How to butterfly push hockey goalie tips and tricks

  • Just wanted to give some tips for power pushes and just landing in a butterfly to begin with. With butterfly or "power pushes", once you get better at it, you will be able to relax your body more when doing it. This will you to reach for pucks easier with your glove and blocker if they are relaxed and your upper body is more upright. But when you're first learning to butterfly push, the strength in the muscles needed and flexibility just isn't there so in the beginning I really stress doing what I describe in the video.

    Good day.... I'm 59 years old and 15 years after hanging up my skates after a collar bone displacement and 7 years after being diagnosed with Parkinson's, I am trying back at joining a shinny league.... After 3 skates, I had the crazy thought about trying the goalie thing....I bought used equipment online and went out ready to embarrass myself... Good thing for me, most of the other players were very empathetic and took it easy on me and encouraged me to come back...I can't wait to get out there again soon to try out your training advice..... Presently, I can't move once in the butterfly position.... Thanks for this video..... From an old fart trying to play goalie...

    This is one of the more informative videos on the subject. Thanks for making it. The majority of videos are either for people who already know how to slide, or they just show you how its done, without much explanation of HOW its done.

      A huge factor in closing the five hole is having properly profiled and correctly fitted pads for your legs and overall level of flexibility.

    Thank you for taking the time to make this. I'm older (45) and started out "old school" style (think Grant Fhur). been trying to rewire my muscle memory for a while now and watching your video help put a lot of different body movements into perspective! More things to try next game! Video was a great explanation and an eye opener for me. Much appreciated.

      Same here, my novice coach told me he hadn't seen saves like that since Grant Fhur after I got off the ice. This really put it in perspective for me.

    This is a rad video. I'm in the exact same position.... 36 yrs old, played a bit as a kid and was never taught anything butterfly. Just started playing goal again, and having trouble with this particular skill. My slide is terrible, but I WILL get better at this!! Thanks man!

    This is the most relevant video I’ve found to address my issue. I’ve only just watched it, so I still need to go out and try it, but you’ve called out exactly what happened to me, namely, spinning in place. I’m looking forward to trying the correction out.

    Without goalie gloves your hand positions during slide demonstrations look a little bit like jazz hands :-) Nice video.

    Im 66 years old and still playing, been playing for 26 years i learned stand up goalie style. my pads are old (COOPERS 32 FILLED WITH DEER HAIR lol) and they dont work very well for butterfly style, equipment has changed so much, so much lighter but i found that it doesn't last as long. thank you for being honest and the great instruction . that style isnt natural to me and hard on my knees. but im working on it thank you

    Push like you're trying to lift your other leg with your push leg. That's how you explain loading. Always push like your main push point starts with your "big toe".

    Great video! Thankyou for taking the time to make it! I'm a 44 year old goalie playing in my first season, and the butterfy has been so difficult for me to learn, that I've basically abandoned it. I'm going to practice the tips in this video and hopefully become better with the butterfly.

    From personal experience I found that skates (blade length) as well as newer pads which sit flat on the ice. The old Bauer's etc didn't sit flush with ice. Makes a world of difference

    Thanks Chris! I been playing keep for 18 years. I am 47 years old now. I got started when my work buddies needed someone to stand in for a sick goalie at their pick up skate. Because I was a pretty good football/wrestler in high school/college, I had some natural athletic ability and could rely on my athleticism to make saves, so I just kept playing with them. Eventually, I (we) actually made it to a fairly high level in our local beer league (California, so prob not "high level" for east coast). My big issue has always been that I have never been able to drop into a real butterfly and have always wished I could. I tend to drop into the "pad face down" position like you talked about at 6:57 of your vid. In fact, last year I took a slap shot to my knee and was out for 4 months and still have some pain in my knee. My buddies call my technique the "flop" as opposed to the butterfly or hybrid..lol. Anyway, I'm going to start trying your tips and see how it goes. Thanks again for your video!!!

    Nice job! I wish my knees would still let me play and properly learn butterfly. It was unheard of back when I played 25+ years ago. The one thing that I'll never get is how today's goalies can almost block the entire lower portion of the net (basically parallel to the goal line) with their pads in the butterfly. I'm not sure my hips, legs, knees and ankles would ever allow me to do that even if they were healthy.

    This randomly popped up in my feed, but are you a Staten Islander by chance, man? I'm 34 and haven't been on the ice since college (2004 or so). Just geared up for the first time since then- something has had me aching to get back in the net before I get too old or my back gets even more broken- but I am terrified of trying out all these new tendy moves for the first time. The game's changed a lot since my day and that may be no more evident than how being a keeper has evolved...along with the equipment. Cool video-- was just curious where you're located since the background here looks like the textbook Staten Island public school/burbs combo.

    Chris love the video, it's helped me a lot. Question, do you use the back of the skate blade to push or the toe of the blade.

      Use the toe. Most goalie coaches say the best is to use the first 2/3 of the blade (2/3 from the toe). If you need a quick slide just use the toe.

    Awesome vid man. Same deal with me, I'm 30 and playing again, but when I was 11-14 played goal and butterfly wasn't a thing. Do you recommend any stretches? Not only can I not slide yet, my butterfly is atrocious right now, like I can't really flair so I have adapted to 90 degree pad spread left or right if that makes sense. I play just for fun and my health, but still I'd like to get better and better.

    The formal name of these movements are called "knees to knees", and can move from knees to feet and or back to knees to knees.

    Best way to load your leg is to literally kick out (forward) the leg you will be pushing with. Itll automatically set you up and you'll get a good bite when you push. Plus it gives you a better angle to make the next save.

      \/\/QLF F/\M try to lift your pushing leg more, your goalie skates might have bigger plastic on then (especially if they are older) and when you hit that plastic on the ice it will slip out from under you. Just keep trying to get the push leg up higher in front of you

    I noticed that itʻs good to subtly lift the weight off my sliding leg a split second before I throw it out....so itʻs kinda FREE to shoot out before placing weight back down across both legs.
    So itʻs LOAD push leg/brace skate, lift weight off sliding leg slightly, PUSH and then SLIDE. Itʻs very subtly...happens quickly & subconsciously when I do it right.
    Without taking the weight off, it feels clumsy & harder, and my upper body can end up moving faster than my pads >:(
    Maybe itʻs cuz I have junk Reactor 5kʻs, am overweight & 40+ years old though ;)

    Will increasing the thigh rise help close the 5 hole? I feel my butterfly is similarly as wide as yours but I still have an opening in the 5 hole....HELP please!

      Mark B yeah it will definitely help but if you have a decently wide bfly you should be able to close it regardless of your thigh rise. Going bigger will help as will getting a pad that has more of a pre-curve. Also the problem with bigger thigh rise is you lose mobility. More specifically it increases the chance you pad interference. Basically the top of your pads hit off of each other when you're in your stance. Doesn't always happen but just something that can happen depending on the pad and your stance. Also loosening your toe ties helps a ton. It moves the pad of your skate. So when down in a bfly your boot goes out but your thigh tends to go in. Dont crank your bottom straps either....

      Medium to snug throughout but that's with an all elastic stepping setup which is the best way to go imo. I actually go a little bit snugger up top which some old school guys may think is opposite but with these modern bfly pads freeing up the ankle really allows me to widen my bfly and then by keeping the top elastic a little snugger the pad doesn't feel like its flopping all around around whe ik doing really fast movements

    Lmao, I watched this video a long time ago and it’s funny every time cause I do the opposite of everything he’s saying but when I teach younger kids, I show them a different way than him and I do it for 2 reasons, 1. I’m different and have my own special ways of doing everything 2. I play AAA and every other goalie plays somewhat like he’s teaching in the video but they aren’t good at the fundamentals of the game such as t-pushes, shuffles, butterfly slides and more, the people who are younger I teach all about the push leg, the push leg is all you have to worry about, if you put your push leg in the opposite direction you want to go, your in more control and yes you do turn if you loosen up but after practice you can control everything you do no matter the way your set up, and when you come across, if it’s a shot down low just flare your bad and do the spread eagle or lean into the shot and when you flare the pad, it’s on the shot so the pad can go back to the relaxed state, makes gameplay much easier

    Dude butterflying came out in the 60s. Not only was it a thing for a long time before you were a kid, but it was definitely not in its premature stages. I'm 30 and I know this.

      It came out but it wasn't the norm at all. It was just a technique too. It wasn't a style of playing yet. Back to the basement junior.

    i disagree with the flaring of the leg to lead your body i think you should lead with your hands by leaning the direction you want and it will increase your momentum plus it keeps your hands in front of you bc when you get into rotation with pushes leaning back can happen which messes you up, overall i think you should lead all of your goalie movements with your hands first
