I'm a 26 yesr old electrician but I can't help but support each and every hard working trade! Clearly this is your passion and just the fact that you will teach others is truly admorable. Thank you for teaching the youth!

    This is a masterclass of how to paint trim. I followed the technique of “working the paint”. I applied more paint than I otherwise would have. My trim looks like it was sprayed. Thank you! (I also used the M1 extender. What a difference)

  • @shaynesabala

    I have 3 sprayers (one is down right now) and my go to is a HVLP set up. I can spray like glass but there’s a lot to setting it up and cleaning it when you’re done so the job needs to be worth the time. I built baseboards for my daughter’s room and went to brush it, what a disaster. I remembered that I had some Floetron so I added it to the paint and what a difference. I didn’t add enough but it still came out 100 times better. I only did one board before running out of time. Tomorrow I’ll add more, sand down the awful paint job and do it again. It’s never going to be as good as spraying with my HPLV sprayer but it’s good enough.

    thank you so much! painted my trim using the additive, it was magic! took me a while to figure out the right amount of additive, and the first coat felt disappointing, still dragging and sticky with visible brushstroke marks. but the second coat was pure magic, it flew smoothly over the 1st coat like butter and just melted, I ended up with glass-like smooth trim surface (semi-gloss paint). You've upped my diy paint game tremendously!

    I just painted my fireplace surround and bookcase and it looks awful. It's streaky, there's roping, the paint went under the painters tape and onto the wall and the wood stain is coming through on the crown even though I primed it first. I'm going to sand everything really good and then repaint it. I'm going to buy an oil based primer for the crown, a semi-gloss white paint instead of the high gloss that I was using, a really good brush and some Floetrol. It has to turn out better than what I just did because it's so embarrassing that I don't want anyone coming over and seeing it.

    • @rogerdeschenes6749

      I actually like a expertly applied hand finish. Very hard to achieve and time consuming. Spraying is faster. Easier to master. No question. Many prefer the “look” of spraying. Often more cost effective than brushing. And I do spray. But spraying looks too “plastic” for me

    • @cupdejello
      @cupdejello 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roger Deschenes isn’t prep time longer for spray finish? And a little more costly? I’m asking as a layperson.

    • @rogerdeschenes6749
      @rogerdeschenes6749 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      GrandBizkit yes there is more prep time and covering
      But if you’re doing multiple coats on a lot of surfaces spraying is in many cases still so much faster it’s more cost effective. It takes about 5-10 minutes to brush out a door for a professional painter. That same painter will take 30 seconds to a minute to spray a door
      In some cases , as in occupied home all the covering and taping might not be practical and brushing may work better
      Spraying well takes a fair bit of practice and if done poorly or without proper prep and covering, disaster may result. Also, sprayers can be pretty temperamental. And you gotta get the paint and pressure “just so”
      I’m not sure how a diy-er would get that practice
      But a skilled painter with a sprayer is probably 5 times faster with a sprayer
      That still doesn’t stop me from preferring expertly applied brushed finish to trim. It’s a warmer more evocative look and feel.

      Spray paint process requires a much higher skill, an art if you will, as it takes years to master. Its messy, takes more time on rework for a newbie.

      Roger Deschenes I’ll stick to brushwork as most of the times I have to paint there is usually a considerable amount of furniture to contend with. I also love using my Purdy brushes as I made an investment in buying the brushes that aren’t the throw away dollar store special and love the finish I get out of them. I will never ever lend out my 3 inch chip to anyone not even my own brother.

  • @rogerdeschenes6749
    @rogerdeschenes6749 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Watched this one again. Spencer’s is a very good painter/paper-er. Takes his craft seriously. Good at explaining. The M1 extender works well. That clear caulk tip is a good one. I’d suggest Penetrol in oil-based as an extender over thinner. I suggest to Spencer the arrow worthy finultra angled or flat sash. (Not as big as that four inch, Spencer likes) but the brushes have a longer bristle (like purdy pro extra). And hold quite a bit of paint. Good for maintaining that wet age. It’s firm enough to maintain good control and clean lines. But not so firm that it “rakes” Also it’s noticeably flagged and the trim brushes are set in a chisel formation. I’ve seen a couple of Spencer’s clips and it seems he likes square-cut wall type brushes even on trim. I’d be interested to learn what Spencer thinks of the arroworthy finultra. I’ve had great success

    Excellent attention to detail. Amazing tip! Question: Would the paint extender help lap marks melt together better when rolling a wall? I've found that with a lot of the "quick drying" paints that you need to go relatively heavy and wet to get a good "melt" between adjacent laps -- especially on very tall walls with the final pull. Thanks!

    No idea this stuff existed. Always just used water, which just makes the paint less opaque and run more. In the UK acrylic and latex paints have been less popular than solvent based, I think due to the hideous brush lines you get with the stuff. But then with solvent, you get the yellowing instead after 12 months which looks almost as bad. I've literally just bought some extender after watching this (different brand, can't get M-1 easily here) and am looking forward to trying it out. Thanks for sharing!

    • @spencercolgan

      It’s a great question and depending on the extender that you use, the ratio is right on the directions for use. With oil based paint, I will send it out according to how it feels… A couple of ounces in a 1 gallon can of oil based paint.

The wife and I, well, (Me) are putting up peel and stick wall paper, (I left you a message on that video you posted) and I feel that I also need to post comment on this one as well. After we ( I ) complete that task, I need to paint a molding that's going across the same wall as the peel and stick, so this video was also very helpful, so thank you again my friend.

  • @meme-du8xj
    @meme-du8xj ปีที่แล้ว

    You wouldn't believe how many painters/customers in the hardware store have no idea what paint extender is for or what it is. And when I explained they say they don't do that.
    Update:
    I used the M-1 and a brand new Purdy brush and even with a light hand i still have brush strokes.
    I even tried using the "dry roller" method I saw in some other videos on another patch to see if that would give a smooth finish and got a hammered/foam roller look as a finish.
    Pretty very disappointed.
    Maybe it's the paint brand?
    I used Valspar Furniture and Cabinet on a desk.

  • @mcraesps1460
    @mcraesps1460 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The primary difference between thinning water base paint with water or an extender is how they each effect the paint they are added too.
    Water is 100% evaporative whereas extender is not. Results is the extender permits a longer drying time, fewer brush marks and more even application of coating. Paint extended with water causes paint surface to dry too thin.
