    Forced out of his own company by former protégé Darren Cross, Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) recruits the talents of Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), a master thief just released from prison. Lang becomes Ant-Man, trained by Pym and armed with a suit that allows him to shrink in size, possess superhuman strength and control an army of ants. The miniature hero must use his new skills to prevent Cross, also known as Yellowjacket, from perfecting the same technology and using it as a weapon for evil.

    As far as the weight/density issue, we only know how Darren's particle worked and the heaviest thing he shrank was himself. We have no idea how different Pim's particle was.

    The fingerprint thing does work. You take a bottle cap, but some super glue into it, and put it over the fingerprint. The gases from the glue react with the fat in the fingerprint and form a white paste. Take a photo in front of a black background, invert the colors and print it on foil with a laser printer and you have a 3d structure. Spread a thin layer of wood glue over it, let it dry and peel off. Glue it to one of your fingers and you have someone else‘s fingerprint that will fool most scanners.

    Here's the comic book explanation regarding the size/density issue.
    Pym Particles originally come from an alternate dimension called Kosmos. When a subject is affected by Pym Particles, they connect with Kosmosian mist in a metaphysical way. The technical term for this connection is hyperphasing. When a subject shrinks past a certain point, excess mass is shunted off into the otherdimensional mists allowing the subject to retain its shape without an impossible increase in density. This results in a decrease in overall weight but living subjects still typically observe an increase in proportional strength.
    Conversely, using Pym Particles to grow causes one to draw in additional mass from the mist to maintain relative density. While there is a strength increase to go along with this, it gets proportionally smaller the more a subject grows.

  • @johnniequinn3215
    @johnniequinn3215 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Hector moment: In the comics the explain that pym particles can affect apparent mass and density as well as size. I don't think they wanted to get that expository in the movie.

    • @mmattson8947
      @mmattson8947 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Even in the movie, when an ant grows to human-size, it doesn't have the same mass as a regular ant.
      So either there is a control in the regulator to change mass/density, or the effects are different for shrinking versus enlarging.
      If necessary, Pym actually had miniature tanks and cars built to scale, so that they would work normally when enlarged.
      (Which is insane, but he had money and comic book physics on his side.)

    The two Ant-Man movies are probably my most rewatched MCU films. They are just comfort films for me. I love the humour, I love how they capture the powers, the cinematography in general, the family dynamic, the cast, the scale of the problem. I also totally agree with Agustin, that I miss them doing ant stuff. It's THE special thing about him, his power. And especially in Quantumania felt like we were mostly at regular size as an audience and missed a lot of the action.

    12:30-13:10 I think the main issue is they keep the general pattern of red, greys, and black the same and don’t really change much of where they go/how much. The most major difference, outside of the helmets, is from this to Civil War, but after that and kinda like Iron Man after AOU for me, they kinda seem the same with some minor changes. Maybe if they changed to Hank made it predominantly black and grey with red highlights when he wore it to stay stealthy and as Scott got more personal input, it gets more much brighter red on it and maybe even some blue here and there like the comic one. But eh, guess they like the design so much they didn’t feel the need to deviate far from it, the hell do I know?

    I have always gotten the feeling that the "shrinking atomic distance" isnt quite how the pym particles actually work, because if that was the case how could you go sub-atomic? you can't shrink the distance so far that it goes into the negatives- theres gotta be something else at play there

    Awesome re-watch, homies. I enjoyed this so much! BTW, Michael Peña was on the Oscar-winning movie, "Crash" (2004) playing a dramatic role. His climactic scene with his daughter and the "bullet proof cape" teared me up back then--but I definitely agree, Peña is soooo underrated as an actor! On another note, I also think Corey Stoll, Billy Zane AND Timothy Olyphant are of the same "type" of actor that ooze good/bad guy at the same time.

    @hiccuphufflepuff176 ปีที่แล้ว

    I haven't seen Quantumania yet, and I'm not a scientist, but my take on the weight/density/smaller-than-atom issue is that:
    1: It doesn't make sense as presented, the writers got some of the science wrong. The in-universe reason is that the characters explaining Pym tech don't actually understand it themselves, and are either succeeding despite flawed theories, or making stuff up to hide how little they know.
    2: Obviously, there is some kind of mechanism that's also changing mass, and it doesn't really work by pushing your atoms closer together. Scott can choose to be light enough to carry or super-dense with other controls in the suit that just weren't mentioned, (he's consistently heavy throughout the initial shrinking scene before he learns to use it) and the disks are designed to always adjust the mass (light keychain, heavy Thomas and ant.)
    3: There is no plausible scientific explanation for what Pym Particles are actually doing, and I think it will be revealed to be a form of magic. I don't think it's likely but I would love a surprise cameo from Dr. Strange or Wanda to reveal this... "What are you doing in the Quantum Realm?!" "What are YOU doing in a magic realm?!" "...whoa!" lol

    @CaptainPikeachu ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My favorite part of these Ant Man movies is that they didn’t fall into the trope of making the ex wife and new step-parent bad people in order to make Scott look good. Maggie is fair and kind and a good mom, and Paxton genuinely cares about Maggie and Cassie and is a good stepfather. These movies allowing them to become a supportive blended family is honestly amazing.
    Also, in regards to child support, just because Scott is in prison doesn’t mean he can’t pay. It’s possible he may have filed with the courts to change how much he has to pay given his situation. The court may have allowed him to not pay or only pay a small amount until he gets out of prison. So it’s entirely fair that Maggie is asking him for child support given it’s likely that she and Paxton are the ones primarily been paying for Cassie’s care. Also I think it’s important to note that Cassie being 6 and Scott having a 3 year prison sentence means that Scott knowingly risked himself possibly get sent to prison despite having parental responsibilities AND knowing the pressures it would place on Maggie if he got caught. So really, as good hearted as Scott is, what he did was really unfair to Maggie.

    There's definitely inconsistencies in how the film deals with mass during shrinking (how do you shrink a tank and have it not be as heavy as a tank?), but I think that's just a consequence of having shrinking tech and wanting it to be cool. Like he runs along a gun without it putting any strain on the guy holding it, but still has the force behind his punches as if he weighs the same. It's just one of those things where for any cool sci fi tech you need to break some science rules, unfortunately we all have a common sense understanding of how light/heavy things behave, so it makes our brains go "wait how does THAT work?" I think with things like this we just need to accept the 'rule of cool' of it all and let it slide because the more you look at it the more you notice little things that "wouldn't work".
    The big one that always bugs me is when the original wasp has to shrink to pass straight through the titanium plating, which we're told will put her in the quantum realm, yet she goes through it THEN breaks the wires inside the missile.

    • @Iam_Stu
      @Iam_Stu ปีที่แล้ว

    I think in the MCU at least... as far as weight VS mass VS size. Mass is the amount of particles (and is the same regardless of size), but they seem to interact as far as weight depending on object size range. Leads me to think the source of gravity / weight in MCU (and maybe real world) is based on electrical resistance and the resistance is based on overlap of an objects size / 3D cross-section with the underlying grid / matrix / aether of the universe which is steady / not shrank along with suit / object. So they still have weight... but proportional to the overlap with 'normal' matter / grid / aether.

    this movie honestly always reminds me that Scott is actually...pretty smart. Like everyone was saying that there's no way Kang should've been an enemy to ant man because he's not nearly powerful enough and Kang would just destroy him - I mean, number one that was a weakened Kang but number two Scott might not be super powerful but he's more than just goofy, he's pretty resourceful and smart so Idk I think people underestimate this character a lot.

    I think people ‘react’ to the older movies better after seeing the evolution of the characters and stories 20+ movies out due to how much the newer stories continue to build upon the details of the original films.

    The summer the Dora movie came out, my kids and I (teen & preteen at the time) had a choice between that and Lion King remake. We chose Dora and it was fantastic, no regrets. And I still haven't watched the Lion King remake.

    Oh also, regarding how PYM Particles work. Darren Cross, Doesn't know exactly what's needed to create the red PYM particles. I like to believe Hank purposely doesn't explain how it actually works to anyone, on how objects get smaller, their weight will change depending on their size.

    Agustin: "I know so much sh!t about a lot of different thing but I'm no expert on anything". Literally a jack of all trades but a master of none. Still, oftentimes better than a master of one.

    Both Patty Guggenheim’s Madisynn and Michael Peña’s Luis are in California right? Someone somewhere can write them an out & out sitcom (One each?) , set in the MCU, surely?

    If you wanna see Peña tackle a dramatic role, watch Narcos: Mexico. He and Diego Luna are phenomenal.

    Remember, the sequel had that INSANE post-credit scene. For the sake of that lone person on the planet who hasn't yet succumbed to the MCU (lol), I won't spoil it.
    Keep up the great work!

    Corey Stoll was great in Midnight in Paris. Really charming and fun Woody allen movie, which also pairs Owen Wilson and Tom Hiddleston years before Loki. Stoll also happens to be in the really awesome, under-seen movie, Lucky Number Slevin. Amazing cast in it.
    32:34 - I recall Steve-O performing that ritual on Wildboyz, though not for the full time. But I remember the female ritual being way worse (if I happen to be remembering it right), involving every hair from their body being plucked by hand one at a time while they have to stand and endure it for however long it takes.

    Ant man seems to get the tiniest roles. 🤓
    He didn't just fight an avenger, he beat captain america in his first real super fight. I mean, they weren't trying to murder each other as hard as they could, but still. Ant man is an OG superhero.
    I like A.M. in the MCU's narrative. It fits a cinema storytelling format. I say this as a fan of the old comics too.
