When they fled Palestine, there were already Ashkenazi settlers who came there under the Haavara Agreement. The Bakshi's effectively fled the burgeoning Jewish colony there. Why? A lot of the irreverent or even surreal cartoons Like Adventure Time that are getting made these days DEFINITELY owe a huge debt to Bakshi. Huge. He struggled through making these movies while surrounded by Disney pap that was the commercial goal for animators.
Coonskin is my personal favorite. The original Fritz the Cat was also dope asf if you're into Bakshi's satirical yet honest take on everyday morality. Coonskin explored American racism while using stereotypical African American portrayals to expose American racism. Fritz the Cat explored racism, hedonism, hypocrisy and a lot of other things but I'm writing too much as is lol
Heavy Traffic is a must-watch, and Coonskin is probably the best Ralph Bakshi movie. If you're a music lover, American Pop is a good choice. Stay away from Cool World. Also, despite the similarities in animation and presentation, Heavy Metal is not a Bakshi movie.
@1:02 "We hates'ta interrupt'ya-" "We're sahrry!" "Yeah! But uhh..." Despite the grim reality of the scene, I earnestly smiled at that delivery. In general, the *bad guy* capable of being "normal" and polite/decent until provoked is such an excellent base for good humor and depth (even if they're just one-dimensional pillocks haha). I've always appreciated Bakshi's work and wanted to like it, but just couldn't ever get past how weird and disjointed it generally is from moment to moment. The humor generally escapes me from feeling like an assembly of things that were funny in the moment of writing that fall flat - like a string of "you just had to be there" references that always make you feel a bit dumb for saying to anyone outside that moment. But _this_ exchange? It broke past the above personal issues of "comedy elitism" and genuinely humored me, and it's clearly worth rambling about to no-one in particular on the internet, haha. I want to say that I should give this film a rewatch since it's easily been a decade after the last viewing, but maybe it's the isolation from compounding internal groans and emotional eye rolling that allows this clip to shine for me. Maybe the essential Ralph Bakshi wasn't the films he's made, but the clips that come from them along the way
Don't just limit yourself to this. Maybe you finally got a key to enjoying his 70s and early 80s run, which is unique in American and hell, even world animation.

His professors helped him get permanent. ya know like green card and now he's like 95.
@@mightymax9948 Naturalization. Look it up.
Why is the icon behind those two guys the CBS logo?
They prayed for 5 hours, damn.
And the stormtroopers were getting impatient.
Yo I know this was way before rick and morty but this really gave me that vibe
A lot of the irreverent or even surreal cartoons Like Adventure Time that are getting made these days DEFINITELY owe a huge debt to Bakshi. Huge. He struggled through making these movies while surrounded by Disney pap that was the commercial goal for animators.
Extremely polite robbery
Recommendations for someone new to Bakshi? Only seen wizards, heavy metal, and last days of Coney Island. Any good mushroom movie recs appreciated!!
Like how the rest of the Wehrmacht is out there waiting for an hour.
That was the most insane thing I’ve seen ever. Welp, this is permanently going to become apart of my artistic style forever now.
*ah, probably isn't that he's got a twisted view those soldiers were written to serve a point.
Is that a combine soldiers?
Heh, well spotted. Maybe Valve was influenced by this film.
@@doteaters I think they were both equally influenced by soviet military police
Hl2's bois way more so
@@doteaters i also noticed that the soldier sounded like hecu soldier from opposing force
This is what I loved, "bang".
quote from an engineer or demolitionist who fought in ww1.
@1:02
"We hates'ta interrupt'ya-"
"We're sahrry!"
"Yeah! But uhh..."
Despite the grim reality of the scene, I earnestly smiled at that delivery.
Maybe the essential Ralph Bakshi wasn't the films he's made, but the clips that come from them along the way
I enjoyed your ramblings. Thanks for posting it!
Don't just limit yourself to this. Maybe you finally got a key to enjoying his 70s and early 80s run, which is unique in American and hell, even world animation.
This scene confused the crap out of me the first time I saw it. It makes far too much sense now.
I kind of figured once the two by four came out and dancing started, these elves were screwing with the troopers. LOL.
Perfect representation of evangelicals
The gasmask soldiers reminds me a bit of the Sligs from _Oddworld._
They are rather Sliggy... And the whole thing kind of plays out in a way where I could imagine Sligs in their place and the reason they waited so long was because they were being paid by the hour....
I loved this movie
What made you stop?
@@ghostman5620I changed my last name
They were just fucking with them in the hopes that they'd get tired and leave.
Could be, but they were being asked to take responsibility for the prisoners, so why not just do it and save them?
@@doteaters Because then they'd likely drop every single one on them. How many people do you think two guys could house and feed?
@@hextarvigar6905 True, but you know, agree to take them in, the army leaves, the prisoners return home or work for the church or whatever. The alternative, as shown, is the prisoners just get mowed down with machine gun fire.
What the hell is this and why is it in my recommendations?
Welcome to Bakshiland.
I agree...why did it recommend me this?
*WE CRY OUT TO YOU!*
**boom**
If this is how they worship then it's no wonder God up and left them. They probably drove him closer to insanity in ONE DAY of that worship that the whole of the Catholic Church across history.
Priceless, classic scene
CBS logo lmao
It never entered your brain CBS borrowed it from somewhere?
He might have just be joking.
How have I not seen this movie
Man Wizards was cool I wish it had more time put into it the movie feels like it was rushed out
2:26 Gaht DAMMMMM! That dwarf Priest dude gives a better and more talented vocalist performance than any dogshit Adam Levine would sing after 2014
Hi I'm an Indonesian here, I'm planning to watch this one. I've watched 3 films from Ralph Bakshi
You should definitely watch it.
go for it, it's a good movie. It has better scenes than this.
0:56 Is that large eye the CBS logo?
"Behold the most powerful magic!"
[Shoots gun]
I have absolutely no idea what this is but need to watch this!!
It's from a 1977 animated movie by Ralph Bakshi called Wizards. I don't think it's currently on any streaming service, but all the major VOD services have it for rent.
This movie's super jarring and awkward, but I like it's weirdness.
1970 was a weird time.
Love it still.
Remember smoeking a blunt to this the creative ness was good such a masterpiece especially while your baked not condoning drugs just putting it out there lol
