    I had never watched Margaret Court before. She was a beast. I say that respectfully and with admiration. Big, strong, skilled from the net and baseline, and great touch. Extremely impressive. And had her own languid look. Moving deliberately and with minimal wasted motion. Unique and I think way underestimated in 2023.

  • @Fontsman
    @Fontsman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    The racquets in those days were much more difficult to use. Hence a backhand topspin was very rarely attempted. Court was a terrific athlete and King a great tactician.

    • @Provemewrongwithfacts
      @Provemewrongwithfacts 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow! Quite the uneducated comment. Ever heard of Rod Laver or Lew Hoad, or various other players who hit topspin backhands? Even Billie Jean had a topspin backhand. Why were they so difficult to use? lol

    • @Fontsman
      @Fontsman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I was referring to to women players. I'm fully aware of Laver and Hoad. Even those guys could not rip backhands in the way that Wawrinka does. Generating the level of spin was not possible. Also the older racquets were much smaller with a corresponding smaller sweet spot. Backhand slice and volley were the dominant shots.

    • @y11971alex
      @y11971alex 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      BJK indeed had a topspin backhand stroke, but in the surviving footage on TH-cam it seems mostly used for passing shots and variety from the rear. Topspin makes the ball drop and is applied to returns and passing shots hit at the net player’s foot and at an angle. In rear to rear exchanges, slice was the norm because it was more consistent and could travel deeper in court. This is true in both women’s and men’s tennis until quite recently.

    Margaret Court was amazing. And I know people might not like her cause of what she says, but I'm referring to the tennis player. Played in 47 grand slams, and won 24. Excluding the Australian Open, she played in 33 grand slaps, and won 13. That's nearly a 40% record. Super impressive. Now people would say if Serena was playing she would easily beat her. But that's the wrong question, of course a modern day athlete with all the science and the equipment would go back in time and do well. The correct question would be, how would a talented Margaret Court do in today's tennis with all the access that tennis players have today to trainers, dieticians, etc. We never know. We only go by her record. And she was the best of her time, like how Serena is the best her time this generation.
