What I learned from crashing on big jumps at Whistler Bike Park

  • In another video, we talked about how mountain biking can relieve stress. This is only true when you're using mountain biking as an escape-not when it's the actual CAUSE of the stress.
This week’s video takes place at Whistler Bike Park, and is a story about how your mental state can get you hurt on a mountain bike. In my case, feeling relaxed and happy makes me ride great. Feeling pressured and preoccupied to ride certain things almost always leads to injury. This is why so many people crash on their “last lap”. The park patrol medic even called it “the Witching hour”.
In this video, delays on getting footage led to preoccupation, and then to poor riding. Sound familiar?
There’s also a lesson about practice. I haven’t ridden big jumps since last summer, yet I jumped into a bigger trail than I had ever ridden after just a few days at Whistler. As someone with a history of riding poorly under pressure, this was not a smart idea.

I always am at a lack for words when explaining how practicing and consistency makes a good artist (Not some magical innate talent) without sounding bitchy and dry. I really love that quote, explains what I have been trying to say for a long while.

I mean. Heights as in falling down is kinda.. Well unsure how extreme yours are. Anyways I had those. Not panicy but had. I'm still not the one to dangle his legs at a cliff but im not afraid of height, don't get dizzy etc. That was after I went climbing in a hall with my cousin once. I didn't look down the first few walls. Then way down, 13meters,my feet touched the ground later than expected and then I looked down and after a while the fear was gone. I had to go to the German army. I sure had respect for gaps in between rocks but we were in the mountains and I had no feeling about it. We abseiled at least 20metres. No problem I was even so enthusiastic, I jumped down special forces style as you'd expect a black clothed figure crashing into a window. Only that I damn near hit my head in a gap in the wall. But it was fun really

How do you call for help? How do you know who to call? Are there signs at bottom of the lift, advising you to make note of a phone number? Do cell phones work all over the mountain?
How long does it take for help to arrive?
How do they get you down the mountain? I am guessing that they have to walk you to the nearest fire road where they have a motor vehicle?
What became of Flynn's bicycle? Does the rescue team take it down the mountain for you? Do they hold it for you until you are able to return for it?
What fees are involved in them rescuing you?
What fees are involved in them transporting you to a hospital?
What fees are involved in them storing your bicycle?
How far away is the hospital?
If the injured person does not have a friend to drive his car for him, is he allowed to leave his car there? Or will they tow it? Is the parking free, or is there a daily fee?
I am just curious as to how many other issues an injured rider will have to deal with, on top of broken bones?
    Has Flynn recovered?
    Is he riding, again?
    Thank you.
