Great info. Funny, the guy you recommed for supplies is in New Jersey, I live there and would never have guessed ANY trappers existed in this, as I call it, Occupied Territory, of NJ.
Those #8/0 Rosco heavy barrel swivels are my “go to” for shark fishing and have made a huge difference in eliminating (yes, eliminating) twist offs in my snaring. Started with 7x7 wire but now use what’s left of that for drowners and extension wire. 1x19 is truly the way to go. Tight chains and cables MT. JJ
I just moved from Connecticut to get out of that democratic poop hole, was planning on Tennessee and ended up in Arkansas!! Can't wait to use the info that I've got from you down here!! Great videos, keep up the great work!!
I always look for Made in the USA on my trapping fishing & hunting gear. I'm glad to see I'm not the only person does that. Thank you and keep it up full of good information and tricks. 👍👍👍👍👍🇺🇸
Hello Mr Meattrapper. For starters i want to say i absolutely love your videos and have been pretty much binge watching your videos most of this weekend. Great information and i am learning alot. I totally appreciate that push quality buying quality products and building a quality and strong setup. The only thing I would change up is using copper instead of Aluminum Nicopress sleeves. I know copper sleeves are more expensive. But in my experience Copper sleeves can take more abuse and wont crack and fail as quickly as aluminum. I have found that aluminum is ok for static weight pull and copper can handle dynamic weight pull much better. I have also always used a "go/No-go" card to check my crimps. That way its known if the crimp is good and is not under or over crimped. Unfortunately over crimped sleeves will fail just as an under crimped sleeve. I also prefer using thimbles on my loops to protect the cable eye thats made, granted it adds bulk and expense to a setup. My snare experience is not even close to yours. however I have been dealing with aircraft cable and crimping it since 2001 for use in stage and screen and have used my cables for both flying scenery on and off stage as well as for use flying people high off the ground. Thank you for your hard work on these videos and please know i have a great deal of respect for you and my comment is meant as sharing my knowledge and not as disrespect to you. Thank you again!!!!
Hi Tim...I like the idea of a mid-snare swivel. That terminal swivel/clip looks good as well. Good luck on your trip. Looking forward to your next videos.
Indeed you are right on the money with the additional snare barrel swivel! I get a little more worried about my cable snare getting kinked up and bent so I add one or two additional barrel swivels to the cable end of the snare as well. Fully agree that the old style cable terminator swivels do nothing. I see how easy that swagger is to use...still mashing my ferrals with a hammer~!
Thank you sir. I find to get a lot of subscribers you need to do crazy stuff, act like a buffoon or jump on the latest bandwagon trends. Or maybe just have a good looking chick in a bikini. Most people don't want simple, tried and true reality and common sense. But thank you for the thought.
@@Meattrapper , I agree, I've seen some "educational" videos on how to build some things. The one that comes to mind is on a rocket stove. They put a lady in the video and thumbnail and boom, a bunch of views. Also see it with the people with the hot food challenges. Act like a fool=views
Ever thought about using split rings to hook your snare to the extension cable that way you can pop off the used snare and hook up a new one and just keep using your extension over and over . Shouldn’t be much wear on the extension I wouldn’t imagine at least for coyotes . By the way great job well explained Tim
Very thorough and helpful! I am just beginning to explore snaring and your advice is invaluable. In Minnesota we are required to use a breakaway device on all our snares. I purchased a few j-hooks with the proper weight limit but am unsure on how to incorporate that into my snares. Can you demonstrate or refer me to a site that can teach me the correct method using j-hook breakaway devices? Thank you in advance.
@@Meattrapper ok thank you. I just ordered some premade snares for the first time, because i really dont know what im doing yet. But thank you so much for the very helpful information.
Hi from Australia, great videos. I have learnt a lot from them. What would you recommend as the best book for a beginner to learn about snares and snare making. Thanks in advance
Thats a good question. Since videos became popular, books have really stopped being written. Two of the better snaring books are Master Raccoon Snaring by Newt Sterling and Modern Snaring by Dave Dezarn. Both are quite old, but solid information. You can also check out my playlist "Snare School" which has a lot of information.
The Meat Trapper. Thanks for your reply. Will check them out. Have just started watching your snare school videos. Love them, they are great and full of info. Thanks again, cheers John and Tina
Hey can you please show us how to snare a squirrel. I'm having problems with squirrels and I'm using fishing wire( stuff for catfish) and I always seem to get them in the dang snare but they always back out or when they fall off my balcony ( where the snare is) they somehow get off
Just getting started snaring. Ordered a few snares from Southern Snares. My intention is to trap rabbits to start. The snares I received have deer stops. Will the deer stop inhibit the success of snaring rabbits?
@@Meattrapper Thanks so much for getting back to me. Actually, as it turns out, my question is mute. Minnesota requires j-hooks or equivalent on all snares. So clipping off the deer lock will eliminate the redundancy. Thanks again. Your advice is highly valued.
Hello new to your channel. Im having troubles with racoons and coyotes killing our farm animals. I bought me some snare traps. Was wondering how to keep my circular shape. The snare keeps closing. The predators are going under the fence to get them. Any helpful tips will be grateful. I live in Northern Alabama.
Depends how you attach it. If you thread the cable through the swivel to create an anchor loop, yes it loses the swiveling. If you use an extension to anchor, or #11 wire, then the swivel is free to swivel
Thanks Michael, I am going out to make a few sets this afternoon and will definitely try this. I bought an abandoned farm place and it is crawling with yotes... Wish me luck
Rather than buy the tools, in the short term, I would buy them pre made from SouthernSnares.com. You can call them at 912-288-6542 and ask for Brian. Tell him MeatTrapper sent ya - and tell him what you want to snare and he will fix you up.
Great job Tim - the best tutorial
On a modern day custom snare and all the components coming from years of experience on the trap line 👍
Man I can't wait for someday I can live in a state that will allow me to use all the information you have given us on snaring

Is there an advantage to attaching your lock to the cable with a double Farrell on the end. seems like it would be more free flowing.
Good information. Thanks.
Another great video! Thanks Tim

Where do you get your supplies from and can he set me up with what you use I'm a newbie to snares

Any thoughts on copper vs aluminum stops and ferrules? Any benefit of using one over the other?
Copper for saltwater and hot jungle, aluminum for all else. I will be doing one more video in this series and it will be on that topic.

Are those barrel swivels certified made in USA? I've seen a fair share of US sellers selling Chinese stuffs claiming made in USA...

Try the "W" method in the video posted below. It sits at the 3:10 minute mark. I learned this technique from one of the best snare man in VA.

What’s the point of the rubber tube?
It allows you to insert the support wire to hold the snare up off the ground.
@@Meattrapper thanks I’ve seen the twist on springs but never a tube.
@@firstinlastout8324 I prefer the vinyl tube or even better rubber fuel line. Fuel line seems to stay flexible in extreme cold compared to vinyl.
Nice
