- In today's video, I install the Disable in Reverse (DIR) mod that I found out about through some fellow Tacoma enthusiasts on TacomaWorld! Basically, this mod disables your Tacoma's license plate lights when you are in reverse so that during nighttime, you won't get a ton of glare through the backup camera.

I think it is amazing that they actually give you the part numbers and a wiring diagram for us DIYers. That is not something you see very often. I just ordered the stuff to make mine. Much gratitude to both Chloe and the creators of this mod.
Just installed it. Love love love it! The LED LP lights were washing out everything. This made a HUGE difference. Thanks Chloe!

Chloe, thanks for your clean mods videos. I have done both the Total Tail Stage 1 and the DIR mods on my 2016 3rd gen Tacoma and am totally satisfied with both. After a month, I did have to install the load resistors though.

Good video, a big improvement on the dash camera at night. Yesterday, I installed a backup alarm in my Tacoma. I just half tapped the red wire for the reverse light (easy one).
Cool modification. It does make your truck a lot safer been able to see without any glare.
Bought the DIR mod almost a year ago it seems, and it's one of the BEST things I've ever done. Was super easy to install.

Another cool mod/video. Good job this is on my list. Just had a minor accident last week (not my fault)but the good news is the headlight and bumper will be upgraded.

I have installed several of your recommendations onto my truck, the MESO Stage One, the DIR in, & the TRD Pro Air Intake in my 2022 TRD Sport. I really like both the MESO & the Disable in Reverse are exceptional. I like the TRD Pro Intake is does provide a small increase in HP, but not much, but I do like it. I am planning on doing the Reverse light bar that goes on the License Plate as well.
Hey there, just want to say mad props to you. I am very impress with your technical skills. I have installed this on my 2019 Tundra PRO but I was able to get rid of the guide lines for the front camera. I notice you still have it on yours, not sure if you left that intentionally. Just my 2 cents. Good luck and keep the videos coming.

Great Video. Have you considered getting the Brite Box that allows you to use your headlights low/high while the fogs are on. Jesse Rizo had a video on his channel

Question: would you know where to find a mod to made either the top-mounted brake light or all brake lights flash 3-5 times when braking? I saw a Taco with that and would love to find out & watch an install video from you on that. I frequently see cars stop at the last minute with my ‘21 Taco-don’t think they are noticeable enough
There is a bulb that does that on Amazon, it's LED and quite the attention grabber.

It is indeed a requirement for lights on your plates at all times. The reason would to be able to properly “identify” the vehicle. That being said, I wouldn’t say a thing about this mod. And if someone is concerned about license plates while your backing up, their probably to close anyways and shouldn’t be there.
soemthing that would clean off the camera would be nice when dirt or snow gets picked up the back

What is the failure mode when the relay gives up? Will it work as before the install? Or will the plates never light up? Thanks!
Great question. I am not an expert in the failure modes of relays but from what I have read, it is most common for a relay to fail in the "open" position which is the original behavior (license plate lights on whenever parking lights are on). I believe it might be possible for the relay to fail in the closed position resulting in no license plate lights at all but that would be rather rare. If this does occur, since the design employs a T harness, it should take no more than about 60s to remove the T and return to normal behavior.
@@daveeasa That depends on the type of relay, and how it's wired. Some relays are electrically open (controlled circuit off) when de-energized, some are electrically closed (controlled circuit on), and some (called "double throw") have one "side" open and one side closed when de-energized. You'll find that your car or truck has each of these -- and more -- types of relays already installed, depending on function. I would assume, given the experience of the designers of this mod and the way the mod functions, that the relay used is one that is normally closed when de-energized.

Yes, I have the MESO Customs Total Tail Stage 1 which includes LED reverse lights, and you're right it's a huge difference! 😊

the back up camera at night is pretty much useless for me when backing into my driveway . this is a mod I could use and for under a hundred dollars. might. actually buy for my taco.

P.S. I do belive I’ll be adding the anytime camera. P.S.S. I have begun the rebuild on my taco. I had to replace the rear bumper axel assembly. It took a hit and a actually bent the housing. I found 1 in AZ , already got it in so that only leaves the body work. And it’s pretty minor. Gotta switch a door, and fender and I should be mixing some paint. I just realized mine is same color as yours. Silver I’m a Chloe clone. :)

Huh…..my third brake light is my backup light and brake light. I guess it’s only on my TRD PRO ?! It’s LED white on outer part, and red LED in middle when braking.
It is possible you are confusing the cargo lamp with the reverse lamps? They are independent circuits, though perhaps someone may have customized your truck? On mine the cargo light is off the cargo switch (also aptly named the squid launcher switch) and the reverse lights are on when I shift into reverse.
My 2020 Tacoma's camera, or head unit is the blurriest I've seen. I cannot seem to find a fix for this. If anyone knows of one, please let me know.

Does anyone make a modification to do the following? I have had several close call changing lanes not seeing cars on my passenger side mirror? Do you know of any available cameras that will provide an interface with our on board center console that activates when you turn on you passenger side turning signal . Additionally it would be nice to provide and adjustable audible alarm that indicates there a vehicle in that lane preventing a collision. JR
I think the new Tacomas come with an option to have side cameras that you can switch on anytime. Although I have not seen something aftermarket that does that. You could probably do the anytime camera mod but instead of using a front camera, get a side one for under the mirrors
@@ChloeKuo Johnny (puppypunter) has this built for his personal truck. I believe he uses a PAC module and the turn signals as triggers (the PAC is mostly built for this). I think he mounted his side cameras on the roof rack but I have forgotten since we last discussed it. Most of us don't have an obvious spot to mount aftermarket side cameras. The 360 degree camera option is pretty sweet though.

Just a heads up...To test the install you can leave your tailgate down and test that way. The camera is looking at the plate lights.

Absolutely, although you'd also be turning off part of your taillights when you turn your headlights off.

I wouldn’t assume there is anything wrong with this mod legally speaking being safer in your vehicle should make it perfectly legal. You aren’t running from the cops or driving through video cameras.
