There are actually two different characters that were combined for the cartoon. In the comics Wolverine had a relationship to a japanese woman called Mariko Yashida, half-sister of the Silver Samurai. He was never in a relationship with Yuriko. The only thing is he killed her father, and she wanted revenge, becoming Lady Deathstrike much like in this episode.
I remember watching this two parter with my parents the night it first aired, came out the day after my birthday. Damn, I was about to turn 6 at that point >w
This was exciting when it first came out because they aired this and a new Power Rangers episode during Prime Time. That's 8 pm people... and remember that this is a kids' show. My child self was thrilled. That's why the "Coming Soon" was at the end. To get us hyped for the Phoenix... A 5-part episode series just FYI...
@@Matthewvhaynes The order to season 3 on disney is correct except for the longshot episode which is actually the tenth episode of season five. Also the season should end with the dark phoenix four-parter, Orphans end should be the first episode of season four and love in vain should be near the end of season four. I know the correct order because I recorded every episode when it came out back when I was twelve, plus the episodes make so much more sense this way. You'll notice that the beginning music is different and the animation is shittier. This is because half way through season five the studio cut the budget in half and sent it to a cheap studio in the Philippines I think it was? 🤔 There's a big drop in quality in season five but x-men 97 brings it right back and ups it.
@@MatthewvhaynesThe order for season 4 and five that I have is as follows, it's really up to you guys whether you want to use it or not. Season four:- 1 Orphan's end 2. Nightcrawler 3. The juggernaut returns 4. Weapon X, lies and videotape 5&6. Sanctuary parts 1&2. 7.Secrets not long buried 8&9. One man's worth parts 1&2 10. Courage 11&12. Proteus parts 1&2 13-16 Beyond good and evil parts 1-4 17. Love in vain 18.Have yourself a morlock little Christmas. Note The last two episodes feel out of place, all the seasons ending in a big finale except this one plus they are the two weakest episodes of the season so I wld watch them after proteus and before beyond good and evil. Plus the creators said they'd originally intended to end the series with beyond good and evil so it might have been a network thing to just air these 2 episodes after the main finale around Christmas time. Season 5 :- 1. Lotus and the steel 2. Family ties 3. Xavier remembers 4. A deal with the devil 5&6 The phalanx covenant parts 1&2 7. Bloodlines 8&9. Stormfront parts 1&2. Note this is the weakest two parter and caps off the first half of the season. The second half is the cheaper budget and studio and it's kinda jarring. 10. Longshot 11. The fifth Horseman 12. Jubilee's fairytale theatre 13. Hidden agendas 14. Old soldiers 15. Descent 16. Graduation day (series finale). Then you're good for 97 😎
This 2 parter was so special to me. First, cause we were finally getting new episodes and on top of that I got to see Gambit shirtless - which for 12 year old me was quite thrilling.
01:40 The only place I disagree with the "correct" / Disney+ order is it puts the episode Lotus and the Steel BEFORE Weapon X, Lies, and Videotape. Why is that an issue? Because Lotus and the Steel flashes back TO Weapon X, Lies, and Videotape!
While AKOM did the animation for seasons 1 & 2, they farmed both of these out to Philippine Animation Studio, Inc. Their episodes tended to have more fluidity, yet their characters tended to be both "shinier" and "shadowy" for whatever reason. You'll notice that Cyclops' uniform, for example, is mostly black with blue shading, rather than blue with black shading. They were also known for having SEVERAL animation errors and delays. This 2-part episode in particular, Lady Deathstrike was originally animated without a shirt on. The animators were sent model sheets, but disregarded them in favor of her design directly from the comics. This included exposed cleavage that was not acceptable for FoxKids' broadcast standards and practices. They had to send the episodes back to have something like 10,000+ frames of animation repainted by hand. Thankfully, they were able to get everything fixed in time for their premiere. Their episodes also include both "No Mutant is an Island" and "Longshot," which needed so many corrections that they did not air for over two years after their original intended placement. "No Mutant is an Island" ended up being completely reanimated from the ground up. One version aired in the US, the other aired overseas. They also animated "Cold Comfort," which has a lingering animation error that was still left IN the episode just to get it out on the air within the same season it was intended. You will know it when you see it. They also did the animation for the final 6 episodes. Marvel was in bankruptcy and couldn't put up funding for any of the production, so they were produced in-house entirely by Saban on the cheap. They used much simpler animation designs and changed up Jubilee's hair for some reason. The second episode you watched was written by Len Wein, who revived the X-Men comic 5 years after it was originally cancelled and co-created Storm, Colossus and Nightcrawler to the comics in Giant-Size X-Men #1 after previously co-creating Wolverine for his original guest appearance in The Incredible Hulk. He also co-created Swamp Thing for DC comics. The Spirit-Driker, the antagonist of the second episode, is based on the Soul-Drinker, an alien life form that ever only appeared ONCE in any X-men comic in their 61-year history (issue #107) for a grand total of 3 pages! Both of these episodes also premiered on a Friday night in the summer of 1994 as part of a special event along with the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers episodes "The Mutiny Part II & III" (season 2 premiere) a month before the 5-part Phoenix Saga premiered. It was used to set up the week-long event. Unlike the other episodes in the series, The Phoenix Saga aired one new episode across each afternoon and THEN came back on Saturday for a 6th new episode in the same week! I think you will enjoy the Phoenix Saga AND the Dark Phoenix Saga. 🤫
The Reavers was one of my favorite villian groups during the Outback era of the X-men. It produce one my favorite X-men covers from Uncanny X-men vol 1 251.
Greetings my Guyanese brotha! I see, and your wife are continuing the lords works with season 3! This is doing both of you a huge favor as this is good prep for X97! I also wanna remind you, that the entire core team of Xmen is not always needed for every battle and/or threat as saw back in season 1 and 2. And morph is recovering on Muir Island with Moira.
The reason why the animation got upgraded is because around this time X-Men was "soft cancelled" on Fox Saturday mornings after meeting the requisite amount of episodes needed for syndication. But the ratings were so high (#1 show in 95 countries) they brought it back with a better budget and aired the Phoenix Saga prime time for 5 nights.
Oh snaps! The episode I was waiting for! This episode is actually when I was introduced to the X-Men animated series! I watched this episode with my siblings a few months before the first X-Men movie came out! 🙏🏽💪
Question: Do you noticed that parts in episodes are lagging? Because those parts supposed to be fast and fluid. Like when Jean tried to read the alien's mind, that was supposed to be fluid. I think Disney messed up transferring the show digitally.
This episode originally aired during primetime on two nights in the summer, alongside the first two episodes of Power Rangers season 2. It was kind of a big deal (for me and my brother, at least 😂)

get ready for the phoenix saga
