    The KLR will go anywhere the rider has the balls and skill to go. I’ve ridden mine through all kinds of stuff that people say the KLR can’t handle

    You made the smart decision; most accidents and fatalities in the mountains are people who A) got in over their skill level B) had improper gear and C) didn’t know when to turn back.

    You kinda of said, it, KLR may not be the BEST, in a situation, but it can get you there and back. You showed that!. People like to bash it, but for a DUAL sport bike, that has gone around the world, pretty hard to beat for the $. PS - You are NOT stupid! Are there better bikes for that situation, absolutely. But how's your budget, and how big is your garage?? Let's get real People.

    Way more adventurous than I am on mine. I have no desire to ride single track especially on the KLR ADV. I rode single track years ago on a gen2 and broke my left leg on a tree and had to ride it to the ER. I'm too damn old to break bones these days. Ride safe!

    A good watch. I have been exactly where you have been in terms of taking a new KLR where it shouldn’t have gone. With decent tires and a 14 tooth front sprocket, things would have been a fair bit easier. Still you got there and back and that’s the most important bit. Well done.

    • @mymotorcyclelifestyle
      @mymotorcyclelifestyle  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did get there and back, and a little beat up in the process but I would not trade that experience for anything in the world, after it was all said and done I can look back and learn more than I ever could from watching a video...lol

    After watching all 3 of your videos, I have some suggestions. I have been riding a KLR650 on adventure rides for 15 years now. First, get some good gear. You need some good riding pants and ADV boots. Second, proper tires and inflation are paramount for adventure riding on a KLR. I suggest the Adventure line from Motoz, Specifically the Dual Venture front and Rallz rear. The stock KLR tires are terrible for any real adventure riding as you found out. Air them down to the mid 20's psi will maximize your off road traction. Just my $.02, hope this helps.

    • @mymotorcyclelifestyle
      @mymotorcyclelifestyle  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the advice. I have made a lot of changes since these videos so you will see that I have improved in other videos. by the way I run my tires at 21 PSI and you are right the stock tires suck for real, especially when the surface dirt get's a little wet and just get's slick like what was happening in this video, and I was not very confident riding since I was not used to single track and didn't like being on the side of a cliff...lol

    definetely a lot of determination in this video, but I cant help but think you caused a lot of your own problems here. I have a small bike, but I think if I walked it through every obstacle it would be much more difficult than riding it through. Of course, I'm not there in the moment, but it looks like you need to get comfortable putting your feet up on the pegs and just going. Best of luck to you on future rides!

    Good stuff. Some Advice from one KLR rider to another. ADV camel 1 finger clutch kit and a 14 tooth front sprocket will make things a lot more manageable off road and bike will still do 80-85 and throw those stock tires in the dumpster they are trash . Have fun man keep up the content.

      it was quite a challenge for sure, but to be honest it was nothing compared to what you will see me going thru in a couple weeks...lol I have a 4 part series coming out in a couple weeks of a ride my brother and I just did together getting all the videos edited and ready to go now so they will come out on time, you know with these kind of videos, I have to do the ride and get's lot's of videos, then It takes a bout a week or two for me to get them all edited together to be able to show everything and if I put it all into one video that videos would be hours long so I have to segment it into three or four parts.

    A great learning adventure! Those are the most memorable. Perhaps stick to fire roads for a bit. That trail would be better suited for a true dual sport and/or a more skilled rider on a KLR. (I wouldn't take a KLR on that trail & I don't claim to be a highly skilled trail rider) You did great though. Cheers!

    • @mymotorcyclelifestyle
      @mymotorcyclelifestyle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am becoming a more skilled rider as time goes on because the way you get better at something is to keep going and keep learning, I didn't expect the trail to be like this though or I would have waited till I have learned more.lol

  • @MrCheaterpipe
    @MrCheaterpipe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As your skill level increases your fatigue level will become less and less as you will not expel as much energy muscling the bike around and will be letting the machine do more and more of the work that being said you gotta have the right equipment for the task at hand tires suspension and good safety gear is all a must full on motocross boots for trail riding adv boots are more flexible and comfortable off the bike but don't offer the protection from bending or crushing that is all so common an injury in this sport a plb like a spot or garmin inreach worn on your person not your bike is another great idea especially if you plan to ride in either remote areas or by yourself ditch the side boxes and get a good tank bag and tail bag I know all this stuff sounds like a lot of money and yes it sort of is but our safety is paramount and everything I mentioned and more is more than paid for by the avoidance of just 1 emergency room trip be careful and have fun

    • @mymotorcyclelifestyle
      @mymotorcyclelifestyle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As you see more videos come out you will see I've gotten a good skid plate now, better pegs, and inreach and there is already a video out about my ADV boots and other safety gear ...lol. I still have to get better tires but you are right my safety is number 1 and I will get better tires as I can afford them

    @graymangw6016 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    So freaking lucky you caught that tree. You made it up and down, pretty cool, lots of good techniques you used. I recommend changing the handlebars out, this was as transformative as changing the foot pegs. You wouldn't think it but it really changed my control and comfort with steering the bike. I went with the protaper but I know others went with the tusk chub, just a little narrower and a better sweep back.

    • @mymotorcyclelifestyle
      @mymotorcyclelifestyle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What do bars add? Just curious as i need real hand guards.

    • @graymangw6016
      @graymangw6016 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am 5'10" and I feel like my arms and legs are a little short. So the shorter length handlebar with an increased height really put me in a more comfortable position. They are also a couple of inches shorter making the bike a little narrower. I used the tusk d flex and used a hammer to give them a little more bend to fit my setup perfectly. It was the cheapest option being $60 cheaper than bark buster.

    • @markjeepingful
      @markjeepingful 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Have you rise your foot pegs?

  • @onerider808
    @onerider808 ปีที่แล้ว

    7:39 Jeans? That’s...ballsy? I’d suggest at least some cheap G-form knee pads and maybe a second pair as shin pads. They are soft and flexible, but harden up on impact. Best yet is some Klim or Fox riding pants, with integrated armor. For your hip, I’s suggest some Troy Lee Design or Fox slide shorts; you can wear them comfortably under jeans, and they protect hip, thighs, and tailbone. Fairly cool even in summer.

    • @onerider808
      @onerider808 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good protective gear gives added confidence and lets a rider focus on the ride, rather than the consequences of a fall/crash

  • @onerider808
    @onerider808 ปีที่แล้ว

    34:57 Those dudes kicked you to the curb; they left you alone, inexperienced, unprepared, and unfamiliar with the route and you coulda been laying up there with a broken leg or etc, cussing them. One of the first rules in mountain adventures of any type is...if you come together, you stay together. If you go alone, you leave your route and ETR (est’d time of return) with someone trustworthy....and/or wear a Garmin or rescue beacon. If you must separate, set a time and place to rendezvous, so if you don’t arrive, they can ride back up the trail. No offense, just sayin...

    • @mymotorcyclelifestyle
      @mymotorcyclelifestyle  ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand all that and we didn't go together, they were on dirt bikes and there was no way I could have kept up with them they were long on the trail before I even showed up. When I met up with them at the top they couldn't believe I made it that far on this pig of a bike and no experience, they went back down and waited for me at the truck, so that was cool, I knew if something bad happened they would have come looking for me for sure by the way I now carry a Garmin rescue with me everywhere I go because I go out a lot alone.

    If your bike wants to go to the edge every time then your not steering it properly or your leaning on the bike. The bike will go where it's led to go. Slippery or not man. Idk how you ended up against that tree bud but man I feel sorry for you. Your gonna be soar tomorrow lol. Be safe man And know your limits. And as far as your other riders your with they should never left you in the dust. You need a better riding group if people are just leaving you behind in the boonies. Anything can happen. I'm looking to get the 2025 klr 650 when it comes out and they really aren't ment for single track. They can do it but yea heavy bike man. Great video tho and best of luck in your riding.

      this was only my second time on single track and I know that the bike will go where you look and I had forgotten that and kept looking at the edge, Hind sight is 20 20 they say and looking back at it I know where I was going wrong, but I have to say that I am glad that tree was there because it would have been impossible for me to get that bike up out of that ravine by myself...lol I did find some easier track to ride and did learn a lot more in the process.

      It was quite the adventure, I didn't think it was going to be that hard, because all the videos I watched about these trails show it to be nice and smooth and fast flowing, but they never showed this part of the trail that you have to get thru to get to that part..lol But I learned a lot doing this, one day I will be back to do it again, because now I know what to expect but I need more practice and I need to get in better shape.

    I’m going to give you a helpful hint. The reason your bike hero’s going to the edge of the trail is because you keep looking at the edge. Also keeping your feet off the pegs is creating more problems for you. It throws off your balance. Not trying to be a know it all but it’s a fact. Watch a motorman video on TH-cam same applies on the street or dirt.

    • @mymotorcyclelifestyle
      @mymotorcyclelifestyle  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree 100% I made a lot of mistakes because I haven't ridden in the dirt in a very long time, I most likely would have done a lot better on a dirt bike, because I used to ride, but like I said it's been a very long time. Been riding street for 38 years and can ride with the best of them and out ride a lot of them, but I really should have found some easier trails to start on to get back some of the memory or dirt riding before attempting this hard of a trail.

    • @mymotorcyclelifestyle
      @mymotorcyclelifestyle  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Actually if the engine is moving the oil is moving, why do you think they dry crank an engine after rebuilding it? They turn it over for a long time to get the oil pumping thru it and it's not running, they are just cranking it, therefore if the engine is rotating the oil is moving, the oil pump is manual, it runs by being pushed with a rod that comes off the cam, so if the cam is moving it's pushing the rod and oil is pumping.

      you know back when I was riding dirt bikes, I was a lot younger, never went to a track just rode in the dirt and didn't even know what a single track was, climbed hills and went full throttle across the plain, this was a wake up call for sure, and everyone keeps telling me it would be easier on a dirt bike, but having experience on one of those sure it may have been a little easier, but I didn't have the proper clutch control, that is something you need to practice and learn and something not a single person riding trails will tell you, they just say you have to send it, but that is how you get hurt, you have to have the right clutch control, and know when to send it and when not to. This was brutal for me and I won't be doing this sort of trail again, although I did find some easier trails to ride that were really fun.

    '22 KLR base model in LAVA ORANGE, bought it new last year. I've done trails but no single track...yet :) Good job getting outa that situation. Others have mentioned it; after market bars. I got a set of tusk (not the chub) and got rid of the bar end weights. Only gained two inches of clearance on each side but makes a difference. I also added risers (tusk 30mm). I'm average size (5'8") but they really helped with comfort and control while doing the next thing I'll recommend...STAND UP! Standing while off road greatly increases your control over the bike. I didn't believe it either until I did it. I spent 20 years riding black top on a big cruiser before the KLR Huge difference. Watch some videos from Bret Tkacs and MOTOTREK both here on TH-cam. Great tips. PS: I love those Double Take Mirrors, Dropped SEVERAL times and just push them back in place. Oh and real hand guards are a must.

    Been basically in the same boat as you in this video however it was a 500+ pound BMW R1200GS. I'm sure I may have taught people some new words that day. But I very quickly learned that this ADV bike doesn't do what my Honda XR600 does and I learned that my XR600 didn't do what my KX250 did. But somewhere in all the attempts and fails and successes you will find what style of riding you like and you will settle in on the right bike. Go with what you like to ride and what gets the job done. Singletrack in my younger days. Then came 50/50 dual sport stuff. Now it's ADV moto camping. I tend to ride nice wide forest roads here in Colorado now if I wanna go off road. And your right the bike is way more capable than the rider. But well done! Very well done. You didn't need help.. you did fine. You learned and are better prepared for the next ride. Get prepared for moving that klr without help (come along )

      well there would have been no where to hook a come along on this trail, at least not without going across the trail with it and if someone would have came flying down thru there they would have gotten hurt...lol but I am pretty strong and managed to get it back on the trail.

    Klr attacking single track!
    that certainly has my attention
    I could tell you right now those tires are not gonna get it done on soft to rain. That forest is stunning

      you are right, and I have since this video, changed the tires and found some easier single track to practice on ...lol

    It's not that the bike is bad for that, it's the god awful tires the bike comes with. They're really not much better than a street tire and have no business off-road. Regardless what their marketed as. I pick up my brand new 2023 KLR650 tomorrow around lunch. And the very first thing it's getting is tires. I'm not even going to bother trying to wear these down

      @mymotorcyclelifestyle  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I couldn't afford to change the tires at this stage, but have since gotten new tires. And I was not used to single track either, the bike is capable for sure I just needed more practice. Lol

      @@mymotorcyclelifestyle it's extremely unfortunate that Kawasaki didn't choose a better tire for the machine. There is so many people who think these bikes are not capable because they've only tried with the factory tires. I think you did shockingly well actually. I've got a lot of dirt experience, and I definitely know how terrible those tires are. You did a very good job of managing it. Especially with such a disadvantage like a slippery Tire.

      once the dirt started to get a little wet it was like riding on ice, this dirt here is crazy, it's powdery on top and solid like stone underneath, so when it get's a little wet it's easy to slip and slide and makes it hard to control the bike..lol

    Good thing you made it bud , but you can’t take these hard cases on those single track gnarly trails they are very flimsy and also they could hurt you in a fall

    • @mymotorcyclelifestyle
      @mymotorcyclelifestyle  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They really are not flimsy, I have crashed this bike more times than I can count now, I have had it for a year now, this is last years video, and I have to tell you these boxes are tough as nails.

    When I take mine out, I ditch the saddle bags. Makes things a bit easier to navigate. Only put them on when I'm out commuting and need storage.

      I will probably start doing the same things once I am done testing them to see what it takes to actually break one of them with normal riding like this...lol

    I enjoy watching you with the KLR, i got one just like yours and can relate to what your saying, It is a pig, top heavy
    and it sits to high, they do have a short version out now though. Keep up the reporting, your doing a great job. By the way . I have a bad hip too.

      Right on glad you like the video, you could just order a shorter seat that's all the did basically was take some of the padding out of the seat...lol

      Right on glad you liked the video. I have to keep trying or I'll never know what trails I can ride and which ones I shouldn't, but I am finding out there are no easy trails in my area...lol

      it started raining and it got very slick, if I was a better rider at this point I would have had no problems here, but this was only my second time on a single track in my 56 years of living.
