  • How to airbrush miniatures for beginners. I have been airbrushing models for 15 years now. And this ONE airbrushing tip to rule them all is not the usual and boring "thin your paints properly to skim milk consistency" tip ( guilty of this too ). I am guilty of this classic thinning recommendation, which is similar to paint in two thin coats ( which I also recommend ).
    Airbrush used here is the new Harder&Steenbeck Kyiv Infinity Dark airbrush.
    Miniature featured is from Mammoth Factory Games.
    Do watch until the end of the video to learn the "One Tip" to make your airbrushing easier and fun.

    Having a video with "Beginners" in the title and using a 300 dollar airbrush doesn't seem to line up. I appreciate that these tips are helpful across the board.

      @@DonSuratos everything, some army paints (mainly speed), some guild ball, citadel ( now only contrasts since the paint would dry too fast in the pot), inks, and Msp.. which was better. Once I put some Vallejo down on a model this week, it was like adding silk.. it applied evenly, effortlessly, and took thinning well.

    I started airbrushing a year ago. Frankly speaking, in the beginning I had the most problems with thick paints and learning to control the air- and paint flow with the trigger in the right order. Both causing the airbrush to clog often. Thinning the paints down to a 50/50 thinner/paint ratio did help in the beginning though...Guess every situation is different. Anyway thanks for this video, keep going with the good work.

    You should be careful on not recommending thinning. That's fine for thinner lines of paints, sure. You're going to have a real bad time if you try to put a dollop of Army Painter Matte White directly into a .2mm nozzle airbrush and spray it unthinned, though.

    • @karmaq8462
      @karmaq8462 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You shouldn't really thin your paints , I think it's great not to thin paints , if you buy air paints already , you don't need to thin them , as I've learned from air brushing for over 2 years . Also if you watch actual air brush that goes on canvass and shirts etc . They don't their paints . Thinner is just a gimmick and also I see alot of people thinning primer then complaining it doesn't stick .

    • @brendanarmstrong7802
      @brendanarmstrong7802 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@karmaq8462 To be fair, primers are also formulated for airbrush. I'm not talking about thinning airbrush paints. My issue is that he didn't mention that he was specifically talking about airbrush paints. Some miniature paint lines and colors (especially whites) err closer to heavy body acrylics than airbrush paints, and NOBODY is gonna have a good time trying to airbrush unthinned heavy body acrylics.

    • @DonSuratos
      @DonSuratos  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@karmaq8462 Actually thinning is fine. But do not overthin. Painting illustrations require less to zero thinning, because they want and need more control. Thinning is not a gimmick bro. Thinner can be, as you can do away with water. 😉

    What about stuff like Primers. For example I like using STYNYLREZ, but do I really need to thin them? I keep ending up with dry-tip even using thinned mixtures.

    • @DonSuratos
      @DonSuratos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a gazillion of videos on airbrushing. But primers and varnishes you could thin 2 parts primer and 1 part thinning sauce. 1:1 will also work. 😊

    • @SigurdDecroos
      @SigurdDecroos 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Careful with Stynylrez and OneShot, some airbrushes like the H&S have problems with these primers.
      Vallejo Mecha Primer, Molotow Black and ProAcryl primer work like a charm with all airbrushes.

    If I have the entire mecha air line, what should I get to supplement that line with from the model air and game air lines?

    • @brendanarmstrong7802
      @brendanarmstrong7802 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably nothing, unless you're doing real-life wartime miniatures and need specific colors for historical accuracy. That should be plenty. The Mecha Color line is just designed to be a more resilient version of the Game Color line, and the Model Color line is meant to be their line for scale modelers going for 1:1 accuracy with real life.

    • @DonSuratos
      @DonSuratos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hard question... since the Mecha Color line were designed ro match Gunpla Colors. Meaning the green matches Zaku Green, the Pink matches Char's Pink. Unorthodox colors for some. The Game Air line should compliment the Mecha line very well. Since the Game Airs have very bright and vibrant colors ( IF you are into that ). As mentioned, Mecha Greens are weird. So you could look into Escorpena green and such from the Game Air line. 😊

    • @DonSuratos

      Except the greens bro. Mecha Greens are desaturated a d meant to match Gunpla greens. 😊
