He still holds the record for most singles titles at 109. Connors played year round not just Grand Slams. He loved Tennis more than money and really taxed his body playing so many events. These days the top players save themselves for Grand Slam events for the money. Save your sympathy bro. Jimmy Connors defeating John McEnroe in the epic 1982 Wimbledon Final was the biggest upset in tennis I ever saw. I'm not taking anything away from the great Jimmy Connors but in 1982 John McEnroe was clearly the best tennis player in the world and grass was his best surface. Jimmy Connors performed one of the greatest miracles in tennis history by defeating John McEnroe in the fourth set tie breaker and then going on to win the fifth set. I think this match is very underrated.

McEnroe wasn't the best on grass at the time. Connors beat him in the final at Queens only a couple of weeks earlier. So Connors beat him at Queens and then beat him at Wimbledon. Two grass tournaments in a row. Later that year Connors won the U.S open also, and regained the no.1 world ranking. And the next year Connors again beat McEnroe at Queens on grass.

The Wimbledon surface in those days was a lot faster so serve and volley was still a viable way to win a match and the points were therefore shorter hence less sweating. Plus I can’t see any shadows so maybe it wasn’t a hot day.
Then they made the surface slower to accommodate the European clay courters, and then racket/string technology changed which enable huge topspin which made it harder to volley so longer baseline exchanges became more common. Add to that the fitness of the modern player who runs for everything and the game is now more dynamic although I do miss the serve and volley routines.

When Authur Ashe played, and beat Connors in the 1975 Wimbledon, he wore his USA sweat shirt to rub in Connors face (Connors didn't play for the USA in Davis Cup and Ash was the coach of the team for many years.) So when he played, a lot of the guys who played Davis Cup for other countries, like John Newcomb and Ken Rosewall for Australia, they told Ash to wear his coaches sweats to warm up and piss Connors off. They also gave him a lot of tips on how to beat Jimbo. To Ashe's credit, he did all of the above. ...Ash was also very much a friend and fan of McEnroe, so I wouldn't find it difficult to believe that Ashe told Mac to wear his USA jacket as well. I remember. Mac was more than favored because he had freed himself of his major adversary,
by far the most fearful, namely Borg, who had abandoned tennis
and everyone predicted for him a long, unquestionable and undisputed dominion.
But as usual, even if invited not to do it and rebel as he was,he wanted overdoing
and he played and lost the double final against McNamara and McNamee
just the day before the singular final. To make matters worse, with the usual bravado and self-confidence,
he played the final with Connors with his old wooden racket
evidently because he underestimated his opponent.
So he lost dramatically against all odds encouraging Connors, who was considered in decline, to continue playing for several years.
