    Caught the Avanti here just now after watching this episode several times before... it is Italian and means roughly the same as Allons-y (French). The Doctor definitely used it on purpose to judge Martha's reaction.

    I think Luke choosing to sacrifice himself to save Earth is interesting because psychologically, you could look at it from different angles. It's him at his lowest because he feels like there's nothing for him left. It's him realizing that he lost his moral compass just because he wanted to belong with the Sontarans. It's him realizing the Sontarans, in the end, were never his friends, and that they are just monsters who want to destroy humanity as a whole, including himself. It's him connecting back with his moral compass and thinking that all of this was his fault, and that he should do something to rectify that. It's him realizing that, if someone has to die, since it's his fault, then that person should be himself.
    But the most ironic one, I think, is that there is a possibility the Sontarans rubbed off on him. In a way, choosing to die to save Earth and to save the Doctor... is kind of a glorious death. Which means that there is maybe a small part of Luke choosing to sacrifice himself to destroy the Sontaran ship... because the Sontarans taught him about the glory of dying in battle. Which would mean the Sontaran Stratagem backfired in a way they didn't expect.
    Also, I'd like to think the Sontarans respected Luke in the end for choosing to do that, because unlike Daleks, Sontarans can at least admire bravery in other species.

    4:36 the close-up is partly due to UK broadcasting regulations about "news" shows being depicted within fictional settings. The regulations ensure such content cannot be mistaken for a real news programme/channel appearing on the device. The typical way UK shows get around this is to show wider setting, like a TV set within a room (with or without people watching) but this extreme zoom-in on the screen, to the extent that the individual pixels or horizontal lines are clearly visible, is a way of mixing that up while still being clear that it is not a real news broadcast.

    Supposedly there WERE women on Sontar - we don't know if there still are natural Sontarans.
    The non-BBC depiction of the Sontarans (original episode writer IP) have SPECKLED heads of yellow with black patches - so the originals may look like that. Interesting how it mirrors camouflage.

      Uh, I don't know where you heard that, but it's not true, "The Lost Boy" aired 8 months before "The Stolen Earth" and there's nothing to suggest the stories were aired out of chronological order.

      @Zomdra หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@christianfrost8660 Seriously, that's all you're basing this on? Isn't it much more likely that that's just a very minor production oversight rather than an intentional restructuring of the two shows' chronology? That's what every source I've ever seen seems to think. I guess it doesn't really matter which takes place first, since neither story directly references the other anyway.

    • @christianfrost8660
      @christianfrost8660 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Zomdra They also reference the events of Revenge of the Slitheen. Indicating that The Stolen Earth takes place somewhere within that period.
      Maybe it was a continuity error but more likely it takes place just after Revenge of the Slitheen.
      Btw if you are trying to win an arguement you have started for no good reason don't make a point of saying that "every source" agrees with your point of view because that doesn't take into account the possibility that the whole world is wrong. When the majority of people say something is correct it becomes accepted that it is correct regardless of whether it was or wasn't. If every source you have ever come across has stated that this is a continuity error then I say that they are all wrong.

    The original Sontaran story from classic Who had a line where one of them sees a woman for the first time (might even be Sarah Jane) and says "you have a binary reproductive system. That's inefficient, you should change it". They are a clone race, so they were originally just confused about why there appears to be two types of human. I'm not sure how that translates into straight up sexist comments in this episode though.
    There are future episodes where something different is done with the concept that the Sontarans are unfamiliar with sexual dimorphism because they don't have it themselves.

    1:19 THE OLD SHOW KNOWS: No, there are no Sontarran females, not anymore at least. Sontarrans are all clones of their greatest warrior(s) and military leader(s). Batches of clones may end up looking "slightly" different due to variation, but successful batches are cloned again. They may have slightly different thoughts or opinions later if they live long enough (LOTS OF BATTLEFIELD PROMOTIONS). This is not exactly discouraged as a new "strategem", if successful, will be added to their playbook. Their need for clones is they have been fighting The Rutans (another old show monster) for thousands of years. Natural reproduction is just slow.
