RC Helicopters: How Do They Work?

  • Last week I put out a video that explained what we do with RC Helicopters. That video managed to break out of our inner circle of RC Heli diehards and found its way into the feeds of many who were seeing helis for the first time. The general reaction was really positive! Some disbelief, some doubt, but one thing I saw was many many people questioning how we can go upside down and in general how they work.
    Well... here is the HOW of RC Helicopters. This video shows how the RC helis fly the way they do. How do they go upside down? How does the pilot control it? What kind of equipment is used? Check it out!

    Ever since your video on how to get started with RC helicopters. I've purchased the Blade 70s on October. I love the little RC Heli and I got the controls down and I'm ready to move up to the other models you showed in that video, but sadly don't have the budget to do so. Still, I have you to thank for introducing me to this hobby.

      Thank you! Stories like this are the reason I do it! Best of luck with your heli addiction! :P

    Good explanation, very informative when youre in a pinch to learn something in a very short frame of time. I have a drone but heli seems more silent and agile, i can see it can stop faster with swash plate mechanism.. which can do a reverse thrust.

    • @suaijmzajdhg3757
      @suaijmzajdhg3757 ปีที่แล้ว

      In drones i have to literally flip it, in order to achieve reverse thrust which makes my stopping distance longer.

    10 years of flying?? Flight simulator as well? Thanks man, and great video. Just picked up my first heli after years of flying planes. Went with the Horizon Hobby 230 S V2, should be fun!
    Thanks again!

    Excellent video Bobby, I've been flying for quite a few years now but I must admit I really enjoyed the video, very informative, there are so many people out there who never even knew such a thing even existed, so much so that some people who see it for the first time think the flight is photo shopped, of coarse seasoned pilots know it's real, oh and Bobby just to clarify the world is Flat brother...

    I think this is only the second video I've seen of anyone actually explaining how 3d helis even work. Bert did one with the science channel I think some years ago. Nice dude!

    Hello , I'm new to Helicopters . I have a 450 SE . My question is the top or large gear spins as it should but the smaller bottom gear witch is the main drive gear doesn't spin at all . Have I forgot part of the Radio commands?. Thanks , Bobby M.

    Greetings, I was wondering if the gyroscopic effect present in real helicopters is negligible in RC ones, this question popped in my head when you showed how the swash plate moves when you use the right control stick

    • @antonioiaconianni1619
      @antonioiaconianni1619 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, I was completely wrong, I just noticed that there is a 90 degrees angle between the position of the control rod of each blade and the blade itself, I will leave the comment in case it can be useful, if you think otherwise let me know and I will delete both of them

    Nice explanation! But i have a question, and it may sound stupid. I have a kit helicopter, and i can't obtain the gyro, as it quite difficult to get one where i live. Can i use RC car gyro (usually installed in drift car) for the tail rotor? As i think it's work in the same principle to counteract any drift

    • @BobbyWatts
      @BobbyWatts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey I think you could try that but it would eventually be very frustrating. It would be in your best interest to use a helicopter dedicated gyro. Helis are hard enough even with the proper gear :)

    • @trexinvert
      @trexinvert 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Head holding gyro's were proven and perfected from rc heli technology more than ten years ago then applied to other things like airplanes and cars. Check the car gyro specs for response time and matching servo requirements. Most modern rc helis all have 3 axis gyro's, but you can still fly with mechanical flybar "+ tail rudder gyro. However, this is not for beginners and a 450 size carbon fiber blade at over 2000 rpm's is a lethal. This hobby is very dangerous and you must respect everything about these machines, battery, control systems, where you fly and your honest skill level. You build and program the helicopter exactly as specified. You do not experiment or hover in your apartment room. Geeze, no wonder this hobby lost popularity.

      @wibbyarief8958 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@trexinvert Thanks for the info and advice mate. I think it's true that rc helicopter lost popularity. A friend of mine used to fly rc helis are now flying quads, as he says it's safer not having 60cm blades running in front of his face, and quad's parts are easier to get. I just bought K-Bar gyro recently. Still waiting for delivery though. Peace✌️

      The fact that you are asking questions and seeking answers gives me hope that this hobby will continue. Flying, Programming and building/repairing is not easy but very satisfying when you learn to do it right. Just to be able to control a tail-in hover is an accomplishment. Then you learn all 4 directions(tail, nose, side, other side). Then you learn to "move" in all 4 directions. Then you learn to hover "inverted" tail-in. Then hover invert all directions. Then learn to "move" in all 4 inverted directions. It's called learning the basics and mastering every orientation. Yes, it is very regimented. Bobby Watts and any advanced pilot will agree that's exactly what you have to do. So, when flying (at least reasonable speed/altitude) you have no "blind spot" where your mind freezes and you don't know what to do. Keep in mind, it takes hundreds of hours on a serious computer simulator(realflight, phoenix,....not a cheap mobile device, but something that connects to a real rc heli transmitter) to get to this point. In addition, to "testing yourself" field flying and crashing. However, I think you being a pilot of a real plane should be no problem. Keep on.

    If a helicopter have not its tail rotor, it will rotate in the opposite direction of the main rotor. How can your rc helicopter control it?

    Wow I thought this hobby was dead. Everyone flying drones.
    10 years ago anybody who wanted to get into the hobby did 3 things:
    1.) Built a helicopter from kit(including avionics and tx programming)
    2.) Practiced hovering, orientation and all tricks(especially invert and 3D) on a simulator for XXX hrs before crashing on field.
    3.) Internet research to get instructions, fix problems or upgrade(usually helifreaks.com....courtesy of Bob White)
    10 years later(now). There is still no short cuts. What's a drone? Not an RC heli.
    So you still need to do all 3 of those things.
    It's just an issue of "motivating" the new gen to do all this.
