    It wont be as terrifying as Catherine's real life adventure with the Sontarans - she thought they were some kind of animatronic until she saw one take off his helmet - and she screamed.

    The Sontarans were recurring aliens in Classic Who, right behind the Daleks and Cybermen in number of appearances. Classic Who fans collectively pumped their fists when this episode's title first came on screen back in the first run.

    Calling the Sontarens 'Potato Heads' has been a thing since they were introduced in the Third Doctor story 'The Time Warrior'.
    We do have quite a bit of fun with Donna over this 2 parter to counteract some of the recent trauma.

    Fun fact: The first appearence of the Sontarans, The Time Warrior, is also the debut of Sarah Jane Smith. It was also the first time that the Doctor's planet was given it's name Galifrey.

    I'd like to say (not sure if I said it before, though), I really respect how you either let us know you've been spoiled on something or at least have suspicions about something that might happen. There are some reactors who I believe fake reactions so they have the "OMG" effect for every single surprise on a show. I like it when people are honest about what they know or suspect they know.

    The Sontarans return! These are classic villains who first appeared in 1973's *The Time Warrior.* The Sontarans faced off against the Third Doctor and UNIT. It was also the first appearance of a new companion of the Doctor, a companion named Sarah Jane Smith.

    Can’t help but feel the Doctor’s grateful speech to Donna when he thought she was leaving would have been better directed to Martha at the end of the previous season.

      @lexiburrows8127 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      You DON'T give that sort of speech to someone you KNOW is in love with you when YOU don't reciprocate those feelings. That is both foolish and cruel.

    • @HuntingViolets
      @HuntingViolets หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@lexiburrows8127 Really? "Thank you, Martha. It's been brilliant. You've, you've saved my life in so many ways." Everything in that applies to Martha, and it would have been nice for him to give her that appreciation. He's been plenty cruel to her, but this wouldn't have been. It's really not cruel to give someone her well-deserved flowers.

    And we haven't even talked about the bees disappearing... 😁
    The thing I love about Ratigan is that not only is he very rat-like, making his name an excellent choice, but he's also perfectly written. Just look at the way Elon Musk pouts and lashes out when something isn't going his way. 😂
    Also, I love Donna's approach to investigating. Everyone is looking at technical data and such, and Donna (best temp in Chiswick, after all) goes straight for the personnel files. Brilliant.

    I remember at the time fans didnt like this one and were telling the writer (helen raynor) so on social media and she was quite upset. I dont think she wrote another story after that. Abd you dont get many women writing for the show. But its a really fun, although light story. Its very very similar to old school classic doctor who actually.

    • @HuntingViolets
      @HuntingViolets หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      The show does need more women writers (and more POC). Raynor also did a couple of _Torchwood_ episodes and after this _Doctor Who_ episode continued as a script editor on the show, working on three of the most important episodes this season. She also did a DW book. And she’s still writing for TV.

    You'll find most of the two parts leave you on a cliff hanger that gets resolved in the first few minutes of the show. It's never as vague as the Hopalong Cassidy sertial where it ended with him being ambushed in a canyon and the next episode picks up with him riding out of the canyon unscathed (no explanation given).

    The Sontarans are so cool in this two-parter, great re-introduction into the series. Sadly they become a bit of a joke after this, which I think happens to a lot of Who monsters after their first time on the show. But it's still cool; I'll always remember the Doctor shouting "you can't fight Sontarans!" with genuine fear and concern in his voice.
    Rattigan is also just top tier when it comes to memorable human villains. You're right, an absolute twerp, and I love it.

    • @10thdoctor15

    • @zakkrulez
      @zakkrulez หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Honestly I think they're an absolute joke in this story - being constantly mocked for their height, the stupid signal thing that renders guns useless (the Doctor even points out how cowardly and un-Sontaran this is but it's never addressed again), the silly haka dance which they never did in the classic series, their armour looks like cheap foam rubber (which it is), I could go on... at least Moffatt meant them to be funny, here they're supposed to be a serious threat but for me they just come across as completely ridiculous.

    Russell T Davies head writer of the show has big mum issues and this issue is shown in this show, it is because he projects his issues in writing mum's like donna's and Martha's mums, where the mums either belittle there daughters (like donna's mum) or make the wrong choices (like Martha's mum).
    I like when the mums aren't straight forward and nice, this shows the character is more realistic to the real world, it also gives the character a chance to development,
    like rose's mum, she had two series to go from I don't like this doctor, to series two were she changes her mind slowly thought out there series and finally comes to the conclusion that the doctor is great.
    Really Martha's mother needed more character development so the viewers would like her more and donna's mother needs the same character development for the same reason but seeing as RTD is against mums unless they are 'perfect' it doesn't look like donna's mum is going to get any chance to development as a character which is a shame and then this is projected to the viewers as negative against the character themselves and then the hate train comes in from the viewers to the character instead of hating on the writing style instead of the actual character.

    (Classic Who talk with possible Modern Who characterization spoilers below)
    People can say "Time War changed the Doctor" and whatnot, but it always bothered me how modern Doctors treat UNIT and soldiers in general. In Classic Who, the Doctor didn't like military methods, but he was often more respectful toward soldiers themselves unless they disrespected him. He was especially pally with some UNIT soldiers back in the day, too. Now he's all, "Ew, soldiers and guns. Bugger off" before they even have a chance to prove themselves.

    • @paulhammond6978
      @paulhammond6978 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, I think that's a fair comment - and like was mentioned in this show, the Doctor never resigned, so he's still employed by them. I think RTD2 is doing better at this with the Unit shows in the recent series. NuWho definitely overdid the "Doctor doesn't like violence" thing, 3rd Doctor was attempting to broker peace with Silurians and the like, and didn't like the Brig blowing them up in the end, but he was more willing to see that sometimes there was no alternative in those days.

    • @lm86531
      @lm86531 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think a big factor in this is the time period where they were released. WW2 was still very recent when the original series started - rationing in the UK only stopped in 1954!! - so the public had a much closer connection to the military. The RTD era started in the Blair/Bush era and episodes like Aliens of London reflect the general mood of the time regarding the military.
