This is one of those stories in the bible wherein the barbarism is unapologetic, even among its modern defenders. Kill everyone with a penis, babies and all? Of course, they say, what else were they supposed to do? Rape all the virgins? Well now, they say, those virgins were treated okay by ancient standards. Fuck you. This is supposed to be GOD's command - and GOD is not supposed to be subject to our standards, no matter the era. Sorry, but these modern day defenders of barbarism get to me. I'd like to tell you about one example of Christian morality applied in action. In the religious conflict called the 30 years war (1618-1648), the Catholics besieged the reformed city of Magdeburg (Germany) for several weeks in the name of the pope -> counter reformation and all. It was a large city at the time with about 30.000 people and when the Catholics finally sacked the city on the 20th of may 1631, they killed about 25.000 people (with raping and looting of course). The responsible catholic general count of Tilly wrote about it "I believe that over twenty thousand souls were lost. It is certain that no more terrible work and divine punishment has been seen since the Destruction of Jerusalem. All of our soldiers became rich. God with us.". Pope Urban VIII expressed his satisfaction that "the nest of heretics" was destroyed.
So they killed about 83% of the population in less than 4 days with only 17th century weapons.
Compare that to the 39% of the population of Hiroshima dying during the entire year of 1945 which includes being nuked of course.
After the 30 years war, Europeans were tired of violence in the name of Christianity and the enlightenment began which focused less on religion and more on understanding nature through logic, reason and evidence.
But thanks Jordan Peterson for teaching that Christianity is the foundation of our morality!

'Test the spirits to see if they hold true'. But what IS truth when getting into a moral issue as difficult as this? And is it really appropriate to constrain all the ideas and possibilities of proposed divine guidance to one old book that struggles to define which generation would see the end of history, and confused it's own adherents during their own lifetime vs Rome?

Woefully, it seems as though this is only something humanity has only codified within the past century, if not far more recently. There have only been a few decades where the law has considered that it was possible for a man to rape his wife. And so, we had perfectly common euphemisms such as "wifely duties".

    • @AnthonyBruns
      @AnthonyBruns ปีที่แล้ว

      Fun facts:
      - The Law of Moses forbade rape.
      - The Midianites practiced child sacrifice, cult prostitution, and beasteality regularly.

"It was different times then". That's my favorite defense I hear. As if watching your family being murdered in front of you and then being raped that night by the same man who slaughtered your parents, brothers and sisters, is somehow made more acceptable by the fact that it was "different times". But to the person watching their parents being slaughtered, and then being enslaved (I'm sorry, "married") and raped by their murderer, it isn't "different times". It's the here and now to them. It's the present moment. If the Israelites did in fact commit these atrocities and then justified it with God's rubber stamp, then they were among the most depraved barbarians in the world at that time.....
I'm sorry, I mean they truly were "the Chosen People".

@They say it was a command from god. I don’t believe that but that is what churches use to justify it. I’m saying that it was wrong and that if there is a just god, they would never command such a thing. Or they would at least not tell them they can kidnap all the virgins. I’m not expecting the ancient people to act better but I would expect the “objective source of all morality” to behave morally in any time period. That means that either the men lied and said god told them, were crazy and thought god told them, or god is a monster. Although, if the men had to lie to make this okay, that means part of them realized what they were doing was wrong.

I think main reason anyone does the Christian LARP is they want to be part of a community of non-degenerates and have families and keep their lineages going. For some reason when people abandon religion they also fail to reproduce. It's why I'd LARP as a Christian, since it seems every single woman that has rejected religion also becomes an anti-natalist, even though I think Christianity is retarded mental gymnastics and there is no personal god.

    • @lynningram4218
      @lynningram4218 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

My family is not religious, they believed in a higher power but were not a religion:
in elementary school a friend from my class invited me to their church. Instinctively I was hesitant and said no thank you. The person then said “well if you are not Christian and attend church you will go to hell” I didn’t really think about these things then. I never thought about heaven or hell apart from my beta fish ‘going to a better place’ I got anxious about going to hell- I started wearing like 6 crosses and wanted to go try church.
My parents took me and while it was pretty it never felt right- like I was going through the motions.
I was an odd kid- I had a notebook I drew monsters and dragons in and I remember the church personnel telling me I was Involved in dark things and was going to hell.
I was then very confused. I wore the crosses, I was at churches, yet im still disobeying god.
I started looking into the Bible and realized it was.. trash. I didn’t know what it meant to not agree with the bible and further searching led me here and to other TH-camrs where I learned more and became confident in being an atheist. I was young then, so I had many instances up to now where people took issue with this, but I have not wavered in my views.

This story and others like it were from the history of the Israelites, not those of the Christians. It is difficult for Christians to accept what happened in these cases, but because of a belief in the God of the old testament they have to find ways to make it palpable. Here is an article on how this has been done, in case people are curious.

Imkluu - interesting link. I've read similar rationalizations / justifications before. Sad how many people can't see outright genocide for precisely what it is, and feel bound to selectively condone it, simply because it is conducted at the orders of their God. I like how some of them try to argue that it never happened. Who knows, maybe it didn't, but the likes of Dennis Prager and William Lane Craig seem quite fine with it happening, and will perform all manner of intellectual contortionism to preserve the purported divinity of their 'good book'

We may think we have an idea of what a "god" does or doesn't do but without actual evidence to this we just don't know. Just because you are convinced of something doesn't make it true. We don't even have evidence that a "God" exist in the first place, just words written in a book by humans that claimed inspiration from the God they wrote about. Bring evidence instead of a narrative without proof.

I recently lost my faith in God and began to question His existence after 11 years of trying to serve in the ministry. I was as devout as one could get in Christianity. Discovered DarkMatter's channel a few months ago and it's really helped me make sense of a lot of things. THANK YOU Darkmatter!
When a person is raised from childhood to believe in a religion 'or else' and is ever lucky enough to start questioning God's intentions and then his existence, it leads to what feels like insanity. Most go back to their religion out of fear but if you push through it you'll realize that you don't have to have "all the answers" in order to have peace. If one can accept the fact that "they don't know" about certain things without invoking God, then progress can finally be made. For example, a year ago I was involved in a Motorcycle Ministry that turned out to be a Gang. Today, I just got accepted into a college where I'll be studying Mechanical Engineering and then go pursue a career at SpaceX several years down the road once I graduate. If I stay on this path, 6-10 years from now I'll be working on real life space ships that will be used to colonize Mars.

Hang in there. God is not done with you yet...
The worth and dignity of a soul is measured by what it delights in!
The Gospel is the good news that sinners can delight in a Holy God. It's the good news that all of our deepest desires are satisfied in the ONE who sent His Son to bring us to Him.
God is so valuable and so satisfying that the most loving thing he could do for us is to make Himself gloriously indispensable.
Therefore, God's commitment to be glorified and our goal to be satisfied are not at odds but come to simultaneous consumation in the worship of His Son... who took upon Himself the Wrath that God had towards us in our sinful disregard of Him. A wrath that could never be appeased through man-made religion.
Jesus didn't die to turn the world into a paradise, he died so that we could stop seeking paradise in the world...
Temporal things such as beauty, popularity, money, sex, racial identity, gender reassignment... can never truly satisfy. BECAUSE WE WERE MADE FOR SO MUCH MORE!
We were made to gaze intently into the Eternal Beauty of a majestic King, Father, and God... meet Jesus the Christ.
Life is hard, God is good, Glory is coming
      God Bless!

@Raven Knight, Good news for you! The BFR(Big Falcon Rocket) that SpaceX plans to build it already being built at Berth 240 at the Port of Los Angelos. Early next year, the BFR will be conducting sub orbital test flights. Three years from now(if all goes well) two automated cargo variants of those space ships will be going to mars. 5-6 years from today, two more BFRs will be leaving for Mars carrying people and Elon said it should take 80 days to get there. So by the time I get the education and experience in Mechanical Engineering to qualifiy for the job I want there, they'll already be colonists on Mars. Elon Musk understands all too well what you're talking about and his entire motivation is to create a self sustaining civilization on Mars so that if/when another extinction level event occurs either through mother nature, war or in the eyes of the religious, an angry God, lol humanity will have a plan B. Who knows, if we end up bombing ourselves into the dark ages those living on Mars might be able to help whoever surives WWIII get through those dark ages a little quicker.

Sadly, we’re not there yet. There are still a lot of people who believe very stupid things (earth is flat, GMO is bad, vaccines cause autism and ect.) without evidence and scientists consensus. But I think we are slowly moving to the right direction. There are more atheists and pragmatic, skeptical people now than ever in known history.

There is no point in debating against things in the world such as religion, politics and why and how humans exist with other people who don't share the same beliefs. So, you don't believe God do you? That's pretty obvious, heuh heuh. So according to scientists universe happened by chance and this world just formed by chance meaning that there was no reason at all behind it and it was just pointless. Evolution also happened by chance and we just formed perhaps from fish and we slowly evolved to where we were. There was no reason at all behind it. This means to that human existence is nothing but a completely random, pointless and meaningless event in the universe. Now, you know what this means kids? Well think about how massive the universe is and how small we are. This means that we are nothing but little pathetic creatures who aren't any different than animals. There is no such thing as rationality or morality. Well, to begin with if there is no God then our morals aren't coming from an outside source and they are just illusions created by us to add some sort of meaning. They are also indoctrinated into us by the law and our parents meaning that they are kind of fear based. Burning a forest is no more different than reading a book or becoming a doctor is no different than being a singer or even a manic serial killer. There is also nothing wrong with going to prison. Rationality also doesn't exist. You are all trying to look cool and trying to look smart in your every day life in front of others. Only one problem. Being cool and smart doesn't exist. The universe doesn't fucking care and we are all fucking animals! If there is no meaning to life thenThere will be no afterlife and some day where there is no consequences for our actions. We will not remember we existed one day. In fact, one day nobody will remember that the universe existed. Any emotions we feel are pointless and won't matter one day? So why don't we all just go crazy? You all have to keep pretending that life makes sense. You continue going through struggles, trying to get good jobs, being all gloomy and serious and you hold onto values which are just illusions of the mind such as friendships and relationships. At the end, or even now, it doesn't matter who you dated, what you did while you were alive or how long you lived for. So we may just all go crazy. Just run out and do whatever you want! Burn the local police station and laugh about it, dress as a clown and run around killing people. But stop being all serious about life! Trying to make some sort of fucking sense out of it. You all still cringe at things, continue getting angry voer bills n'shit and asking why people do 'retarded' things. Nihilism and complete madness is the way!

Religion says God is always good and moral, yet his actions are anything BUT moral!!Those who should teach religion are left confused when even kids can observe the contradictions in it!!
    It goes something like this:
Students:Why God allows evil if he is all good?
Teacher:Because god gave his creations free will.
Students:But when evil peoples take the free will of others, why God doesn't stop them?
Teacher:... *God knows better, stop using your brain!*
    Here is another example:
Students:Revenge is a bad thing or a good thing?
Teacher:Revenge is a bad thing.Bad peoples should be treated with good.
    Students:Why?
Teacher:Because if someone gets used with good they will eventually become good as well.
Students:Then why God punishes bad peoples with Hell?
    Teacher: *Next question!*
    (true story)

Christianity was made by the satanic Roman Empire by stealing ancient knowledge from ancient civilizations. Believe it or not, I do and I believe that the reason Christianity is so popular is because THEY want it to be. Do you really think that the people who knew the supernatural secrets would just speak them out? No! Of course not.
Wise people throughout europe and africa were literally forced out of their land and got instinct. Such example are the wise druids from celt. They had ancient powers and have even claimed to pursue miracles and speak to nature. They were also kicked out of their own land.

Speaking as an atheist, please try to keep in mind that only a subset of fundamentalist Christians take the story of Noah's flood literally. To be sure, they are often very loud, and as you say, VERY tiring. But it is rather clearly a story borrowed from older religions than Judaism. Others take it, at most, as a record of what some people, long ago, once believed. And for that reason, it's good to keep that history. But it does not mean that it needs to be believed as truth.
Anyway, yeah, DarkMatter2525 covered Noah and the flood many years ago, and did a pretty good job of it. Not hard to find via search.

I have such strong feelings regrading organized religion. I just want people to wake up and see how harmful it really is. Even other atheists are a bit shocked when they talk to me. But they've never really been there, most atheists I know grew up atheist in atheist families, they don't understand the true impact religion has on people.
But I was born in a "strong" Pentecostal family, I've seen the cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias so many times. I have been at the mercy of angry parents and teachers when I asked questions (in spite of being told to ask questions) about things that didn't make sense to me as a child.
When I was as young as 5, I have seen people "speak in tongues", and being "slain in the spirit" and running around in church during alter call like chicken with their head cut off (which makes a child feel really insecure, seeing adults act crazy). I was shamed for being a female and having a "womanly" body. I was told not prepare for a future because I would be killed for god because the tribulation would happen before I turned 18. And so much more.
I am so grateful for these videos because you get it. You really understand how harmful religion is, thank you for making them. It's so therapeutic for me.

I'm sorry you went through that insanity. I'm an ex-christian woman as well and when I look back at the views they made me believe about my womanhood and my body and the guilt I felt, I feel so happy I'm not caught in the dogma anymore. I've never felt more alive or secure in my own skin than I have without Christianity. It sickens me how I was expected to believe masturbation is wrong and women aren't "allowed" to have any positions over men in the church because men are the "head of the household". I don't ever want to feel pathetic like that again. If men want to exalt themselves and use religious dogma to extract control over each other, that's fine but leave the rest of us out of it. Women will not be your servants and our children will not be heirs to your moral perversion.

You should read "Conversations with God" by Neale Donald Walsch. Here's an extract from Book 2.
Religion it is not good for you. Understand that in order for organized religion to succeed, it has to make people believe they need it. In order for people to put faith in something else, they must first lose faith in themselves. So the first task of organized religion is to make you lose faith in yourself. The second task is to make you see that it has the answers you do not. And the third and most important task is to make you accept its answers without question.
If you question, you start to think! If you think, you start to go back to that Source Within. Religion can’t have you do that, because you’re liable to come up with an answer different from what it has contrived. So religion must make you doubt your Self; must make you doubt your own ability to think straight.
The problem for religion is that very often this backfires- for if you cannot accept without doubt your own thoughts, how can you not doubt the new ideas about God which religion has given you?
Pretty soon, you even doubt My existence-which, ironically, you never doubted before. When you were living by your intuitive knowing, you may not have had Me all figured out, but you definitely knew I was there!
It is religion which has created agnostics.
Any clear thinker who looks at what religion has done must assume religion has no God! For it is religion which has filled the hearts of men with fear of God, where once man loved That Which Is in all its splendor.
It is religion which has ordered men to bow down before God, where once man rose up in joyful outreach.
It is religion which has burdened man with worries about God’s wrath, where once man sought God to lighten his burden!
It is religion which told man to be ashamed of his body and its most natural functions, where once man celebrated those functions as the greatest gifts of life!
It is religion which taught you that you must have an intermediary in order to reach God, where once you thought yourself to be reaching God by the simple living of your life in goodness and in truth.
And it is religion which commanded humans to adore God, where once humans adored God because it was impossible not to!
Everywhere religion has gone it has created disunity- which is the opposite of God.
Religion has separated man from God, man from man, man from woman-some religions actually telling man that he is above woman, even as it claims God is above man- thus setting the stage for the greatest travesties ever foisted upon half the human race.
I tell you this: God is not above man, and man is not above woman-that is not the “natural order of things”-but it is the way everyone who had power (namely, men) portrays it.

You wouldn't accept the spaghetti monster as your "god". If so, then give me one reason why I should accept your one instead. And try not to make that reason rely on an ancient book written by tribesmen. That wouldn't help your argument.

No matter what happens to me, ever, I will not believe. Last year was the hardest period of my life. If something was going to make me believe, it would've been that year and its events. But it didn't. And I'm happy that it didn't, because it just proves to me that my mind isn't that fragile; I am not brainwashed.
And this, this only, is the reason people like you refuse to see evidence as a valid source of identifying correct hypothesis. No, let me correct myself; you refuse to accept evidence as a valid source of identifying correct hypothesis in the field of religion. More specifically, in the field of your own religion. Because when it comes to dismantling beliefs of other religions, you're going to use evidence, any evidence that you might be able to find. But, unfortunately, when it comes to your own beliefs, they are immune thereto. Immune to criticism, immune to doubt. Because "god" said so. Because "our holy book" said so.
"It's hard to win an argument with a smart person, but it's damn near impossible to win an argument with a stupid person". I'm not sure if you recognize this quote. I think it applies nicely to this current scenario, and every scenario similar to this, wherein a believer argues with a non-believer. Yet, there is something about it that I would change, for this case specifically. I would change the word "stupid" to "brainwashed". Because most believers in general are not stupid. Yet, when indulging in this argument, they act in the same way that a stupid person would. Because they firmly believe in something, but the smart ones can notice themselves the lack of evidence to support it. Yet they are so stuck on that specific set of beliefs, that they choose to ignore their usual method, the _scientific_ method, and instead opt for blind belief. Of course, were they to use the scientific method, they would easily infer that the argument for "god" has no basis.
This isn't exactly me replying to you. I'm not writing this comment for you, +jane Patton. I'm writing it for other people, who might be confused, and that might be reading this. I want to tell people where I've been led to after lots of thought, which may help them understand what they want to believe themselves. I doubt you'll have anything to say that'll be worthy of me replying, so I will most likely not do so again. Your previous reply, after all, was exactly what I had asked for it not to be.

And actually, at the time, I was heavily anticipating what the apologist books I had bought at a conference would say to refute these.
But.. they either failed to mention relevant issues, brought up pseudoscience BS, or they didn't adequately defend the Bible's obvious flaws.
Better yet, newer books I bought conceeded older arguments and instead the authors withdrew to playing the "god is beyond human logic" game. So I read the Bible again. And... Well, let's just say that reading this book is the fastest way to commit aspostasy

I think they would end up debating the nature of "truth" like Jordan Peterson did with Sam Harris. One thing I do like about Peterson is how he argues that for their time, these stories conferred an evolutionary advantage to the groups that followed their doctrine over the groups that did not and this is why religion persisted. I think this video is a good argument that it is time we used our brains to take the next step in evolution and dispense with the bible, it is outdated.

I used to read those passages in the bible like Chapter 9 in the book of Ezekiel and be horrified, there's multitudes of them where children, babies and adults are all ordered killed by "God". I had preachers tell me, that whatever God does is justified and even heard nutty theories like the Nephilim for the justification of genocide. I also thought of the Egyptian Babies killed in the book of Exodus at God's command when the pastor in your video was outraged by the slaughter of babies.

Why would an infinitely powerful and good god create us so that we can simply worship him for all of eternity, or suffer for all of eternity if we fail to do what he commands us to do? "The punishment for sin is death." Disrespecting your Father is ultimately punished by death? How is this just, or even GOOD in any way? That's Authoritarian crap. If there is a finite amount of evil in the world but an infinitely good being with infinite power, the evil CANNOT exist because the infinite contrary overcomes that which is finite. Can somebody try to explain this to me? I'm going through a crisis regarding my faith, and I'm coming to realize that many of the answers to questions regarding my religious beliefs are excuses for "I don't know," or are flat out wrong. I feel like I'm going against everything I've been told when I accept that some of my questions CANNOT and WILL NOT be answered until I die, if that.
    I'm confused.

    • @TheSamles
      @TheSamles 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'll try to answer some at least to the best of my knowledge and understandings, please take with a grain of salt. God created man essentially to be his friend, hence the free will and in his image things. Death can be seen as a limiter to how much sin we can commit. The longer we live the more sin we commit. God is separate from his creation so his creation has its own qualities. What is freedom without choices? What are choices without consequences, without right or wrong? you could say the material world is the domain of darkness. One way i look at it when it doesn't make sense why all this would go on for so long is that if time is a creation of God then what is time even to him? Also, important not to look at the Bible as a scientific book or tool when it was never meant to be that. The study of faith and/or philosophy is separate from the scientific study of the material world. A lot of these sort of "Christian Science" ideas such as a young Earth, the Earth only being thousands of years old, really just shouldn't even exist. They are pulling scientific ideas out of a nonscientific object.
I dont think i know enough about the event or topic of the video to address that at the moment.
Research the orthodox church. A lot of the negative ideas people may have of Christianity may come from protestant teachings. Some may still be unchanged.

All forms of statism require violence and coercion to maintain. A mixed economy is not pure capitalism, it is corporatism, and so requires a state. Free association, voluntarily entered without coercion, without impediment is the only path that can be ethically justified within a consistent framework, and will naturally approach capitalistic tendencies.

I feel like this video is so important for people to see. For those of you raised atheist, it must be mind boggling to think that so many people so fervently believe the stories of the Bible when there is so little evidence. And looking back, yeah, some of the stories are absolutely crazy, but, at the same time, I feel like part of me always knew that. Part of me, especially as I matured and learned to question new things, has always truly known better, that so much of the Bible is simply not logical, but another part of me wanted so desperately to believe it was true, to believe that this was the story of a loving God who was really out there and gave my life and those around me comfort and meaning, and thus that part of me worked desperately to make excuses to fool the other half, working, begging that I could still believe this good story to be true. But the story depicted in this video brings it all crashing down. The God of the Bible is not the all good, all loving being we’re told he is. That God is cruel, that God deliberately ordered some of the most despicable actions I have ever heard of, and that God is someone I should not want to spend an eternity with. Forcing myself to realize that also forces all those excuses and barriers to come crashing down. Why fool myself into believing in this terrible story? Why allow myself to continue the cycle of humans who have made life miserable for others in an effort to appease this being? Why allow myself to continue believing a lie when that lie has brought so much hurt to so many people?
Due to my extremely religious upbringing, I still feel uncomfortable calling myself an atheist. Maybe I’m still terrified that this terrible God might one day decide to enact his vengeance upon me. x) But at the same time, I feel extremely uncomfortable calling myself a Christian either. Maybe I’m an agnostic, or maybe I’m a Deist, someone who believes in some sort of God out there, but not someone who believes that this God can ever fully be known just by reading a likely fabricated old book, certainly not one as barbaric as the Bible. Regardless, in huge thanks to this video and the others on this channel presenting these damning issues in an incredibly professional and thought-provoking manner, I find myself no longer bound to my own lies, and no longer bound to this cruel, merciless God who wants me to inflict suffering on others. I’m free to chart my own course through life on my own accord, and I hope to make it worth it.

    • @spatrk6634

small percentage of people are raised atheists.
most of people you see here are deconverted christians, recalling what they believed in without scrutiny because they were raised with that belief.
so now they can enyoj the bible as fictional illogical comedy that it is.
      i know what you mean.
you dont want to label yourself atheist because you still fear that voice in back of your head that you think is god testing you
thats just truth wanting to get free.
its not god testing you by inserting logical questioning in your mind.
i came to peace with my atheism after i realised that if god is real and all loving and all knowable, he wouldnt punish me because i questioned his existence and in the didnt believe he exist.
he would understand my reasoning which is sincere that there is no evidence for god existing.
but after many years of atheism. im sure in one thing for certain.
that none of religions in human history are inspired by god.
if god is real. its not god from any manmade religion from human history.
i conisder myself being atheist towards personal gods.
      like jesus and allah.
but as you said, there might be something out there which we may label as god.
but its not some bearded humanoid who looks upon humans and takes notes on who is eating shellfish and having gay sex. so that he can punish them specificaly
so if i must label myself. i would say im pantheist at most
people usualy just imagine it either their personal religion they believe in is real, or no god exists whatsoever. they dont conisder every other practiced and not practiced religion out there.
