My anxiety is so strong that I can't even think about job interviews without feeling anxious, even watching examples of good interview it just freaks me out because I just imagine myself in that situation. I've just started uni and I feel so far behind, everyone goes out together and I just come home back to my safe space. Another reason for this is I can't afford to go out with them because I can't bare the thought of job interviews/working in a new environment where I know no-one. It scares me that I'll never be able to get a job and my life will just be filled with anxiety wherever I go. I wish people were more understanding and knowledgable about this disorder because it is so incredibly crippling and people just assume we're being shy for fun. Thank you for making this video, it was so interesting to watch 💓
Ahh, Bethany, so sorry to hear about your experience. I completely agree that not enough people understand just how miserable and debilitating social anxiety can be. I really appreciate you watching this video and taking the step to leave your comment. I know there are others who will be able to relate.
@bephey Do you mind if I ask how you are doing now? I realize that this comment is a year old...I am a guy in my mid 30's and can relate 100% with every word you spoke of. It sucks! I've been in and out of the work force from 2010-2020. I left my 4th job during covid and have been trying to focus on my mental health. But last fall I applied for 5 different employers, and received zero replies. This year my anxiety and depression has gotten the better of me, and like you said, nobody else truly understands what over-thinking and constantly worrying about others judging me feels like. I want to start fresh and create something new for myself, but the social stress and anxiety is what has been holding me back. Just wondering if you figured out any new tips perhaps? Anyhow...please know you are surely NOT ALONE whatsoever...and I hope that you are doing better! Be kind to yourself. 🖤🖤🖤👉🤘👈
hi! how are you doing? did u go to a job interview? i’m thinking of getting a part-time job but i have feelings very similar to yours. what if i am too awkward and shaky during the interview, what if i won’t succeed on the job, etc… i hate that i have to pretend to be a social, outgoing person to get even a minimum wage job 😭
In my case, I always fail the phone screen because of how poorly I articulate my words and flustered I get. It’s been pretty embarrassing especially if it’s a volunteer position and I have related professional experience. They get excited to talk to me and then I can sense their disappointment once I open my mouth. I get ghosted right after. Many of my interviews have gone this way. For my last job, I got an offer anyways. These experiences stick with me and amplify my fear of future interviews and gets me into an irrational state. Now I’ve been unemployed for a while and it’s been a struggle.
Practicing and Roleplaying only makes me freeze up during interviews. Some employers don't even ask the questions I practice, and some ask oddball questions I was not prepared to answer. The first round with HR is always the strangest. I had a few who never asked me about myself and only talked about their needs, I had others who wanted extreme levels of detail about my day-to-day work experience which is unusual coming from an HR person. I find the chemistry between the interviewer and interviewee really makes or breaks the interview. Some interviewers are great at getting people to relax and answer questions social anxiety or not while others are too stiff and rigid in their approach and make candidates nervous.
I literally just ignore my anxiety and it’s never as bad as my brain makes it out to be. I have an interview this Wednesday but what’s the worst than can happen? I already have a job so it’s not like I’m losing anything by trying. As the Chinese say - “if you aim at nothing, you can’t miss”.

Just had an amazing interview!! Thank you so much for this video.. I was still nervous during my interview but I kept on going! To Anyone reading this KEEP GOING! It sounds cliche but that’s the only way up and out of this thing is TO KEEP GOING! No matter what your adversaries may say it’s mind over matter..God bless
This is such an awesome comment! I'm so glad you had that positive experience, and no matter what the outcome of that particular job pursuit, I hope you can carry the confidence and enthusiasm with you, and as you said, keep going.
I always get a sweaty forehead on interviews it’s so embarrassing …I have thee strangest social/unsocial personality traits lol. This video did a great job identifying things .
You're so right - the sweating issue can be hard, especially in a setting such as a job interview. I'm so glad you connected with the video, and I really appreciate the feedback!
this describes me to a T. I hate the advice during the interview to just practice deep breathing and prepare well because it won't matter how much I prepare, I'll be sweating, stomach upset and I can't remember my name or my life it's so frustrating because I have so much to give!!
Yes, I understand what you're saying. Sometimes the unsatisfying but real truth is that practicing how to sit with those uncomfortable physical sensations (and reminding yourself that they are indeed uncomfortable but not actually dangerous) is the key. Not trying to push them away but "riding the wave" so to speak. The sensations are like a false alarm signaling danger when there is no actual threat.
I just realised something. I am currently very anxious about a job interview tomorrow and I am currently half-way through this video. Thank you for the tips and making this video! But i realised as someone with social anxiety I am trying to do all these things and it feels like no one is trying to accomodate for my social anxiety. This may sound silly or self-centred. But i feel like I am trying to put all these things in my head and change how i think and what i do but I have this illness that I did not choose. I wish the hiring process involved ways to make people with social anxiety feel like they don't have to spontaneously change and the company would do something extra to get to know us beyond the anxiety. Idk. Yes I know I need to do something to get better but i think once i get a job or start something new with time i get more comfortable and can perform well. It's like if I turned up with a cough or i had sinus problems i wouldn't feel such a need to hide my illness. And perhaps social anxiety gets in the way more than a cough but i am still alive still functioning enough! Yes i can be awkward and avoid things that would be good (and sometimes even necessary) to do but people who dont have SA can be lazy or do things half-heartedly anyway!
I totally get what you're saying. The fact that the hiring process often depends on how you're perceived in just one interaction can be tough. The interviewer doesn't *really* get to know you beyond the understandable anxiety of a job interview setting. I wish I had an easier recommendation beyond encouraging you to continue the journey of improving social anxiety. I do know that some job seekers have had success with trying to network more on platforms such as Linkedin and using contacts/connections to build relationships with recruiters and interviewers outside of the actual interview setting so the interview itself doesn't feel quite as anxiety provoking. Not an easy task at all, but perhaps worth some thought.
Thank you so much for sharing this video I have an interview tomorrow and I’m terrified. My social anxiety is up the roof but this video has calmed me down a bit and been really useful for me.
You are so welcome. I'm a bit late, but I hope the interview went well. If it didn't go well, I hope you've found some other opportunities to practice and are continuing to push forward (and show up for yourself) one step at a time.
11:52 I love your first tip but regarding tip 2, I think there is a reason why some people with social anxiety don’t or can’t deal with the “negative beliefs”. Some people don’t have a tangible negative belief to deal with. There are many that suffer with social anxiety as a result of a visceral response. There isn’t necessarily a negative thought pattern causing them to be anxious, rather it’s a fight or fight response that can’t always be “explained” or reasoned with. I find positive self talk helps to calm nerves before I get into an anxious situation but does nothing for me if I actually start to feel anxious in that situation. My theory just that the part of the mind involved in reason does not always have control on the limbic system
I completely understand what you're saying, and this does sometimes come up when working with individuals who struggle with anxiety (and other emotional challenges). In these situations, it is sometimes helpful to focus more on behavioral practice with the use of experiments and exposures while focusing less (or sometimes not at all) on the cognitive piece. Thank you for sharing this feedback.
Social anxiety disorder is caused by hypoglycemia. Go on a hypoglycemic diet and do a course in cognitive behavioral therapy. When your biology is functioning properly, you won’t get the physical symptoms, which can allow you to fix the psychological. But you have to fix the biology first. Check out the hypoglycemic association of Australia. That organization explains everything. I kid you not. SA disorder is curable with a proper diet and the right mindset.

My interview anxiety and stress is very high, I forget everything and blank out during interviews. I attended multiple of them but I keep having the same problem.
