Auto Designers of the day were artists in their own right. Today most cars are designed by computers for practicality and efficiency, thus no real styling at all! There are a few exceptions, yes, but most people are not buying Buggattis and Teslas!

Beautiful car built by real craftsmen. In 1966, this is what Buick wanted their cars to look like.

My Grampa, born in 1898, that worked for Buick from 1910, there were no child labor laws, until he retired, lied to be a test driver at 16 (he didn't have his driver license)and drove the back roads of Michigan testing Buick cars. I can't imagine the roads back then. What a hoot. He showed me a Riv with two 4 barrels when I was about 10 or 11. I had no idea what he was showing me. I wish I had that car now.

My friend, Al, is an old motorhead who now resides in FL. He wanted to shoot a two tone look to my 93 C1500 a few years ago so we went out one day to pick out a color to compliment the OE quasar blue GM used back then. I chose deep water blue which Plymouth used on a lot of cars. While prepping the truck, Al cut out and welded in patches behind the front wheels where he saw some rust bubbling. I didn't know he was going to do it and I would have liked to have watched him do it. He was real quite about things until he had to open his mouth. I paid for tools to do the work he did at times. I also know where to shop online for things he couldn't find; that can go a long way.

Dale Andrews ... Absolutely agree with you on that one. I had one in the early to mid seventies. It was the lower tier version with the bench seat and column shift. Steel wheels with covers that resembled the wheels on this car. The nailhead 425 was called a Wildcat 465, referring to the torque at 2800 RPM. Horsepower was rated at 340. It was a good performer for the size and weight. It's two favorite highway speeds were 95 and 105 as shown on the super cool roll up speedometer. When I got the car, it had a set of fairly worn bias ply tires on it. Right at that time, Atlas tires came out with 70 series steel belted radial ply tires, so I ordered a set for the car. It made a huge difference in stability and traction. The previous owner made a little change that made a big difference in stance and driveability. He installed load booster rear shock absorbers which were equipped with coil springs on their bodies, adding lift to the rear end, negating the tail dragger stance. As time went on, a guy who turned out to be a rat borrowed the car and took it far from the area. A collision occurred when a drunk woman turned in front of him, thoroughly wrecking the right front fender and bumper. I managed to collect a small amount of money from her insurance and had a shop cut the fender off the tire, making it driveable, but terrible to see. I plucked out the engine and transmission and transplanted them into my '56 Chevy 210 4dr sedan, creating a monster.

My dad was a 'Buick Man', having worked as a production manager at GM in the early '50's. So, naturally, I was a car nut since I can remember. The Buicks were 'old guy' cars to me, but I remember appreciating their innovative styling that took form in the Rivieras. When the '66 Riviera made its debut, I thought that GM really got it right with their graceful coke-bottle shape that also affected Camaros and Corvairs. At that time I was ready to get my own car, and considered the '66 Riviera as the most beautiful car to ever come out of Detroit! I settled for a Chevy...

This car looks incredible I really like how they used modern rims and tires but still have a factory look and some sidewall. That carries throughout the entire car though customized but as Jay mentions retains the dna of the original. It's refreshing to see someone work with what came on the car and enhance it. Rather than drop in different seats, 20's with a rubberband around them. Or they just drop it not air ride like this, where it can still ride at a normal height and navigate driveways and uneven roads.

That car is wonderful. Yeah, it's beautiful for the paint and interior, but that it retains so much of its character, too, is what brings it all together (heck, that car had character even when stock - what a great car to use as a platform). I was born in '70, and remember being a kid in the regular-sized American cars of this era (or many that drove a lot like it from the 70's). This is probably one of the best custom jobs on Leno's Garage site that I've ever seen.
