Greatly enjoying the videos well done, as a club golf coach and now trying hard to educate the junior golfers more into the keeping of the course. Most these juniors are exploring carrier options and the route into golf course management / maintenance is one I would not rule out for them. I think it would be great a City and Guild course they could enroll upon so when they make school leaving age or summer breaks they are knowledge up and seeking work experience at watering greens, keeping bunkers tidy, general up keep. I have worked in landscaping for 25 years and these video's are next level information. It is education like these videos that will set the benchmark of quality green keeping. 👏👏👏
I’m in the golf course trade here in Wales and really enjoy seeing other people’s methods when working closely on the greens, very well produced and done accordingly by the course manager. Overall a fantastic job
Hi Robbie, my son plays rugby for B.R.A. at Roughort (Mallusk). There is a huge amount of sand on their pitches and I feel they are the best pitches of any of the schools in Northern Ireland. At the start of the season the grass looks like a thick carpet and the pitches are playable when most other schools’ pitches are a mess after prolonged heavy rainfall. There’s a clear difference & that difference is the sand. P.S. the quality of that piece is brilliant.
BRA have the funds to look after their pitches well, no doubt they will be using the right materials too If you enjoyed this video, watch this one next th-cam.com/video/JhGJG3e_yfE/w-d-xo.html
Hi Robbie for this subject matter you couldn't have come up with a better quality video than this. A lot of us are pure lawn obsessed and to see how the pros do it on course is not only interesting but also good to see how the core principles don't change at home. Just a brillaliant peice , well done to ya 👏 👍
To be honest the video doesn't explain jack shiot about why we use sand...there are countless reasons why and maybe you should male based on that instead of a single machine.
@@Premier_lawns_official these newer turf grasses being bred thrive in sand compared to any other soil BESIDES for new zoysia ultra dwarfed cultivars. Drainage yes is a huge reason, reducing thatch by light top dressing but mainly that's done by verticutting, we verticut and topdress every two weeks during the growing season for new Bermuda greens and bentgrass like A1, A4, 007, 777 etc etc. These newer grasses can handle salt a ton of it, that's not a factor really even if it is in the sand you can flush it out with heavy rain or a greens flush with irrigation which is usually 60 mins watering. The greens aren't completely sand if people think that they're wrong, 90% sand %10 peat to absorbed a little water hence it's a root zone mix we just use pure sand for topdressing. Also you don't get firmer greens from sand, sure they drain quicker but with sand greens you can dry them to the bone like they do on the PGA to the point of grass dying if weather permits, this is how they get hard as a rock and super firm. Sand is also used for better displacement, fresh oxygen in, carbon and other gasses out. When we water for a long time the water acts like sub air pulling air into the root zone that's why they designed it in the first place and to gave dry greens whenever. Those are most of the reasons why we use sand but if we had a choice WE WOULDNT USE SAND, its so hard on everything from mowers to tines and even drainage eventually once time happens
Sand is miracle stuff to repair or level the lawn. I just add sand and some grass seeds. The following year the patch is invisible and the sand seems to have disappeared. Thanks for explaining how the magic works.
Great Video Robbie, that is a beautiful course . I had lessons once for Golf, the pro said i needed to take a few inches of my clubs, i asked why he said so they fit in the Bin!! Ill try to stick to growing the green stuff. Cheers again

Hi mate brilliant channel. I’m from Belfast myself and recognise some of those streets ur working in. I’m a decorator myself. I have a small lawn and have used ur videos to aerate and overseed a few weeks back. It has all come on brilliantly but I have a few bare patches that aren’t as thick as the rest . Should I overseed the whole thing again or just mix some soil and seed up for the bare patches?was out today trying to stripe it with a brush. I have lost the plot since finding ur channel 😂
As a groundskeeper on a golf course, this is the worst job to do. It’s 9-10 hours nonstop, the machine goes 1mph and all you’re doing is hauling buckets of dirt. Luckily, we haven’t done it in a few years. 🤗
Great to watch doing my bit with my new lawn.. I have just put down again some 4 in 1. Will this be enough then spike coming into the damper months? I also seem to have alot of mushrooms growing in my lawn can't seem to understand? Lol
Really enjoyed that video, fascinating to see the gear they have on a large golf course, only thing is how to even attempt to emulate that at home without a shed full of gear. Maybe a video on tools you can buy at B&Q to look after your own lawn would be useful. eg Electric scarifier (Ryobi?) and no idea where you can own your own verticutter or something to aerate your lawn.
And I wonder why I can't get my lawn as good as a golf green (or even a fairway)! All the same I have mown, scarified, spiked over sown and top dressed my lawn and it's looking great.
I'm a superintendent at a low budget muni. looking to increase green speed. does verticutting get em to stimp a lil faster? how often do you verticut? and u guys just use a triplex w 9 blade reels to pik up residue after that deep cut wutevr u were calling it?
We use sand for many different reasons, first the newer turf grasses do best and thrive in sand, roots grow as deep as possible 10 to 12 inches even deeper on some greens. Top dressing a green without aeration is to control thatch mainly because these grasses create so much thatch, the sand cuts that down. These machines in the videos are great mainly the vertidrain system I would never use this other machine not needed. Even if you use these machines you run a risk by not pulling any plugs with hollow tines aeration down the road, soil layering which can lead to black layer.
Can only dream ours get hollow tinned then sand i s spaded on then brushed across by machine, the excess is brushed off for the next green. Result bone hard greens that won’t receive a ball in summer.
Sorry but those tines aren't anywhere near going 9 inches deep! If that were true I guess I'm a foot long lol. Those tines aren't even 9 inches in length and you can see the depth marks are at least 2 inches from the mount point
Watching all the equipment and work that goes into golf courses makes me hate golf even more. I cannot think of a more ridiculous way to waste money, resources, and burn off all that fossil fuel for wealthy yuppies to flaunt their money. I think it's cool to see the actual work, so don't get me wrong, I'm glad you're showing it - but this stuff is literally just so the world's richest people can go somewhere and feel like they are athletes and important.
