, Disturbed, A7X, Slipknot, A Day To Remember, Trivium, The Fall of Troy, Linkin Park and etcetera. However I also ofc listen to some death metal too, like Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy, early Ensiferum, and etcetera. Ensiferum’s self titled album being basically my fav death metal album of all time, however after that, their music started sounding like cheesier, great value Dragonforce and removed a lotta the rlly heavy, dark and brooding, and folkier aspects of their first album and early work.

Why do they all look the same too? Like, they all make themselves look ghostly and have thick, black eyeliner. There's a Hello Kitty girl on here called Skarut who is a prime example of the look I'm talking about. It's not a bad look, but it creeps me out how they all have this exact same look as though they're clones of each other. Same thing with how many girls have nose rings now. Obviously fashion trends existed when I was growing up in the late 90's-2000's, but people didn't copy each other's styles to the extent that they do nowadays.

3 years ago I dated a hello kitty girl for the first time and let me tell you it was the most disgusting shit i have ever experienced with a woman in my life. she was a well known friend of mine already so i kinda knew what i was getting into, but it escalated so quickly. after almost a year without talking to her, we started chatting again and in a few days we set up a date, all went super well it was awesome, but the day after that she started to pressure me to say that i like her, and in service of this pressure i gave in and she became my girlfriend. the relationship lasted a single week, she was constantly threatening me if i didn't immediately answer her messages, she wouldn't let me play with my friends, and started to harm herself to get my attention. after that i'm having a hard time getting into a relationship again due to trust issues.
i was reminded of that when the lady mentioned that "cinnamon something" girls are the nicest, and i remember she being one of those (idk what to call, archetypes?)

Not too long ago i actually "dated" one of these girls long distance and i was totally oblivious to it. I usually only read these kinds of stories online but today i finally have to tell something.
So basically i was playing some fun roblox hangout game (stfu guys don't roast me). And i kid you not never had this happen but this female character was following me around in game so i talked to her and yea we basically just talked. Then we exchanged our discord and got to talking there, next thing i saw was a hello kitty pfp but i didn't think much of it. Iam not joking it was immediately clear she was obsessive, already next day while i was gaming she texted me multiple times demanding attention and now here comes the thing. I just recently watched this video by this small TH-camr and he explains in like a tier list ways to make a girl already attracted obsessed with you. And now thinking about it, i actually used these ways all that time ago unconsciously on her. So while she was already pretty obsessive at the beginning demanding attention all the time like every 5 minutes or even less and becoming really toxic when not getting it she became even more obsessive even quicker, it was a cycle that made her unbearable and i was totally oblivious to what was happening (never interacted with such a girl before). So after some days of us arguing because of her craziness and obsession with my attention she actually got fed up with my behavior so much that instead of becoming more obsessed she unfriended me lmao. So i guess that's the only way to easily get out of this, use tactics that make her more obsessed until she can't anymore.
You might want to watch out tho if you know her personally as she might just kidnap you. Anyway i can't recommend it was very tiring and distracted me from SQUAD and Escape from Tarkov.

There was this cute Goth kuromi girl in my class, we started to talk pretty quickly and i learned that she was a bipolar, and, other things, i still tried to give it a shot and today well, we've been in a loving relationship for the past 8 months. Only fucked up thing is that she attempted sui@ide a week after we got in a relationship and she had to stay in some sort of "rest facility" (how you call it in english) for 3 weeks but overhaul i've seems to had a good impact on her the rest of the time
