      Break a leg! I directed Freaky Friday a few years ago and it is one of my favorite musical theatre memories. Katherine is such a unique character because you have to play her as this incredibly mature put together adult, and then as a frustrated teen stuck in an adult's body - such a challenging role, but so fun!

    Hey! My school is doing Wizard of Oz and I'm trying out for Dorothy, do you have any tips that I could keep in mind when auditioning that helped you pick your Dorothy? And also, I'm using Somewhere Over the Rainbow as my audition song, I have to cut the song down a bit, which parts do you think are most important? I love the videos, and thank you!

    • @cayleejo
      @cayleejo  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We saw SO many girls audition for Dorothy - ultimately this actor CARRIES the show, if you don't have a strong Dorothy your show will crumble, so we were looking for someone who had proven in the past that they could handle a lot of responsibility. From a vocal perspective Dorothy doesn't have the most difficult singing part in the show (the lion does), but she sings A LOT, so again, looking for someone who could have that stamina to last the entire show was important.
      From an acting perspective, this was very important, our Dorothy needed to come across as young and naïve, but also adventurous and eager. In some of the more emotional scenes it was very important that she could show us how important her relationships were to her - her family and friends and especially her dog meant the world to her, and when they were threatened you could feel her full concern and fight for their well-being surface. Also, Dorothy embodies fairness, whenever she is wronged by various characters throughout the story, the Wicked Witch, the Doorman, the Wizard, she gets a bit of temper because in her world fairness is incredibly important. I say all of this because during callbacks a lot of our actresses would either lean into the childishness/whiny parts of the character and they were losing the place those emotions come from, making their performances flat. But, when our actress who ultimately earned Dorothy came up her scenes there was depth in every word and action - when she scolded the lion for being rude to Toto she was shaking from fear but her voice held strong because Toto was the most important thing in the world to her and she would do anything to protect him. Explore the reasons behind Dorothy's emotions and you will shine as someone who really understands the character and makes her complex instead of a surface level whiny ingenue.
      For SOTR I would focus on the later half of the song, the lemon drops/chimney tops portion. Her emotion build as the song progresses with her desire to leave her simple life and experience adventure increasing as she sings - if you can jump straight into that emotion, that innocent desire to go on an adventure, I think the last half of the song will serve you better - it is also slightly more vocally challenging, so you can really show off your singing with that portion!

    • @cayleejo
      @cayleejo  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      This is a great question! I think you have a couple choices here in terms of song selection. Directors are great at visualizing you in a variety of roles, regardless of the song that you sing, but it’s nice to nudge them in the right direction all the same! You could choose a male song and transpose it to your vocal range or you could choose a song from a male character that is traditionally played by a female like Peter from Peter Pan. You can also simply sing a female song in your vocal range and knock it out of the park, but just be clear on what roles you’re interested in! Break a leg and let us know how it goes!
