    With local dimming turned on the picture looked fantastic to me! I don’t no why you would watch any TV that has local dimming and not have it turned on. I’m glad that you point all the pro’s and con’s no matter how insignificant or significant they maybe, it makes for a very informative review…. Keep up the good work

      Because gaming modes often switch off LD and backlight, and a slew of motion processing to improve the latency.
      And, if you have 2 TV's with the same hardware and the same LD, both could choose to use it differently with their unique upscalers or firmware choices and software ie Sony using LG panels, et Al.
      Testing with LD off, can tell you more about the Local Dimming's settings, strength and weakness in content, notably where it's going to be crushing black content when the LD has to make choices or allow for custom options.
      For normal watching, it's useful to get a baseline so you can tell when it's off or slow to work. Especially on 21:9 or 2.35:1 borders with subtitles, the LD contrast vs non-LD contrast would make the subtitles a different level of brightness when the LD algorithm decides to turn off or on where subtitles appear and disappear quickly, leaving a flash or smudge/blur behind.
      Backlight bleed and bloom can also be significant on wide angle so it's useful to test if the backlight/LD is insulated or the LD control is fast and efficient.

      I recently saw the QN85A at BestBuy for the first time. Although it was limited what I could see I was amazed how good the TV looked. It was very bright with very dark areas and looked like a VA panel. I seriously thinking of buy the 75" but they were sold out. That's how good this TV looks. This TV looks better than it does on paper.

      I have a important question for anyone willing to respond. In your personal opinions. Would you Buy a new Samsung QN85A 55 inch for $779 or Buy a Sony X95J 65 inch new for $1479. With a promised $379 refund upon delevery so final $1100. I'm so flipping lost & confused on which one to jump on. The orders are secured for both. Just have to cancel 1. "HELP"!!!!😩

    VA + 576 dimming zones on the 85" would turn that "fake contrast" you mentioned in the video from the IPS panels, into actual bloody brilliant contrast...

    Thanks so much for this detailed review. I have been looking at getting the QN85A 75" or the 85" version; this review helped me make my decision: I chose the 75" version, since I do not want a VA panel, taking all pro/cons into consideration. The ADS panel on the 75" is definitely better once you look at both of them next to each other in real life. This TV (QN85A) is by far the most expensive one I ever purchased, I've bought good working cars for less.🤣 I currently have the Samsung 82QT with the VA panel, and the QN85 will definitely outperform it, albeit slightly smaller. Thanks again for your unbiased reviews, I appreciate it!

    nice review. often i find rtings reviews pretty generic but this one really teased out some peculiarities. i've just ordered one of these and got a great deal on it. really looking forward. suits me as i live in a pretty bright environment. the IPS trickery with the local dimming is an interesting approach, that's why i appreciate reviews that go into real world experience, because often ubiquitous tests don't really tell the full story. good digging

    • @prgrms

      Had this set for a week now and I’m very happy with it. It does almost everything I could want it to do. the menu ads are a touch annoying but I’ve largely started to forget about them. and the Smart Things app is nice for doing certain things to avoid menu diving. the brightness is great and the colours are awesome, hdr is great too. I do notice a little dse but it’s not enough to warrant me sending it back and dealing with all that jazz. Ambient mode is fantastic. And something I didn’t see in any review is a cool feature called Music Wall, which is like a software based music visualiser. As soon as you Bluetooth your tunes to it, it starts up, and from there you can either go back to ambient mode or switch the display off entirely. Google assistant wouldn’t login for me, but for some reason doing the setup with the inbuilt browser solved it. wish samsung would organise the menu bar a bit better but I suspect it’s laid out the way it is to give those little ads facetime. Only other thing is I would say my game mode experience was mixed, took a while to find the right settings and I would say some games are better off without it. From what I can tell the Game mode does a better job with 4K rather than 1080 but ymmv. Cheers

    I need an answer to what seems to be a dichotomy but shouldnt be. The set measures only decent contrast but excellent HDR. How can they both be true. Isnt HDR dependent on a great definition between things on screen? Isnt HDR also dependent on great contrast? Are we now understanding that great contrast isnt as important to HDR or do the sets measurements improve when HDR content is shown? The numbers dont seem to add up when the overall performance is looked at. Whats the story with this set?

    Thank you all for your hard work and delivering thorough content! I’m trying to decide how my money is best spent. Is it quality or quantity (size)? My budget is about $3,500. I mostly watch movies at night in a fairly dark room and sports at all times of the day where the room will have a few windows. Our curtains work reasonably well, so the light isn’t terribly bad. The viewing angle isn’t too important to me but, my prominent seating position is about 12ft from the TV. What would you recommend? Quality of picture or size, obviously a balance of both but, here’s where I can’t make a decision. Do I go for the Sony A80j (77”) or save a couple of bucks for a bigger screen with the Samsung QN85A (85”)?

      At that distance, using our size to distance calculator, we'd suggest the bigger TV, but this is more preference based and subjective.

    How can a TV have the following "CONS" (I quote from RTings site):
    - Low native contrast that can result in noticeable blooming (1300:1), score: 6.7
    - Backlight isn't flicker-free (PWM @120 Hz)
    And (I add):
    - DSE score of 7.2 (which you say is "decent")
    - Black uniformity of 6.0 (which you say is "mediocre")

    It's pretty amazing though how that extremely low contrast ratio even with local dimming is so different in perception.
    The "Installer" guy did a comparison with the QN90A and head on the 85A looked just as black and punchy in colors etc. Yet in Rtings the QN90A has over 26,000:1 with local dimming which is highest ever I think for LED. Yet the 85A only ~1,900:1.. That is something close to 13x less contrast ratio.
    The QN90A can even look to have more bloom in some situations. What gives?
    I am desperate to see a review of the Sony X95J.. The X90J might look nice, but it's not very bright.

      Do you know this from experience, or from what you have read on the internet? AVS members who OWN the Q90A are not having blooming issues. A FW upgrade improved the LD algorithm. Base software was exuding some blooming, specifically on the 55”.

    • @obidean3964
      @obidean3964 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's because of the stupid (sorta) IPS panel sourced from BOE they used on this one. A confusing decision they made considering even many of their cheap Crystal UHD TV series also use VA panel which does help significantly in contrast against other competing cheap TVs in the same class. Why Samsung !?
      Hopefully the Q90A and Q95A will fare way better than this and use better VA panel. If they still use VA in those sets, can expect the contrast will improve tremendously over this Q85A, resulting less to none blooming thanks to Mini LED.

    • @loki76
      @loki76 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TurboGuy979 I am not saying it's a fact I don't trust all reviews because it's in the eyes of the beholder and there are tricks to lower perception of blooming.. That said the QN90A is extremely overpriced in Canada. It's true what you say with 55".. I don't know why every single reviewer CONSTANTLY only review 55" in all TV's.. It's a big difference in zone count on a 90A between 55 and 65.

    • @RTINGSdotcom
      @RTINGSdotcom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! We didn't review the Q95T as it was a European variant, but we did review the Q90T and expect them to perform similarly for the most part.
      Overall, we give the edge to the Q90T though. The 55 inch QN85A uses an IPS panel, so it has a low native contrast ratio but has wider viewing angles. While local dimming helps improve the contrast in actual content, there's still some noticeable blooming and IPS glow, so it may not be the best choice if you watch a lot of movies in the dark.
      The Q90T, on the other hand, is more consistent across different uses. It has a VA panel with a high contrast ratio and good black uniformity, and thanks to the 'Ultra Viewing Angle' layer, it has decent viewing angles. It also has a slightly faster response time than the QN85A. While it doesn't get as bright as the QN85A, its high contrast gives it a slight edge with HDR content.

    Hi, I'm trying to decide between getting a 65 inch Hisense H9G for $949.99 or a 65 inch Vizio Oled for $1499.99 (If it goes on sale again. It's $1799.99 right now.), both at Best Buy. Is the Vizio Oled worth the extra $550? I don't have a PS5 or Xbox Series X or S yet but plan to get them in about 2 or 3 years when they're cheaper. With the Hisense H9G I would have to buy another tv when I get the new consoles to use the systems at 4K 120hz since it doesn't have HDMI 2.1, so is it worth saving money buying the H9G now and buying a tv with HDMI 2.1 later? My main concern right now is picture quality in SDR, Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ (since both have it) and streaming. Also, do these tvs have tv or source led Dolby Vision? I'm not concerned about burn in on the Vizio Oled because I only occasionally play video games and watch content with static images. My room is dark to dimly lit with only mild sun light and no direct sunlight. Also, I would love to see an updated comparison video compairing the LG CX, Sony A8H, Hisense H9G, Vizio Oled, Sony X900H, and Sony X950H. Thank you in advance for reading my email and for any advice you give me.

      Hi Steven!
      So if you plan on getting a next gen console and you'll want a TV that supports HDMI 2.1, it might make more sense to purchase a TV that supports those features now, instead of buying a TV now and again in a few years. Ultimately though, that is up to you!
      As far as the Vizo OLED vs the H9G goes here are the details! First, they both support Dolby Vision. The picture quality edge overall goes to the OLED TV though. If you're not concerned about the limited brightness of the Vizio OLED, it's the better TV for movies and gaming.

    Does Samsung still have a problem with the dirty screen effect in the 2021 models?

  • @loki76
    @loki76 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You can tell Samsung is having some changes. Their Display division used to make LCD panels. Clearly now Samsung Electronics is shopping for panels outside the company..
    Samsung display is now doing QD-OLED and QNED. This is a transition phase for Samsung. But they sure loves to charge a premium. Imagine how cheap this 85A panel must be. Total budget yet they charge huge amount for the TV because of MiniLED.

    • @obidean3964
      @obidean3964 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm kinda makes sense. Although yeah I feel kinda disgusted when it turns out to be sourced from BOE, considering how expensive this TV is, it's simply not acceptable alongside the blooming seems almost no difference to regular FALD TV, it's madness. Should have use VA panel instead, I don't need super bright TV, contrast is more important.

    • @loki76
      @loki76 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@obidean3964 That's the really interesting part. The Sony LED TVs have very few dimming zones, no MiniLED but they still do exceptionally well in blooming and black level tests. Even tough tests with instruments show pretty low contrast ratio. Sony works some algorithm magic and they can appear deep black. I think it's ironically because they use less zones. They have more control and use the lights instead to help dim and not just zones.
      It's only really in pitch black rooms or there is an "overlay" of a bright object a bloom appears. Which is barely 1% of the time using the TVs.
      I am curious how the X90J and X95J will do this year.

    • @obidean3964
      @obidean3964 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@loki76 We got X90H and the blooming is actually apparent especially when watching Netflix with subs from off angle or if the credit starts rolled in with all menu at the corners. Still I love the TV, Sony color out of box is excellent (Expert preset is the best), Dolby Vision content also looks great, Android TV is snappy. So, kinda expecting Samsung's Neo QLED got better handling of the issue since they make big deal during the last CES but turned out, no at least for the lower end models like this Q85A.
      Weirdly I find their last year's Q80 is very good at handling blooming, better than X90H (probably thanks in part to contrasty VA/PLS panel it use) but the price is way more than our Sony, so we ended up with it and we're extremely happy with the Sony :)
      Agree I'm also curious how this year X90 will fare, hopefully the blooming issue has been reduced. One thing I know that X95 has almost significantly better picture quality, brighter but sadly in my place, X90H was the Sony flagship for LCD before OLED lineup.

    • @loki76
      @loki76 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@obidean3964 Yes off-angle is always going to be an issue with VA panels. And as you mentioned the blooming only really occur with "overlays". Such as subs or a menu popping in that is bright in contrast. But content that is a part of an image seldom bloom. If you know what I mean..
      The Q80 I find though has more of an overall grey tone to the blacks.
      There is something with the algorithms too.
      Even though the QN90A can be really really black and have way higher contrast ratio than a 900H or 950H etc, it's pretty amazing how viewed from the front and in most content the Sony's handle the blooming as well and at times better. This despite the QN90A has anything from 576-792 zones vs the Sony at only 32 zones. That is crazy..
      Sony has become really good at handling the lights they use in the FALD and the algorithms.
      Even if the contrast ratio is only some 4000:1 vs QN90A reaching 26,000:1 the perception is equal for the most part. Because the tests done when measuring this allows the Samsung to turn down or off the zone making it much more black. But when things are not static and in motion. It has a lot more "work to do" in order to handle the zones and transitions.
      Their panels also bloom a lot from off angle.
      But with a few updates I am sure the QN90A will get even better...
      Personally I am debating on whether I go QN90A or X95J when it comes out.. Reviews will guide my decision.
