Easterner John Abbott heads west to investigate the trouble on the ranch he owns. Abbott's manager Holderness is the culprit and has his man shoot Abbott and leave him for dead. But Abbott recovers, and practicing with a gun, will be ready the next time.
This is not the 1932 Henry Hathway version starring Randolph Scott.
Glad to see these old westerns stand the test of time .

Awesome to see the wonderful Zane Gray stories done so beautifully, without the carnage of modern "screenwriters" destructions. This is very well done.
There is very little in common with the book. If you're interested, it's on youtube as an audiobook.

I just watched Sidney Toler in another Zane Grey movie, Mark of the Avenger, also made in 1939. He had a busy 1939; that is the year that he first played Charlie Chan. At about 43:00 in this movie, Sidney Toler is making Flap-Jacks and he tells his friend to come on.. "I can't be flapping these flip-jacks for you all day !" That was good...!!
Paul Fix in his younger acting days sure wasn’t the Marshal of North Fork character. He was one of those gunslingers gone to upholding law. Always enjoying seeing him.
Zane Grey wrote great books and they made great film
Im new to Zane Grey family. Love westerns all of my life. Actually watched this as a kid and a few times as an adult. This is an all time favorite. Thanks for sharing it!
This may not be the 'Beethoven's Fifth Symphony; of westerns, but it could easily sit in for which ever one is. Near-perfection in every way. Thank you for posting this!

This really old ones can usually surprise you. This flick looked kinda so so but was pretty darn good. You can always get picky, but it cuts the mustard.
Back when this came out, people in smaller towns didn’t have a lot of entertainment. Movies were always a big deal. You would have had to been there to understand the absence of “stuff”. No TV, no cell phones, no electronics at all. Happiest time of my life.

Yeah, Charlie Chan is a cowboy. I didn't quite recognize Tolar in his get-up but the voice was the clincher. I wish he could have made 200 Charlie Chan episodes.
From a killer to being sheriff of Northfork. The old west was a wonderful place indeed.

Maybe we all should dedicate some some time time watching the Hallmark Channel over these upcoming holidays. This will give us a chance to learn about the new family values that we are expected to observe. How wonderful.

For example I just realized that the sentence " Are you talking to me " was first said in this film in year 1939, and the leftist Robert De Niro made his fame COPYING it from this film, he even received an award with that dialog. And I'm not kidding just read this comment on Wikipedia: "..he starred in Martin Scorsese's psychological drama Taxi Driver (1976). Anything written by Zane Gray is good enough for me. Gray never disappoints. PS: Russ Hayden was an expert horseman, much better than most actors.
There is LOTS of good horsemanship in this nice old western, including Evelyn Venable`s ! Handsome steeds, as well.....

Alas, probably next to impossible to find the 1924 movie version.

Excellent movie. I've seen it one other time. I'll save it to watch again if it doesn't get deleted or it's of a private collection. That happens on alot of the one's I save.
I just bought a first edition of this novel for $5 from the 2nd shop. Very excited to read it and watch the film edition!
ZG had a place down the road north of Darien, Conn. in horse country. He would visit in his red MG. As a child I sendmber the car and his Tenn. walking horse.
The "old man" was Wolverstone in Captain Blood and was in at least 130 other movies.
This film was technically a Paramount film, it has no Paramount logo at the beginning and end of the film, except "The End" title card was plastered. This came from a 16mm print and it was from a 24-DVD set called "Cowboy Classics" with 100 rare western movies.
According to the content on the DVD sleeve, the movie was from 1932 was wrong, but it was from 1939 according to IMDB. There was an original version from 1932 which was considered lost.

The copyright for the film expired in 1966/67 after Paramount did not renew it, thus entering the public domain.
Other than John Abbott leaving a whole case of dynamite right under 2 lit sticks, & not being able to whup a man (Holderness) twice his age---this was a FINE old-time western. Zane Grey`s book was even better !
Yeah, I noticed that they left the box of dynamite, too.

The film is currently in the Public Domain after Paramount, the original owner of the film, failed to renew the copyright in time.
The young guy played Lucky with Hopa Long Cassidy. Great actor.

The only name I recognized in the cast was Paul Fix. Fix in The Rifleman as his regular character in the series, Marshal Torrance.

Good movie but would have been so very much better if they followed the book instead of looping together parts of 2 or 3 books.

PizzaFlix I knew that when I saw the credits contained no listing of Scott and Lesley Selander as the director. This isn't the only erroneous posting of this film as the earlier Randolph Scott film. I was hoping to get them listed correctly which I see you have now done.

I agree ZG was a good story teller and the books are better than the film's. This version is well in a lot of places besides the box of dynamite, there's a lot of unrelated stupid action all thru it. People were still amazed by ""moving pictures", that content and style was sometimes silly. This one had a poor director.
Stupid does not =suspense
But that idea is still used in movies today.
The running and breaking a high heel...that never ending,"pocket" inside shirts where money, maps etc seems to always go...
When one sees them more as cartoons, it helps.
The theatre of the mind and a ZG book & a full pipe is more my style.

Very disappointing. I wanted to see the Randolph Scott version, not this one. Boo, hiss.
Donald Woods did a great job. I like Randolph Scott, too - but Woods' stature is a might less imposing than Scott's and therefore fit the role of the greenhorn, city/college boy better: naive boy becomes a man. Not a role very believable for Scott to play, IMO.
