You’re welcome, it’s all about practice. Lots of it! Lol but when you take your time and work through the boring stuff it will make you a much better better pilot in the long run.
It really is! I know that’s what helped me progress so far was going all the way back to the beginning and starting over after I took a hiatus from the helicopter side.
Two weeks ago I got Real Flight. Sims really help. I was looking for something else on your channel, but I can't believe I missed this. This is friggin awesome! Much love.
Haven't flown an RC heli in 15 years, and that was a fixed pitch Dragonfly. Recently bought a scale electric 500 size. My sim time is huge hours at this stage. (I fly heli's mode 2 but fixed wing mode 1... weird but works for me lol) Never thought of doing the 4 point hover but makes sense. Cheers for the tip!! Regarding the sim, I've found a 3d heli that is rather sensitive and have got to the stage where I can hover Tail in, in strong gusty winds, do figure 8's and circuits at various speeds. It's been quite a journey. No expo, and no dual rates. Going to start doing your drills Jeff, Huge thanks!!
Thank you! I’m glad the video was helpful. My whole goal is to get more people into the helicopter side of the hobby and try and spread my knowledge that I have learned it this far.
Thx jeff, great video. What a coincidence. I am exactly at this stage of flying right now. Bought an almost new trex 470 and after cleaning the mechanics and setup this thing hovers like a dream. Had tame it down a little.

I use a switch just for expo. It helps a lot for learning new tricks. I learned this way and has helped me progress in 3D in the future and you will find out you still use the basics in harder 3D to help stabilize the moves
Every one like there helis and expo setup differently. I personally don’t use any expo on any model and like them super sensitive. The basics of flying will help in every 3D maneuver you do!
Great video. I think buying a cheap micro helicopter is great too. Always practice basics but when you get bored go out with the mini and try anything you want without worrying about crashing an expensive big heli.
Thank you for doing this video, I've been flying for a fair while now, came back to it after a 2 year hiatus. Trying to get back to basics and it's hard as I never learnt these basic moves. That's why I got frustrated with my flying by not progressing how I wanted. It's hard relearning these moves to get rid of bad habits.
You’re welcome! I’m glad the video was helpful. I did the exact same thing. When I first got into helicopters, I learned a hover and then rushed to try to learn 3-D. I was crashing all the time and got discouraged and quit flying helicopters for a while, then got back into. It still didn’t learn the right way kept crashing got back out of it when I got back into it the third time I went all the way back to the beginning and learned the way I am trying to teach it, and my progression happened so fast! Quit crashing. Every flight was better than better. Really crazy how many people including my self never learned the right way.
I can't thank you more than enough. You make more sense out there than most pilots. You are a great mentor and flight instructor. I really love your 4-point flight hover. That is helping me Alot. You also have good radio setting as far as the dual rates and exponential rates go that is also a big help.

Could I please ask a general advise question ? Coming back to RC heli’s after a 30yr break things have changed massively, Just the fact that it’s all electric now and what with ‘stabilisation’ and such like, I’m a bit out of my depth. I’m flying a Blade Fusion 360 Smart with an NX8 transmitter, which I setup exactly as per the book. All’s well in normal mode (Stability on) and my hovering manoeuvres are coming along nicely. I feel almost ready to venture off into a circuit, but when I go into Stunt 1 (with Stability off), as soon as the head speed comes up, the heli generally feels super-sensitive. I’ve reduced my rates slightly to 80% and introduced 30% expo in this mode and it still feels “sensitive” to me ! I’m considering turning Stability on for Stunt 1, (maybe just for a while), thinking that might give me that bit more confidence and get me into circuit flying again. Would you say that’s the wrong thing to do, would having Stability on in Stunt 1 be a no no, (just for general flying around obviously), or should I make sure me other adjustments, or maybe I should I just accepts that I need to get used to the sensitivity ? Thanks in advance ……… Carl
Thank you for subscribing! The easiest simulator is Real Flight. I would get the Real Flight with the remote as everything is already setup for you. There is better sims in my opinion like ACCURC or HeliX but you have to program your radio like a heli for the sim to work right. It can be a pain!
i thought with a flybarless controller the instructions say to use only pure curves and not to add expo...as we know the flybarless controller itself in its software menu can be used in basic or advanced or 3d mode and tamed down from there... interesting as you must have tried it and it must work....thats new to me! Would this work on all fbl controllers would you think?
I’ve played with a lot of different FBLs and setting. The reason they say not to use EXPO in the radio is because you can have EXPO in the FBL so it’s twice the EXPO. I like to do one or the other. So EXPO in the FBL or EXPO in the radio. The biggest thing you don’t want to do is the radio is trim it. That should always be done in the FBL.
Thanks Jeff! However, we need more beginner guides about the very basics. From all of R/C stuff there is a tone of information on cars ... but nothing on helis. It's almost impossible to learn how to set up a heli as a beginner from the internet or to learn how to fly, hover, etc. Congrats and keep posting!!! You're great.
Thank you, I will be doing more videos on this. I have a ton of setup videos for all different helis but I will be doing a FBL setup for beginners next.

I heard some people were saying that at low head speed heli is less stable and with high head speed it is easier to control. Is it true? Or it applies only to smaller sizes like 360 mm blades and below?
For me, it's true but as you said, mainly on small heli, bigger the heli goes, smaller is the difference, but on a raw 580, i see a bit more stability with high head speed than low head speed, but the main thing is to run a GOVERNOR ! It really help ! Way more stable with a locked RPM than a standard linear throttle curve :)
Yes, and no, that really all depends on the size of the helicopter. How you have the helicopter set up. On smaller machines yes, the higher, the head speed the more stable. The helicopter is to a degree. The main reason is you are spinning the rotor faster, creating more Lyft and the service can respond faster to the movement of the helicopter. But also a faster head speed can make the helicopter a lot more reactive.
@@westhobbiesrc8051 I see, thanks :) also i wanted to ask you some other question. What is better, high kv motor and big main gear or low kv motor and small main gear? Will high kv motor with big gear give same power or torque as lower kv motor with smaller gear? Or low kv powerful motor always will be winning in performance and lower power consumption?
@@cutefoxRC KV all depends on voltage. Can you go to a higher KV motor you go down in voltage. You have a targeted RPM that you really don’t want to exceed on every helicopter normally a high KV motor with a small pinion will still give you around the same RPM but your amperage is going to be a lot higher with less torque and everything is going to run hard, when you have a lower KV motor bigger, pinion more voltage, you will gain the same if not more RPM with a lot less amperage longer flight times and less heat with more torque.
@@westhobbiesrc8051 So, the higher voltage means more cells battery, means more weight, and with that extra weight it still will be more economic and longer flight than with less voltage battery with high KV motor which will make heli lighter?

Not gonna lie though when I was learning in 2010 hovering had me shaking and my knees weak , hell just the noise would get me weak in the legs lol. First time hovering my raptor 50 I tossed my transmitter at my buddy cause I froze up and couldn’t move my fingers
Jeff why higher expo as you go from normal up to flight 1 then flight 2? Is this because the higher head speeds make the helicopter more sensitive and therefore you need more expo to help tame it?
It’s all a personal preference on how much expo or how you want to set your expo. But yes, the higher, the head speed, the more reactive the helicopter is as you are spinning your rotor faster, which creates a faster, cyclic response and moving more air in the helicopter can be more sensitive. In the next episode on this series, we are going to go over FBL set up and how to tame the FBL down to be more beginner, friendly. On top of adding expo.
Hey Jeff! What gear are you using to record. GoPro? Headstrap? I want to start recording some of my real life practice sessions so I can better assess the reasons for my cr@shes.
Hello! Yes, a GoPro hero 8 and a head mount. You should! I record almost every flight and don’t always use every flight for videos but some times you crash or have issues and it’s always great to be able to go back and look. Or slow the video down frame by frame and see what happened!
I want to get a goosky s2, i have never used a helicopter. i mainly want to do boring fly arounds. not so much the 3d stunting. Would it be wise to get the S2? Again i just want boring simple flights to begin with
What low head speed were you running your 580 in this video? Can you program safe mode (bailout) in a HW esc like that is preprogramed in the Goosky S2 or RS4 pop version? I am looking at a 700 size heli as my next project. I hope that the new Goosky RS7 will have an option to purchase as a 6v version with different size pinion gears. I have been looking at the Sab Raw 700 Piuma and noticed there have been quite a few problems with low head speed vibrations on this bird. Simone took off the third member bearing and it completely cured her vibe=rations. I love that bird and since I would only be running 1100-1400 rpms, removing that third bearing should not have any effect on the structural/mechanical qualities of this heli? Always enjoy your videos. 🧙♂👍
You wouldn't program a bailout in your ESC, you would do it in your FBL. He flys almost always with an Ikon 2/MSH brain FBL. They're both the same thing even though they have different names. Kind of confusing I know, but that's besides the point. Speaking from experience, the bail out works very well on them so you could easily set up a bailout on your S7 with an IKON 2. Pretty sure he is running about 1600-1800 on his Raw 580 for the majority of this video. From the research I've gathered you would probably be better suited building a Tron Dnamic if you're looking at building a 700 machine that runs off 6S, and is optimized for low head speed. The Piuma is a great option as well, I personally haven't heard anything about the Piuma having a vibration issue, but that would also be a really good option for what you're wanting. I think the Goosky S7 and the OMP M7 are more built to compete with things like a RAW 700, Tron 7.0, Specter 700 and ETC. From what I can tell they're higher head speed 12S monster helis made for 3D and Acro flying. I'm not saying you shouldn't look into them. However I am under the impression that they are going to be taking a larger 4525-4535 motor, and those motors aren't intended to run off 6S typically. Again, like Jeff himself says, buy what heli makes you happy, but I don't know if the S7 would really offer what you're wanting. This is just speculation however and I could be wrong, we still don't know all the facts about this heli yet.
@@Lance57H Thank you for your detailed explanation. I appreciate that very much. It looks like the Piuma may be the one I may choose. I have seen several videos about the low head speed problem but their is a particualr video I saw on 6S 18t pinion that was most impressive.
In normal mode, which is what I am running in this video is 1400 RPM. Bail out/Rescue is all done inside the FBL unit and the ESC bail out is for auto rotations, giving you your instant power back to save yourself in a bad auto. But what you were talking about is Rescue, which is done inside the FBL. Now, the piuma is a fantastic Heli! I love mine, but I’m running 12s. Now I’ve built a few on 6s as well. Some piuma will get a vibration at super low head speed. And the main vibration is more of a harmonic vibration, throughout the air frame. Depending on the exact targeted number you are looking for, can depend on if you will get that vibration throughout the airframe. Sometimes just raising 50 RPM will solve it. The main reason I run 12s over 6s is for flight time amperage draw and overall power that I am going after. Removing the third bearing block did nothing in my testing and experiments. I’ve read other people say drilling holes in the dampeners to soften the head up helps a lot, but my personal piuma doesn’t really vibrate. But I also don’t run that low of rpm my lowest is 1350. The Tron dynamic is supposed to be really good at Low Head speed, but I don’t have any personal experience with one to comment on that. The new S7 is going to be more geared towards the hard smack 3-D but! Any helicopter can be set up to your flying style, regardless what they intend it for. I can take my regular RAW 700 and run 6s and low head speed if I wanted but when they are designed to run as a lightweight set up, they have a smaller head smaller main frames, smaller Tail Boom diameter to try to save as much weight as possible. If you are after a 6s 700 then definitely the Piuma or Tron dynamic.
@@roberthardy7868 Solid choice, but I think before you set your mind though on the Piuma you should look up Ben Storick and see what he has been able to do with the Tron Dnamic on a 6S setup. I have his exact electronic setup on my Nimbus 550 that is now a 650 (minus the FBL because I run IKON, and not Futaba). The Xnova 4025 with the Hobbywing 150 is amazing for 6S. You could run that same setup in the Piuma as well. It's just what you whatever you want to do. I will say that SAB helis are easier to build. I wouldn't sleep on the Dnamic though. If I didn't build my Nimbus 650, I would defiantly go with the Dnamic.
@@Lance57H Thanks again Lance. I did look at the video of Ben Storick flying the Tron Dynamic and was blown away. Ben is such a talented flyer he could fly a brick and make it look good. The small amount of research I did on this heli indicated that the instruction manuals are not even close to the SAB. I have only built an Align 450 and the RS4 and never had a problem with them. If Jeff were to do a video on the Tron Dynamic, then I would probably reconsider the option more seriously.. I probably could build it but would feel more comfortable seeing a build video of this particular heli. I see that HD has a sale on this heli as a complete package: however, it only has a HW 130amp esc and whichever way I decide to go, it must and will have a HW 150 amp esc. I also plan to go with the v-bar evo if they ever get them back in stock. I want to fly internal gov so I can set the head speeds plus all the other wonder features of this radio that my DX6 2nd generation cannot do. If you know of any build videos on the Dynamic, please let me know. Thanks again for all your information and help. I found it very useful.
Not many people say that RC helicopters are just not for everyone. I have seen some people treat a sim as a video game and never really care or be serious. Also crashing if you're not so good at repair really turns some people off. Also I know im a bit different on different days so to me it's no longer hard to do the basics. But I can't say timing moves like tic tocs are easy for me.
Helicopters are not for everyone, but! I think they can be. It’s all a drive and determination. It also depends on what your goals are your flying styles and what you want to accomplish. If you want to just learn how to fly around and do the basic flying never plan on going inverted or any 3-D that I think anybody and everybody can fly a helicopter. Some maneuvers are harder for some people. Piro flips is one I’ve almost got mastered, but I’ve been practicing them for almost a year! Nothing else has challenged me more than they have.
That is 100% the truth. These fundamentals build everything in flying. And anytime you get into trouble no matter what orientation the model is in you can always save it. Because you know exactly what to do.
Overall good generic info. Two comments. One I think you don’t need to reinvent the wheel. RC Helicopter Richard (I think that’s his channel name) has an excellent series covering the different levels of the RCHN Pilot Proficiency Program which is based off the IRCHA program. It covers all maneuvers from hovers to 3D. The progression has been tested by pilots and I think is a good reference. Second the “Borientations” is a term I first heard from Matt Botos. I think he came up with that. Of course Borientations from Boring and Botos make sense. Finally what would be a great video is going through all the radio programming concepts. You touched on expo but not much else. That would be very valuable as it takes the voodoo out of setting up a radio to suit a pilots specific preference.
I personally liked this video a lot as someone still trying to master the hobby. It gave a lot of info out in a way that isn't horrendously boring like that channel you are talking about. Also gave some really good exercises to start out with as well. That channel you are referring to is still good to learn from, but this video will give someone new to the hobby a pathway to follow in a much faster way.
Thinking like that can go both ways. Why make any videos? There has been helicopter videos for a long time. Why did you make a learning to fly video when there’s already learning to fly videos out there? Personally, I have never heard of that guy or seen any of his videos. Why record build videos when other people do build videos? Why post a maiden flight video on a helicopter that there’s already a medium flight video? See what I’m saying. Matt did not come up with that phrase lol that phrase has been around since the 70s. It has nothing to do with his last name. It Has to do with it being boring to practice orientations.
@@scottmurphy650 welcome to the heli side of the hobby! Best side! So it depends on what helicopter you got? If it’s GPS then yes, it will be very easy learning curve. If you bought a non GPS then it will be different but you have the basic idea on the controls.
@@westhobbiesrc8051 The Eachine E190 UH-1 I got does not have GPS but it does have optical flow for hover. I often fly my Potensic Dreamer 4K drone in the altitude mode, which disables the GPS.
Excellent video. i found it after i learned this..but, either way.. i didnt have a hard time going from 3d plane moderate ability, to flying a helicopter basic. i dont think other 3d pilots will have a hard time learning how to fly a copter. the main difference i found it to remember to push forward (input down elevator for planes) after pulling back on the stick to gain altitude) in a turn, or else youll fall to the side in an aft position and crash) and if necessary use throttle to get you altitude. Turning uses energy so compensate with a little throttle. If youve been using rudder and throttle control on airplanes , this will be a breeze. No you wont be an expert, but flying a helicopter wont be a mystery . For example, when you fly a plane, to turn, bank with aileron..same with helicopter and follow it with same input on rudder to stay coordinated. Here is the part that gets plane pilots in trouble..by pulling back on the stick, the helicopter will eventually want to fly backwards...and so you have to correct for roll with aileron, and push the stick FORWARD..then you will see it behaves exactly like an airplane. If you have a sim, scale up the model to 150 percent so you can see what the tail is doing. Also, watch the NOSE of the helicopter to determine left and right input for both going away and coming toward... im a beginner heli pilot..but life long rc planes...and i cant fathom 3d ..but flying a circuit is simple with a small amount of practice..if you already are used to throttle and rudder inputs.
I know extremely good plane 3D pilots that can’t hover a heli. If you never flown a helicopter it’s a whole different story then a plane. Everything is backwards.I don’t think I’ve ever seen a plane guy pick up a heli and say that’s not much different. Orientation is what gets them every time.
We need more intermediate/expert rc heli people to make "build/repair" videos like Bob White(helifreaks) did during the golden age of heli's(2006-2013...or when IRCHA hit top membership). The new generation of pilots, seniors taking up heli and converted drone pilots really need to learn how to properly "build, program and repair" their helicopters. It's guaranteed every newbie will go through process of "weekly" if not "daily" crashes. Beginners cannot rely on RTF helicopters even with "panic switch" to learn to fly. They will crash and when they do it will be better to just throw it away and buy a new one. If you don't have the absolute knowledge of how every part works, assembles and operates you will have a very dangerous machine that can seriously maim or kill you.
So this video says learn how to fly your helicopter back to the basics as a beginner. I'm thinking okay hell yes this is the one. Then you start talking about expo and ailerons and switch one and switch two and inverse reactive current to the secondary solenoids for the 3P optical actuators. I have no clue what the hell that even means my bro😂 So, is there like a real beginner beginner beginner video?
Thank you from a 60 year old new pilot!

You’re welcome! Unfortunately, the school of hard knocks can be expensive lol I wish I would’ve known everything. I know now when I started! Could’ve saved so much money, but then again, would not have paid the light bill at the hobby shop lol
You're a one hell of a trainer, keep up the good work 👏

Thanks for showing the basic manoevers to practise...practise....and....practise!!! I'll start doing them on my sim today.
You’re welcome, it’s all about practice. Lots of it! Lol but when you take your time and work through the boring stuff it will make you a much better better pilot in the long run.
Sometimes it's good to go back to basics great video as always THANKS.
Much love.
Thank you very much! I greatly appreciate it. I’m glad the video was helpful! My next one will be with stick movements to help explain it.
Haven't flown an RC heli in 15 years, and that was a fixed pitch Dragonfly. Recently bought a scale electric 500 size. My sim time is huge hours at this stage. (I fly heli's mode 2 but fixed wing mode 1... weird but works for me lol)
Never thought of doing the 4 point hover but makes sense.
Jeff, thank you so much for this video! Extremely helpful video as a newbie with expensive toys. Your a great pilot and a great guy. Thanks again.
Thank you! I appreciate that. They are definitely expensive!
Another great video Jeff thank you we need more beginner set up and run videos like this keep them coming thanks again
Thank you! There will definitely be more to come!
Incredibly helpfull video Jeff, really helps people new to the hobby who are learning and building a new skill set. Thanks !
Thank you! I’m glad the video was helpful. My whole goal is to get more people into the helicopter side of the hobby and try and spread my knowledge that I have learned it this far.
Thanks your lesson is very fantastic. l,m flying proper now not just hovering in a corner

Thank you! I’m glad the video helped you! You got this! Great job!
Thanks Jeff, refresher and starter help for alot of us.

Thx jeff, great video. What a coincidence. I am exactly at this stage of flying right now. Bought an almost new trex 470 and after cleaning the mechanics and setup this thing hovers like a dream. Had tame it down a little.
Thank you! That’s awesome! Keep practicing! I’m glad the 470 flys like a dream! It’s a great heli!

This really helps me! Thanx Jeff!

Thank you from a brand new pilot
Thank you for watching!
I really needed this. Thank you Jeff. As always another great video.

Great video. I think buying a cheap micro helicopter is great too. Always practice basics but when you get bored go out with the mini and try anything you want without worrying about crashing an expensive big heli.
Thanks for this video. I can recommend that you don't try to rush ahead to the next step. Don't ask me how I know but I am on my second M1 😁
You’re welcome! Yes! Don’t rush ahead and learn the basics, it will save you a ton of money!
That is helping me
Alot. You also have good radio setting as far as the dual rates and exponential rates go that is also a big help.
Another fantastic video❤

What is your favorite RC simulator? Anything better than AccuRC? I prefer AccuRC over RF9.5, feels more realistic. Thanks!
I personally use ACCURC, it’s a a great simulator and flys the most realistic out of the ones I’ve tired. I’ve also heard HeliX is good too!
Could I please ask a general advise question ?
Coming back to RC heli’s after a 30yr break things have changed massively,
Just the fact that it’s all electric now and what with ‘stabilisation’ and such like, I’m a bit out of my depth.
Great video Jeff! Thank you for the help! Keep up the great work!
you mentioned a simulator, if you can to make the singular choice, on one, what sim would you go with? New sub here, thanks.
Im just hustling around my 420… when is the good time to step on to the 580? Should I take the pitch or swing for it asap?
What does high head speed vs low head speed do?
@@ibrahimdeniz7308 more Rotor RPM. When learned you want to lower the head speed for longer flight times and less responsive heli. More RPM (head speed) the faster and more responsive the heli is.
@westhobbiesrc8051 i guessing thats what the collective is for? When head speed is high, collective is closer to "zero"?

You’re welcome! Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed the video.
@@westhobbiesrc8051 awesome looking forward to it. I'm guessing the FBL method would be superior over adding transmitter expo right?
@@LichaelMewis yes definitely! Mainly because you can tune and adjust things like rotation rate, dead band and so on.

Thank you! I greatly appreciate it.
Thank you for this you got a new sub

Thank you for watching!
When you get in trouble, those fundamentals are what you'll end up falling back on and it will mean the difference between crashing or not.
Is there even anythying other than basics?!
xD
Everything else is either an iteration or a transition, right?! ;;P
cheers, man. loving your videos
When I started R/C it was CCPM helis and I did practice the basics. Got to where you do a U-turn like on a half-pipe and then FPV drones arrived... ^^
Just purchased my first RC chopper. I have been flying drones for several years, so the learning curve should be short.
If youve been using rudder and throttle control on
airplanes , this will be a breeze.
Made THE huge mistake as a trainer....straight into 'expo' without explaining it and showing the changes. The remainder of the lesson was good info.
Irregardless of how well (or how bad: me🤷♂️. Not had a heli in a few years. So🤦♀️🤪), u absolutely MUST come into a hover to take off AND land.
Oh no. I'm learning again.
It’s always good to learn! We never know everything!
PIRO FLIPS!!!!!!
I’ve almost got them mastered!
So this video says learn how to fly your helicopter back to the basics as a beginner. I'm thinking okay hell yes this is the one. Then you start talking about expo and ailerons and switch one and switch two and inverse reactive current to the secondary solenoids for the 3P optical actuators. I have no clue what the hell that even means my bro😂
So, is there like a real beginner beginner beginner video?
