A guide to upgrading to CarPlay/Android Auto for Mazda 6. I show you how to take your dashboard and armrest apart, how to install the upgrade kit and where to place the wires.
Firmware update and general installation guide: www.mazda6club...

Outstsnding video clear and informative. Just ordered the kit and will give it a try. Managed to do the upgrade to the firmware a few months back wit the "1 pager" so fingers crossed can tackle this!
Where do you find true one pager?
Thanks for the great video. Made it very easy to install the Apple Car Play in my 2017 Mazda 6. Two points that would help other viewers.
1: I removed the glove box and that made it very easy to run the cables down to the wheel well area on the passengers side.
2: when removing the center console, there is a hidden screw under the rear cup holder. Just lift the rubber at the bottom of the cup holder to reveal the screw. The two you show in the video did not need to be removed.
Ahhhh that bloody screw. Thank you

how were u able to run the cables with the glove box removed? having trouble with this. do i need to remove the black plastic trim on the passenger side that is under the gearbox on the right?
@@yzdh1 I think I pushed a stiff wire through as a fishing line. All the trim in the center console was removed. I do believe I also pulled the trim on the side of the wheel well as well, but it has been a so I am not sure anymore. Generally, just keeping pull off panels until you have all the access you need.
This video cost me a fortune... I had to go and buy a Mazda 6 before this would work! 😄👍🏻
Take your like 😑 lol
That's me right now tonight!
Watched this video every day for two weeks in the build up to doing this myself… fitted in 35 minutes
Thanks Jake brilliant instructions
Thank you for the video. Followed it and it worked well! For those wondering the size of the dashboard bolt is 10mm
Excellent video - very helpful in my efforts to update my wife's 2016 Mazda 6 with Apple CarPlay. Very informative and invaluable in assisting with the disassembly of the dash and routing of the new cables. I could not have done this without your help. Took me about an hour start to finish - would have been much longer without this video!
hey I have a 2017 mazda 6. Does your wifes car have an issue with ghost touching? I know its common with Mazda3 and mine so I had to disable the touchscreen connector. Will the commander knob and steering wheel controls work perfectly fine with this kit without touchscreen? Or if anyone knows an affordable way to fix the ghost touching. (I did a screen test diagnosis and the touchscreen failed the test)
Hey, how did u find the update? I am struggling to find one
This video is extremely clear and informative. Thank you for taking the time to document, vlog and present the whole process. This makes life so much easier for the rest of us. Great upload 👏🏻.
I was hesitant to install CarPlay in my 16' Mazda6, but your video made it look way easier and I followed your guide. So happy to have it installed now, thank you!
Finally did this after seeing the video two years ago, mine is a 2019 model and it has a slightly different interior, but it gave me the confidence to give it a go and went smoothly.
Thanks a lot for this video! I purchased the part from the recommended eBay dealer and installed it today on my Mazda 6 following your instructions. It works a treat.
Great to hear!
Just did this tonight. Worked like a charm. Excellent directions, other than your car is backwards LOL. Took an hour start to finish, had to recheck parking break connection as that threw an error first time. Thanks for the video
On the proper side
I chose the after market kit for 90 usd at the time... I followed your instructions on how to install it, everything went fine, although I have a lefty car... basicly the same just mirrored. I didnt bother with the wire management either. It works great but thx to the extreme heat this summer the system stuttered a bit, it only happened when it was 40degrees outside temperature, other than that it works perfectly. I love this stuff, so much better with carplay than with the og infotainment!
Timing for this couldn’t be anymore perfect. Thanks man.
Genius idea to pop the wire through the start stop button and then the footwell. Saved some time gets concealed easily. My gosh that one screw took an absolute hour to remove!!!! Bent mine too and then bent it back 👏thanks for this video!
You're a legend. Thank god us english know how to talk properly. The only video I could follow was yours.
Cheers.
Thank you! Your video helped me install CarPlay! I rewatched it, I don't know how many times, and it helped so much. I'm so proud I could do it myself with your and Mazda6 Club's help with the updated firmware. 🙌
Thanks man, did what you said, everything but a small detail worked. In my case there is a screw in the copholder holding the whole centre console in place, had to remove that before taking out the console. Other than that, thank you! Everything works great, the job did not take more than 20 minutes.
Thank you for this walkthrough. Was able to complete this in about 45 min with no issues thanks to your clear instructions
Thanks for the video, just installed car play on my Mazda 6 tonight. This was a big help!
Hello There - I don't have a Mazda 6 but if I did I'm sure this video would come in handy
Exactly why did you watch this video lol?
Edit- this was very interesting I see now why
Thinking of buying one myself 😂
Thank you so much for taking time to document and post this process. Just did the upgrade myself and was dead easy thanks to your great video here.
Thanks, very helpful! First day with Carplay in the Atenza was great.
mate! great tutorial, used it on my Mazda 6 2016 in Australia, such an easy install following your instructions. Thnaks very much.
Thanks to you mine Mazda 6 2016 has a working carplay. Greeings from Slovakia.
Glad it helped you out!
"Don't try to save 50 quid on a crap cable" .... Best advice out there and goes with a lot of different parts and what not for a lot of different applications whether it be cables for a car or a PlayStation controller.. And if ur ever in doubt, just watch a few u-tube videos on it until u feel like u understand it correctly. When i was much younger i remember running wire and switches through my car as well as like 15-20 of my friends cars for lights and stereos and I learned so much just doing this stuff on my own. This was back in 00-02 before u-tube so I did it all on my own.. Good times
100% if I'm questioning whether to cheap out on something I'll spend an hour or two looking at reviewa
Great video! A bit more difficult that expected but managed to do it in the end 😅
Good job on the install. Nice and neat, nothing broken, wires hidden, and everything proper. 👍🏼😎
Thank you so much for this! Very helpful!
As an FYI to others, you can remove the glove compartment and then feed the wires through that way as well. Found that to work well.
That's a great idea!
This video was super informative, just installed car play today and it works like a charm🤙🏽
THANK YOU!! This guide was absolutely perfect and made my install so easy. You just saved me thousands of dollars ❤
Thanks for the motivation. I have successfully installed it on my 2017 Mazda 6. One thing that may help others - I had a screw beneath the cup holder that I should have unscrewed by removing the mat in the cup holder. I just pulled to break it :) no regrets though.
I had this done in my local Mazda dealership in Dublin for €200, everything included. It took about 4 hours from dropping off to collecting my car
Just installed android auto/carplay in my Mazda. This video was super helpful!!! Thank you!
You're welcome!
Very helpful, thanks you! Just installed in M6 2016
Beautiful video and amazing information. I am still thinking about purchasing a Mazda 6 wagon, I have 2 options 2014 GT wagon or 2017 tourer wagon but I am worried about the reliability of this car as I will be using it for long distance driving and long road trips with my family and I don't want to be stranded at the side of the road. Thank you again for this wonderful video
Great guide, however the site no longer hosts the 2 update files, has anyone got a link to the files?
9:55 I usually have a challenge of pulling out as well 😅
Also there is a screw in the cup holder under the rubber Lining you must remove it before prying the centre console off 👍🏼
Watched until the end even though I own a fiat Doblo and have no use for this video. You never know i might get a new car someday lol 😁
Dr. Jake, thanks very much 🙂 Just installed Ali Express CarPlay in my M6. 75 minutes work.
You think there’s any risk of damaging the car? Little worried lol
@@mikedecarlo9602 As for electronic damage … time will tell.
I bought the CarPlay unit at a store with 1000+ units sold and largely positive reviews from all parts of the world, so that provided some assurance.
As for damage during installation … no worries. The installation tutorial is pretty decent and the dashboard and panels are really well engineered, like Jake said in the video. Furthermore, I bought a plastic prying kit with the CarPlay unit from the same store on AE, which also includes the socket wrench. Simple and effective.
Just have confidence while pulling the panels, they don’t break. Most of the clips are easy to unlock by pressing the little lever or are engineered to let go at a certain pressure.
One thing to keep in mind though is to be careful with the metal clamp that holds the multimedia unit in place (the one you need to unscrew). I used a small towel to protect it from damaging any surfaces.
I would say, just try it.
@Rogier Thomasse just put it in tonight but now my car won’t start.. praying the reason is because I had the light on in the car for a little bit and the battery died. We’ll see tomorrow..
Another great video Jake. I do love a bit of CarPlay, I use it exclusively in my car, I’m sure you probably will now too 👏🏻
Great video! I would probably test the functionality prior to assembling everything. It'd suck if you had a defective unit and had to take everything apart again! Ask me how I know LOL
Great guide! Finally got around to fitting the upgrade today. One difference in my 2017 SE-L estate seems to be a self tapping screw at the bottom of the rearmost cupholder, under the rubber mat. Confused me for a while! Seems intended to reduce flex in the centre console so may be a running change.
oh had I read your comment before doing the upgrade on mine :D It would have saved me a few grey hair :)
I'm late to the party but couldn't you tie the new cables to the old ones and pull them from one end to the other
That would make it unnecessary to pull out the entire center console
Or do you have to take it apart anyways?
Is the radio a separate peace that connect to this unit?
Thanks for another nice video Jake
Thanks for watching!
If this is all still possible I think I'll do this process soon. Thanks for the video lad. The one downside to this car is lack of apple carplay
Hi, can I get a link for download installation update file? I can't find it in their forum..
I cant find the firmware file in the mazda6club. Can anyone tell me where I can get the file? cheers
Can I order from the suggested link if I live in the us?
Thanks for this, it was really helpful in an unrelated way. I got a new Mazda 3 last year and so far haven't played any music in it because I dont have music on my phone and I was using a 2nd gen iPod nano in my RX8. I didnt realise I could just plug a USB memory stick in until watching this and I've got a big drive this afternoon too. Should make it more enjoyable :)
Glad it helped!
Do I have a car? No. But I still watch Jake's videos :) and I will probably learn something.
Have been meaning to do this for a couple of years! Thank you. Well done taking the fascia out whilst holding the phone. Was it a worthy upgrade? All my work destinations are in Google Maps and I have my phone tenuously attached to the dash during navigation, so it sounds like a great improvement. Love the 6, except for the durability of the paint.
The official manual says we should use a battery charger, is there any point or would it be alright without?
Where did you get the new update looked everywhere and my sound does not work in apple car play. Please help.
Hmm... been reading these forums, where exactly do you get the firmware files from?
Thanks for the great video. Recently I installed in my 2017 Mazda 6 the Android Auto/Carplay. All went smoothly. Only one problem, quite frustrating though, the touchscreen isn't working with the Android phones. Works great with an iPhone. Don't even know where to start looking. I'm an Android user. Help if you know, thanks.
I have a 2016 model and tried the software update but the button sequence is not working. Any advice?
There is a wireless variation. Just installed it on my Mazda 6 2016.
Which one did you get bro? The one on Amazon?
Can you post a link to the product?
Brilliant video, might have to go buy a 6 now!
Removing the glovebox gives you a direct path down and out from the radio.
Hey mate im just finding this video now as I'm looking to do this exact upgrade. I can't find the link for the genuine parts required ?
In the description but he wouldn’t send to the uk for me, I just bought from a Mazda dealership for £200
I've noticed quite a few of these on ebay are made in china when the oem packages seem to say made in Japan. Are the Made in China one's knock-offs?
Thanks
Hello Jake, the plastic panel next to the brakes, where can i buy it from? Mine was missing from the start when i bought it from a dealership?
Where can I find a radio for USA? Need to replace mine
Brilliant video, thx👍
Outstanding video and tutorial. They should pay you to do tutorial vids for everything on TH-cam. One question, I have a 2015 Mazda 6, will this installation work?
did it work?
@@JRE_Clips_Daily I haven’t tried it yet.
Have you now done it? Very interested also.
Not yet I had to abort the mission. The whole radio unit is not great. Turns off randomly mid play.
Quick question: Do u know how ur subscribe and join buttons r below u name and ur subscriber count has switched to where those 2 bottons were and vice versa??
Is the android auto responsive? With the knob? Is it worth to upgrade?
Does this disable my backup camera?
Where did you get the software to put into car ?
Jake, thanks for this video. I am struggling to find the files to download. Did I see you need to send them because no longer available online for free? Please help!
Sorry to say that the files are no longer available for download
You can get the files from eBay. I paid 14 euros for version 7:40
does this work in mazda 3 2018 australia??
Hey, I love your channel do you recommend any screen upgrade for Mazda 6 2020
I'm building myself up to do the firmware update. I know if I mess it up, I'm looking at paying a fortune to fix it!
Still struggling to locate the firmware where to update my infotainment
Hi Jake
Can I ask where you got the files to download onto the USB, I've followed all the links you have posted etc and found nothing of how to find them!?
Thanks
I had the same problem. I was able to buy the file on eBay for 14 euros (version 7.40)
Thank You very much for this tutorial - You make amazing job - easy and simple :)
Incredible, thanks.
Hello could anyone help I can’t find the software for this install anywhere online , any help would be great
csn this work on a 2015 usa mazda 6?
When I got my new car, I connected my phone to the cars Bluetooth and couldn't figure out why CarPlay wasn't working. WHY DOES IT NEED TO BE PLUGGED IN?!?!
The phone is transmitting, or ''çasting'' the image that you see on your head unit, as well as the audio and the user interactions such as touches etc. The head unit is basically acting as a moderately dumb screen. All that data requires a lot of bandwidth that Bluetooth can't reliably handle. Well, 5 probably could, but that's not in any cars of which I'm aware.
Wireless carplay exists, but that uses Wifi instead, which has higher bandwidth.
Thanks doc worked a treat
Doc the Disclaimer 🤞
Just another 159 Brands to do now Doc... you've started now you must finish 👍
I use admit 5:33 had me wondering if I'd hit the wrong channel 🤔... Nice upload nonetheless Doc
Hi, can anyone help me find the firmware update for EU region please.
This is fantastically niche, Doc. I don't own a car, let alone a Mazda 6. Nor do I own or use any Apple products. Good video though, have you thought about doing one about installing the Android version on a Harley Davidson motorcycle? That's more relevant to me.
Anyone struggling to pull the head unit out far enough to disconnect the cables? The head unit is free and is 70%out, but no matter how hard a pulled. It wouldn’t come out any further. Also I have a 2019 Mazda atenza and I have no idea how to disconnect the cable going into the start stop engine button that keeps a panel on that keeps getting in the way. Have been working on this for 3 days. Thinking of returning the module and going into Mazda for them to install one
On my head unit the Usb option are shaded out
If anyone has a Mazda 6 2018 model, the centre console is screwed onto a bracket underneath. You'll see it when you lift off the rubber coaster of the back cup holder. I nearly broke off my centre console out of sheer frustration before finding the damn thing.
Did you find it easy to route the wire ? The 2018 layout is very different from the one before.
@@davidemmerson2616 routing the wire was OK. I was able to feed the wire down to the driver side footwell and from there to the centre console is pretty straight forward.
@@sylvesterperera7056 Is the screw under the rubber cup holder mat the only thing you need to loosen?
@@davidemmerson2616 yes, everything else is just plastic push on clips
@@sylvesterperera7056 how did you remove the panel underneath the first layer of trim (the one with vents and hazard lights switch)? as per my comment above, there are 5 screws, which I all undid, but the panel won't move for me :(
I'm glad I have a new car where all I have to do is plug in my phone using a USB cable!
I'll stick with my cd-player for now - old school! But well done mate.
can't find this update could anyone help ?
Just looked og my Toyota Verso could be upgraded. Sadly not possible.
How old is your Mazda 6?
2016. He mentioned it a couple of times!
@@willford8475 I will gladly admit that I saw Android Auto in the title, thought can my car her that? And then I never watched the video.
@@NitronNeutron lmao. At least ur honest
Great video! A couple clarifications I noticed with my 2017 Mazda6 GT:
1. the center console/cup holders were NOT removable - screwed in from the underside - but following the process and lifting it up a few inches was all I needed to thread them through to the USB hub.
2. there are two screws holding in a 2nd plastic cover panel by the foot well - remove these screws and thread the wiring above them. screwing them back in will allow the wires to stay put above the cover panel rather than fall into the footwell where they may become visible over time.
For an Oct 2023 install:

What is the socket size of the bolt holding the screen please, anyone? 🙏
It’s 10mm 😇
Looks like a complex update, I would not do that to my car, because I might just not be able to put it back together
If Jake can do it, you can do it 😂
Thanks for this video
does it require sd card for the navigation??
It uses whatever maps app you're using on your iPhone - almost all the ones on the app store are compatible if Apple Maps isn't what you want to use. No SD card needed.
I don't want to crap on this excellent and informative video but there is a free method of getting Android Auto installed working without a firmware upgrade and taking apart the dashboard for the USB hub upgrade. Google Mazda AIO Tweaks, it's a hack that allows you to install homebrew apps, including Android Auto among other tweaks and customisable options. It's safe and easy provided you read the instructions carefully. I should probably mention Apple Car Play isn't supported a d you still need to do the video method for that.
I wonder how the future iPhones will connect when they remove the lightning jack and go purely wireless
wireless carplay is a thing. Works really well in my car (but appreciate fully that this doesn't help those with cars that don't feature it).
I wonder if Apple or a third party will produce a wireless->wired adaptor, or if Apple won't go wireless at all, at least not in the next four or five years. The latter would seem prudent for this particular use case.
