Well, when you think about how a simple infection can cost as much as 2.5k in the US, 3k is *nothing* compared to a broken bone, torn tendon, etc. BUT, I concur, Seth is awesome.
The whole "time slowing down" thing always triggers too late for me. I crash at normal speed, but then it takes like five minutes for my bike to land on me.
One time I was on my bmx going to another neighborhood since my neighbor hood had a downhill on the road I was concentrated looking back to see the cars so I can slowly go on the side of the street but then you know what happens I suddenly look back my bike goes down and I look down and see I’m going downhill on grass and I dip lucky nothing was damaged from that 🌝
Karl Mc I've been stuck in winter since late October and my bike park was bull dosed in September so I haven't fallen lately, but 3 days ago I was drifting my bike in snow and fell, hard but not hard enough to even scratch me Anyways the way I see it I would rather falling and scratching something then sitting on my a$$ for 7 months a year lol
This video actually saved me today. I was riding at my local track when my front wheel hit a rock and I went over the handlebars but did what this video said and I landed on my feet. Thanks Seth for the great videos.
I watched this video for the first time about 3.5 years ago, and all I can say is thank you. I started practicing immediately, and I have went OTB around 8 times and around 7 of those I landed on my feet and just walked out of it. Thanks Seth.
One tip that I have is mental state at the moment when you're crashing/riding. If for example you're riding your bike to the limit and are afraid of crashing and sort of expect to crash at every corner/jump/obstacle, when you do crash, your mind will most likely be like: "I knew this was gonna happen, now it's gonna hurt and I'll surely break something". That's when you're more likely to get hurt. But if you're riding your bike to the same limit and instead enjoy every corner/jump/obstacle, and simply push it to the limit to get more fun out of it or better time on the trail, when you crash, your mind will be like: "Ahh so here's the limit, that'so awesome, look I'm flying. Ok cmon body land already, I gotta tuck and roll and hop back up on the bike, the time is ticking and I want to be faster than the last time." That's when you simply don't leave an option for the injury to happen and it most likely won't. Of course it's not exactly like that all the time, but I think that your mental state at the time of riding/crashing, plays a crucial role on how it will end :) So my tip is: If you don't feel like it, or are just a bit more scared than usual, don't push it. The track will be there tomorrow as well.
I totally agree, that's a GREAT advice! Also, the adrenalin rush when you crash really gets your mind working at warp speed and as Seth said it's really really important to use it in your advantage!
Agreed 100% The last few seasons I was always a pussy when it came to jumps that had a gap and everytime id try id always think about not making it and crashing and this season I told myself I can do it and kept telling myself that and i've yet to crash on jumps this season! good to know. i broke my legs in the past skateboarding last thing need is to do it again. it was still worth it i love skateboarding i don't anymore but still love it
" a new wheel or set of handlebars will likely cost less than your medical bills," Sweden has free medical treatment, How should i do then? protect the bike with my body?
Either way, you don't want to miss riding time while you're healing. I broke my wrist last October nd missed about 4 months worth of riding. It also cost me about $1,200 USD out of pocket, even though I actually HAVE insurance. between all the co-pays nd deductibles we have to pay, we get fucked in the US on medical care.
Well, to humor you, going by the general consensus that time is more expensive than money and healing takes more time than replacing bike parts... In all seriousness though, I'd rather break my bike than being unable to ride it for any period of time longer than five days.
While crashing in Sweden i've actually had moments when i'm trying to calculate the damage mid-crash to figure out if hurting myself or the bike is worse xD
can't thank you enough for your videos. been riding since a kid but with no real skill, just foolish bravery. all your videos have great tips and skills to work on. keep it going.
when I'm riding and when I have to go over the handlebars instead of your legs going under neath you (possibley catching the handlebars) I normally just bring my legs out to the sides like jumping over a fence or wall
I know this is an older video but it's good to watch again and it helps show new bikers a couple tricks to stay a little safer. Great job keep up the good work.

Good tips! Yesterday, Thanksgiving Day 2018, I went head first over the bars trying to ride it out and save the bike. Wrong. Now, here I am with a broken clavicle, 3 broken ribs and a punctured lung and still I can’t wait to get back out on the trail! Thanks for being good inspiration, Seth. Happy Holidays! See you on the trail.
Just had to bail my bike for the first time and I’m glad I watched your video several weeks ago! Escaped with just a few extremely light scrapes, thanks for the tips!!!
So you said "When you're crashing, time slows down..." For me, it's the complete opposite. Everything seems to speed up when I crash. It feels like I go from losing control to hitting the ground in the blink of an eye. Will crashing "slow down" if I expect the worst?
I'm not sure. Maybe this effect doesn't happen for everyone, but I've found that I'm able to do extraordinary things in the very worst situations. I think that staying alert and confident probably helps more than expecting the worst!
so this is an adrenaline response. OP is anxious in a disaster scenario while you have an adrenaline influx which causes you to experience that perceived slowing of time and ability to react amazingly. I am not a doctor so I cannot speak to how OP can overcome this issue. Anxiety can influence everything in your life negatively and is supposed to keep you from doing stupid things. In this situation though, anxiety is is an active detriment so all I can say is that OP needs to remove their anxiety so their adrenaline response can kick in. In other words OP, evaluate your mental state, maybe see a doctor, and most definitely keep practicing.
I've debated this very thing with my friends and I think it's just generally vastly improved reaction time, which is typically better for people who do a lot of physical activities, biking especially, since it often demands fast reactions. I also get this slow-down the moment I feel the bike is out of my control. The very first thing that goes through my mind is "fuck this, I'm about about to fall now". And then comes this weird feeling like "no big deal, just not on your head."
+Seth's Bike Hacks for me, every time I have a "surprise" crash (clipping a crank or pedal on a root of clipping end of bars on trees) everything speeds up and it gets your adrenaline going so you dont really feel the fall. On a crash where im sliding out or going ass over tea kettle or looping a wheelie, everything slows down and also seems to hurt more, anyways, great vid keep up the good work
Thanks a lot. I have never thought about learning to crash but I will definitely try tomorrow with my kids. I have done few over the bar and having done judo when I was a kid helped me a lot.
When I wrecked going full speed down a diamond I remember that time shift. But during, I started thinking more about how to make it out of it. I was wearing a full face so I wasn't as worried about protecting my face, I just knew, whatever I had to do, was to get on my back where my backpack was to protect myself from the rocks coming up. I was able to tuck and roll and, while my handle bars initially impacted my chest (due to loose soil conditions and not getting into jump position fast enough) I was able to jump the bars, tuck in (while I was already face first into the trail LOL) and roll onto my side. The bike landed on top of me, but my back pack kept me from injuring my spine on the rocks, and allowed me to slide to a stop with no injuries. Other than my derailleur coming out of adjustment, a quick screw turn fixed it and I was on my way. I need a new helmet though, the rocks did a number on it. LOL Pretty much everything you said here is spot on. Don't focus on saving the bike. Save yourself. Hardware is replaceable. You are not.
Good needed video on how to avoid injury when crashing. People need to know this because you are gong to crash at some point. I have injured my sciatic three times going over my handlebars down a steep, gravel, rutted trail off a rock cliff, one of them included a pulled hamstring as well, with 2-3 months of recovery every time. I landed on my feet each time but slipped on the gravel like doing the splits. Quit trying that jump.
When I was 8 or 9 I was on Aline and hit my forward brakes with out touching my back breaks and completely went over the handle bars but some how I escaped with no injury
I am not even joking this saves my life i was going down a huge hill with no gar on (helment ect) i ran into my brothers back wheel and i was going over 25 mph and i whent over the bars and got out on my feet. thanks you r my fav channle
I broke my collarbone last year(in Sweden so free healthcare). Your bike is more rugged than your body and far more rugged than your body will be in 50 or so years when all of those seemingly full recoveries come back to haunt you. I'm sure that everyone talking about getting hurt being the better option is joking, but I wanted to point out that unnecessary injuries and risks can be a big deal after some time(and what may seem like an entirely healed injury may stop you from mountain biking in the future). Oh and that collarbone was supposed to be a full recovery, but now I have a small "spur" type protrusion that digs into a nerve sometimes and can keep me from sleeping in a comfortable position, and if I had not worn a helmet I would likely have far more to complain about than disturbed comfort while sleeping.
With pre-planning you can do anything you want but when you are in a real life scenario, caught by surprise, a crash then is a different story....nice one!
this Happed To Me when I was practicing a front Willie I just over the Bike. but I didn't tuck and roll I just sit there with my hands over my head Lol Great Tips Btw
in my experience: when going otb, bars tend to turn in one direction or the other. Like Seth said, try to rotate and ab crunch your feet upward. My biggest advice is to focus on which side the bars are coming toward you while they rotate. If your bars turn clockwise (right), try to get that right leg as high as you can to prevent it from getting grabbed by the natural rotation of the bars. the left foot can stick around a bit (if bars turn clockwise). as you bail otb, the bars are moving away from your left foot which gives more time for error on that side. this is far from fool-proof since the mechanical trail of your fork may end up straightening the steering direction when the front tire finds a hold on the ground-returning the bars to neutral. SICK VIDEO AND RELEVANT CONTENT FOR US ALL!
Great advice, I remember when I intentionally laid the bike down on a trail because I picked up way too much speed and was heading for a sketchy double drop I walked away mostly fine but if I had tried to go for it I would have gotten broke off bad. Every time I've gotten injured it's been because I tried to hang on and ride it out when everything was going wrong.
Hey Seth, thank god I watched this video. I was recently biking and all of a sudden a berm/ wall ride came out of nowhere and I almost went flying into a large tree. Luckily I jumped off of the bike and rolled to the side, my bike took a large beating but I just got a large scratch. Thanks Seth.
Thank you my friend, good video....and that's why I quit riding clipped in a long time ago. Its because of the WTF moments that happen,,, and then something is stopping you from your natural instinct of ""if I dont get off NOW, I will die""
Genius idea to practice bailouts! I would add the coordination of lowering your dropper post and unclipping your feet as many of my crashes are falling over because I did not do that well enough. 🤕
When rolling, tuck in your head and go over your shoulder with your arms loosely creating and “o” shape in front of you, diagonally across your body, practice on flat ground to get the hang of it
+Thomas Doran You value your shins more than your brain? I guess if that's the way your brain works, maybe it's not worth saving. Seriously though, always wear a helmet. Broken legs and arms can almost always be fixed but if you damage what's inside your head you could spend the rest of your life unable to do anything but stare at a wall. I know that sounds horrible but it's true.
I had a good ride today but I was about to hit a pretty steep drop and went otb and after knowing these tricks saved me I went feet first and rolled into som bushes but escaped with just a few brouses thanks for the tips
Nah, that just makes you an idiot. Doesn't matter if you can get patched up for free, it's always better to try to not risk a possibly long-term injury than a bike, even if it's an expensive one. Remember those things are sturdy as fuck and nobody cares if the paint is scratched, it just means it gets used a lot.
I've got hours worth of falling practice from skateboarding, but it's easy to get away from a skateboard. Still a little terrified of a giant hunk of metal between my legs. Mostly, going over the bars. It still looks scary, but your jumping over the bars technique actually makes me feel a bit better... just hope that when I need it, I don't hook my feet on the bars on the way over!
***** ok not "free" we pay loads of taxes. But i broke my arm last year and had to pay nothing in the hospital, my insurance also payd my salary for the 4 month i was out...
+Brozilla McBad same here, but I can replace a bike on my next pay day... if I brake my legs I can't buy new ones in a month I have to wait for them to heal
+AceRidesBikes ahh ohhh good you tell me cause i didn't knew....of course you should stay healthy, even if you have good insurance your health is the most precious gift you have. trust me it was not funny with my broken arm. i took me 3 weeks to learn how to wipe my ass properly left handed.
Martial Artists have learned for centuries how to prevent injuries during battle and how to TUMBLE/ROLL out of a Crash. They can also Kick Your Ass if you try to Steal their bikes.
Hello Seth. I have a lot of tips for bailing off a skateboard crash (a skill that I master) but had none for escaping an mtb crash. Thanks for sharing yours. Btwy, I think that in my case the base tip for embracing ways for escaping mtb crashes would be to deprive my bike of anything valuable or too finicky on it so I don't try to save it as I´m crashing, just tossing the bike and concentrating on saving myself instead.
i watched this a nong time ago today my brake cable just frayed and ripped going down a hill a remebred this video and i bailed . lucky for me all that happend was i scrapped my knees and messed up my pedals! thanks seth u saved me !!
Learning judo/martial arts breakfalls would be even better, because it includes parkour-style rolls AND some other good life-saving habits (such as impulsive pressing your chin to your chest)
My second ever mountain bike crash. No helmet because it was just a neighborhood trail, not going super-fast either. front wheel went up and came down but I high sided headfirst into a thorn bush. LOL.
I went over a root, so the front wheel popped up and I tilted sideways in the air a little bit and I landed mid-drift and got a bit of traction and flew over the bike. Thank God for adrenaline.

LOL
Pretty much everything you said here is spot on. Don't focus on saving the bike. Save yourself. Hardware is replaceable. You are not.
I'm forwarding this to every cyclist I know
Did you see his left foot at 3:18!? that looks like he's hurt...
Cuz he is
Good needed video on how to avoid injury when crashing.
“A new bike will likely cast less then your medical bills”
Me: *Laughs in European*
As a new mountain biker... I needed this. THANK YOU!
Lazy Cake broke my collar bone 3 weeks ago. Sucks bad. Almost back to work thank god.
With pre-planning you can do anything you want but when you are in a real life scenario, caught by surprise, a crash then is a different story....nice one!
3:24 when he starts running I don’t know why it made me laugh so hard 😂
These tips have helped me a ton especially when I try to climb up a short steep snow hill i just throw my bike regarding where it goes.
this Happed To Me when I was practicing a front Willie I just over the Bike. but I didn't tuck and roll I just sit there with my hands over my head Lol Great Tips Btw
*jumped
*wheelie
I think willie or willy is what you should say for a joke
in my experience: when going otb, bars tend to turn in one direction or the other.
Omg I just built a jiant mtb jump and failed it and bailed proper thanks seths bike hacks
Seth I love your videos
Thanks!
Hey seath today I was going to some trails when I was hit by a car these tips actually helped me avoid injury
What about knee pads/shin guards, elbow pads, etc.?
+ThingsDemystified they are the final line of defense
Seth's Bike Hacks They are the first mate.
ThingsDemystified they help but don't guarantee that you won't get injured
Teodor Kuběna Your first line of defense is your riding ability
Hey Seth, thank god I watched this video. I was recently biking and all of a sudden a berm/ wall ride came out of nowhere and I almost went flying into a large tree. Luckily I jumped off of the bike and rolled to the side, my bike took a large beating but I just got a large scratch. Thanks Seth.
Where is your helmet . Safety is number one priority
Welcome to My labowatorry
xD
Boom it werks like magik
double d fourty
Oh Wow... Amazing
Thank you my friend, good video....and that's why I quit riding clipped in a long time ago. Its because of the WTF moments that happen,,, and then something is stopping you from your natural instinct of ""if I dont get off NOW, I will die""
I just close my eyes and wait for everything to stop
This is my problem when mountain biking... not falling correctly! Thanks for the tips!
This video saved me from eating shit
LImber up. that's always good to do before a ride. Knowing how to bail first will actually give you more confidence to learn how to actually ride.
Saw this a week too late, RIP to my collar bone 😢
Genius idea to practice bailouts! I would add the coordination of lowering your dropper post and unclipping your feet as many of my crashes are falling over because I did not do that well enough. 🤕
We have free medical in Australia so yeah plus can you do more bmx videos plz
When rolling, tuck in your head and go over your shoulder with your arms loosely creating and “o” shape in front of you, diagonally across your body, practice on flat ground to get the hang of it
wear protection appropriate to what you're riding
+Thomas Doran you sent the sharpest knife in the drawer.
+Eric Cartman was wondering when someone read the post as an inmuendo
I'm running down stairs with no protection, i crashed 2 times, i got out safe 2 times, only my derailleur hanger was a bit bent (which i bent back)0
Seth you’re the best crasher this side of the Mississippi
When u crash i never let go of my Road bike cuz its so light i can just carry it
😂😂😂
love it when he says especially in the us 1:19
When someone asks me to hangout after school: “Wanna Hang Out!”
Me: “Nah gonna practice bailing my mtb”
Friend: “OH”
I had a good ride today but I was about to hit a pretty steep drop and went otb and after knowing these tricks saved me I went feet first and rolled into som bushes but escaped with just a few brouses thanks for the tips
fuck you gavin
1:03 your legs look bad
Omg this video is a life saver! The OTB tip literally sayed my life
I live in Britain where healthcare is free so it's bike before body here I guess 😅
It still looks scary, but your jumping over the bars technique actually makes me feel a bit better... just hope that when I need it, I don't hook my feet on the bars on the way over!
i live in germany, MEDICAL TREATMENT IS FOR FREE!
***** ok not "free" we pay loads of taxes. But i broke my arm last year and had to pay nothing in the hospital, my insurance also payd my salary for the 4 month i was out...
+Thomas Doran same in england
+alex Taylor high five mate...
I got long legs and I couldn’t jump over my bars for my life
Great video.
That OTB trick could definitely save someone!
Tip:
Don’t fall off
"Medica bills"
-Laughts in European
*sad American noises*
It was a 2 word quote how did you mess it up bruh
@@booty_hunter4207 Nah man, it's medica bills.
i watched this a nong time ago today my brake cable just frayed and ripped going down a hill a remebred this video and i bailed . lucky for me all that happend was i scrapped my knees and messed up my pedals! thanks seth u saved me !!
You should Learn basic parkour
Child Racism He's short enough to jump over the bars.
Learning judo/martial arts breakfalls would be even better, because it includes parkour-style rolls AND some other good life-saving habits (such as impulsive pressing your chin to your chest)
Loved this video . Youre even better than global cycling network
I'm watching this after crashing tonight. Thanks for the tips.
This video is probably the only reason I haven’t broken my legs yet. Thanks Seth.
Some of the best advices ever 👍🏾, thanks for sharing
