Can the o-ring withstand the heat?

Yes, those red ones are heat resistant and meant for this kind of application. Do not use regular o-rings from the hardware store, however.

The way the Teflon tape was applied is not doing anything. Your seal is created on the o-ring, far from the Teflon.
