The dealer wanted $892 (yes, eight hundred and ninety two dollars) to change out this part. OK, so after a quick flipping of the bird to them I ran to autozone and paid $33 for the part and then followed your directions/video. Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!

I want to thank you again for these Chevy Cruze videos! While I didn’t do this repair myself, watching your videos helped me determine which parts of my cooling system were failing and helped me so much in the long run. My drive care wouldn’t approve coverage for this repair but shop charged me $331 for full inspection, flush, and water outlet replacement. I feel like that’s a break-even compared to what Chevy wanted for repair after all the headache I’ve been through with the leak already. Your videos have really helped me get an understanding about my Cruze and I love my car more!

Thank you for this post. You saved me a lot of money I did not have. In my case the lip portion of the biggest connect broke off like a ring, I was able to put the rubber hose back and got the car home after adding some water. The quote to replace that and the bypass hose and coolant was $475 before tax. the outlet valve (aluminum) and coolant and the E10 kit were some $75. So thank you!

Thank you so much for this video! Typically, I’m don’t feel confident enough to work on cars, but you made it so easy! I’ve had coolant leak issues for months. At first, my father in law and I changed the overflow tank and kinda solved the problem but luckily I caught this before sending it to the shop. And whoever decided “let’s make the part out of plastic” can suck it! But there’s probably a reason.

I’ve never worked on a car in my entire life (unless you count changing my headlights which I do not), but this video was very easy to follow along to and understand. I’d like to think I saved a bit of money doing it myself and also gave myself an experience I otherwise wouldn’t have…5 hours later and come to find out AutoZone gave me the wrong inlet hose…needless to say, I’m a little angry that all of that hard work was for almost nothing, but I wanted to thank you anyway. You rock!

I’ve just returned from a short “road trip” after completing replacement of the Water Outlet Valve and Coolant Reservoir. I’d previously replaced the Outlet return hose. after it had broken off when I was trying to see where/why a leak was occurring. Not sure how much money I saved by not going to the dealer, but all I ended up paying for was the replacement parts (all from Dorman vs DELCO) and the torx socket thanks to you video(s). 2014 CRUZE LTZ , 82,000 miles.

13 Cruze eco just hit 130k and I've been chasing coolant leak for the last week. Finally led me to this part, which no one has a consistent name for, I like your name. Doing that here in about 5 minutes using this video, it seems to be the last thing I've seen leaking. Selling this car for a new Civic hatch as soon as they start producing them. It's been really nice for me, especially thanks to people like you making the very small amounts of maintenance needed even easier

You’re a lifesaver! Just got it done in about 30 minutes thanks to you. I did it while it was still hot due to rain coming in and me needing my car early tomorrow morning, so that slowed things down a bit, but it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I bought the part from Autozone, along with a $30 Duralast ratchet set that had everything I needed. All in all, I got it done for $80, including coolant. A shop I was going to go to quoted me at $170, so this saved a good chunk of change, plus I learned something!

Thank you *so* much for this very helpful video! You saved me a missing day of work since my mechanic was not available till after the weekend.
I picked up the part at AutoZone for about $33 and followed your guidance step-by-step. I wish I had paid more attention at the 03:33 mark. Instead of setting this plug to the side as you recommended, I actually disconnected it which was difficult to do.
My plug has a slider lock to keep the connection secure and it was difficult to pry open and even more difficult to put back together. I ended up breaking a piece of the slider lock off, but it seems to be staying together for now.
The whole job took me about 4 hours mostly because of that slider lock issue and also I had waning light and cold temperatures working against me, so I had to take a break every so often. I'm guessing it would have taken me about 2 hours if I hadn't disconnected that slider lock.
Anyways, after I reconnected the battery and turned my car on I watched everything under the hood for about 5 minutes and noticed a tiny leak in one of the back hoses. I readjusted and tightened the clamp to the hose and after that everything was dry and functioning.

Followed your video exactly, and now my car drives even better (and smoother) than before it broke in the first place. My problem was that the water valve part that connects to the large radiator hose was severely cracked like you wouldnt believe. I dont know if those spring clamps are the cause of it, but it was pretty horrible to see. I guess the final nail in the coffin was that i hit a dip in the road pretty hard, and then the crack in the valve made it so it lost all the pressure and was spraying coolant absolutely everywhere. You saved me so much money with this video, so thank you.

Much easier to use drain plug on bottom of radiator, than to go through all that trouble to remove radiator hose. Drain is on passenger side of radiator. Remove plastic shield on bottom, about (6) T20 screws and several push pins to remove cover. Drain is on lower corner of radiator. Turn plug several times and coolant will start to drain. Much easier and less messy as the method you describe.

Hey Mike, I watched your video and followed the steps exactly as you instructed. The housing sealed perfectly and the hoses did not leak. Before I refilled the radiator with new coolant, I filled it with a bottle of Prestone radiator flush and water and let the engine idle for 15 minutes. I did not remove the bleeder valve, so I probably only filled the system with 3/4 the amount of fluid specified. I noticed during the idling, the fan kicked on and off. I took the car for a 20-mile drive and then let it cool down. Two hours later, I popped the cap (no pressure) and drained the cooling system. This time, I removed the bleeder valve (along with the lower hose). I flushed the entire system with water and then replaced the lower hose. I filled the reservoir slowly with 50/50 Dex until the fluid came out of the valve, then replaced the valve. I turned the engine on and let it idle for 12 mins but kept the reservoir cap off. The temp gauge (I don't have the digital reading on the info menu) rose slowly until it leveled off at the line just below midway. The fan never kicked on, but the coolant started to boil, so I replaced the cap on the reservoir. I figured if I took it for a drive, then the fan would kick on. So I drove a few miles, making sure to hit high RPMs in several spots. I pulled over into a parking lot several miles down the road and popped the hood. The fan did not kick on, but it appeared coolant was flowing through the hoses because they were hot. The reservoir was no longer boiling. I'm pretty sure the thermostat was working correctly because my heater was working nicely on #1. The temp gauge remained in the same spot. I drove home and parked the car. I popped the hood and let it idle a little bit more, but the fan never kicked on. The temperature gauge remained in the same spot. It stayed solid. Based on this detailed description, do you think there is something wrong with the fan, or is the engine working perfectly?

It’s very possible that your fan motor has failed...unlikely however it happens. You may want to check the fan motor with your meter & verify it’s producing an electrical signal. If it’s not, time to replace fan motor.
It sounds like your Thermostat is working properly. Definitely keep us posted!

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders Thanks, Mike. If it failed, it sure picked a really interesting time to do it. I haven't had any issues with it at all. So, here is the latest. I drove 80 miles this morning to my job. The gauge remained at the same spot. When I got to work, I popped the hood, and that's when I saw coolant spraying from the plastic connector when the reservoir-return hose fits into. I knew that hose was bad. It had been seeping from the joint where it connects to the water valve housing for a few weeks. But I couldn't replace it along with the housing because you can only buy it from the dealer, and auto dealers are closed Sundays in Colorado. I did this repair yesterday (Sunday).
Welp, I told my manager I had to take a Lyft and pick up a part from the nearest dealer (15 miles away. He said no prob. So, a part that I can get for $10 on Amazon ended up costing me about $100 when you include the round-trip cost of the Lyft. I'll replace it later today. BTW, the service manager at the dealership said the fan usually kicks on around 250 degrees. He said the temp at the gauge midpoint is around 220.

Nice video! I've seen a bunch of these parts on this particular vehicle fail. Thanks to the genius that designed it and chose to make it out of plastic! If the engineering team at GM is reading this or whichever company they outsourced the designing of this vehicle to... WTF were you thinking? Way to cheap out! It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that plastic and boiling hot coolant temps will NOT mix for long! If aftermarket companies would make an aluminum replacement for that water outlet and a slip on type nozzle (instead of that fragile clip on configuration) on the top for that hose that runs to the coolant reservoir, they would make a killing! Just saying!

Well done, excellent video and tutorial! I found replacement of that water outlet valve very difficult! Bolts and those wire hose clamps a pain! That first hose you took off from the top of the antifreeze resivour to the water outlet valve still doesn’t seat correctly in the valve

    • @DIYwithMichaelBorders
      @DIYwithMichaelBorders  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks for watching and we appreciate you sharing this. It’s possible that the hose itself is ever so slightly shifted a bit not allowing it to create the water tight seal with the clamp.
Over the years of temperature changes and use of that hose, they can get really hard and warp which also makes it difficult for the hose to create the water tight seal.
If it continues to give you issues after trying to readjust it, you may find it best to purchase a new hose from the dealership.

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders I have to tell you this story. My daughter has a Chevy Cruze and this valve was leaking. Unfortunately she is away at college 700 miles away from me so I told her to take it to a mechanic. She got the car back today and called me saying that the car was now making horrible noises and shaking while she was driving. The mechanic shop was now closed so she couldn’t take it back. She stopped somewhere and face timed with me on her phone. I had her open the hood and put the phone camera down by the valve. I could see that they neglected to reconnect the very large hose that you first disconnected to get at the valve. She was able to reconnect that hose and get the clamp tight and all was well. This all happened just late this afternoon.

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders honestly, I started early and had to get it all done by 2pm to pick up my wife. I needed an extension for the e-10 screws on the outlet valve. So I walked to a shop 30 mins there, 30 minutes back... And it was the wrong size!... Then I looked at my poorly organized tool box and found I had it the whole time. I got stuck with the stubborn hose, but discovered wiggling was key. Took a break after draining and then lost time refilling the coolant (opening up the bleeder on the radiator is important).
Overall, I'm too tired to appreciate that I saved a ton of money doing an easy repair at home. Lol. Should have started with a big breakfast first. I'm grateful for you and your video. I really appreciate that you have helped so many people. If you can assemble IKEA furniture, I believe you can also fix your own car as long as you understand what is going on.

Thanks for watching, if it is leaking from the point between where the valve is & the engine is, you have a failed gasket and the entire valve will need to be replaced.
However if it is just leaking from one single hose, you may have a clamp that has ripped through the hose causing the leak... A new hose may be required. Let’s start there, keep us posted!

Huge problem, please HELP!!! I replaced everything in the cooling system except the radiator. The question or trouble I am having is I replaced the thermostat w/housing, bought a new lower radiator hose. The "quick connect" on the hose fits snug and great on the radiator end. However, on the thermostat housing IT DOES NOT due to the design of the thermostat housing.. I can post pics to show you what mean. (But how do you attach/post pics?)

Thanks for sharing Sara, sounds like you’ve been busy. Let’s get this figured out.
There are two additional sensors that are tied to the Coolant System & send temperature readings to the onboard computer. If failed, these sensors can send inaccurate temperature readings to system & will need to be replaced.
Below is a link to our video that talks more about this.
      th-cam.com/video/S0UisIciGu4/w-d-xo.html
As far as your hose connection, that’s odd. We have seen in the past that new hoses are very firm at the connection tips & may just need a little extra push...HOWEVER...if it is clearly not connecting, you may want to return hose for a new hose & verify they are selling you the correct hose.

If yes, that gasket will go in between the Water Outlet Valve base and the engine ultimately creating that water tight seal.

    Hi Michael
had my water outlet valve changed on my 2016 Cruze today, while watching your video I noticed a small amount of fluid leaked out when you separated it from the engine. I requested my old part to be returned to me and when I got home I noticed the inside of the old part was totally dry, to the point where I rubbed my thumb across it and it flaked off, I thought this to be strange which is why I "googled" and was very glad to have found your video, is there any possible explanation as to why the interior of my old valve would be so dry, my vehicle was in and out of the garage in under 2 1/2 hours so I know it didn't "air dry"

    • @DIYwithMichaelBorders
      @DIYwithMichaelBorders  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. Is your Cruze back up & running properly after repairing the valve?
Having 3 different flow ports, this is very prone to leaking, mainly because it’s a plastic part taking on an incredible amount of heat from the coolant.
Plastic parts can warp and fail far sooner than aluminum or metal parts. As far as the coolant drying, it shouldn’t dry that fast unless the shop went out of their way to wipe it clean & dry it with a rag...🤔... & since you wanted it back, it makes us believe that the shop technician may have gone out of his or her way to clean the part and dry it before handing it back to you so it didn’t get you or your vehicle dirty.

The part where the Water Outlet Valve Return Hose or the hose that goes from the water outlet to the reservoir, snaps into the water outlet at 11:57 on the video - what is that part called? It has a metal clip that holds it into the water outlet. I assume that this part can be replaced by itself without buying a whole new water outlet. Zoe Craig
Thanks for watching. Are you referring to the smaller return hose that feeds back to your reservoir? If yes, you can replace this hose without draining entire system. A few very important things to be aware of.
      1. Wait a minimum of 3 hours with engine off before working on coolant system. This will allow the system to reduce pressure and cool down.
      2. We recommend having some paper towel in place to catch any and all coolant that leaks out of your hose when removing.

    • @DIYwithMichaelBorders

Thanks for watching & is the clamp that secures the hose properly positioned & secured?
If the hose is old, it’s possible that it is warped and very stiff which leads to the clamp not being able to create a watertight seal.

Thanks for the question. The only gasket for the valve is the rubber gasket that seats in between the valve and the engine.
Verify that you have that lower hose all the way shifted into place on the valve. Also, if you inserted a brand new clamp, you need to ensure that you did not over tighten the clamp... this can cause rips in the hose as well as uneven tightening.
