Tommy is one of the greatest guitarists hands down. I have literally thousands of albums and he is def in my Top 5 favorite guitarists. He was a chameleon. He played all different styles. He inspired Jeff Beck! Jeff still tips his hat to Tommy by playing Stratus live. Nuff said.

The thing about Tommy was that , he was a shooting star among different constellations. James Gang ; Deep Purple ; Billy Cobham . He is truly missed !

I agree....I heard if first in 1976 as a13 year old. Private Eyes on vinyl on great stereo really sealed the deal for me. I thought it was much more cohesive than Teaser. Remember the day he died clearly.

Reggie McBride's underrated bass work on _Private Eyes_ was very influential for me. And they put him UP in the mix like few albums did with bass.

First heard Tommy on the spectre album and saw him live with Purple after replacing my favorite guitarist Ritchie Blackmore but he could play and I love him much respect his songs will never die.

I got to Tommy via James Gang without even realising he'd played for them, as I independently loved them both in their own rights. Then I heard he had a spell in Deep Purple, a huge band in their own right (I've not yet listened to any Zephyr). The first track of his I heard was Homeward Strut and it blew me away, I LOVED the way he almost attacked the music with the power of it. Most would have either destroyed the whole thing or smothered any music, but he was so good that he could pull it off. And it felt so different to anyone else I'd heard. I breezed through Teaser and Private Eyes - The Grind and especially Post Toastee are songs I don't think I could ever possibly get tired of hearing, but of course his whole catalogue is a blast. And a real sympathetic character leaps out from much of his lyrics, or so I felt; he just seemed like such a genuinely good soul. The kind you could imagine giving you the shirt off his back or his last couple of dollars if you needed them. I was so excited to hear what he followed up with - and then I was completely floored to learn that was the end of it, and he had died so tragically before realising his immense potential and that he was only 25.25! I couldn't believe it. How had he managed so much so young? 25 is so, so young. And man, I was not expected how hard it hit me to read that last exchange he had with the Miami News journalist, It just felt so real you could almost see it and hear it: Tommy must've looked so lost and lonely that this guy even said, "hey, take care of yourself, okay?"
"I've been taking care of myself my whole life, don't worry about me. I'll be around for a long time". It was 4 December, 1976; he was found dead the next morning. 25. He is a legend anyway, but I only wish he had gotten the good fortune his talent and good heart deserved. I really have never reacted to any other musician in the same way, and plenty of bright young things have met premature ends, look at the whole 27 club thing. But (apart from the fact he didn't even get that far, even 2 more years may have seen the release of potentially exceptional albums) it was different with Tommy. I still get sad to think about it now, and i don't even think I've ever heard him speak, only listened to his music and read a few printed interviews. But clear as day I know I'm right about him. If the world had more Tommy Bolin's it'd be much a kinder place, but when you factor in his talent...he was one of a kind. What a legend.

The sad thing to me is that after Blackmore left, they never should have called that band Deep Purple. Those guys were great together. Come Taste The Band was a great album but an entirely different thing from Purple. I think that as the years pass by, more people are realizing that Come Taste The Band is a great album.

Tommy was too good for Purple. I mean, he was very creative on his on way. Not a cliche rock guitarplayer. And no one could an can`t really replace Blackmore. Tommy never try`s to play like Ritchie. Purple fans hated that. And the fame/drugs took him to the limit. He was only 24 25 years old. Goddammit, he died too soon..

Tommy was so vast in his skills not only playing but writing.Jeff Beck Jimmie Page were in awe from him.Jeff Beck went on his fusion thing with many X Tommy players on hisBlow & Wired. Rush who toured with him changed from the Working Man metal to the unstructured fusion style metal also influenced by Tommy. I consider him as this doc states the Ultimate.Straying from 1 genre to the next & mastering it with ease.Left such a treasured amount of music in the few years. Sad what if?

I was a little too young to see Tommy playing in person at the local Denver clubs. I wished I had seem him perform. A friend of mine from college lived down the street from Joe Walsh on Sugerloaf Mountain and got to see him jam a few times. I heard that the first time Joe saw Tommy play in Denver he was floored. And I just found out recently that one of my neighbors knew Tommy from Sioux City, IA, then ran into him again after moving to Denver in the early '70s during Tommy's Energy days.

From what I've read, I don't think Karen left Tommy just to be with Glenn. There's way more to it. I remember reading that she said they had to split to grow up-something along those lines. Karen was also anti drugs and they had $$$ problems for most of their relationship. I've always wished that Karen would write a book-no one knew him better.

Fey? We was a very successful concert promoter, and to get there he had to be aggressive. Sometimes too aggressive. But he cared for the acts he managed and/or promoted. He was the exclusive US promoter for the Who and the Stones, so yea, he was to be an arrogant, cocky bastard. Even pulled out a gun on Axl Rose to "compel" him back on stage. He took no BS from anyone. And he got the job done.

I love Blackmore, but even Ritchie couldn't have done what Bolin did on Spectrum. Tommy was junked out by the time he went into Purple and his playing did suffer due to mainlining in his left arm (playing hand). I'll tell you who... someone who knew absolutely nothing about them... that's who. I mean what an ignorant comment from his girl friend... I don't think to this day she still has any real idea of what he was involved with there... she talks about em like they were a bunch of hacks... Ian Paice for starters, may well have been the best drummer Bolin ever played with!

His girlfriend is disgusting...she talks for Tommy, but she was stabbing a knife into Tommys back, because she left him for his "best friend" mr. Hughes (one of my favorite singers but he didn't treat Tommy right...).

Barry Fay was very jealous of Tommy Bolin,i didn't trust him.Tommy should have told him to fuck off and get out of his life. But Tommy trusted too many people, that was Tommy's nature.Maybe if he did get rid of these people everything would have turned out for the best.

Tommy Bolin was really just a flamboyant funkster... he'd basically hammer out on cool grooves... he had a style... but he was no replacement for Blackmore in Purple. And he was no where near Blackmore's league as a guitarist... ever!

I'll beg to differ. Bolin was every bit as talented-they were just very different players.

@@DCB728 Since making my original comment some 8 years ago... I've become a little more acquainted with Tommy Bolin's work as a guitarist.. especially some of the live stuff he did with 'Zephyr', the 'James Gang' etc. Yes he was a darn impressive player, no doubt about that whatsoever. But re: his replacing Blackmore in Purple... I think you hit it on the head... " they were just very different players ". I think it was just too huge a task to expect Tommy to fill the huge black-hole left by Blackers. Deep Purple was never the right band for him... I think Tommy Bolin was meant to become some kind of John McLachlan type player/character. He was no doubt meant to do big ground-breaking things as a guitarist/musician... but unfortunately, his "H habit" got the better of him. Big waste eh?

@@yellingelk A big waste indeed. Glad to hear you've better acquainted yourself with Bolin's music. I would agree that no one could replace Blackmore. It wouldn't have mattered how good they were-Blackmore was just too singular with Deep Purple. I will take some issue with your statement of "his H habit got the better of him". A lot of folks seem to think that Bolin was some stone cold junkie-shooting up every day for years. He was anything but. He did not even have track marks when they did the autopsy. He did have heroin in his system, that along with numerous other substances. He died from multiple drug intoxication. Tommy never should have been on tour-his entire life was spiraling out of control. Too bad the powers that be couldn't have put him in rehab. But, things were very different in 1976 compared to now in terms of dealing with addiction and rehab.
