I daily drive an RX-8 and can absolutely say it's an awesome drive every time! The modern Wankel engine is only a failure if you don't know how to maintain it or don't want to pout in the little extra time needed to make it reliable. 232+ horsepower in a perfectly-balanced, light, and tight handling sports car puts it in supercar fun-factor territory, and you can get a more-reliable Series II (2009-2011) for under $10K.

The Chrysler turbine was the most reliable car engine ever built. Only had one moving part and didn't wear out like the rotary. The engine could easily last 1 million miles or more. The Chrysler marketing department killed the engine because they believed most of Chrysler's sales came from repeat customers. But if the engine lasted 1 million miles nobody would ever buy another one. Their business model relied on planned obsolescence, not endless durability.

The long flame front in rotary engine leads to incomplete combustion...results in high HC and CO emissions. That's why Mazda uses 2 spark plugs firing in sequence. Supposedly rotaries work much better with hydrogen as a fuel as has a very quick ignition, even with the long flame front.

    • @beachbum4fun2

Converting electricity to hydrogen is low loss and dirt cheap conversion. Converting hydrogen to a hydrocarbon requires CO2 at bit of energy loss. Scotty love these on Mazda ❤️💪 I have owned 12 Mazda over the last 24 years - 5 MX5’s, with an RF and a CX5 turbo diesel currently in our garage. I live in Australia and our SkyActiv 2.2 Turbo diesel runs at a completely different tune compared to the version that was sold in the USA. Our version has 140kw and 450nm of torque and will deliver between 6-7.5 litres per 100km.
All of our Mazda’s have been brilliant, fun to drive, reliable and never caused us a single headache. Here in Australia the brand has been the number 2 car company with as much as 10% market share. I follow Mazda closely all over the world and I know how hard they are trying to crack the USA market. You guys are about to receive the Mazda3 and CX30 in turbo form ... sadly not for us 😥

Little known fact, Mazda would not be here today if it wasn't for Ford financially bailing them out of debt in early 80's. As part of the deal Ford had design rights to several Mazda models that's why The Probe looked like an Rx7 & The Explorer looked like a Mazda Navajo. The most sold copy cat was the Ranger that was almost identical to the Mazda B2300. Now they only had design rights, so none of the drivetrain was Mazda. Seen your Ford badge & thought you'd be interested in that.
