I just bought a 2018 ecoboost as my first new car 0 miles on it. Did I want a v8 coyote? Of course, have I had 4.6s 5.0s (pushrod) uh yeah. I've had tons of fast cars. There's just something so unique about this car that just makes me love it. I wouldn't even compare it to the 5.0 because you'll always get crap for it, it definitely slaps the v6 around for smiles per gallon. This thing has so much potential it's not even funny. I would recommend this over the v6 all day. Of course the v8 is the big daddy in most average financial situations but for my first car Ford said no way we don't trust you with 40k try 20k first then trade in. Honestly idk if I want to trade in. Ecoboost has won my heart.

All engines that have DI tick somewhat and that's 99% of what people hear and complain about, when your spraying fuel at over 2000psi they are going to tick as the injectors operate.

All this talk/videos about the ecoboost premium made me want to test drive one which I did today and I have to say I was very impressed with the acceleration and all around materials. They have done a fantastic job inside. The car just took off like a bullet, and got onto the freeway at a terrific speed. When I looked at the speedometer, I had already hit 70 in a matter of seconds! Having owned V-8's and still do, I am truly amazed!
I know what you mean about it falling off when it has done it's thing but regardless it still puts a smile on one's face! :-)

Ford used the toggle switches back in the Ford GT. Also AmericanMuscle does a lot of work on blown Mustangs so it's not all that uncommon to hear a BOV from one of the cars there. Nice review, and from what I understand most if not all, turbo cars are grossly detuned from their respective manufacturers for emissions and, more importantly, longevity concerns.

Those are some huge torque gains! It reminds me of the svo and merkur in that respect. By just turning up boost in the merkur 2.3 without any engine work you can get some huge gains. I have been excited for the new 4 banger since its been announced. Purple who get the v8 just because they don't think anything else can be fast are in for a huge surprise when the full potential of the 2.3 is realized.

the new coyote has forged internals from the boss...good for 950 + whp i saw it the other day. if the ecoboost can match that it will be amazing. i like both but i like boosted v8s better

    • @connorjones6153
      @connorjones6153 10 ปีที่แล้ว

Well sure, but more people can afford to mess around with turbo 4's than boosted v8's. THe nice thing about the 4 banger is weight distribution, the v8's when modded at all are pretty much guaranteed to be faster, and thats okay, top speed is not a reason to get the 4.

Let me just say I am an owner of the new eco-boost w/premium package same color as this tester. My love for mustangs goes back to 1969 when my dad bought his brand new 69 mach 1 in Anchorage AK of all places. Loved that car! His next was a 71 Boss blk/blk what a beast! It was given to me when I was in the 10th grade in Hinesville GA. Only had it in my grasp for one week and some evil man came and took her away! Dad received 3 times what he had paid for it. He felt bad and helped me with my next car when I went into the 11th grade a 69 SS 396 Nova, had a great time in that car too, but my love was for Mustangs. I sold it and bought another 69 fastback w/302 but swapped in a slightly punched 351 W (my dad thought it was a 302 :) ). That car was pretty fast but I planned on more. Bought a new 83 GT for my wife when she graduated high school, fun car. Bought a 71 Ram Air 351 in California and had Bill Hyatt in San Fernando build a husky revision of the original smoker. I still wanted that BIG torque so I bought a 429 out of a GA state police interceptor 71 LTD. Sadly I never got the chance to build it. Broke my back and had to liquidate my beloved pony to get through a difficult year. As my two children grew into awesome young adults I got them both 2002 GT a stick for my son and an auto for my daughter, both silver w/black interiors I really enjoyed those and I loved the sound. Well now I have started all over again and have two beautiful baby girls 3 & 4 so the idea of dad having that pony in the garage again seemed very distant as I was rollin in the mini van again. BUT, my lovely bride had compassion for me and felt I deserved what I had always love from my youth and that was a beautiful Mustang in our garage. Get this! So on HER birthday she takes me to the Ford dealer and they hand me the keys to a very lovely 2015 Mustang. I said OH my goodness thank you baby but it's a 4 banger!? It was raining so I couldn't really get a good feel of the performance but it seemed not to shaby. I loved the independent rear suspension! My wife's plan for my future and longing for horsepower was interesting. She said, " hun, after your warranty runs out I'm sure there will be options available for you to get some HP out of this for less than 10K", which would be the cost for going up to a premium GT. I thought about that, the times and the changes that everything experiences, and after looking at the MPG that came with it I settled into the saddle for a long love affair with a very sexy pony! It may never replace the Black Stallion I knew in my youth, but this little pony will grow up into a proud son!

      Aaron P I considered a toyota 86 before I bought my ecoboost.
Reason why I had it in mind is bc its just a damn good looking car, but then I got home and thought about.
30k is too much for a car that cant really perform, especially in auto trans.
The new mustangs are just as damn good looking and give you much more performance and potential for the same money or less.
Some ppl like to defend the brz/86 by saying how its nimble and its great with turns, reality is that the mustang is light enough for most daily drive situations. I dont live around curvy mountains lol to benefits from it.
      Love my mustang

Great vid. I have owned two 88 Thunderbird turbo coupes and a 1985.5 Mustang SVO. All were ahead of their time and fun to drive however they also suffered from the higher RPM drop off due to the smaller quick spooling turbo. You know people will upgrade the tune, add a larger turbo, a little nitrous and these 4 bangers will will pretty quick. Of course a 2015 2.3 liter turbocharged engine will have more potential and be more refined vs the 1980's version.

The only complaint I can possibly come up with for the 4 cylinder is the sound, especially after hearing the v8. Other than that, what's not to like? Decent mileage, great power especially after tune and cheaper than the v8. This will never replace the GT, but it's a great and fun OPTION. It's like most of you are getting mad at a well known burger joint for having chicken strips on the menu. Great review!

Not to many people would go around admitting that they like certain cars but you aren't simple minded like them. If a cars is done right and you like it then you like it. On the other hand, I'm planning on buying a 2014 GT Premium over the 2015 due to the fact that I feel the 2015 lost its muscle look and went more sporty. What's your opinion because you've had a 2013 for a while. Btw I'm driving a 1995 Mitsubishi 3000gt at the time if you want to review it, its not that great but it's N/A and pushes 250 WHP but its fun. Thanks again and keep bringing on the amazing videos.

This is just me being picky, but I feel like Ford could have made the car shift quicker. It's like it takes a whole second for it to change gears. I'm not expecting GTR dual-clutch shifting, but it still could have been a bit quicker than what it is now.

Stick and clutch pedal for fun and then when that bitch traffic comes or you're just not in the mood, throw it auto and a computer does the rest. Except they're completely different transmission so it would probably never happen, at least not for a long time.

I'm calling B.S. on the Ecoboost (the 2.3L specifically) making the V6 worthless, and the reasoning is very simple.
The base V6 vs the 2.3L Ecoboost
    - the weight is nearly identical
    - the hp and torque is pretty close (yeah, Ecoboost has a bit more torque)
    - the mpg is actually barely different (1-2mpg)
The small Ecoboost simply doesn't have a lot of displacement. This means to match a 5.0L in output takes a LOT of effort. You're running a rather large turbo for the engine size and you're likely running E85 just to get the torque output in the same ballpark. This means you need a rather strung out 2.3L Ecoboost to make 5.0L power.
Now let's look at the piddly V6. Yeah, stock to stock, the Ecoboost wins. However, let's look at potential. With just a simple bolt on kit, the base V6 will out torque and out hp a stock 5.0L. This is no internal upgrades, just a straight bolt on kit.
    Now,
2.3L Ecoboost strung out on corn = V6 with simple bolt on kit.
What next? Upgrade the internals of the V6, drop compression, and up boost? We're looking at the same level of displacement as a GTR, and what can GTRs do? Frankly you can get to similar marks once you crack the engine open and start doing some real work.
The V6 has the potential for a big power build because it has displacement to work with. The 2.3L Ecoboost is crippled from the start simply by its displacement. Look at the most badass Focus Ecoboost out there and add 15%. That's all the 2.3L Ecoboost will ever do for you. The V6 makes high power with a simple bolt on and has potential once you start to throw money at it. Plus, you're still getting about 30mpg doing this. Owners who have done the bolt on kit route with the V6 have mentioned retained mpg just shy of 30mpg.
Once you start to look at it, what's not to like about the V6? ...I mean other than Ford specifically not selling it with any of the goodies from the factory to differentiate and push Ecoboost sales.

The ecoboost already makes 380 lfbt to the wheels with a tune only. Full bolt ons, the thing would be faster than a stock 5.0. If you're talking about serious internal mods or a turbo, why wouldn't you just get the 5.0 to start out with. Throw in a set of pistons and rods with a turbo kit and you get 900hp all day. It's a money game, thats why the 2.3 beats the v6.

I completely agree, I would completely get rid of the v6 because the 4 cylinder Turbo is so good. The ultimate mustang is still the V8 though. I would never in my life get a 4 or 6 cylinder mustang though. If you want a 4 cylinder get a focus St. He should also get that windshield banner off. That is not American muscle , that is American tuner. If you want a banner that says American muscle, pony up the extra cash and buy a V8.

    • @Dangerwiggles

Only issue is the v4 already has turbo, etc, and runs about the same as a v6. You can mod a v6 far more than the v4. Depends on what you want, but it is ridiculous to say there is no need for the v6.

I've seen videos of people making these engines over 400HP with a few parts. Bigger turbo is indeed needed. XD. When the power comes on is the same basically.
    Old Duratec turbo: 263 hp (196 kW)@5,500 rpms and 280 lb·ft (380 N·m)@3,000 rpms
    The new one: 310 hp (231 kW; 314 PS) @ 5500 rpm, 320 lb·ft (434 N·m) @ 3000 rpm

Nice video. Im still not sold on the I4 over the v6 argument though. When I went to order my '15 they were pushing the EcoBoost hard, but I don't think it so dramatically outperforms the v6, especially for the money. After taxes, tags, etc my v6 cost me 27,950 with some options. An equally optioned EcoBoost was $34-35,000.00 after taxes for a difference of 15HP and 40TQ. If i'm going to have a mustang thats not a GT id rather take the v6 and tune on it over the 4 banger. I can make 15HP and 40TQ on the 3.7 for way less than $7,000.00
I pick up my 15 on friday, so excited to pick it up. I already have a mod list together lol.

For the Ignorant..As David talked way back before the 2015's hit the salefloor. Ford was working on bringing back the *MUSTANG SVO* What is the SVO? The Mustang SVO was a limited-production version of the Ford Mustang sold from 1984 to 1986, during which time it was the *fastest*, *most expensive version* of the *Mustang* available. Although it departed both physically and mechanically from any prior version of the Mustang, it held the same spot within the lineup, both in terms of performance over "lesser" variants and in prestige, as had variants such as the Shelby tuned and "BOSS" Mustangs of the 1960s and 1970s. The *EcoBoost!* is a throwback to that Nostalgic car. Which makes it a Valid mustang.

Had a TT with a 1.8 225hp. Turbo with that was Rubber Band like. Sounds like the Turbo is small like he says to spool quicker but it could also be that it needs a waste gate that holds boost on the top and it should pull all the way to redline. The TT was exactly the same mid power hard and once it hit around 5k it was done like it just rolled over. Tweeked waste gate and it held 20#'s and pull hard to about 6000 it redline. Today with all the tech they will get the Turbo to haul.

I have driven my Ecoboost Mustang for a little over a year (25,000 mi) and can't complain about the power on the stock tune, sure it falls on it face if you try and rev it past 5k or so but that's a side effect of the small turbo. The engine has tons of torque down low where normal people tend to drive so the car feels far faster than what it really is. With that being said, I just ordered an X4 tuner to see if I can squeeze a bit more for the little engine that could.
My only real complaint about the car is the sound, the noise would be fine coming from an Focus but not so much coming from the Stang.
