    What do we think guys?! Is the more practical 1 Series right for BMW, or was the sports hatch the correct formula?
    I can't answer until I drive it, but I am a fan of the m140i... so this new one has work to do.

      I like the rear-width, diffuser, exhaust pipes, vents, spoiler. The interior has come on leaps, seats look great, ambient lighting looks up to date, fit and finish looks high quality.
      Not a fan of the virtual cockpit, audi does that style better.
      Absolutely hate the front end and side profile, looks like a mish mash of entry level hatchbacks, like so many have said it looks reminiscent of the 2 series active tourer the angle the bonnet drops from the windshield and the shortness of it.
      It really was the drivers choice so it’d better handle corners better than its rivals or else this will be a massive own goal by BMW.

      Interesting car. Spec is so close to the A35 you would think they are sisters or cousins. Even the transmissions are similar. I really think it's more to do with cost and they needed a proper hot hatch to compete with the rivals.

      Funnily enough the production manager of the new 1 series is the same guy who was in charge of the 2 series active tourer which is starting to flop with only 68k sales in europe down from 85-100k. I'm surprised they put him in charge of the 1 series which consistently achieves 135k each year.

    • @ViktorVallin
      @ViktorVallin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I used to own a m135 (bought it new 2013). I bought it mainly beacuse of two things, straight inline six and rear-wheel-drive. If this car was offered at that time ... not a chance (in hell). So stupid. (yes I understand that bmw thinks they would sell more of these for a better margain etc etc, but the have also shifted the target audience).

  • @SChapps
    @SChapps 5 ปีที่แล้ว +150

    Pretty sure people weren't bothered about the space in the M135i, and would rather keep RWD and the 6 cylinder.

    • @borisbolshoi7317
      @borisbolshoi7317 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yes its nonsensical because really if you want more space you would just buy a bigger car. This is purely a money making exercise. Because now it's no longer a bmw its a mini in a frock the same as the first audi tt was a vw golf in a frock

      BMW are not bothered what the previous m140/m135 owners think, they only make up 3% of the market, the other 97% want more space, cheaper running costs, they will sell tons more. It's the way it is, I prefer a 6cylinder but I'm not buying new cars so they don't care about me, I'm still driving my old 1999 540i V8 msport.

    BMW owners don't care about having a bit more interior space. The previous 1 series was fine but they had to ruin it. They killed it's sex appeal.

      @adodoes8770 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well yes, but you're talking more about bmw ethusiasts. Most people don't care if it's rwd of fwd, actually probably a lot of bmw owners don't even know what they have. Now I'm completely on your side but making the car bigger (on the inside) and more practical is what actually matters for the masses, especially since most of the 1 series cars sold probably don't make over 150hp the owners most definitely don't care much about handling or car's performance. I still think this car looks shit but the normal 1 series (like 118i) looks so much better and much closer to the original. 1 series isn't exactly ruined maybe it's even better for most people but m135i is ruined for sure

    Shared with the i3? But isn’t that RWD?
    This car is an insult to BMW’s heritage, and doesn’t anyone realise how much more cramped the drivers footwell is in a FWD car than a RWD? I’m very tall but used to fit so well in my old 1 series. Losing the real handbrake, losing the 50:50 weight distribution, losing the low driving position, losing the longitudinal engine, losing the RWD, all kill all chance of attracting actual car people to this abomination.
    BMW asked owners if they cared about the RWD, most said no. But that is mostly because they do not know to attribute the unique way a bmw feels to drive to it’s drivetrain & balance. My auntie had a few BMWs and she didn’t understand cars but always went back for another because of ‘the way a bmw feels’ THAT is caring about the RWD, people just don’t know what to attribute it to like us car people. Horrific, generic, misstep from BMW here.

      People prefer the M2 and M240i over the M140i. Thus the M140i will always be the third choice. Sad to say so, but i think it won't be much of a future classic because of that. I think people are over optimistic and believe that the M140i is going to be the next M Coupé in terms or desirability, but it's really just not special enough to be considered the next M Coupe in my opinion. Only time will tell, but i'm not that optimistic. If you wanna make cash with a future classic you should buy an M2 competition and put that in storage.

Especially in light of the onslaught they face from all the competition. The M135i is better in every aspect than it's predecessors. Safety, fuel consumption, comfort levels, NVH, weight, handling, size, emissions etc. Y'all are just dwelling in the past. The 3.0 engine & rear wheel drive is gone. Make peace with it.

    Seems to me that most people are missing the point; as stated in the video (usual amazing, high quality by the way, both in content and picture quality and editing), M-lights only accounted for 3% of the total 1-Series sales, so it's commercial sense for BMW to re-package the new model to answer all the criticisms of the outgoing model, i.e. interior space, overall packaging etc etc. The A35 (and lesser powered A-Class models) and Golf R have/will sell in droves, so I'm sure BMW will see the M135i X-drive become very popular too. As the old adage goes, if you can't beat 'em......
    For me, it's the loss of the superb, smooth 6 cylinder engine that should be mourned more than the rear wheel drive aspect. At least the new M135i is X-Drive and not front wheel drive, so whilst there'll be no more tail-wagging like the outgoing model, the new model will be sure-footed and if they really have cancelled out under-steer, then that could see it steal sales from its direct competitors. Let the road tests/on-road comparisons begin.......

    • @dungareesareforfools
      @dungareesareforfools 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fair point, but personally I don't see why they couldn't make it rear-biased or even RWD along with the transverse layout. Ford managed it with the outgoing Focus RS.
      The issue for me with the redesign is that they're aiming at the wrong market, for a company that claims to be purveyors of "the ultimate driving machine". That majority of customers who didn't even know that their 1-series was RWD should not be determining the priorities of a company that proudly claims to be for the enthusiastic driver! Let them buy Minis.

    Excellent review, I’ve just taken delivery of a 135i msport; and in terms of having the correct formula and fun to drive I think BMW has hit the nail on the head. I must be honest I’ve never driven BMW 140 msport, and I’m not going put one model above the other in terms of how good or bad the 140 is compared to the 135 msport, but one thing I would say is the 135i msport is a beautiful piece of engineering very dynamic driving, very much car of safety and good driving characteristics within this car. The handling is excellent, and even though I’ve had mk7 golf for the last 6 yrs this 135i msport has eclipsed that and in terms of technology gone few steps ahead, don’t get me wrong golf was excellent, but this Bmw is excellent, and I love this review because the all wheel drive system on this car is brilliant.

    I think the car looks really nice... Emission rules are changing and it's just the way cars are going in general so to be fair 4 pot engine pushing out 306bhp is good and the car is lighter.

    • @mikoajdziewit3748
      @mikoajdziewit3748 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      imi hussain what about fwd? I still hope its a joke.

    • @imihussain1781
      @imihussain1781 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikoajdziewit3748 in all honesty the M135i had to go all wheel drive(X drive) using the S3 as an example it was just too quick off the line same with the A45 AMG. These cars are used more for driving fast on the road then a track, where you can exploit the fun of a rear wheel car...I mean how many people drift or have the back end happily out on UK roads?? Which brings me onto your point about FWD which will be on the less powerful models. Do you buy a 118i to drift or wheel spin? Hardly any power to do so and it would have to be wet. The lower models people buy for other reasons rather than for speed so FWD allows more space inside which is one example of what people look out for when buying less powerful models(boot space/leg room etc) and as mentioned in the video they have been spending 5 years to solve the under steer issue with the ARB system. Don't know if you ever drove a Vauxhall VXR they had 240 bhp and FWD you could easily thrash it on the UK roads, very fast car indeed.

    • @winzfeld1
      @winzfeld1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      imi hussain sorry I disagree. You don’t have to hang the arse out on a rwd car to enjoy it on the road. The balance it creates, being pushed rather than pulled and you can do little squiggles, makes it much more enjoyable. 4wd is not enjoyable, you either need loads of power or to be driving at warp speed for it to feel fun. Trust me I had a 420 bhp s3 and it was just fast, not enjoyable. Plus 4wd gives a false sense of security imo.

    • @imihussain1781
      @imihussain1781 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@winzfeld1 unfortunately I disagree. For UK road driving 4wd makes sense hands down the power put down way better. Look at the New M5 as an example had to go 4 wheel drive(although you do have the option in that car to send power to the back). For track use rear wheel drive all the way. UK roads 4 wheel drive. Peace.

    Great review as always, it is great to bring something fresh although there is a plethora of car reviewers nowadays.
    Regarding the car, the front seems awkward but the rest is ok but the fact that it is FWD, no manual or 6 cylinders makes me sad. I dont like that cars are getting so similar and effective with less fun aspect.

    This is the first BMW where I like the normal bumpers more than the M sport package.
    The model itself is in German language "gewöhnungsbedurftig". I haven't seen it in real life yet.
    As with a lot of BMW models in the past its never love at first sight. I started to love them over time. Especially with the Chris Bangle signature models in the early 2000's.
    And to be totally honest, not one BMW looks good on paper.

      If you're going to compromise the drive layout and pay more, you'd be better off buying a Ford - they know how to make cars that are good to drive, even with FWD. Besides, they probably wouldn't force you to have an auto gearbox / electronic handbrake.

    So if the haldex transfers max 50% of the power to the rear wheels does this mean the car won't move at all when the front wheels are lifted up in the air? There's definitely pretty much 0 Nm of force going to the front wheels in that case and 50% of 0Nm is 0Nm to the rear wheels as well.
