Does look like the old Anderson windows the exact ones I just repainted myself. Too bad this video wasn’t around about a month ago I spent a fortune on different primers, including Kills. The only one that I could get to not show a. “bleed through was BIN. that stuff works amazing. Thanks for the video.
I’ve been wanting to paint out the dark wood on my stairs baseboards and banister. This is such a great explanation on how to go from stained wood to painted. Thanks so much I feel ready to tackle my paint project now.
Hey, great video. Fellow painter of 22 years here. This is perfect for home DIYers etc but just a few things to save you some time and money. The degloss and sanding serve the same paper, so you don't really need to do both. And BIN is overkill for 99 percent of applications. I use Zinsser Conversation and never have failure or bleed through
if I was to use the degloss are you saying there is no need to sand? I'm asking because I want to paint the wood window trim, base boards, kitchen cabinets, and door but, I'm afraid of bleed through. Also, I plan to do these projects myself and don't want to fail. Please send feedback. Thanks
@@vinylxpressionz3479 yes deglossing is meant to make it adhere better. Get a good stain blocking primer after deglossing, like zinsser coverstain and then top coat with a trim paint and you'll be fine.
Very nice! I’m currently redoing some paint over stained window frames for a customer (and friend) that was done by an amateur painter. This was exactly the information I needed. Nice cutting! 👍
THANK YOU I've been wanting to repaint all my varnished interior doors and have been through many paints and primers and still have the knots showing through. I will be trying the zinsser bin in the coming days to see if it will work better. I like the tips on the paint and also the krud kutter. I didn't think of using a degreaser but i will definitely give it a shot. I'll reply once i try all yours tips out!
I painted over a stained wood interior door using a paint for Cabinets and Doors. The paint was advertised as having primer in it. I sanded, and then painted two coats. It came out horrible. The door was a 6 panel door. Within a couple of months, the panels separated at the panel and panel center. The dogs were able to scratch through the paint. The step I did not do was the stripper or the No Gloss. With future doors, I will buy a vinyl door that is already white. I am currently doing windows exactly as you show in this video. I will follow the steps you did! Thanks for posting this video!
Old Guy's Rock paint and primer ain't any good for painting over stain you need a good quality primer and 2 coats of paint the only thing paint and primer together is good for us painting over dark colors

Also on another note do you have to or recommend some sort of clear coat or whatever to protect the painted wood from getting nicked and chipped off so easily without discoloration or whatever? thanks in advance
The walls were the last thing to be painted in this room and were completed after this video was taken. Which is why the ceiling cut line isn't clean in this video.
Hi Antonio, We actually have a video showing how to paint cainets th-cam.com/video/a1cU1uMAu_A/w-d-xo.html Depending on what color you paint your cabinets, you may need additional coats, but there shouldn't be any problem painting them.
Wish you did more detail on the KrudCutter part. I always wonder if I’m using too much and how long to linger on an area. You only had the sped up video.
Hello! You will want to get a rag pretty well saturated, wipe off the trim you will be painting. Let it sit for 2-5 minutes to let the Krud Kutter break down the grease and grime, then take a wet rag to wipe off any Krud Kutter, and finish with a dry rag.
Thank you for the video! I followed all these steps and after the first coat of Ben Moore advanced I am seeing yellowing coming through 😮, what might be wrong? Sanded (120 grit), Krud Kutter, filled holes with wood filler, sanded those spots, wiped down again, primed with Bin 123, one coast of Ben moore’s advanced. Yellowing coming through. Help!! Do you need to do two coats of primer sometimes? Will the second coast of advanced fix it?
Did you use oil based primer?? I'm guessing not and that is your problem. You should use oil based primer over stained wood and then you can paint with latex over that when it's fully cured.
This video is awesome as I myself is seriously contemplating painting my window. It looks very much similar to the one you just did. Would you please let me know what type / brand of paint you used? I think you said the name “ Advance”but not sure if that’s the right or not. Thanks for a great detailed video on painting window trim!
spraying and brushing will leave two different textures to the paint. If you want an uniformed coating without brush marks then spraying is the way to go!
Great video! I was wondering what you'd suggest for changing the stain color of honey oak trim? I want it a lighter, more natural color with a stain or a top coat only but not paint.
Hi Beverly, great question! To refinish wood trim, you need to start by stripping off the old finish. Since stain penetrates into the wood, it can be quite labor intensive to completely strip it down to bare wood and start fresh. Are you thinking of taking on this project yourself or hiring someone to do the work?
@@TribblePaintingCompany wow, thanks for answering my question. I would do it myself. Getting the floors done today. Already took up carpet, put down white oak and its being finished with Bona IntenseSeal. So far, the floor color looks good with the original trim work and also with the honey oak kitchen cabinets. Might not have to change to color of the trim. If I have to, I'll know what to do. Thanks so much for your input!!!! God bless you.
Thanks for the video, I’m trying to paint my stairs and railings that were stained a light tan and the primer I got per the paint store recommendation is coming on blotchy with the roller but looks good with a brush. I’ve used a Purdy 1/4” nap and a 3/8” nap from Ace, any tips would be helpful!
@@TribblePaintingCompany Thanks for the reply! It coalesces into many small beads just a few millimeters across, I sanded the area significantly and tried using an oil based primer as well.
Great video! Do you ever recommend doing a light sanding after the BIN Primer coat? I am just starting to paint my trim throughout my house. I'm also using BIN primer, but using SW Emerald Eurathane. In regards to BIN primer, I was surprised to how thin/watery it is. It seemed like when I brushed it on, it went on really thin. But when using a small roller, it went on a little more liberally. Thanks!
Dan run your hand over the trim after the primer dries. If you can feel a lot of particles in the finish of the primer, a quick scuff sand will smooth those out.
Wow, you were able to get all that overpaint off of the wall afterwards? Trim paint must clean off a ton easier or something. Last time I painted trim, I used normal latex paint, and it was such a pain to clean up mistakes.
We also painted the entire room. Weston was cool enough to slow down a bit and walk the camera through the process to make this video. We did have a few marks on the window handles, but we took care of that, of course.
How long are you letting the primer and paint dry before the next coat? I used a paint and primer in one on my dark trims and sanded beforehand but it looks like I need to do 3 or 4 coats.
I've got a HOUSE FULL of stained/sealed trim. LOTS of it. Crown, 2-piece trim on all doors/cased openings, 6" baseboards. It's overwhelming to even think about starting a project where we need to "prep" the stained/sealed semi-gloss trim to paint AND paint all the walls... Do I REALLY need to sand the trim before the SW Extreme Bond Primer? This trim is ALL detailed - no flat parts.
@ depends on the quality your going for. Technically you don’t have to sand it before primer, however your finished product will turn out better.. don’t skip sanding the door jams and doors before primer and after primer. As a professional painter this is a MUST
What are you doing? throw that Advanced garbage away and get the shellac BIN. No sanding needed, no deglosser needed and no tannen bleed. your first 3 steps are a waste of time and money.
Lol you still sand before using bin and you sand after bin. That's half of that's great about bin is how smooth it sands. And if it's something like oak with high grain you can even build it up before applying bin and fill in the grain by adding water to spackle and painting that on until smooth. You're not getting out of sanding
Some people just have no taste, yeah paint over a perfectly finished wood with some thick ass paint and make your house look cheaper. I don’t get people their brain needs to be evaluated.
