"if you're just doing stuff to get a good grade and you're not actually learning anything, why are you paying fat stacks?... If you're prioritizing actual learning and education over the grade, then the grades will actually come with that." This quote from the end of the video actually helped me a lot. I have been just doing homework and assignments to pass and get good grades but I am not actually absorbing or learning anything (hence why I crammed before an exam and forgot everything right after). This opened my eyes and gave me a new perspective.

Starting your homework early is a very good habit. Your life will be so much less stressful if you don't procrastinate. What helps me is using a planner app on my phone. Making a list of things to do each day and following a routine helps a lot to make yourself do things you don't want to do.

Advice from an incoming college junior who ties my worth to my grades: as tempting as it may SOUND, don’t overload too much on credits. I was never able to give my full attention and energy to any one class during the semester, resulting in cutting corners and not really learning and getting my money’s worth. It’s nice in theory to get ahead but in reality 19-20 credit semesters can just drain you of excitement and learning, because you’re too busy trying to finish assignments to get a good grade. Ofc everyone handles workload differently, but even if you’re the overachieving type, just remember it’s ok to drop if it’s too much and it’s ok to make some time for your wellbeing.

Also summer courses are not the end of the world. I've taken 5 summer courses over two summers and if you pick them right you can work them into vacations or parties or whatever you have going on. Most summer courses are between 6 & 8 weeks so you have plenty of non school days before and after them. I take them to lighten my load during the fall and spring semesters and I'm so glad that I did because I have enough credits to graduate in December if I wanted to and my fall semester will only be four classes. On the flip side I have a friend whose only taken two summer courses in two summers and has six courses this fall of really tough classes.

8:48 THIS. TIP. Last year I had a calc class with a horrible professor and I was doing horribly in it even though I was putting so much time into studying that I was getting lower grades in my Data Structures/Algorithms and Spanish classes (both of which were fairly easy for me). I went to an advisor (not mine because she was on maternity leave) who told me to just continue with the class and if I fail, I could retake it. Being a naive freshman I went along with that horrible advice and failed the class, ended up on academic probation (a devastating blow after having been an honors student for all of high school), and the next semester I found out from my actual advisor that when calculating my technical GPA for applying to the CompSci major, both attempts at calculus would be factored in. Finding this out gave me weekly panic attacks for the next month and, even though it did lead me to the conclusion that CS wasn’t the major for me (I’m applying for IT later this year since there’s less math and more business, which is good because I did pretty well in DECA in high school) I would not recommend staying in a class that you have no hope of passing to ANYONE.

I love this channel and this advice is awesome for incoming freshmen! I will be honest though, I just graduated from college and I did NOT get all As (by any means... like I had to retake a few classes), AND it’s “spicy flu” season (aka the job market is HORRIBLE atm), and I was still able to get my dream job. The advice at the end about prioritizing learning over getting the grade is so so so important! My college advice? Study and learn because you are studying something that you will potentially be doing for the rest of your life and you need to actually know how to do it well. BUT also have fun in college. Don’t take living with all of your best friends for granted (because you never know when a pandemic will strike and you’ll have to leave 3 months before you’re supposed to graduate and because your school made the decision to send everyone home SO last minute you didn’t get to say goodbye to everyone and you live out of state from your school and don’t know when you’ll ever see them again 🙃). It’s such a fun 4 years and honestly killing yourself to get an A in a class that has nothing to do with your major that will never be applicable to your real life is not worth it.

Gosh, I have been out of college for 10 years now, but this brings back awful memories as life as an electrical engineering major... side note: GO PENN STATE! I lived in EE East & West, Willard, and Hammond buildings for the second half of my stay and watched all of the people with so much free time having fun on College Ave. Prepare for the novel because I have a lot of opinions on this!
The idea for making a complete schedule for all major tests and project dates for all classes is a great idea that I wish I did. Especially once I got into my junior year and senior year where I had the bulk of my core courses and electives related to my major, I spent a lot of time on homework and studying and it was really easy to lose track of time as the weeks are flying by. There are classes where I had homework assignments due to hand in on a regular basis as well, and that would have been helpful to put on the schedule, as those assignments generally took considerable time to complete, and should have been factored into my schedule.
One tip I could give is that for each homework assignment or project, on the day it is assigned, take a look at it to see how long it is, how difficult it looks, etc and factor that in based on when it is due along with other due dates in your schedule so you can figure out when you are going to complete it. I've had assignments that were 4-5 questions that either had a million parts, or were just really involved to solve and actually took a while to figure out! Looks can be deceiving. Another tip is DON'T think that you need to complete an assignment or project in one sitting! Use the downtime between classes to work on assignments. There are times where I can complete easier assignments in a single break I have, and then I am glad that I didn't put it off and now my time after classes are done for the day is free instead of doing homework assignments I could have completed during breaks in my day. But using these breaks is also great for assignments you know are going to take time (because you followed my earlier tip!) and you can make sure you are adequately keeping on pace to get tougher assignments done on time. You can also keep pace if the assignment has stuff not yet taught, but you can complete problems of the material as it was freshly taught. This also gives more time to schedule help from a professor or friend in the class if you need help on certain problems as you go through them. (pro tip: don't go to a classmate last minute to get help on an assignment that you can't do, and then get upset that they don't want to work around YOUR scheduled to help! some of us plan our time to complete shit so we have time to go to the gym, sleep, attend a meeting, or just do whatever the hell we want, so don't hate because you have a very specific time frame you want help that someone else doesn't want to have to work around. you want someone's help, be willing to work with their terms since they are the ones that planned to have the time they had to help you and are choosing to give that up for you. rant over.) No lie, I literally have had friends ask me to meet them at times that I planned on doing something else, and when I gave them when I was free and willing to help, sometimes they would say they couldn't do it because of some stupid thing they planned to do (aka, not related to going to class or another assignment). HELLO, this is why you are always trying to crank this out last minute! You don't plan and are not prioritizing school activities over fun activities.
And on that note, holy shit are you right about focusing on LEARNING the material. Yes we all want good grades and to have as great of a GPA possible, but that should not come at the expense of real learning. I would have friends in my classes that would spent extra hours studying on how to do some insane problems that a teacher might put on a test, and the extra 4,5,6+ hours is not worth the extra how many points you might get for completing it verse the bulk partial you might get because you were able to get pretty far. Most of the time, the problems have nothing to do with understanding the material anyway, you are just memorizing something, and you focused more time on that memorization of a few super insane problems than understanding the material of what you are being tested. The main goal of any class is to make sure you leave with good understanding of the material, and usually good grades will come with that if you have a professor that focuses testing and teaching on that as well. Do professors need to make sure they have a few challenging things to delineate students? Sure. But if you are wasting time trying to memorize super insane unrealistic problems your professor seems to like putting on tests, then you aren't spending time understanding material, and like you said, you just wasted your money. Especially if it causes you to not have time for other classes.
And that is why it is so important to do your research on professors. So glad you mentioned that. You don't want to have to drop a class or repeat a class because you wasted more time trying to navigate someone's insane teaching and testing practices. I had a professor whose tests looked NOTHING like homework and NOTHING like material we go through in class. And liked to have all of these pointlessly hard questions, especially after just stating that his tests were nothing like the homework or lecrured. After the first test, I should have noped out of there when I discovered this. I ended up late dropping it, and I am SO GLAD I DID, but I regret not dropping it earlier and saving myself the unnecessary torture. I took the same course next semester, the amount of time and effort was much more realistic, as were the tests, and I got a B+. I seriously was going to get a D the semester before. What does that tell you?
Some professors might give you the benefit of the doubt if you regularly see them during office hours, especially once you get out of "large lecture hall" classes and into your courses with much less students and they get to know you. There was a class I struggled with just based on the fact I needed more time to work through problems since a lot of the material didn't come naturally to me. I understood the material, but come test time, I would have issues getting through everything and my test grades would be a little lower than what I would be happy with (not fail, but we are talking C+ range consistently). I aced homework and projects and did understand the coursework. The professor knew I understood because I participated in class, and came to him regularly about getting extra time to understand material that I didn't grasp in class, and would see me be able to complete the assignments. He knew the places I bombed on tests were due to needing more time to work through those types of problems (we are talking about a C++ programming class - the free write coding questions were where I would struggle more). After applying the grading rubric, I probably should have gotten a B for the class, but I got an A, and I am pretty sure that is because he knew I knew the material and that was the most important part, and clearly knew I put the effort into it. Not all professors are like this, but you won't ever know if you don't get to know them outside of class and get a feel for their teaching and grading style and philosophy. I think any other student with the same grades as me would have ended up with the B, because that professor couldn't know that the student did have a better grasp of the material than the scoring showed.
TL:DR - Clearly this is something that yanks my chain even a decade later, but folks - research your teachers, look at your assignments early, plan out your time, and go visit your professors especially once you get into your smaller class courses. and remember, LEARNING AND UNDERSTANDING are more important than spending 6 hours studying or staying up super late to memorize something pointless for an extra 10 points. Make sure you are learning with each class and assignment. I've seen people with an A in the class or on a specific test that were clueless about the material or the course and the person who got the B can explain things from memory. I saved weeks of time and sanity over the course of a semester focusing on wanting to learn and understand the coursework than trying being perfect over trivial things that didn't ultimately make me smarter. Many times my philosophy resulted in As and B+s, but assuming the professor was pretty decent and clear on material expectations, I always managed to get at least a B, and that was even in electrical engineering. I think I only ended up with 2 C+s, and those were in cases where late dropping wasn't a viable option (for various reasons) and the professor would have been the same next semester anyways so as long as I wasn't failing, it would't gain anything to repeat it.

Yes, just just do your best y'all!! I'm a senior in college this fall and I have a 4.0 GPA but ultimately, you're at college to eventually find a job. And at most, you'll put relevant coursework or a super impressive GPA on your resume, but really, most employers won't care. So don't sacrifice your health or miss out on networking events or work experience just for a grade. Yes, grades are important, but if you're honestly trying your best then you should be fine.
Also, yeah. Use Rate My Professors fr. Cannot emphasize this enough.
