    we researched the bike and found out what it was and what was missing, and You helped to get it back to a working 3 Speed

    Bikeman4u I just want to say THANK YOU for the Schwinn Speedster series of videos. I recently was gifted with one of these3 speed beautiful bikes and with TH-cam video, I was able to adjust the gears and 3 speed trigger shifter on my own. I appreciate the time and effort that you and your crew put into these videos.😀

    Your video was very helpful and Thanks for posting it! I just picked up a 77 Speedster with a 3-speed Archer hub that needed to be adjusted & I did it thanks to You! I like the way you routed the gear cable through the bottom! Very clean looking! My Speedster cable runs through the top tube so I might consider moving it to the bottom.

    I put my 1973 S/A AW 3-speed shifter in 2nd gear and then adjust the chain so the pin shoulder top, just below the first chain pin, is even with the window on the axle. This leaves the chain a little less loose in third gear, actually not really loose, just no tension on it. She shifts beautifully and the cable never leaves the wheel.
    It's a 1973 Schwinn Breeze BTW, English rims and all. Been through the hub and, yes I'm a big fan of the Sturmey/Archer 3spd.

    Thank You!!! I love the series. Working on a Raleigh 20 and the info is perfect. Keep up the great work. The link for your website does not work from this TH-cam copy. No problem in that a search found it fast. It's only a matter of time before there will be the same interest in 60/70s bikes as there is for muscle cars. Love my old Raleigh. And thanks again for what used to be "secret information". How many bikes were trashed because the hub was between gears. keep up the great work.

  • @ndktube

    2nd time was a charm. 1st time two problems:
    The cable head popped out of the trigger slightly--this is pretty easy before it's pulled tight! It can (and did) get stuck out of position then when I shifted to 1st, ugh trouble.
    Second, I think I mashed the cable too tight at the hub end, causing the fray.
    Fortunately had extra set. When you get it right it seems straightforward, in retrospect.
    Old fenders and chain guard are tired looking. Wonder if they are worth the bother.
    Tx Bikeman.

  • @kennethflorek8532
    @kennethflorek8532 11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Here's a guess. This is before the stiffer style casing and cable for gearing came in, which Bikeman mentions in other videos about gear cable. The un-stiff cable is OK for pulling, but not retracting. Retracting is important for gear changes, and not so much for brakes. They used minimal casing so a light, easy hub spring would be enough to keep the cable always taut.

    Sturmey Archer started making 4 speed hubs in the late 1930s. Matt this is Alex B. btw
    I actually read that the quality is pretty good considering that the new sturmey archer hubs are made in Taiwan. I was going to put a 5 speed sturmey archer hub on a late 1940s 3 speed project bike but I sold that.

    Thanks Bikeman. I'm cleaning up an old Rudge Sports and going through this process. I don't see where you cut the cable housing. You must have done so because originally it is as long as the cable itself. The metal end of the housing goes into the trigger, right? And the other end is plastic and removable so can be put back after cutting the housing to length I guess.

    Just back from the garage. Yes the metal end of the housing goes into the trigger. The plastic removable end wasn't needed, the housing itself goes into the little guide on the clamp.
    The whole job failed though--possibly the hub itself is bad. The action on the indicator rod is quite rough and resulted in a frayed/ruined cable at the anchorage when pulled tight.
    Thanks for listening. :-)

    BikeMan, I have a Sears free spirit. If i sent it to you, how much would you charge to rebuild it? It's a 3 speed internal hub, just like that Schwinn. New cables, tires, inner tubes, rebuild the hub, new brakes, etc.

  • @garyquail2347

    I noticed that bicycle is equipped with a sturmey Archer TCW 3 speed with mechanical built-in coaster brake now why does that rear wheel have to incorporate what the caliper brakes on that back wheel that does not need to be on the rear of that bike? And also to that I did notice the wheel doesn't spin as freely now are the bearings a little too tight on the rear hub or what? Now on the left side of the wheel you can adjust the play just a little where it be like about a millimeter of play on the rear wheel so you do not bind up the bearings other than that it's a beautiful bicycle and I believe it's Top Value will be between 150 to $200.

    are there certain times you prefer to receive calls? I live in Canada, but have free long distance from a landline.
    I managed to get it loosened off so it goes into first gear, and rides well in second, but it still gives out in third, it will catch and engage for a while in third but then it will click suddenly into neutral and spin without moving the chain.

    • @boggy7665
      @boggy7665 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Daniel Geib If it's behaving well, no need to overhaul. First try flushing with solvent, may be gummed up if it's been sitting. They have a reputation for being solid for many tens of thousands of miles. If it has a hole for oil in the shell, then oil. Two drops every two weeks or so. I used 10w-30, not sure what the oem specified.

    Hi Bikeman,
    I have a Shwinn Racer with a Sturmey 3 speed. Today it fell over, wasn't a big deal but the gears started messing up on the way home. In 3rd gear it was disengaging and eventually staying completely in neutral, and as I was adjusting it back and forth, 2nd gear was in neutral at points too. Right now, the cable looks properly adjusted but it spins like a windmill in 3rd gear and won't even go into 1st. Which seem like signs of it being both too tight and too loose. What should I do?

    • @EvanRosa
      @EvanRosa 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shaunflynn7301 @bikemanforu appreciate your response, but i might not be describing the problem. it has nothing to do with shifting. in each gear, the bike chain moves before the gear moves. it feels like it's totally disengaged for about 2-3 inches of pedaling, before the chain actually moves the gear.

    I like this and it's sad that most of my hubs were given away to a bicycle dealer in my town of san diego CA.
    But now I'm wondering if there is anyone out in my town that has a few sturmey archer hubs left they all must be 36 hole types only.
    Anyone out there to help a guy out here.?
    I found out on my own that you get higher gears on the STURMEYS by having 12 or 14 teeth in the rear,and the speed pick up is makedly higher as you are traveling down the road.
