I grew up with nick, that isnt his guitar or amp rig. He played an ibanez S series with single coils, the strat in this video is a friends. Strats sound distorted on 10 volume without a drive or distortion pedal.
Not really. He uses the right amount of gain (if anything, too little), but the wrong EQ and pickup. A lot of people listen to Eric's tone and interpret it to be neck pickup, but he's actually using the bridge pickup for that creamy ass tone. That's why it's so consistent up and down the neck, and doesn't get any of this kind of *throatiness* if you know what I mean. Eric's EQ cuts almost all highs for his solo tone, so you can get that really dark but somehow clear tone.
Dolphous Uranus I don't know what strat you play on but mine doesn't fine at 10 volume. Although it definetley gets more distorted if there is already distortion at higher volume.
I wish that the audience could have truly understood how insane it is that he can do that. He’s a high schooler, and that song is impossible. Impressive af, i wish you the best of luck on your journey.
Samdeman22 The length between the start of your wrist and your knuckles [1st set] makes all the difference. Jimi Hendrix had really LONG hands, not wide as such. That's how dudes can play fast with a low guitar.
DH971 he plays the main riff different though. Eric uses a hybrid picking technique on the trigger and he plays it in a different spot lower on the neck.
Dude this is THE best cliffs cover ever. Flawless take, tight band, and the guitarist literally has every single eric johnson nuiance down pat, articulation and phrasing both. Disgusting raw talent on the guitar here
And anyone who makes any smartass comment about "he didn't hit every single note" based off the album's "studio" version, I got two FACTS for ya. 1: Chances are the critic CAN'T PLAY IT AT ALL, so sit your ass down and shut up! 2: If you've ever heard Eric Johnson play it himself live, no two versions are ever the same and none sound EXACTLY like the studio version. It's his composition and if you dare to criticize that, it's pure arrogance. This song is an instrumental guitar jam, pure and simple, and as long as you get the basic melody and sections right, who gives a damn if you had to improv a bit? That's the way EJ plays it himself.
Exactly. The one thing I see on here more than anything is people criticizing a guitarist because their version isn't note for note. Or the bend isn't right. There no vibrato there. It gets old. Been playing for 30+ years and I'm not even a good player but when I play Cliffs or any song I cover I play it my way. I agree, many of the critics probably can't play the song themselves. Great cover here!

Wow, great job all 3 but this Nick is amazing to even attempt this most difficult song! Wow! Eric's incredible song is probably my most favorite instrumental of all time. I play guitar a bit (make noise) but I wouldn't even attempt to learn it. Love it guys!
Nice HS rendition. Kid looked a bit nervous 😉 It's all about pick dynamics. Most find this beyond them because once their right hand learns to pick strings without conscious thought, they stop learning how to pick and things like picking economy and hybrid picking are unlearned and unpracticed. This song absolutely requires proficiency at both. Eric spent years trying to craft his pick mechanics, without instruction. Whose gonna teach him? He's a guitar god... Sweep picking. Downward pick slanting. String hopping. Hybrid picking. Chunking. Learn these intimately and then, the structure and form of Cliffs of Dover becomes recognizable and playable. Otherwise, its just another unattainable goal, achieved only through a trip to the crossroads... So yeah, you can hammer on and pull off like crazy but fast picking gets you lost fast. Why? Because you suck? No. Because you neglected your picking for your fingering? Yup! 🎸🎼

Kid just needs to learn to hybrid pick and he’s basically Eric Johnson
He could've worn some cooler pants.
+Maxstar22 yeh man trip pants and a BVB shirt woulda been a lot better
+BrandonJ TheBJ BVB? Fuck outta here
+Maxstar22 They probably didnt stay on for very long after this performance
Wookie Jesus congrats on not understanding sarcasm
BrandonJ TheBJ Its kinda hard to know if something is sarcastic in text form. Also it didnt really seem to be sarcastic.
This is nothing. I wanna see this kid play smoke on the water, then he's earned my respect.
I can barely play guitar and I can play smoke on the water....wow you better get to know what songs are actually complicated..Cliff of Dover is hard as hell...
samiaminc It was extremely sarcastic. I have been playing guitar for like a year and I can't do anything this guy did. Of course Cliffs of Dover is hard, smoke on the water is a beginner song. That was my first song actually.
epicfailure7980 the first song i learned on guitar was smoke on the water, i started when i was 7, now im 14, i can play cliffs of dover like its nothing now. my fingers started to bleed when i learned this song at first. it hurts like hell to play guitar with bleeding fingers
samiaminc WOOOOOSH! You're stupid as fuck

This kid is incredible. All the musicians were excellent I hope to hear more from Nick Poczynek.
fucking sick, owned it
I stuggle to play this on guitar hero on easy he just shreds it casually walking round wtf
Haha come on man you struggle on easy?
lol I've done it on expert with a controller cx
I only know this song off of guitar hero 3
Wow, great job all 3 but this Nick is amazing to even attempt this most difficult song! Wow! Eric's incredible song is probably my most favorite instrumental of all time. I play guitar a bit (make noise) but I wouldn't even attempt to learn it. Love it guys!
Nice HS rendition. Kid looked a bit nervous 😉
It's all about pick dynamics.
Yup!
🎸🎼
+Jon Mallary i bet Bluegrass players can ace this song
You watched Troy Grady's cracking the code didn't you?
Jon Mallary thanks grandpa
guyseyes
Lol
That's a first!
We're I younger I might have a different response...
Thanks man! Maybe next year?
shockt9610
Love his vids!...;)
Im way better. I can play this on guitar hero 100% expert :D jk jk
Guitar hero? You're playing a game, not an instrument. No comparison!
brettmb5776 Understand the comment and then understand sarcasm, after doing those points it becomes clear that your current comment is useless. No comparison!
The Mega, I would have thumbed up your comment if you hadn't added jk to it. It destroys the whole joke man. I went from laughing to wondering if you're a tool.
...
didnt want to hurt anyones feelings
Not quite my tempo. Dragging, just a hair.
WOW, Just WOW !!! These kids were AWESOME ! INCREDIBLE !👍✋😲
wow this is my school .-. And it almost has 2Mil views XD
Im sure if this guy sat down alone and tryharded he would be able to play the song better than Eric.
Lol that made s*** a brick but ya probably xD
No. Go watch the extended live version Eric does stood up, it's got more hits than the studio version and it's not hard to see why. This kid is good, very good, but not Eric Johnson good, not even close.
John Smith Hahahaha, the thought of you sitting in your bedroom smashing the keys in a furious rage whilst your mother yells at you to keep it down has me in stitches. I'm guessing I humiliated you somewhere else on TH-cam? Flattered I made that much of an impact. By all means, cry some more, I got a real kick out of that.
John Smith Even funnier I just noticed you +1'd your own comment. Stick to commenting on your gay little Dragonball Z videos in future kid.
Snuffsaid2007 dragon ball z is cool dont bring that into the fight
And no love towards the bass lol
There never is lol. We are just another number lol
+Ramon Medero its what you get for not playing a real instrument.
i kid i kid
Beautifully executed by all. True to form and compelling. Bravo!
